signal
tower
lights
• By Louis Day
SUMNER resident Toni
Pengelly has a special
connection to the Cave Rock
signal tower.
Her grandfather Jack Kerr
served as a crew member for
the Sumner Lifeboat Institution
from 1940 to 1987.
During his time as skipper, he
relied on information and lighting
from the signal tower, which
served as their control tower, to
complete rescues.
However, the tower has not
been illuminated for at least 10
years.
Ms Pengelly, alongside the
Sumner-Redcliffs Historical
Society, is on a mission to get
the lights back on the signal
tower.
The city council has said it
would be open to the idea of
lights being reinstalled but has
no funding available. Formal
access agreements would also
be required but have not been
given at this stage
Port works
delay
electricity
cable
project
• By Louis Day
A MULTI-MILLION dollar
electricity upgrade for Lyttelton,
Corsair Bay and Cass Bay has
been delayed.
A $3 million, 2.2km electricity
cable was pulled through Lyttelton
Tunnel in April.
Orion general manager of
infrastructure Steve Macdonald
said it was the biggest cable pull
in Orion’s history and possibly in
New Zealand’s.
It was originally expected that
the new cable would be fully operational
by the end of May.
However, the cable is now not
expected to be operational until
the end of July.
“Orion opted to delay their project
while other works were being
undertaken in the area where
their cable is to be laid. This delay
is to ensure the integrity of the
cable,” he said.
The new cable which consists
of three separate single core
cables has a power rating of 10
megawatts, three megawatts
greater than the current average
demand which allows capacity for
growth.
WHAT A great idea on page 1 today –
light up the signal tower on Cave Rock.
Resident Toni Pengelly and the Sumner-
Redcliffs Historical Society are behind the
initiative.
Lighting up the signal tower would be
great for the business area and Cave Rock itself.
Toni’s grandfather and uncles did their bit for the lifeboat
institution over the years, where they relied on information
relayed to them from the signal tower while out on rescues.
And the lit up tower also acted like a lighthouse in poor
weather.
The spotlight for paying for the lighting will go squarely on
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board. The city
council says it doesn’t have anything in the coffers for it.
Battle over reserve toilets ends
• By Louis Day
THE controversial toilets which
led to the city council being
threatened with legal action will
not return to Britomart Reserve
in Akaroa next cruise ship
season.
The temporary Portacom
toilets were put in the reserve
in December to cater for the
increasing number of cruise ship
passengers coming to the area.
However, the city council
placed them there without
resource consent.
City council manager of
community parks Al Hardy
said the failure to get resource
consent for the toilets was an
oversight by staff, which was
described as “embarrassing” by
Banks Peninsula city councillor
and Deputy Mayor Andrew
Turner.
This led to the body corporate,
which represents the Bruce
Waterfront Apartments across
the road from the reserve,
threatening the city council with
legal action.
The city council is now
planning to increase the capacity
of the Place de la Poste toilets at
2 Rue Balguerie to accommodate
tourists. The construction of
the new toilet block is due to be
completed by Christmas.
A spokesman for the body
corporate was delighted with
the news the toilets would not be
returning.
“Hoorah. It’s great to hear that
they are gone and they won’t be
coming back. That is just great
news from where we are sitting,”
he said.
He said the toilets were a
massive nuisance for people
staying in the apartments.
“We had a lot of disgruntled
owners and guests, particularly
when they were pumping (the
toilets) out as early as they could.
They were basically doing it at
daybreak, it was well before seven
o’clock.”
Fire rages, homes at risk
HEDGE FIRE
It took 14 firefighters to
contain a 5m hedge fire in
Diamond Harbour on Sunday.
The fire was close to three
properties on Whero Ave
and took 15min to put out. It
started after ashes were put
under the hedge by one of the
residents. The fire destroyed
the hedge and a garden shed.
Diamond Harbour Volunteer
Fire Brigade fire chief Bob
Palmer said it was important
people disposed of ashes
safely, drowning them until
they are completely cold
before dumping them near
any vegetation.
WHARF IDEAS WANTED
The city council will
start collecting ideas from
the public on the design of
the new Akaroa wharf. A
meeting to share ideas will be
held at the Akaroa Bowling
Club today at 1pm. Public
consultation for the wharf
will be open until June 26.
The current wharf had
a structural condition
assessment late last year,
which identified it was
reaching the end of its life.
This is due to the declining
condition of the hardwood
timber, particularly the
timber below water.
Feedback on
Godley House
site sought
• By Louis Day
DIAMOND Harbour residents
will get a chance to have their say
on the Godley House site’s future.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said public
consultation on what will happen
to the reserve land around
Godley House will start next
month.
“The consultation will involve
asking the community what
they would like to use the area
for, keeping in mind the land is
a reserve under the Reserves Act
1977,” he said.
Diamond Harbour Community
Association chairman Richard
Suggate said there was a wide
range of views on what should
happen to the site.
Mr Rutledge said the
foundations of Godley House will
remain untouched.
“These foundations have
heritage value and form part
of the history of the area. To
protect the foundations for future
generations, they should not be
built over, removed or damaged,”
he said.
The site was last occupied by
the Dark Star Ale House and
Cafe, which closed at the start of
March.
Sumner lifeboat relied on tower signals
•From page 1
Ms Pengelly said they would
be approaching the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board for funding once they
had been granted permission to
progress with the project.
She thought the lights would
add to the beauty of Sumner.
“I remember the days the cross
was lit up, it was fabulous, it was
just spectacular. The absence
of the lights has been a real loss
to the community since they
stopped functioning over the
last 10 to 15 years in terms of
•From page 1
The project is the culmination of
three years of planning by Orion
to address reliability and resilience
issues with the power supply to
Lyttelton.
The new 11kV electricity cable
will run in tandem with the two
existing 11kV cables which run
over the Port Hills.
“The lines over the hill are vulnerable
to weather, vegetation and
pests. With the new cable we have
alternatives to keep the power on,”
Mr Macdonald said.
“It gives us the ability to grow
and in the event of a failure we can
still supply residents and the port
with electricity.”
aesthetics and the historical
significance,” she said.
The signal mast was constructed
on Cave Rock by the regional
council in 1864. This was in
response to demands from
shipping companies to make
the Sumner entrance safer for
trading vessels travelling to the
Heathcote wharves at Woolston.
Prior to the advent of electric
light, the original signals on the
mast had specific meanings.
One was three red balls hung
from the mast which meant the
bar was dangerous. A red flag at
the masthead meant bad weather.
The original signal station
became the Sumner Lifeboat Institution’s
control tower in 1958
when a base radio transmitter
was installed to communicate
directly with the lifeboat when
she was at sea. The station was
staffed by shore crew with
binoculars who could update the
crew with information rapidly.
Rescue operations were
directed from Cave Rock until
1980 when a mobile control
was installed in the lifeboat’s
Land-Rover.
RELOCATION: Nine peacocks have been moved from the Port Hills to a farm in
Marlborough after five were shot last month.
Under-threat peacocks
moved off Port Hills
• By Louis Day
NINE peacocks were
relocated from the Port
Hills on Monday after five
were shot last month.
The peacocks have been
relocated to a farm in
Marlborough.
However, seven peacocks
remain.
The relocation effort
comes after a neighbourly
dispute between Janelle
Wills, who feeds the wild
peacocks, and farmer Sue
Stubevoll, who does not
want them wandering on
to her property.
In February, Ms
Stubenvoll sent a legal
letter to Miss Wills, saying
she had the right to shoot
the peacocks under the
Impounding Act. She gave
Miss Wills four weeks
notice.
Last month, Ms
Stubenvoll arranged for
someone to shoot five
peacocks which were on
her property.
She then skinned,
roasted and ate one of them
for dinner.
Ms Stubenvoll said she
has not decided whether
she will shoot more.
News of the incident
appalled local residents,
with some taking to the
community Facebook
group ‘Lyttelton – Ain’t No
Place I’d Rather Be’ to vent
their anger.
Ms Stubenvoll then
called the police after she
was branded a murderer by
various residents.
She told Bay Harbour
News the culling was to
prevent the peacocks eating
the rare gecko and skink
populations which live on
the farm.
The story featured
on Seven Sharp where
celebrity chef Richard Till
cooked and ate one of the
peacocks.
Miss Wills said she did
not watch it.
She said she was still
losing sleep after five of the
peacocks were shot.
“It is still very stressful
because we don’t want to
wake up to more dead,” she
said.
Miss Wills said she needs
more time to relocate the
remaining seven.
Have your wheelie bins
got their electronic tags?
CHECK your wheelie bins
have been electronically
tagged because those
without will soon stop
being emptied.
For the past three years
Waste Management Ltd
has been carrying out a
stocktake of wheelie bins
for the city council.
As part of the stocktake,
they have been fitting the
wheelie bins allocated to
each property with a radio
frequency identification
tag that emits a short range
signal.
The signal can be picked
up by the kerbside collection
trucks and used
to identify if a bin is on a
property where it does not
belong.
The RFID tags will help
identify lost or stolen bins
and reduce the cost of the
kerbside collection by ensuring
only bins that people
are entitled to, and have
paid for, are being emptied.
“We are nearing the end
of the stocktake, which
means that most wheelie
bins should have been
tagged by now. You can
tell if your bin has been
tagged because it will have
a small reflective sticker on
the side,’’ city council solid
waste manager Ross Trotter
said.
Surveys show more
needs to be done to
fix water and roads
WATER AND the state of roads
are the two major sources of
discontent among the city’s
residents.
The point of contact survey and
the general service satisfaction
survey are two of the measures
the city council uses to gauge its
performance and identify areas
for improvement.
The condition of roads and
footpaths, and the quality of
water, remain a source
of discontent for
people.
“It is clear from
the point of contact
survey results that
residents want
better maintenance
and upkeep of our
community parks,
wharves and jetties
and cemeteries,” chief
executive Karleen
Edwards said.
The general service
satisfaction survey shows 62
per cent of people surveyed are
generally satisfied with the city
council’s performance – up from
55 per cent last year.
In the general service
satisfaction survey, roading
followed by the water supply.
“Before the earthquakes, we
spent about $70 million a year, in
today’s dollars, on maintaining,
renewing and upgrading the
city’s roads and footpaths. In this
current year, we are spending $86
million,” Dr Edwards said.
She said it is also investing in
the water supply.
“Unfortunately we have had to
chlorinate the water
while that work is
done. As a result, we
have seen satisfaction
with the quality of our
water drop from 79 per
cent last year to 37 per
cent,” she said.
“By the end of May,
about 90 per cent of
Christchurch’s water
supply is expected to
be chlorine-free and we
are working to remove
the chlorine from
the remaining water supply as
quickly as possible.”
Can dark family secrets ever truly be buried?
When a horrible twist of fate leaves teenage friends Emma
Kensington and Zane Wolfe reeling in the wake of a fatal
accident, the two are driven apart for decades.
As a professional bull rider in America for the past sixteen years, Zane has stayed
a sensible distance from the one woman he’s always loved but could never have -
Emma, his childhood friend, and his brother’s wife. But a phone call revealing his
stepfather’s sudden death means keeping half a world between them is no longer
an option. Returning to Silvergum, how will he keep his long-held feelings under
control?
For Emma, the death of her father-in-law, Peter, is shadowed by the secrets he’d
been blackmailing her with. She’s finally free to tell the truth to the man she’s
covertly loved from afar all this time. But Peter’s hand stretches beyond the grave,
and all too soon Emma discovers she’s not the only one who has been keeping
secrets. And to make peace with her past, she could very likely lose everything
she loves most...
WORK IN PROGRESS: The removal of the remnant
piles at Naval Point began on Thursday.
Pile removal under way
weather dependent.
The 52 piles have been at Naval
Point since 2000 after the planned
Magazine Bay Marina was
devastated in a storm.
City council capital delivery
community manager Darren
Moses said the project would
cost between $250,000 and
$300,000.
When removed, the piles will
contribute to the LPC’s land
reclamation project where it is
working towards extending the
container terminal by another
6ha on top of the existing 10ha of
reclaimed land.
The city council also
has further plans for the
development of Naval
Point.
“Options are currently
being developed for a plan to
improve the wider area. Public
consultation will be carried out
following the completion of a
Naval Point development plan
for people to give feedback on,”
A VOLUNTARY levy to fund
the Lyttelton Seafarers’ Centre
does not look far away.
The Lyttelton Port Company
is now finalising the operational
details of the levy.
LPC strategic engagement
manager Phil de Joux said the
port company was also doubling
its annual funding towards the
centre to $10,000.
Lyttelton Seafarers’ Centre
Charitable Trust chairman
John McLister saw this as a positive
step forward.
However, he thought more
could be done.
“I don’t see it as a perfect situation
because ideally if you have
a compulsory levy it is going to
deliver all the funding you need.
If you have a voluntary levy
Mr de Joux thought the voluntary
levy would be sufficient.
“At this stage, we are confident
that a voluntary levy will be
successful, as it will be at a
modest level and will help
support services provided
directly to the crews of vessels.”
The centre has had more than
it opened three years ago.
“Ultimately our bottom line
is shipping companies, port
Tantrum to the power of 10
I HAD TWO pretty decent
sleep-ins last week.
I mean I had to travel to
Australia to get them, and
one of those included being
a bit worse for wear. Still, it
was good to get some extra
shut-eye.
However, poor Laura got
stuck inside while I was
away thanks to the nasty
weather. If you remember
back to early April when I
was away in Hamilton she
copped the same.
It must be a curse or
something.
My flight didn’t get in
until 1am on Tuesday
morning, so I only ended
up getting about four hours
sleep before a little smiling
face was pressed close to
mine to get me up.
I was stoked, I had
missed Vittoria heaps while
I was away.
While I was gone she’s
mastered her little pushcar
and worked out how to
turn up the tantrum power
to 10.
With average weather
striking again on Tuesday,
riding her little car up and
down the drive wasn’t a
full-day option.
Laura was on leave so the
three of us packed up the
car and headed to Lyttelton
for a family lunch out.
Bubs behaved like an
DELICIOUS: Vittoria
getting in a quick fluffy
before showing off her
tantrum skills.
angel the whole time.
After eating we went
out onto a deck area to
see the view of the port
when Vittoria spotted an
excellent way to show off
her tantrum skills – some
VITTORIA
& Matt
slippery looking stairs that
had toddler head injury
written all over them.
Not letting her go down
those was cause for a
full-blown meltdown at
me, crying and screaming
right beside some strangers
enjoying a coffee catch-up.
Good thing I’ve
developed a healthy level of
not getting stressed about
what bystanders think.
When I tried to give her
a cuddle to calm her down,
she ran away for a cuddle
from mum instead and her
stroppy attitude lasted all
the way back to the car.
Still, it was nice to see
Vittoria turn to Laura for a
change.
I’m sure, in spite of the
tears and noise, that Laura
would have appreciated that
too.
Bay Harbour News’
coverage of a plan to
open a liquor store in
Redcliffs
Sandy Cassels – It
seems to me the residents
of Redcliffs are being
steam rolled and bullied
into this liquor outlet.
Did the so-called agencies
– police, health and city
council licensing inspector
–front up to the meetings
and hear the residents’
representatives concerns
or just rubber stamp sets of
data given? Because if this
goes ahead, the police will
be very busy with call-outs
and the hospital emergency
department, already
overworked with drug and
alcohol patients, will be
seeing more.
This quiet contemplative
community is a safe place
for the elderly, families
and visitors to come and
enjoy. We need more of
them. Enhance the good
stuff, such as the Coastal
Pathway.
Why introduce a
negative? There is plenty of
evidence during summer in
other harbour bays where
alcohol-infused, antisocial
behaviour happens,
including loud boozeinfused
conversations and
group activities, regardless
of others. And, of course,
litter just left.
Leave Redcliffs alone.
There is the New World in
Redcliffs across the road
from the proposed outlet
for alcohol purchases.
It doesn’t need more. If
people need harder stuff
there are other outlets
close by. Where are the
local politicians and
councillors? Surely their
job is to meet the needs of
the community and not
let booze barons walk over
them. Come on.
Bronwen Summers
– Kia ora. It is time that
communities make their
own decisions about
whether alcohol, fast
food and pokie machine
places are allowed in their
community. The residents’
decision should be final.
Happy birthday station 28
Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson
writes about
the Sumner
Volunteer
Fire Brigade’s
125th
birthday
THE FIRST post-European
recognised voluntary
organisation in New Zealand
was the Women’s Christian
Temperance Union, which was
formed in 1885 – 134 years ago.
Just 11 years later in 1894, the
Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
was established – happy 125th
birthday station 28.
The brigade held its 2019
annual general meeting on its
125th birthday – June 5 – and it
was a fine occasion. As well as
the usual AGM activities, the
brigade and invited guests were
treated to wonderful tales of
previous exploits from United
Fire Brigades Association past
president Alan Cockburn,
including a story about the
late Russ Kerr breaking into
an empty house to get access
to a phone (no cellphones in
those days and the fire truck
communication link was
broken) to call for back up.
This action probably saved
LOCAL LEGENDS: Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade members take a moment to reflect
during their 150th annual general meeting.
many houses in the Moncks
Bay area from the fierce bush
fire that was sweeping down
the hill towards them.
The health and safety rep at
the brigade probably had their
hair standing on end when
they heard the stories of trucks
loaded up with firefighters who
were just hanging on the back
– no seat belts in those days
either.
The brigade has such a rich
history. Its role has evolved
from strictly fighting fires
to attending to medical
emergencies, motor vehicle
accidents, search and rescue,
civil defence and natural
disaster responses. We know
very well the contribution they
made during the earthquakes
and Port Hills fire.
It’s sometimes easy to forget
that the men and women of the
brigade undertake their study,
training and rostered shifts on
top of their day jobs.
It’s a huge commitment to
our community and these
volunteers richly deserve the
thanks and respect of us all.
They are wonderfully
supported by their families and
their employers, without whose
backing it would be impossible
to operate.
Best wishes for the next
Thank you for
helping your
Fall Zones
community
To all of you who have had your
trees trimmed before they became
a problem, thank you for keeping all
the families in your community warm,
happy, healthy and connected.
You can be proud of the fact that you have allowed your
neighbours to stay warm, cook dinner and even charge
their mobile phones. You may not have realised that what
you’ve done has had much impact, but from all of us here
at Orion, we just want to say thank you.
Notice and Growth limit zones
B
A
Power line voltage A. Growth limit zone B. Notice zone
66,000 volts 4.0m 5.0m
33,000 volts 2.5m 3.5m
11,000 volts 1.6m 2.6m
400/230 volts 0.5m 1.5m
We’re not exaggerating.
On our network, 10-20% of all unplanned power outages are
caused by trees — including vegetation — coming into contact
with power lines. Other than this, fire damage to property from
branches sparking in dry conditions and serious injury from
electrocution from contact with trees touching power lines are
also possible consequences of not maintaining your trees.
How close is too close?
While most damage is caused by trees falling on power lines,
significant risk exists from trees merely touching them. This risk
increases the higher the voltage of the power line.
The minimum distances that must be maintained between trees
and power lines, as defined in the Electricity (Hazards from
Trees) Regulations 2003, are outlined in the diagrams above.
All vegetation should be kept out of the growth limit zone and
preferably the notice zone.
Sometimes it may not be practical to have a tree trimmed at the
rate at which it grows and unfortunately, this means it may need
to be removed. Other situations may require trees to be removed,
most commonly when they are at a high risk of falling due to
disease or adverse weather events.
Where do I start?
Before you begin, remember to keep yourself, and those around
you, safe. We recognise that not everyone is experienced in tree
trimming and are happy to advise you on what to do. We can arrange
for trees near power lines to be trimmed at your expense, however
we recommend you hire professionals to safely carry out the work.
If you or someone working for you intends to work within four
metres of power lines, a close approach consent is required from
Orion before you start. As a tree owner, you may be liable for any
damage caused by carrying out trimming or felling of trees.
Will I be fined if I don’t comply?
If a cut or trim notice is given to you and you fail to have the tree
trimmed and/or advise us of the time and location of the trim
without a reasonable excuse, this is an offence. This will make you
liable for a fine not exceeding $10,000. If the offence continues,
you will be liable for a further fine of not more than $500 for every
day or part day during which the offence continues.
More info can be found on our website and if
you have any questions or notice any trees
touching power lines in your area, please call
us on 03 363 9898 or 0800 363 9898.
BATTLING: Sumner’s scrum continued to dominate this season by winning a penalty try during their 27-20 victory over HSOB. Josh Loader is congratulated for
scoring after charging down a kick.
Scrum pivotal to Sumner’s success
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER FINISHED an
otherwise ordinary first phase
of the metro premier rugby
competition in style with a 27-20
win over High School Old Boys.
The result saw Sumner finish
the opening round-robin with
four wins and seven losses. The
win over HSOB now means
they will enter the bottom six
competition with momentum.
Coach Martin Dodgson was
full of praise for assistant Gareth
D’Almeida, who came up with
the team’s game plan to nullify
HSOB’s playmakers.
“We knew we just had to make
it a mess out of the breakdowns
and be quite narrow in defence
. . . the wind also helped, it was a
cross wind, so trying to move the
ball from one side to the other
against the wind was near on
impossible,” said Dodgson.
“Mentally we were right on
song and then the scrum just laid
the most ridiculous platform.”
SPORT
Sumner’s dominance at
scrum time was evident with
a penalty try after winning a
scrum penalty 7m out from the
HSOB line.
Earlier on, halfback Hayden
O’Donnell opened the scoring
for Sumner with a try. The match
was all but wrapped up with
10min remaining when lock Josh
Loader charged down Fletcher-
Smith just inside his own 22m
line, before running onto collect
the ball on a difficult bounce and
cross the line.
Following the restart, HSOB
scored a late consolation try to
make the final score 27-20.
Sumner’s backline will receive
a boost this week with the
addition of a number of players.
English half-back James Elliot
was impressive in the division
two side’s 10-66 loss to HSOB on
Saturday. He is expected to make
his debut for the premier team
this weekend.
Meanwhile, outside back Poasa
Cama saw his first action of the
year when he played 40min at
fullback for the division two side
after returning from a serious
knee injury.
On Saturday, Sumner will host
Belfast at St Leonards Square
in their first bottom six match.
Kick-off is at 2.45pm.

Colorado makes easy work of cross trainer
Motoring
Ross Kiddie
YOU’D THINK after writing
about cars for
30 years there would be
few things in a motor vehicle
that would get the better of me in
terms of technology.
There’s nothing more
embarrassing than having to go
back to a dealership admitting
defeat and asking how something
works.
Well, that happened to me with
Holden’s latest Z71 Colorado,
quite simply I couldn’t get the
deck cover off. The friendly sales
staff at Blackwells quickly showed
me how it was done, and I was on
my way.
I was quite anxious to
have access to the deck area
as my wife’s cross trainer
needed workshop repair, and
transporting it on the back of a
ute was the most sensible option.
I also used it to take a load of
green waste to the recycling
centre.
Quite obviously, these tasks
were no match for the Colorado’s
1000kg load capacity, but they
did serve to prove how adaptable
the modern ute has become,
and if you add in a 3500kg tow
rating the Colorado is right up
there in terms of load carrying
performance.
However, as much as it is a
standout in terms of practicality,
the Z71 four-wheel-drive double
cab is aimed more towards the
recreational buyer, it has decals,
stripes, body kit and a high level
of specification, full leather trim
is some indication as to how it sits
in the market.
There are also many unseen
specification elements, the
Colorado is state of the art in
terms of electronic inclusions
for safety, while comfort and
convenience items are generous.
It is very modern in the cockpit,
while seating comfort for five is
guaranteed.
Under the bonnet sits a
2.8-litre, four-cylinder twincamshaft
turbocharged diesel
engine. It is rated by Holden
at 147kW, and with 500Nm of
torque available at just 2000rpm
it is a powerhouse, easily on a par
with all of its competitors.
Drive is harnessed through a
six-speed automatic transmission.
A manual is available, but it won’t
compete with the auto in terms of
sales figures. Bear in mind, too,
the manual has a lower engine
torque figure of 440Nm.
Shifts in the auto are smooth,
HOLDEN COLORADO Z71: Versatile, go-anywhere double cab
ute.
and the gearing is such that it
provides relaxed motoring at
highway speed, along with the
ratios needed for slow speed, offthe-seal
travel.
Backing up that theory is
the fitment of a true low ratio
transfer box, it is manipulated
electronically by a consolemounted
dial switch at the
driver’s command.
Because I was travelling alone I
didn’t take the
Z71 off-road, instead, I spent
most of my time
with the Z71 at highway speed
and my regular commute. In
those conditions it seems more
car-like than ute-like.
Sure, at well over 5m there is a
lot of bulk to manoeuvre in close
confine situations, but it’s no
worse than any other vehicle of
its type. If you take into account
the numbers that are being sold,
buyers quite obviously don’t rate
that as a challenge.
On the open road, the engine
turns over slowly at 1550rpm
at 100km/h in top gear. At that
speed it returns a 6.2-litre per
100km (46mpg) instantaneous
fuel usage figure and that
accounted for a 9.4l/100km
(30mpg) average figure during
my time with the ute.
That correlates well
with the 8.7l/100km (32mpg)
figure Holden claims for a
combined cycle average.
Road and wind noise are both
kept to a minimum, and the
Colorado as a series imparts
a smooth ride. Of course, it is
better with a bit of weight in the
back, but the reality is the load
bearing suspension is relatively
absorbent and the cab doesn’t
• Price – Holden Colorado
Z71, $66,900
• Dimensions – Length,
5361mm; width, 1872mm;
height, 1800mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2776cc, 147kW, 500Nm,
six-speed automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 11sec
• Fuel usage – 8.7l/100km
jiggle unnecessarily on uneven
surfaces.
That’s an area where
local research and development
pays dividends. Holden Australia
places a huge emphasis on
developing vehicles for down
under conditions, and
it certainly shows in Colorado.
The ride is acceptable, while and
the entire in-cabin experience is
comfortable.
I guess it would need to be
welcoming. The Z71 listing at
$66,990 is a bit of an outlay, but
if you get to the dealership before
the end of June you will be in line
for a tempting Feildays bargain,
and with the amount of on-board
kit it would be a very worthy
purchase.
Even though the
Z71’s flashy bits disguise
its traditional ute look, make
no mistake, the Z71 is still the
quintessential Colorado which
has carved out a huge reputation
as a tough, go-anywhere worker.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
Action looms
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
The preparation for this year’s
Mr Garth, who has b en a
competition brought back his
“Doing a l thi stuff and
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
“You can just about guarant e
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
“I’d like to think so because the
city council has had their eyes
Mr Mora said the community
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, recently
came second a the World
Ireland.
It was the firs time Mr Garth
had competed in the cha lenge
and he was “rea ly proud” of
how the team performed.
“We produced some top quality
products and came away
with a g od result so we’re very
ha py,” he said.
The preparation for this year’s
World Butchers’ Cha lenge was
intense as the team members
met in Auckland every two
months for lengthy w ekend
practices.
Mr Garth, who has b en a
butcher for 14 years, said the
competition brought back his
passion for the job.
“Doing a l thi stuff and
m eting new people, s eing new
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
butcher shop of his own someday
but says for now he wi l focus
on ge ting mor experience
and on the 2020 cha lenge.
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
going back to try and win the
A CRACKDOWN on mobile
traders acro s the districts could
be l oming.
However, the public has li tle
interest in having input into the
i sue.
Only eight submi sions were
received for a potential bylaw
aimed at regulating commercial
activities in public places.
The district council wi l be
holding a hearing for the Public
Places Bylaw and Policy on Commercial
Activities and Events in
Public Places.
A hearing i scheduled to be
held on Thursday.
The bylaw comes as an increasing
number of mobile traders
are s eking to operate in Selwyn,
especia ly during the summer
months.
In the past year, the district
council has received five inquiries
about se ting up a mobile busine s
on private or public land.
A report said there are two
str et operators in Darfield, a
coff e cart is parked beside the
railway in Ro leston, and a pi za
cart visits Lincoln w ekly betw en
The New Zealand Mounted
Mark A pleton and member
Mike Donaldson t ok their
horses to the sch ol on Monday,
in a bid to educate pupils on the
sacrifice their ancestors made in
World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
their horses Tommy and Kruze
wore 1 0-year-old sa dles donated
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
te l” to make them aware of what
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
wear in the war.
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
since the age of 19.
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
plan.
“You can just about guarant e
it . because we [the community
board] don’t believe qua ries
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
board’ submi sion.
“I’d like to think so because the
city council has had their eyes
the crysta line silica risk,” he said.
Mr Mora said the community
board wi l be “representing and
