Pattaya celebrates 60 years 

of tourism this month with 

plenty to shout about. 

To mark the anniversary, 

the Pattaya International 

Fireworks Festival was held 

recently with a dazzling fireworks 

display in honor of His 

Majesty the King. Other activities 

that have been held or 

are being planned include the 

Pattaya Music Festival,the Bikini 

Beach Race and a range 

of trade meetings arranged 

by the Tourism Authority of 

Thailand. 

Prior to the events an open 

competition was held to 

choose the best design for 

a logo for the anniversary. In 

the end there were nearly 100 

submissions and the top five 

designs were put to a public 

vote on Facebook. Thanee 

Meuannuch won first prize of 

60,000 baht with an artwork 

that featured dolphins, palm 

tries, the city’s’ skyline a water 

skier in actionall embedded 

in the design. 

On the run up to the 60th anniversary, 

the last year has 

seen plenty of activity in Pattaya. 

The Terminal 21 shopping 

complex opened barely six 

months ago, revitalizing an 

area in North Pattaya and 

providing a superb retail and 

dining experience to tourists 

and residents alike. 

The original Amari Garden 

Hotel site is undergoing a 

complete reconstruction. 

New hotels are already 

springing up on the prime 

land that sits between the 

corner of the northern section 

of Pattaya’sbeach road and 

the dolphin roundabout. 

Another major transformation 

has been happening on the 

city’s central beach itself. All 

of Pattaya beach, from the 

Dusit Thani resort down to 

walking street has been progressively 

widened under a 

400 million baht scheme. 

It has transformed the beach 

from its original width of 

around 5 meters to more than 

35 meters. Without the operation 

there was a danger that 

coastal erosion would reduce 

the size of Pattaya beach 

even more. 

The new beach looks quite 

stunning compared to the 

original one, and anyone who 

is returning after having been 

away for a year or two will 

certainly appreciate the difference. 

The new wider beach reduces 

overcrowding and also 

means that boats and jet skis 

can be located further away 

from seating areas resulting 

in a more peaceful environment,all 

without any reduction 

in the fun activities that 

make for a great day out. 

Aside from the beach-widening 

scheme, plans are in 

the works for other massive 

infrastructure investments in 

the near future. A high-speed 

railway with a stop in Pattaya 

is being planned and the process 

is progressing well. This 

will provide extremely easy 

access to the resort city. 

U-tapao Airport is being expanded 

to handle more flights 

so that people can travel directly 

to Pattaya. This is part 

of the wider investment in the 

area under the Eastern Economic 

Corridor (EEC) Project. 

Private investment is also 

growing with a new retail mall 

potentially in the planning 

stages. 

Ronakit Ekasingh, deputy 

mayor of Pattaya, was quoted 

as saying, "A feasibility study 

for a big retail project from 

the shareholders of Iconsiam 

somewhere around the Jomtien 

area is being conducted.” 

The city has seen rising tourist 

numbers especially in 

the last few years, with the 

possibility of up to 20 million 

tourists this year, up from 16 

million in 2017 and 18 million 

in 2018.

REVENUE DEPARTMENT 

TO INCREASE 

TAXPAYER BASE 

According to the director-general 

of The Revenue Department, 

Ekniti Nitithanprapas, the departmentis 

looking to increase the number 

of taxpayers by 200,000 per 

year going forward. 

This comes after the department 

saw a robust increase of 300,000 

people joining the taxpayer base 

last year following a strong push to 

grow the numbers. 

The taxpayer base rose from 

10.9 million in 2017 to 11.2 million 

last year, raising the amount of additional 

revenue collected to 17.8 

billion baht, up from 17.4 billion baht 

a year earlier. 

Amongst the key drivers were 

new e-payment tax laws aimed at 

reeling in online sellers and fostering 

their co-operation to file tax returns. 

The e-payment tax law mandates 

banks to report customer account 

transactions when an account 

receives more than 3,000 money 

transfers in a year, or receives 

more than 2 million baht within 400 

transactions in the same period. 

This was to help differentiate solely 

salaried individuals as compared to 

those operating an online business. 

It was remarked that a salaried person 

would not expect to have such 

a large amount of bank activity as 

laid out in the thresholds. 

As well as the e-payment tax 

law other initiatives are in place to 

further facilitate taxpayers. A new 

system for online submission was 

introduced and this is being progressively 

streamlined. More than 

89 per cent of all tax filings were 

done by way of the online submission 

process last year. 

Another part of the plan involves 

the Revenue Department tweaking 

its image to be more user friendly. 

Revenue officers have been provided 

with a checklist that includes 

greeting customers with a smile 

and thanking taxpayers for using 

the service. Other improvements in 

the service will be to provide help at 

every possible juncture to facilitate 

the process of filing and to make 

suggestions to tax payers regarding 

various aspects of the service 

so that they can make payments or 

claim refunds without encountering 

difficulties. 

The Revenue Department has a 

target to collect 2 trillion baht in tax 

revenue during fiscal year 2019. 

The target was based on generally 

bullish economic indicators 

including prolonged high growth 

numbers. Within the forecasts, exports, 

for example, are projected to 

grow at 8 per cent per year. As well, 

the future forecasts are based on 

the price of oil remaining at around 

US$68 per barrel, something that is 

hard to predict in the current environment 

in a world where there are 

plenty of political risks. 

In 2020 the department is aiming 

for 2.1 trillion baht.

unveiled its first Subaru assembly plant, 

occupying more than 100,000m2 in Bangkok's

first plant outside Japan to fully produce Subaru 

cars in Asia. With an initial investment of ฿5 billion, 

the plant will deliver more than 6,000 Subaru 

Foresters in its first operating year to meet 

demand for Subaru vehicles in Southeast Asia.

Tan Chong Subaru Automotive (Thailand) 

Limited (TCSAT) is a joint venture between Hong 

Kong-listed TCIL and Japan's Subaru Corporation. 

TCIL, headquartered in Singapore, holds 

a 74.9 per cent stake through its subsidiary, TC 

Manufacturing and Assembly (Thailand) Limited, 

while Subaru Corporation holds the remaining 

25.1 per cent. Thailand's status as an automotive 

hub, with many Japanese automakers, established 

suppliers of components and strong 

localisation ability, meant the plant could be 

started up quickly and at a reasonable cost. In 

addition, trade agreements in ASEAN, further allow 

the cars to be competitively built and exported 

to meet growing demand. 

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester is the 

first completely knocked-down (CKD) model to 

be assembled at TCSAT. The cars will be distributed 

in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia 

by Motor Image Group, a wholly owned 

subsidiary of TCIL. Some 100 cars have already 

been delivered to customers in Thailand. Motor 

Image also reported record sales figures at the 

Bangkok International Motor Show in March, 

largely contributed by strong consumer interest 

in the Subaru Forester. 

Mr Glenn Tan, Deputy Chairman and Managing 

Director of TCIL, said, "This is truly a 

milestone for us, to be able to build Subaru cars 

ourselves in Thailand. From distribution, dealerships 

and aftersales, we are now also manufacturing 

Subaru cars. This strategic long- term 

move will allow us to better manage our supply 

chain, widen our product line up, localise better 

and be less dependent on supply from Japan. 

We will be better able to respond and meet consumer 

demand for Subaru vehicles in the region, 

and perhaps even beyond the region in future." 

World class vehicles produced locally 

TCSAT employs a team of Japanese staff to 

ensure that production standards and processes 

meet the same stringent levels as in Japan. In 

addition, high-performance robotics are used at 

several stages of the assembly process to ensure 

superior quality and zero defects. At the painting 

line, the pre-treatment, electrical deposits, primer 

and top coat are applied automatically. The 

key welding points of the car body and the sealer 

application for glass components are also automated 

to achieve total consistency. This is part 

of the technology and skills knowledge transfer 

which Subaru Corporation has committed to.

It’s not every day that someone launches 60, yes 60 satellites in to 

orbit in one go, but that is what SpaceX, the private rocket company of 

high-tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, did at the end of May by launching 

the first batch of 60 small satellites into low-Earth orbit for their new 

Starlink internet service.

much-needed cash for their larger 

ambitions in space. 

The launch came a week after 

two back-to-back countdowns for 

the mission were scrubbed - once 

due to high winds over the Cape 

and the next night in order to update 

satellite software and “triple-check” 

all systems. 

The 60 satellites flown into 

space were released into orbit as 

planned about an hour after Thursday’s 

launch, and the Falcon 9’s 

“We think this is a key stepping 

stone on the way toward establishing 

a self-sustaining city on Mars 

and a base on the moon,” according 

to ElonMusk the CEO of SpaceX, 

who is also chief executive officer of 

automaker Tesla Inc. 

At least 12 launches carrying

of most of the world, for now, Starlink 

is only authorized for U.S. operations.

SpaceX said it would probably 

take another day to learn whether 

all the satellites deployed were functioning 

properly. Each weighs about 

500 pounds (227 kg), making them 

the heaviest payload carried aloft by 

SpaceX to date. 

They represent the initial phase 

of a planned constellation capable 

of beaming signals for high-speed 

internet service from space to paying 

customers around the globe. 

SpaceX sees the new Starlink 

venture as an important new revenue

Internet giant True Corporation posted a profit 

of 1.5 billion 

baht in the first quarter of 2019, a marked increase. 

It was in sharp contrast to a 673 million 

baht loss during the same period last year. Significant 

expansion of its cellular network income, in a 

large part, was behind the stellar numbers. 

Kittinut Tikawan, co-president of True, was 

quoted as saying, "We are pleased to see strong 

improvement in core earnings and profitability in 

the first quarter,” adding, “This solid performance 

happened because we prioritized cost and productivity 

measures and ran targeted marketing 

campaigns that matched consumers' needs." 

Cellular network revenue rose 7.6 per cent 

year-on-year at a time when competitors were 

facing a 3.5 per cent contraction. This indicated 

that True was winning market share at a fast rate. 

Mr. Kittinut was also quoted as saying, "True 

Online maintained its competitive edge in the 

broadband internet market with value-driven fibreto-the-home 

and 1Gbps [gigabit per second] propositions 

attracting more high-quality subscribers.” 

True reported that it had 29.6 million True- 

Move H subscribers, close to thirty per cent of the 

total market share, as well as 4 million True Visions 

subscribers. 

The company that owns the 30-year-old Hua 

Hin landmark that is the Centara Grand Beach 

Resort & Villas Hua Hin has negotiated an interim 

one-year extension to its land lease with the 

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) as talks continue 

with regard to renewing the contract for the longer 

term. 

The new 2019 Joint State and Private Investment 

Act that came into force on March 10th 

2019 lead to the requirement to draft a new lease 

agreement. Discussions are expected to be ongoing 

until September this year. 

One of the key caveats is the requirement for 

investment of 3.2 billion baht to be made to develop 

the land further.

by the SRT 

In 2020 new excise tax rates will come into 

force for 

motorcycles based on CO2 emissions, taxing 

those with a higher CO2 emission at a higher rate. 

This is a change from the current structure, 

which has bands of excise duty for various engine 

sizes. 

Although increases are only slight, Honda expects 

that excise rates could rise in the range of 

0.5 to 3 per cent for vehicles that have 110 to 150 

cc engine sizes. 

A source was quoted as saying, "The new tax 

means that for every 10,000-baht increase in retail 

price, the excise tax will rise 50 baht based 

on the new calculation for a motorcycle with an 

engine of less than 150cc," adding, "For example, 

taxes will rise by 200-250 baht for motorcycles 

priced at 40,000-50,000 baht." 

For some larger motorcycles, excise rates are 

expected to rise more sharply since these vehicles 

sometimes have higher emission levels.

FOR TOURISTS 

Cambodia is eyeing the Middle 

East for tourists in a bid to diversify 

and at the same time reduce its reliance 

on Chinese visitors. 

The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism 

has been promoting the country 

at the recent Arabian Travel Market 

2019, which was held in Dubai in 

April. 

Top Sopheak, spokesman for 

the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism 

was quoted as saying, “China is now 

Cambodia’s biggest tourism market. 

There are also a lot of tourists from 

Asia and the European Union,” adding, 

“tourists from Islamic countries 

are now a priority.To attract them, 

we are promoting Cambodia in the 

Middle East, and we hope to see 

more and more tourists from this region 

in years to come.” 

The emergence of daily flights 

with Emirates and Qatar airways 

has further helped the tourism market 

in Cambodia. 

Although there are no direct 

flights as yet, visitors can choose 

between flights to Phnom Penh from 

Dubai and Doha via Yangon, Bangkok 

and Ho Chi Minh. 

Thoun Sinan, chairman of the 

Cambodian chapter of the Pacific 

Asia Travel Association was quoted 

as saying, “Targeting tourists in the 

Middle East is a way to make the 

sector more sustainable.” 

A push to increase the number 

of outlets with Halal food offerings is 

in the works to further promote the 

country. 

INDONESIA’S TRADE 

DEFICIT WIDENS 

Indonesia reported a worsening 

of its trade deficit in recent figures 

for April 2019. The trade deficit 

came in at US$2.5 billion, marking 

its place as the worst ever deficit in 

history. 

The numbers come in after a 

US$671 million surplus in the month 

before. Economists had already

figure was expected to be only 

around $US500 million. 

Within the numbers, exports fell 

further than expected,down 13.1 

per centyear on year, as compared 

to an expected drop of just 7.15

dropped by 6.58%, this was smaller 

than the expected contraction of 

12.1 per cent. 

Householders stocking up for 

Ramadan was one of the explanations 

for the robustness of the import 

data. Other factors included the 

ongoing trade impasse between the 

U.S. and China. 

Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati 

was quoted as saying, "The 

economy is under very serious global 

pressure due to uncertainties, we 

must continue to look at our domestic 

aspects and we must remain vigilant.”

AIRLINES’ CONFIRMS 

ORDER FOR 737 

MAX’S 

Singapore Airlines will still go 

ahead with its order of thirty-one 

737 Max planes from Boeing. 

This comes even after Silk Air, a 

part owned subsidiary, grounded its

which has yet to be lifted, will 

impact plans for a merger between 

the two airlines and will also affect 

future growth plans for another subsidiary, 

low cost airline Scoot. Yet 

the complications are expected to 

be short lived

dropped by nearly 50 per cent to 

S$682.7 million, even though the 

airline posted its highest ever revenue 

and high passenger numbers.

What is a Right of Superficies? 

Superficies (See-Tee-Nua-Tee- 

Din) is a legal term referring to anything 

placed upon and attached to 

the ground, and most commonly 

refers to a building erected on land 

owned by another. A right of superficies 

is a real property right for a 

specified period whereby a landowner 

grants another person (superficiary), 

the use of their land and 

to own the structures built upon it, 

without obtaining ownership rights 

over the land. 

This right is only valid and enforceable 

after completing the registration 

with the Land Department. 

Such registration shall make the 

public aware of any burden on the 

property. It is, therefore, enforceable 

against any third-party such as 

a successor to the property.

Can I transfer or inherit the right

You can transfer the right of superficies 

if you wish to sell the right

and as long as there is no damage 

or alterations in the property.

but unlike usufruct, wherein its 

rights and benefits expire upon the

MARRYING A THAI AND GETTING 

A MARRIAGE VISA 

Every year thousands of tourists 

come on holiday to Thailand and not 

only fall in love with the country but 

often with a Thai lady (or man) also. 

The rates of marriage between 

Thai nationals and foreigners is rising 

and it is no longer just the older 

foreigners who are coming here and 

finding love. Many younger guys 

(or girls) in their 20’s are meeting 

the partner of their dreams from a 

foreign land. Some even ‘meet’ before 

they actually arrive in Thailand 

through social media networks or 

dating sites. We will cover the legalities 

of meeting this way later when 

we discuss visas. 

If you are in a relationship with a 

Thai national and wish to secure a 

visa based on your relationship, you 

need to understand the processes 

and legal requirements involved in 

securing a valid Thai marriage visa. 

This visa offers foreigners a 1 

year extension of stay in the Kingdom 

and can be renewed on an annual 

basis. 

Applying while in Thailand 

If you are on a tourist visa during 

a stay in Thailand you will need to 

travel to a neighbouring country and 

make your application at the Thai 

consulate in that country. Popular 

countries to visit for this purpose 

are Laos, Malaysia and Cambodia. 

The same paperwork as mentioned 

above will be required to secure a 

new 90-day non-immigrant visa.

What documents are needed for 

a Thai marriage visa? 

You will apply for the marriage 

visa at a Thai Immigration office. If 

the wedding ceremony takes place 

in Thailand the following documents 

need to be presented: 

● Passports: Your passport, your 

wife’s passport and copies of both 

● ID card: The husband or wife’s 

ID card 

● Household registration document: 

The husband or wife’s household 

registration. This is known as a 

Tabian Baan in Thai. 

● Marriage certificate: Your legally 

issued marriage certificate. 

● Proof of finances: You will 

need to produce your personal Thai 

bank book that shows funds of at 

least 400,000 baht in your account. 

This should be accompanied by 

a letter from your bank confirming 

these funds. Or legal (with a 

work permit) income in Thailand of 

40,000 THB. Or income from overseas 

paid into a Thai bank account 

of at least 40,000 THB per month. 

● Place of residence: A drawn 

map showing the location of your 

current residence 

● Proof of residence: If the home 

is owned by the husbandor wife, the 

household registration documents 

should be presented. If renting then 

a copy of ID card and a copy of the 

home owners house registration 

documents 

● Photographs: 2 photos of husband 

and wife inside their home and 

2 more of you both outside showing 

the address of the property. 

A Thai marriage visa is one of 

the most complex types of long term 

visa, along with the business visa. 

We strongly advise seeking professional 

help as the list of required 

documents is not conclusive and 

more documents can be requested 

at the discretion of the immigration 

officer. 

Particularly if the person marrying 

the Thai is not from a western 

country, the officials may become 

suspicious that the marriage is purely 

to facilitate a visa and request further 

proof of the relationship. 

In all cases the immigration officer 

will most likely visit your home, 

particularly for your first application. 

They will want to see that you live 

together as a couple/family and may 

even visit your neighbours to ask 

questions about you.

WORDPRESS WEBSITE 

Anyone who is running an online 

business or has a website for their 

bricks and mortar business should 

carry out a regular 3 month audit to 

make sure that their website is in tip 

top condition.

add on’s like your contact form. 

Next, check your plugins. Out of 

date plugins can cause vulnerabilities 

in your site and make it easier 

to get hacked, which nobody wants! 

Update any plugins and also make 

sure that you are running a security 

plugin such as iThemes Security to 

protect your website from malware 

and hackers. 

Now, check your theme for updates, 

if you are using a free theme 

from Wordpress you can easily update 

this from the Themes area in 

the Appearance tab. If you are using 

a paid premium theme from a site 

such as Themeforest you should 

login to the site and download the 

theme directly to your computer. 

Change the name of the theme file 

and upload it to your Wordpress site 

directly, this way it will not overwrite 

your current theme as it has a different

the updated theme you could easily 

switch back to the old theme and

organic farms in Pattaya 

Toscana Italian and Moom Talay Thai restaurants are situated side by side on Pattaya’s 

main beach road near to soi 6/1. They are the brainchild of Luca Marchetti, who, having 

grown up on a farm in the mountains just north of Tuscany, has been able to provide a 

rustic alternative to other eateries. 

One special feature of the twin 

restaurant enterprise is that nearly all 

of the produce is home grown comes 

from his two farms in the Eastern part 

of Pattaya. One farm provides the vegetables 

and the other is an organic animal 

farm. 

have also been recently introduced 

and other varieties of fruit and vegetables 

are constantly being added. 

Vegetable crops are rotated regularly 

and some free-range chickens are 

on site to help with the regeneration of 

precious minerals in the ground. Luca 

does not use any chemicals at all on 

his farm so customers can enjoy totally 

organic food on their plates. 

The vegetable farm covers 5,000 

square meters and is located between 

the Charknok and Mabrachan reservoirs, 

near to Khao Din temple. It has 

two full-time staff on the property carefully 

tending to the vegetable crops every 

day. There is also a farmhouse on 

the land. Nine varieties of salad vegetables 

are produced including beans, 

tomatoes, Thai herbs, rosemary, lettuce, 

parsley, onions, rocket and celery 

as well as spinach and others. It took 

some time to cultivate rosemary as it 

only grew in certain places and quite 

a lot of experimentation was required 

to find the best location. Lemon trees 

The organic animal farm is larger 

covering some15,000 square meters 

and is situated in Huay Yai. Here, eight 

full time staff work to tend the various 

animals on the farm including goats, 

pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits 

and cows, which were recently added 

in 2017. This is an all-natural organic 

farm and antibiotics are not used at all.

There are four different varieties of 

duck including Mullard and Muscovy 

and a wide range of different chickens, 

which has grown to include Rhode Island 

Reds, Leghorns, Australorp and 

strains from Russia, Germany and the 

Czech republic. 

Chickens on the farm provide 

around 200 eggs per day, enough for 

the restaurant’s daily needs and also 

enough for breeding purposes. 

The farm continues to evolve, 

adapt and expand. New pigpens were 

installed to accommodate a recently 

introduced South African ‘Boer’ population. 

The total pig population on the 

farm has increased to around 500. 

As well, there are some 600 goats 

also on site. Goat meat has been especially 

welcomed by the restaurant’s Russian 

customers, with goat stew and roast 

leg of goat both popular dishes. Luca believes 

that goat tastes better than lamb. 

It’s affordable too. Goat’s meat is available 

at 1500 baht per kilo, which would 

serve an average of 4 people. 

Luca picks his vegetables on the 

same day that they’re served to his 

customers. In addition, the animal 

farm provides all of the required daily 

cow’s milk that the restaurant needs 

and some of this is used in the production 

of a variety of cheeses including 

mozzarella cheese. 

Both of the pristine farms require 

a lot of effort in terms of their upkeep, 

however the dividends have paid 

off since Toscana and Moom Talay 

are both held in the highest regards 

amongst customers and reviewers 

alike. 

The restaurants are very popular, 

serving between 500 and 600 patrons 

a day in high season.

CARBON DIOXIDE 

EMISSIONS IN ASEAN 

COUNTRIES STILL 

RISING 

Carbon dioxide emissions in 

ASEAN countries continued to rise 

as an increased demand for cooling 

and heating weighed on resources. 

Using data gathered for the 10-year 

period from 2006 to 2016, Thailand 

saw emissions grow from 232 million 

tons to 342 million tons, an increase 

of 47.4 per cent. Of this, 65 million 

tons of CO2 emissions in 2016 were 

from coal compared to just 44 million 

tons in 2006. This represented an increase 

of 47.7 per cent. 

Vietnam saw some of the largest 

increases in the ASEAN region with 

total emissions growing from 92 million 

tons to 219 million tons during 

the same period, an increase of 138 

per cent. CO2 emissions from coal 

increased a whopping 204 per cent 

from 44 million tons to 134 million 

tons. 

Other larger countries in Asia had 

similar increases but had much larger 

emissions numbers. For example 

China’s total CO2 emissions rose 

from 6,740 million tons to 10,548 

million tons, with coal emissions rising 

from 5,701 million tons to 8,462 

million tons, a rise of 48.3 per cent. 

Coal emissions were cited as the 

single largest culprit of global warming, 

and were directly responsible 

for a 0.3 degree increase in global 

temperatures over the period.

Celsius on April 22nd 2019. 

On October 27th 2016 Indonesia 

saw its highest ever temperature of 

39.5 degrees Celsius.

BRITISH COUNCIL EYES 

IMPROVED ENGLISH TEACHING 

The British Council is looking 

to increase its presence in the 

very important English teaching 

sector. As well, it will aim to further 

enhance its relationship with Thai 

institutions through not only language, 

but also by way of science 

and art. 

The council has a mission for 

2020 to increase English standards 

in Thailand’s schools. One 

way it will look to achieve this is 

to provide new teaching methods 

to teachers based on the Regional 

English Training Centre (RETC) 

project. 

Andrew Glass, director of the 

British Council Thailand was quoted 

as saying, "Initiated in March 

2016, RETC aims to transform 

English teaching in Thai primary 

and secondary schools in line with 

the Education Ministry's policy to 

significantly raise the standard of 

English teachers in Thailand from 

the 'grammar-vocabulary' memorization 

system to focus more on 

communication.” 

The Regional English Training 

Centre project has trained 17,000 

teachers in Thailand out of a total 

of 40,000 that were targeted. 

Ninety percent of teachers felt 

that they 

had greater 

confidence 

in 

teaching 

English in 

a communicative 

manner 

after completing 

the 

course. 

Nearly 

all of the 

teachers 

had improved lesson management 

and nearly three quarters had

project go on, but as Thailand just 

had a general election we have to

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE 

The U.S. Dollar climbed even as 

the Federal Reserve remained tightlipped 

about any future interest rate 

moves. With the market anticipating 

a possible dovish stance, this came 

as a potential headwind to that position. 

Yet the Dollar wavered only 

slightly, since the wording of the 

most recent Fed statement was ambiguous 

and left the door open for an 

interest rate move in either direction. 

The DXYDollar index, an index that 

measures the U.S. Dollar’s value 

against a basket of major currencies 

moved from a low of 96.96 to hit a 

high of 98.01. Against the Thai Baht, 

the U.S. Dollar dipped from 31.96 

to 31.47 but rose back to 31.83, 

indicating a resurgence of dollar 

strength. 

The British Pound had been in 

a tight range of 1.2950 to 1.3150 to 

the U.S. Dollar for an extended time, 

but recently fell out of that range to 

hit a low of 1.2660. The move was 

pronounced, with 9 straight days of 

declines, the longest unbroken period 

of decreases in 20 years. The 

catalyst appears to be a breakdown 

in cross-party Brexit talks and more 

political uncertainty ahead. Whether 

the move becomes deeper remains 

to be seen, but a long period of sideways 

movement can sometimes 

lead to a sharp breakout. Against 

the Thai Baht, the pound’s drop was 

cushioned somewhat by a rise in 

the U.S. Dollar,with the rate moving 

from 41.33 down to 40.51. 

The U.S. Dollar vs. Japanese 

Yen cross rate has been falling, solidifying 

the Yen’s status as a safe 

haven at times of stock market volatility 

as seen after President Trump 

announced an increase in tariffs on 

Chinese imports. The cross rate 

moved from 111.90 down to 109.95. 

A drop in the cross rate indicates 

a strengthening of the Yen since 1 

U.S. Dollar buys less of the Japanese 

currency. This strengthening 

is evidenced by taking a look at the 

Japanese Yen vs. Thai Baht spot 

rate, which rose from 0.2815 to 

0.2872. 

The Russian Ruble has remained 

remarkably flat with the 

rate moving from 64.01 to 64.70 

to the US Dollar after hitting a high 

of 65.97. With non-Russia policies 

making the headlines it would seem 

fitting that the Russian Ruble would 

remain subdued. Against the Thai 

baht, the Ruble weakenedslightly 

from 0.498 to 0.491 after dropping to 

a low of 0.481. 

The Euro / U.S. Dollar cross-rate 

saw declines in keeping with a stronger 

dollar. The Euro fell from 1.1263 

to the Dollar to settle at 1.1162 in 

largely choppy but ultimately directionless 

trade. News of a delay of 

US Auto tariffs did little to energize

WHAT IS LAPAROSCOPIC GALLBLADDER 

REMOVAL SURGERY 

(LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY)? 

What is the gallbladder? 

Your gallbladder is a small organ 

in your upper abdomen. The abdomen 

is the area in the middle of your 

body that holds many organs, including 

the stomach and gallbladder. 

What does the gallbladder do? 

The gallbladder collects and 

stores a liquid called bile that helps 

your body break down food. Small, 

hard deposits called gallstones can 

form in the gallbladder. This is a 

common condition. If your gallstones 

cause health problems, doctors might 

do surgery to remove it. For example, 

you might need surgery if your gallbladder 

is no longer working correctly 

and you have pain. Your doctor will 

talk with you about this. 

In the past, doctors made a large 

cut (incision) in the belly to remove 

the gallbladder. This is called open 

surgery. Today, doctors can do this 

surgery with tiny instruments and just 

a few small cuts. This is called laparoscopic 

surgery, because the main 

instrument is called a laparoscope. 

Minimally invasive surgery is a general 

term for surgery with these small 

instruments. 

What Causes Gallbladder 

Problems? 

Gallstones are often the cause. 

These small, hard deposits form in 

the gallbladder. They can also get 

into the bile duct, which connects the 

gallbladder with your intestines. 

You are more likely to get gallstones 

if you: 

• Are a woman, 

• Have had children, 

• Are overweight, or 

• Are over 40. 

You might also get gallstones if 

other people in your family had them. 

Doctors do not have a consistent 

way of preventing gallstones. 

What are the symptoms of 

gallbladder problems? 

Symptoms can include: 

• Sharp pain in your abdomen, 

• Nausea and vomiting, 

• Indigestion, 

• Fever, and 

• Yellow skin – Jaundice is the 

medical term for skin and eyes that 

look yellow. You might get jaundice if 

gallstones block your bile duct. 

How do doctors find gallbladder 

problems? 

Your doctor will probably order a 

test called an ultrasound. It shows 

the inside of the body using sound 

waves. You are awake during the 

test, and it does not hurt. 

If you need more tests, you might 

have a CT scan or a test called a 

HIDA scan. The HIDA scan uses an 

injection of dye to show how well 

your gallbladder and bile duct are 

working. 

How do doctors treat gallbladder 

problems? 

Taking the gallbladder out is usually 

the best way to treat gallbladder 

problems. You might get some relief 

from changing your diet. For example, 

eating less fat can help. But gallstones 

rarely go away on their own. 

You might have heard about 

treatments to break up gallstones or 

make them melt away (dissolve). Unfortunately, 

these do not usually work 

well. 

What are the advantages of 

laparoscopic gallbladder surgery? 

• Smaller incision – Several small 

incisions, each less than one (1) inch 

long, instead of a 5- to 7-inch incision 

for open surgery. 

• Less pain than after open surgery. 

• Quicker recovery than open surgery 

– You might go home the same 

day you have your surgery. You can 

also go back to regular activities 

more quickly. 

How Should I Prepare for Laparoscopic 

Gallbladder Removal? 

You will need a full physical examination. 

You might need some 

tests to make sure you are healthy 

enough for surgery. 

The surgeon who will do your 

laparoscopic gallbladder removal 

will talk with you about the risks and 

benefits of surgery. Then you will 

sign a form saying you understand 

and agree to the operation. Your 

surgeon’s office will tell you what to 

do and avoid before surgery. The 

exact instructions depend on your 

surgeon, but here are some common 

things to do. 

• Take a shower the night before 

surgery or the same morning. 

Your surgeon might ask you to use 

an antibiotic soap. Please do not 

shave your belly area. 

• Stop eating and drinking at the 

time your doctor tells you before 

surgery. 

• The morning of your surgery, 

you may take medications your 

doctor told you are allowed. Take 

them with just a sip of water. 

• You might need to stop taking 

certain medicines before surgery. 

These include blood thinners, supplements, 

and medicines that affect 

your immune system. Talk to your 

surgeon when you schedule your 

laparoscopic gallbladder removal. 

You will need someone to drive 

you home from surgery. You will 

also need someone to stay with you 

overnight. Ask your doctor or nurse 

how much help you might need. 

How is Laparoscopic 

Gallbladder Removal Done? 

You will have general anesthesia 

for your laparoscopic gallbladder 

removal. This means you are 

asleep during surgery. When surgery 

is finished, the surgeon closes 

your incisions with tiny stitches, 

staples, surgical tape or glue. 

These disappear as you heal, so 

the doctor does not need to remove 

them later. 

Once you are asleep, the surgeon 

makes an incision near your 

belly button and inserts a small 

device called a port. The port creates 

an opening that your surgeon 

can use to fill the abdomen with 

gas. This creates space to do the 

operation. Next, they insert a small 

camera through the port. The camera 

shows the surgery on a screen 

in the operating room. Once the 

surgeon can see clearly, they put 

in more ports to insert long, narrow 

instruments. Finally, they gently disconnect 

your gallbladder and take it 

out through one of the incisions. Most 

operations need 3 or 4 incisions, but 

some have more. 

Will I be in pain? 

You will feel some pain after surgery. 

Pain at the incision sites and 

in your abdomen is common. You 

might also have pain in your shoulders. 

This is from the air put into your 

abdomen during the operation. The 

shoulder pain should go away in 24 

to 48 hours. 

You can take non-prescription 

medications to relieve pain, unless 

your doctor tells you not to. Acetaminophen 

(Tylenol®) and ibuprofen 

(Advil®) are examples of non-prescription 

pain medications. Putting 

ice on your incisions can also help. 

Ask your doctor or nurse about the 

correct way to use ice. 

Your surgeon might prescribe a 

small amount of narcotic pain medicine 

to help you with pain. Many 

people recover from surgery without 

taking any narcotic pain medicine, 

but some will need narcotics for a few 

days. If you have questions about 

pain after surgery, ask the surgeon or 

your nurses. They should be able to 

tell you how long the pain will last and 

what to expect. 

You might feel sick to your stomach 

(nauseated) or throw up (vomit) 

after your surgery. Having surgery 

and anesthesia can make this happen. 

You should feel better in a day 

or two. Tell your doctor or nurse if 

you keep vomiting or feeling nauseated. 

Activities 

You should be as active as your 

body allows. Doctors recommend 

walking. You can go up and down 

stairs on the day of your surgery. The 

next day, you may take your bandages 

off, if you have them, and take a 

shower. You can expect to feel a little 

better each day after going home. If 

not, please call your doctor. 

You can probably go back to normal 

activity about a week after laparoscopic 

gallbladder removal. 

If you do a physical job with 

heavy lifting, ask your doctor when 

you can go back to work. You can 

drive 24 hours after you had anesthesia 

if you are not taking narcotic 

pain medicines. 

If you had an open surgery with 

a large incision, you need more time 

to recover. You will probably need to 

stay in the hospital for a few days after 

surgery. Expect to go back to full 

activities in 4 to 6 weeks. You will 

probably recover more slowly in other 

ways, too. Your doctor can tell you 

what to expect.

CP CONSORTIUM CHOSEN FOR 

HIGH-SPEED AIRPORT RAIL PROJECT 

The concession for the highspeed 

railway link that will connect 

Suvarnabhumi airport with both Don 

Mueang airport and U-Tapao has 

been awarded in principle to a consortium 

lead by CP group. 

If you think the company sounds 

familiar from a walk around your local 

supermarket, then yes, it is the 

same holding company that owns CP 

Foods. 

However CP Group (Charoen 

Pokphand Group), does not only 

have its fingers in the retail food market. 

The Group is a behemoth. It operates 

all of the nearly ten thousand 

7-11 convenience stores in Thailand. 

It is the sole license holder for KFC, 

Wal-Mart, and Makro stores. It is also 

licensed to brew Heineken beer and 

to make Honda motorcycles amongst 

many other products. Another one of 

its subsidiary companies is True Corporation 

with a commanding share 

of the broadband internet and mobile 

data markets. Other associated 

companies include a very large agricultural 

arm, CP Food Mart chain, 

CP Land and a host of insurance and 

finance subsidiaries. 

CP is famous in Thailand but also 

operates around the Asian region 

with businesses in Japan and China 

amongst other countries. 

The company has around US$15 

billion in revenue and a number of its 

affiliate companies have been floated 

on various stock markets over the 

years. 

One of the reasons for the contract 

win for the rail project is that 

the consortium provided the lowest 

quote for the project.

According to the State Railway 

of Thailand’s (SRT) acting governor, 

Worawut Mala, the SRT expects to 

sign a contract for the 220 billion baht 

project on 15th June, following a marathon 

final meeting in May that lasted 

14 hours. 

The extended meeting took place 

to cover around 60 sticking points, 

which although were minor, all required 

significant negotiation. 

Among them were concerns if the 

SRT was unable to transfer land to 

the consortium in a timely manner. 

Compensation packages were discussed 

for both construction costs 

and lost time, but in the end the consortium 

agreed that it would only seek 

compensation for time lost if such a 

situation was to occur. 

It was a valid move to explore 

such a scenario since procuring land 

for large projects can certainly take 

time especially if existing landowners 

embark on lengthy legal proceedings. 

Even difficulties securing a small 

piece of land can hold up a large project. 

Once complete, the project will 

enable travel between the three airports 

to be streamlined and will also 

provide a significant upgrade to transport 

infrastructure along the Eastern 

Economic Corridor, (EEC).
