We do not need any more liquor outlets in our area, bearing in mind there are already more than enough between Ferrymead and Sumner and we have a New World supermarket offering good quality wines and beers already. There is already an unwanted and unpleasant problem in nearby Beachville Reserve with drinking and disorderly behaviour. We do not need tobacco items or RTDs sold there either. Already there are too many, with too easy access and the granting of far too many new licences. This is helping to increase the appalling statistics we have in New Zealand with too much alcohol being consumed, and the related problems of alcoholism, family violence, youth drinking, drink driving and health-related illnesses. The financial cost of the problems relating to the drinking and supply of alcohol and cigarettes and the human cost is eye-watering and we are at a loss to understand why the granting of yet another, and unwanted licence in our area, is even being considered. Anna Majendie – Not sure why Dr Fox mentioned the terror attacks . . . had nothing to do with alcohol. As far as I’m aware, the whole of Christchurch was affected. Robyn Pearson – Living within the required 1km radius of this proposed liquor application I put in a written submission as required back in January then attended the hearing. I felt obliged to do this as Jo Bloggs average Redcliffs resident representing the many in my street who literally couldn’t go through the requirements to make opposing submissions. However, even in my street, and I’ve spoken to most, no one had any enthusiasm for this application – sensing a liquor store could change what we have – many of whom had made a deliberate choice to live on the flat, close to amenities to enjoy the peace, quiet and safety that Redcliffs offers. It is a family and elderlyfriendly, safe, quaint little village with all essential amenities established, including a fully stocked New World supermarket with well stocked and monitored wine and beer products. Those who did manage to negotiate the hoops and hurdles of the process itself and attended the two-da hearing found it heavily weighted against the community for a number of reasons but mainly because the agencies – police, medical officer of health and city council licensing inspector ‘have no issue’ with this planned liquor outlet. Therefore, the whole procedure is expensive in time and resources. Basically, it’s a lot of rubber-stamping although the tribunal is yet to make its final decision. This is astonishing given alcohol-related harm is not only acknowledged by the Liquor Licensing Act 2012, but plenty of research shows when a liquor outlet opens, crime increases and violent crime is up to 50 per cent. It states harm from sale, purchase and consumption must be minimised. Also good order and amenity maintained. The greater the availability and visibility - the greater the alcohol-related harm. Alcohol dependency and related harm, depression and other forms of mental illness need to be addressed on all levels. Fine wine connoisseurs describe fine wine as superior, a standard of excellence, collectable outstanding, exceptional, aged, rare and, of course price is the defining factor. The plan submitted for this application shows very similar products to the usual liquor outlet with a ‘more acceptable in Redcliffs’ name. We have a national goal to be smoke-free by 2025. Mr Singh ‘forgot’ to include cigarettes in his application but intends to sell tobacco products. There are already three suppliers within 150m. Redcliffs Village does not need yet another cigarette supplier. The Coastal Pathway, designed for locals, visitors and tourists alike to exercise and enjoy our beautiful but already fragile coastline, is now under construction. Redcliffs Village is the only group of shops the pathway passes through. This proposed site is the only store on the Coastal Pathway. The city council’s pathway plans illustrate this corner as a cafe. Or else put in a bike shop catering for bikes, scooters trikes and e-bikes. We are a healthy fitnessconscious community and passionately love our tranquil and beautiful environments, such as Beachville Reserve (70m away from the proposed site). Trends show local parks and reserves become youth drinking lounges with increased noise, litter, petty crime and vandalism. A liquor outlet store just does not suit the village or its environment – it has the ability to change its character. There are schools, reserves, parks and three red zones all within a 1km radius – all attractive for unsupervised night drinkers. There are 39 licenced liquor outlets between the CBD and Sumner. Redcliffs residents are, in general, a highly mobile demographic, but there are also many elderly people living alone and vulnerable youth. The proposed site also has dozens of residential homes close by. This is a proposal to sell addictive products for private profit at the cost of the community.
