I’ve seen one or two over the years. A key indicator that something is about to happen is the thief leaves the car idling while he or see is filling up. Usually, it’s a passenger filling up, for a quick getaway. And almost always the forecourt is busy so staff in the shop are either distracted or have multiple things going on. But now a relatively new development in the drive-off story. Thieves are stealing number plates, and attaching them to their cars to make it even harder to be caught. But police don’t appear to be following up on the issue. THe Hornby Community Patrol receives weekly statistics which shows on average about five to 10 number plates are stolen across the city each week. “I noticed like last week there were nine sets of number plates stolen … I feel nobody talks about it,” patrol chairman Ken Chamberlain said. It is believed number plates are stolen to disguise vehicles when crimes are committed – mainly for petrol drive-offs and burglaries. Superintendent Lane Todd said number plates are routinely stolen for petrol drive-offs. Drive-off incidents escalate when fuel prices rise. He said police take reports but it does have to prioritise with more serious offending. “If there is a vehicle identified and has stolen registration plates there are limited inquiries we can do unless we see good footage of the offending person on the forecourt,” he said. BP 2go Halswell site manager Josh Nelson said it hasn’t been happy with the police response for a long time. He said each incident of stolen fuel is reported to police, a letter is sent to the owner of the plate and the footage is downloaded and saved. Mr Nelson said the company has an agreement with the New Zealand Transport Agency which will provide registration details and the address of the plate’s owner. “Our hope is if we keep reporting them, they (police) realise it is a problem. When they have the resources they will throw more at it,” Mr Nelson said. It has had 20 incidents of stolen fuel in the past two months – four of the recorded incidents involved false number plates. It is why the Hornby Community Patrol runs fundraisers at BP 2go Halswell which involves refitting number plates with “anti-theft” screws. Rob Jack, who owns four Mike Mora Mobil stations across the city, including Mobil Creyke Rd in Ilam said: “If we leave it in the hands of the police, not much gets done.” He said he is not encouraged to call police every time fuel is stolen because it doesn’t often get results, which is why the company follows up itself. “THat involves me going to houses, knocking on doors, letters, all that kind of stuff which can be a little sketchy at times but it is the only way it can be done,” he said. Mobil Creyke Rd has had about 10 petrol drive-offs since the beginning of the year. In May, Halswell-Hornby- Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora had his number plate stolen in broad daylight while he was at a meeting at the Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre. Mr Mora reported the incident to police but has not heard back. “It is not the end of the world, it is just frustrating. The school’s head girl Shardey Harris received the Young Totara Award while Nicole Sowman, the school’s librarian and learning commons supervisor, was recognised with the Pride of Workmanship award. The awards have been run by the Hornby Rotary Club for more than 20 years now, with the aim of celebrating the outstanding work in the community. $5000 FOR HALSWELL HALL The Halswell Hall has received $5000 towards replacing its original clay drainage pipes. The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board approved the grant at its meeting on Tuesday. Another grant of $5000 was approved from the 2018-2019 Discretionary Response Fund to go to Wigram School so it could establish a school garden. 55 GRANT APPLICATIONS The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will consider applications made to the 2019-20 Strengthening Communities Fund on August 13.
