Three residents from the<br />
<strong>Western</strong> <strong>News</strong> area have<br />
been recognised in the<br />
Queen’s Birthday Honours<br />
List for their contributions to<br />
the community<br />
New Zealand Order of<br />
Merit awards<br />
•Susan Bagshaw,<br />
Burnside<br />
Dr Bagshaw has become a<br />
Dame Companion of the New<br />
Zealand Order of Merit for her<br />
services to youth health.<br />
She has worked in the youth<br />
health sector for 30 years, is<br />
currently a senior lecturer in<br />
paediatrics at Otago University’s<br />
Christchurch centre, and a<br />
contract educator and trustee at<br />
the Collaborative for Research<br />
and Training in Youth Health<br />
and Development, which she<br />
founded.<br />
Dr Bagshaw is the Korowai<br />
Youth Well-Being Trust<br />
chairwoman, running the 298<br />
Youth Health Centre, where she<br />
has three teaching clinics.<br />
She established the youth<br />
one-stop shop in 1995 where she<br />
worked as a primary care youth<br />
health specialist until it closed in<br />
2010.<br />
She has been involved in<br />
advising the set-up of many<br />

youth health centres around<br />
the country, now known as the<br />
network of Youth One Stop<br />
Shops.<br />
Following the earthquakes,<br />
Dr Bagshaw collaborated with<br />
Action Works to bring together<br />
16 youth organisations to form<br />
the first youth hub in Barbadoes<br />
St in 2012.<br />
Most recently she has been<br />
developing a Youth Hub - Te<br />
Hurihanga o Rangatahi, a<br />
collaboration of health and social<br />
services and transitional housing<br />
for young people.<br />
Anglican Care became<br />
involved in 2017 to help purchase<br />
a site in central Christchurch.<br />
Dr Bagshaw has been<br />
New Zealand Association<br />
for Adolescent Health and<br />
Development president,<br />
International Association of<br />
Adolescent Health president, and<br />
was a founding member and key<br />
driver of the Society of Youth<br />
Health Professionals Aotearoa.<br />
•Yvonne Loader, Burnside<br />
Mrs Loader has become a<br />
Member of the New Zealand<br />
Order of Merit for her services to<br />
the sport of gliding.<br />
She has been heavily<br />
involved in the New Zealand<br />
gliding community and has<br />
instructed for the Omarama and<br />
Canterbury gliding clubs.<br />
Mrs Loader holds a<br />
number of national gliding<br />
records for altitude, distance,<br />
and speed, and set a world record<br />
in 1988 for greatest height gain<br />
by a glider which still stands<br />
today.<br />
She has flown several<br />
hundred hours, towing gliders<br />
as a volunteer tow pilot, and<br />
has towed for the Canterbury<br />
Gliding Club at national and<br />
international competitions, and<br />
for Youth Glide Development<br />
camps at Omarama.<br />
She served as secretary of the<br />
Canterbury club from 2000<br />
to 2014, and as secretary of<br />
the Omarama club from 2008<br />
to 2014, and was made a life<br />
member of Youth Glide New<br />
Zealand in 2014.<br />
For all three organisations, she<br />
has spent many hours applying<br />
for funding, with thousands of<br />
dollars raised which has gone<br />
towards safety equipment, such<br />
as parachutes and emergency<br />
location beacons.<br />
Queen’s Service Medal<br />
•Peter Cox, Ilam<br />
Mr Cox received a<br />
Queen’s Service Medal for<br />
his contribution to sporting<br />
communities in Canterbury over<br />
a number of decades.<br />
Throughout his career, he has<br />
advised on boards for private<br />
sector companies, state-owned<br />
enterprises, and other public<br />
entities. He has dedicated his<br />
expertise as a professional<br />
director to promoting<br />
and developing hockey in<br />
Canterbury. He was a founding<br />
trustee and board member of<br />
the New Zealand Academy of<br />
Sport – South Island in 1999<br />
until it merged into the Crown<br />
entity High Performance Sport<br />
New Zealand in 2011, where he<br />
continued to serve as a board<br />
member until 2015.<br />
After the earthquakes, he<br />
undertook a number of volunteer<br />
positions to support the hockey<br />
community. He is a trustee and<br />
treasurer of the Canterbury<br />
Artificial Surfaces Trust which<br />
leads the reconstruction of<br />
hockey facilities throughout<br />
the city. He is also a trusteedesignate<br />
for the Nga Puna Wai<br />
Sports Hub Trust.<br />
Mr Cox has contributed to<br />
military history with two<br />
books on New Zealand’s<br />
involvement in the Middle East<br />
during World War 2 – Good<br />
Luck to all the Lads (2008) and<br />
Desert War – the Battle of Sidi<br />
Rezegh (2015).<br />
