GIG OF THE MONTH:
DISCHARGE
Seminal hardcore punk outfit Discharge smashed
onto the scene in the late 70s with a revolutionary
sound. Founded by Terry “Tezz” Roberts and
Roy “Rainy” Wainwright, their characteristic
‘high-speed noise overload’ was radical and has
been attributed with paving the way for a whole
bunch of more extreme metal subgenres, such as
thrash metal, black metal, crust punk and grindcore.
Their politically driven lyrics coupled with
the raw, harsh ‘wall of sound’, frantic, crashing
drumbeat and often lack of melody, set them apart
from the punk that preceded them and they most
certainly influenced big-name bands like Metallica,
Anthrax, Machine Head and Sepultura, all of
whom have covered Discharge songs.
