Lancaster Park
plan takes
another step
• By Julia Evans
THE OUTCOME of discussions
over the future use of Lancaster
Park will be revealed next week.
The quake-damaged stadium
is being pulled down, with
demolition work scheduled to be
completed later this year.
City council staff have been
discussing the future of the park
with Ngāi Tahu, the Crown, the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board and other
key stakeholders, such as the
Charleston Neighbourhood
Association, Woolston
Community Association, XCHC,
Phillipstown Community Hub
and the Christchurch Youth
Council.
The feedback from these
meetings will be presented to
the community board at its next
meeting on June 17. The plan is
for the park to be used for sport
as there is a shortage of parks in
the communities neighbouring
Lancaster Park.
However, the city council is
asking the community what
attributes it wants to see in the
park. Sports clubs which have
been involved are the Lancaster
Park Cricket Club, Cashmere
Technical Football Club and
Sydenham and Otautahi rugby
clubs.
Church restoration funding nears end
• By Georgia O’Connor-
A LONG battle to fund the
restoration of one of the city’s
most historic churches is now on
the “home straight.”
For nearly eight years,
volunteers have been fundraising
to restore the St Peter’s Anglican
Church.
The Upper Riccarton church,
which was consecrated in 1858,
was damaged in the February
22, 2011, earthquake.
The hard work has paid off
with $2.1 million raised by
the church. Restoration work
started in April.
Parish reverend Nick
Mountfort said he is very
excited but still needs to find an
additional $400,000 to cover the
costs.
The main work for the restoration
of the church located on
Yaldhurst Rd is strengthening
the ceilings and walls.
Rev Mountfort said steel beams
will be run under the building to
strengthen it along with bracing
in the ceiling and walls.
“In the event of an earthquake,
nobody will be in danger in that
building. Which is reassuring because
stone buildings in Christchurch
are a bit scary,” he said.
The original architecture of
the church will be maintained
while the north and south transept
will be extended to allow for
more amenities that were not in
the old building.
The church has a number of
fundraising efforts planned with
a garage sale in September and a
ball next year.
It is also running a living stone
fundraiser where members of
the community can sponsor a
living stone from the church for
$500 or a block for $1000 and
their names will be listed on the
walls of the restoration.
Rev Mountfort said it is continuing
to apply to trusts and
charities around the world for
the final funding needed.
He said people with links to
the church and community
members have been very generous
with helping the church
raise $2.1 million so far.
The city council granted
$150,000 from its capital
endowment fund in 2017 for the
cause. It is estimated the church
will be restored by August 2020.
of the community in restoring
the church.
“I feel very privileged to be
able to be of help to St Peter’s
