GST 14 Tuesday June 4 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Awards for bowlers BURNSIDE BOWLER Tayla Bruce was named top young player and best sportswoman at the Bowls Canterbury awards held at the Hornby Working Mens Club. Bruce, 24, was a member of Burnside’s winning interclub sevens team and was runner up in the centre pairs and triples. She was also a quarter finalist at the Bowls NZ National Singles Championships and was selected as a member of the Bowls NZ national high performance Squad. Bruce was part of the New Zealand women’s triple and fours teams that made it to the quarter-finals at the Commonwealth Games last year. Young Halswell Bowling Club’s Logan Dunn won the most improved player of the year award. Dunn, 15, played in a wide range of interclub and centre events at a high level, including winning two centre events this year. In January he won the Bowls Canterbury men’s first and second year centre title. He was also runner up in the Halswell fours team which included his father Jason. Meanwhile, Halswell’s Darrell Hawker was awarded the coach of the year title. He guided the Canterbury men’s intercentre team to the national title in March. Logan Dunn took out the most improved player of the year award. named volunteer of the year. Arjan is always behind the scenes working hard to ensure the smooth operating of Burnside’s large club. His volunteer work includes website maintenance, online results, social media updates and photography. Award winners: Team of the year – Canterbury men’s intercentre team. Administrator of the year – Sharon Wilson (Fendalton). Official of the year – Rosemary Murray (Canterbury 2017). Greenkeeper of the year – Stu Dalley (Christchurch and Halswell). Coach of the year – Darryl Hawker. Volunteer of the year – Arjan van Hasselt (Burnside). Club of the year – New Brighton Bowling Club. Consistent female player of the year – Fiona Frew and Chris Kibblewhite (Elmwood Park). Consistent male player of the year – Rod Greaney (Elmwood Park) Young player of the year – Tayla Bruce (Burnside) Most improved player of the year – Logan Dunn (Halswell). Sportsman of the year – Andrew Kelly (Canterbury 2017). Sportswoman of the year – Tayla Bruce (Burnside). ST THOMAS of Canterbury College student Daniel Prescott won the year nine boys title at the Canterbury secondary school cross-country championships last week. Daniel completed the 3km course in a time of 10min 54sec. He lead for most of the race and with some smart running along the home straight managed to pip Kaiapoi High School’s Pai Wynyard at the line by less than a second. Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Luke Johnstone finished third place to help his school win the year nine boys teams event. Fellow Christchurch BHS students Finn Allott, Will McMeeken and Kyan Trebed also recorded top 10 finishes. In the under 16 boys race Christchurch BHS’ Luca Borcoskie finished third in a time of 10min 33sec. Meanwhile, in the senior boys race there was a podium finish for Burnside High School’s Cameron Clarke which helped his school win the teams event. His performance was backed up by Daniel Roswell in fifth, Corban Straker in seventh and Thomas Anderson in ninth which saw Burnside pip St Bede’s College for the title. SPORT WESTERN NEWS Big cross-country effort from Daniel Prescott SPRINT START: The Canterbury secondary school cross-country championships were held at the former Ascot golf course last week. In the year nine girls race Villa Maria College student Bridie Restieaux finished am impressive third in 12min 18sec, just 5sec off the winner Xanthe Jane from Rangiora High School. In the under-16 girls Christchurch GHS’ Madeline Sharpe finished in third ahead of fellow schoolmate Emma Parke. Meanwhile, the senior girls team title went to Christchurch GHS in spite of no one in the team finishing on the podium. Strong performances from Ella McDonald in fourth and Rosie Trotter in fifth were complemented by Sophie Williamson (seventh), Lili Ovendale (14th), Olivia Kikstra (16th), Alyx Day (19th), Emilie Brunton (23rd) and Harriet Rowse (37th).
