The future is bright for Shirley Intermediate
School! With major property developments
in the near future, and Banks Avenue School
moving right next door to us (in 2021), we’re
really excited.
A key part of Shirley Intermediate School’s vision
is to help children grow up to have “full and
satisfying lives”. These two qualities are rich
in interpretation and potential impact for our
pupils and families.
Children need academic achievement -
that’s without question - but they also
need connection/love, and high levels of
curiosity, motivation, self management and
relationship skills.
Employers consistently report that - besides
capability to do a job - they want people who
know how to interact and connect well with
others. This includes being able to cope with
stress and adversity. Wellbeing has certainly
been highlighted in Christchurch in recent years.
At Shirley Intermediate
School your child’s
sense of identity and
their connection
to others is
acknowledged and
valued. Teachers
seek to make learning
relevant to children and
to build connections to
children’s lives.
We have two public functions coming up and
you’re invited to both of them.
• Duane Major - “Core Matters - Know Local,
Go Local” 7pm Tuesday 2 July, Shirley
Intermediate School Hall.
• SIS Open Night 6.30-8pm Thursday 2 August
Shirley District Music
School.
For over 45 years, the
Shirley District Music
School (SDMS) has
lived out its mission:
To provide quality,
affordable music
tuition for the children
of the Shirley Area.
Subsidised by the
Ministry of Education,
SDMS provides what
is possibly the most
affordable tuition in
Christchurch.
Hundreds, indeed thousands of children from
the local schools have been introduced to the
joy of playing music. The schools are: Shirley
Intermediate, Shirley Primary, Banks Ave Primary,
Waitakiri Primary, Mairehau Primary Marshlands
PrimarySt Francis Assisi
As the home of SDMS, Shirley Intermediate School
hosts the administration, and all the performance
events.
subsidised hire fee.
Students are given a 15 minute individual lesson
or 30 minute group lesson each week. While most
lessons are held after school at Shirley Intermediate
some lessons may occur during school time at the
child’s school when this fits well with all parties.
Orchestra and Band - A highlight for many
musicians, SDMS provides group performance
opportunities for children.
A new Music Theory class for year 5-8 pupils has
proved very popular since being offered (free of
charge) this year.
SIS has further subsidies available by application to
the Principal.
With winter amongst us our student leaders were to the fore last year, helping
the Shirley Village Project provide firewood for families in need.
You know about the beach, ,
but did you hear about the
local school?
In 2016 Duane (left) and Adam sparked a successful
campaign to buy Awaroa Beach for the people of Aotearoa.
Back home, Duane turned his hand to his local school.
The story is inspiring
You're invited...
... Duane will share how the Know Local, Go Local attitude of a few local
families lead to growth in their school and a significant lift in community
wellbeing.
Presenters include the dynamic Duane Major
Christchurch City Councillors Pauline Cotter and Glenn Livingstone
Heating and Baking provided!
Bilingual Class - “Te Tahu Rua Reo”
Te Tahu Rua Reo is our bilingual class option in
which the children have 50 - 80 percent of the
teaching delivered in Te Reo Maori.
The Te Tahu Rua Reo unit was established in
2003 in response to requests from St Albans
School to provide learning in Te Reo for the tauira
graduating from their bilingual class after Year Six.
Te Tahu Rua Reo now provides bilingual
education for children who enrol from the much
wider community. Children do not have to have
had a background in Te Reo; It is more important
that the child wants to learn Te Reo and that the
family is supportive.
Anchored by the children from Te Tahu Rua Reo, but drawing from throughout
our school, our 2018 kapa haka group performed exceptionally well and were
selected for the national competitions in 2019.
