Local Realtor & Mold Remediator Help Family Enjoy
Their Home Instead of Sacrificing their Health
by Laura Bush Jenkins
“The house was exactly what the buyer wanted,” recalls
realtor Charlie Newsome, reflecting back to a track-stopping
encounter a few year ago.
The three-story, furnished waterfront home in a prominent
Currituck community was a dream come true,
except for one major obstacle. The owner was unable to
sell the house because everything was covered in mold.
“It smelled like a fruit stand, and a few leaks caused
additional heartburn.”
The buyers persisted, however, and soon the house was
under contract. They were willing to find a solution, but
Newsome was skeptical.
“I knew Harry [Cannon, of Dwelling Management
Solutions] prior to this, but was not a believer in mold
remediation,” he stated.
an independent tester, who verified and quantified a
significant presence of penicillium. The team at Dwelling
Management Solutions addressed the issue promptly
and removed it before closing.
“I don’t know how Dwelling Management Solutions salvaged
everything,” said Newsome. “It was a big place,
with an elevator. However, the amount spent on remediation
was nothing compared to the big picture.”
Dwelling Management Solutions specializes in residential
and commercial mold removal and is a member
of the Indoor Air Quality Association. It utilizes only
professional-grade Mold Defender products specifically
formulated for remediation.
Owner Harry Cannon is a patent holder with 20 years
experience educating and protecting the public from the
damaging effects of mold in our area.
“Local realtors are talking about the results Dwelling
Management Solutions is creating as they safely eliminate
mold from buildings. “
Like many, Newsome thought spraying affected areas
with bleach would provide a solution. However, unknown
to most, bleach does not kill or remove mold. It’s
simply masks the discoloration (see epa.gov/mold.)
What saved the day was collecting measurements from
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
My life’s mission and passion is about mitigating
cancer, and its effects. When I hear terms like, “I’m
fighting cancer”, and I’m cancer-free, I’ve wondered what
it means? A few years ago, when I facilitated a “Man to
Man” prostate cancer support group we often discussed
those subjects to develop strategy’s.. It was always
inconclusive. Here’s my take.
Fifteen years ago when I was diagnosed, my cancer
mentor and brother Mel, helped me to understand that
the best strategy to fight cancer was NOT to cede your
control of your health. The group agreed and added that
your medical advisers or team are your hirees..You’re
buying their services, they’re providing you with their
expertise and options, You are the decider.
The support group also thought it imperative to have
a Comprehensive Treatment Center’s opinion as part
of your decision making process, either as your primary
source of information, or for a second opinion. Comprehensive
cancer treatment centers (there are 70 in the
U.S.). They are the best providers to determine the most
effective strategy for you. That might be radiation, chemical,
hormonal, immune or watch and wait observation,
their opinion will inform your local provider.
I chose John’s Hopkins (Sidney Kimmel Clinic) for my
cancer team, because of their propensity toward a
dietary-link based strategy, and their easy commute. I
tested their dietary assertion by participating in a phase
one and two clinical trial testing muscadine grape skin
capsules. It controlled my cancer for over two years.
I’m convinced. Cancer cells are tricky, their strategy is
to mutate and adjust. Your challenge is to counter that
adjustment with your own adjustment. My strategy to defeat
their adjustment is by using food.. To me that means
strengthening your immune system. Strengthening your
immune system means strengthening your diet.
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
Warren Green can be reached
at warreng9241@hotmail.com
As far as ‘the term “cancer-free”, I’ve never been an
advocate or understood how the term got into use. It’s a
misnomer. A surgeon might say he removed a lesion or
tumor and announce “I got it all”.
Cancer cells are microscopic. So you got microscopic
maverick cells in your bloodstream looking for weaknesses
and ways to evade your immune system. In our toxic,
carcinogen laden environment, everyone has cancer cells
at some level. Nobody is cancer free,it’s just non-detectable.
Next month I’ll be 80 years, and I’ll be developing strategies
for the next 3 years. I’m beginning an adventure
in a 62 and older community (Overture,VB) . My new
neighborhood provides enough food options to optimize
my diet, to levels I’ve never approached. I have access to
products like impossible (vegan) burgers, and nondairy
cheese. I’m thinking about alternating a modified Mediterranean
with a vegetarian diet, and monitor my blood
work which I do quarterly. Medicare and a supplement
will cover the cost.
Finally, I thought I should recognize “The Green Bronx
Machine” as a top ten Health and Wellness program in
the country. These are inner city kids growing food and
exporting their expertise all over the world.
Food, must be focused on to mitigate the effects of our
increasingly polluted environment.
Before we get into that, I wanted to give a shout out to my
cancer mentor, and brother Mel who helped me formulate
strategies and perspectives to manage my cancer. .
As far as “cancer free” is concerned, I’ve never been an
advocate or understood the terminology.
Watercress -The Nose Twister
by: Coy Domecq
The watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is found throughout
the United States growing in shallow moving fresh
water. The aquatic watercress was introduced to the
US from Europe and Asia. Before we get too far, please
do not be misled by the genus category of this plant
with the land-based flower by the same common name
nasturtium. The flower was named after the aquatic plant
because of the similarity in botanical oils both plants
produce.
Watercress has the distinction of being one of the oldest
known leaf vegetables consumed by humans. It was a
staple food for Roman soldiers and Hippocrates, known
as the father of medicine, used the plant to treat patients
for a range of medical conditions.
“Midway have it your way with prestige,
trustworthy repair from bumper to bumper."
“We can do any Auto Repair”
$54.95 for a synthetic oil change
$34.95 for a regular oil change
The nutritional benefits of watercress are significant and
many. It is a member of the cruciferous family that enjoys
such better-known healthful members as cabbage, broccoli
and kale. One cup of watercress contains more than
one hundred percent of the USRDA of vitamin K. The
plant is superior to spinach for dietary iron it provides. It is
noteworthy for the levels of vitamins A and C it contains,
the beneficial effect of lowering blood pressure, and it
demonstrates a positive role of minimizing the side effects
of cancer treatments.
Uncooked watercress has a distinct peppery taste that
adds culinary interest to salads and soups as a garnish.
Roughly translated, nasturtium means “nose twister”. It
once enjoyed great favor as part of the working person’s
diet and then migrated to the tea party crowd in the form
of watercress sandwiches. When cooked, it is a versatile
ingredient that is featured in soup, pesto, pizza, deviled
eggs, and as a lettuce substitute in BLTs or your favorite
wrap.
“Desperation is the raw
material of drastic change.
Only those who can leave
behind everything they
have ever believed in can
hope to escape. ”
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
Home Owners Insurance- TERMINOLOGY- Part two
Last month, I wrote on the wording in Home owners policys
so folks could understand what they are paying for and what
their coverage means in lay mans language.. This month I am
focusing on Parts B,C,D,E, and F..As I stated last month, Part
A is on the dwelling itself.. Now part B is on all buildings NOT
ATTACHED to the house.. be it a work shed, garage or any
kind off outbuilding.. ALL POLICIES gives you 10% of the value
of your home in part A as coverage for thisdd type of building..
So if your house is valued at $ 200,000 on part A, those out
buildings are covered dup to $20,000 loss.
Now, if your building is valued more than that, you can ask
your agent to increase the coverage, but it will costs a little
more.. Now Part C is PERSONAL PROPERTY.. This is all your
furniture, jewelry, sporting equipment, clothes.. anything you
own or are paying for.. in your house, the out buildings, in our
car, OR what you have loaned out to someone even it is THEIR
HOUSE!! The company automatically gives you 50% coverage
for the value of this property ( IT IS UP TO YOU TO PROVE
THE VALUE, SO KEEP RECEIPTS OF ALL MAJOR BUYS
AND TAKE PICTURES OFF ALL ITEMS AND RECORD THE
SERIAL NUMBERS OF ALL ITEMS) . If you do not, you will not
get value you wish!! Also, with the 50% plan they give you, the
company will take off depreciation, so if a TV cost you $ 3000
five years ago, yu may only get $1000 or so as pay back.. In order
to get FULL VALUE you must increase the value from 50 %
to 70%, which is called REPLACEMENT COSTS.. talk to your
agent for more info or call me..Next is PART D, or LOSS OF
USE.. Say you have a fire in the bedroom and have to spend
3 weeks in a motel to sleep, this part gives you up to 20% of
Part A, for money to pay for the rental.. also, if your kitchen is
destroyed and you have to eat at Hardee’s or Circle Restaurant,
keep your receipts, and you can get reimbursed for this..This
ends SECTION ONE OF ALL HOMEOWNERS POLICIES..
Section 2, I will cover next month in August..As usual, you may
contact me for this or other insurance issues.. Call me at 252
202 5983 or 252 335 5983 or e-mail me at INSDR@ROAD-
RUNNER.COM..Tip of the month.. Do not get to wrapped up in
politics right now and do not believe all the blustering you hear
from all the candidates, this is where all the hot air is coming
from now from Washington D.C. Just relax, there is plenty of
time to get your tickets to leave for Canada or Mars or Outer
Mongolia in the coming 16 months.. TATA,
f you are here vacationing on the Outer Banks and you
need to have a day trip away from the ocean, then consider
a trip to Wanchese. Just drive to Wanchese and look for the
sign that reads Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park. Once in the
park, you will be at the hub of the seafood and boat building
industry. You will pass by Bayliss Boatworks where some of the
finest sportfishing boats are built by legendary fishing Captain
John Bayliss. Next is O’Neals Seafood where, if you are here
at lunchtime, you can grab an excellent seafood lunch and also
buy some fresh North Carolina seafood to take back to cook
at your cottage. O’Neals is a popular locals’ spot as well as
for those visiting our area. The specials of the day are sure to
satisfy your seafood craving and are made with fresh locally
caught seafood..
When you are done there, then continue around the park and
when you make the right turn you will see the Outer Banks
Marina, “Home of Wicked Tuna Outer Banks”. If you are here
in the late afternoon, there are many things to do at the OBX
Marina. First you can watch as the boats come in from a day
on the ocean and will be unloading their catches on the dock.
You can watch as the Doghouse from Wicked Tuna backs in
and meet Captain Britton Shackelford. If you like Wicked Tuna,
you can head over to the OBX Marina Ship Store and get an
official OBX Marina Wicked Tuna T-Shirt. While you are in the
Ship Store, you can also check for boat availability and plan a
charter fishing trip while you are here visiting.
“Hustlers of the world, there is one
mark you cannot beat: the mark inside.”
― William S. Burroughs
For the adult vacationer, you can visit the Tiki Bar located dockside
and grab a cold one and mix with the locals at this popular
watering hole. If you pick the right evening the bar also has live
music. Located beside the Tiki Hut is the Sooey’s BBQ Food
Trailer where you can get some BBQ to compliment your cold
beer. For those looking for a family trip, OBX Marina now has
Paradise Dolphin Cruises on the Kokomo. If you want to take
this Dolphin cruise, then make sure you call ahead and make
a reservation because cruises sell out fast during the summer.
As you can see, there is a lot happening at the OBX Marina. If
you do happen to book a trip with one of the many experienced
captains who are located at OBX Marina, the marina also has a
fish cleaning service where they will clean and bag your catch
of the day. Then you can take it back to your cottage to eat or
take it back home with you.
Who knows? While you are visiting, you may even see me
when I am returning to OBX Marina after a day on the ocean!
This is where I dock my boat “The Sea Donkey.” If you see me,
stop by and say hi. Enjoy your stay on the Outer Banks!
Dear Dr. Crime
Dr. Crime is a pseudonym for a social scientist holding
a Ph.D. degree in sociology and in criminology. He
has worked in all major parts of the criminal justice
system. Drop him a note at the website www.keepkidshome.net
If you or your child is in trouble, he
may be able to help, give him a call (2523390000) or
E-mail at
reedadams@yahoo.com
Dear Dr. Crime: You said suicide by kids was bad. Is it
really? What are the numbers?
Dear Reader. The CDC’s National Center for Health
Statistics reports a 33% increase since 1999. That
shows the highest age-adjusted suicide rate recorded in
the U.S. since 1942. And kid suicide horrifies me most.
It is increasing more rapidly among boys and girls ages
10 to 14 than in any other age group. Research reported
in the Journal of the American Medical Association
indicated kids killing themselves is at the highest point
since at least 2000. See the June issue of the JAMA.
The researchers indicate that high rates of drug abuse
and overdose, and misuse of social media may be tied
to rising suicide rates. If you need to act about possible
suicide call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at
1-800-273-8255 or text HOME to 741741 to reach the
Crisis Text Line.
Dear Dr. Crime: What do we do to end the opioid crisis?
Disturbed voter.
Dear Voter: Tell your state and federal officials to make
it more of a priority. The Monitor on Psychology reports
that in 2017 our country was home to 1.7 million opioids
disorder victims and 6 times as many died from opioids
as in 1999. It also reports that a relatively new criminological
treatment tool, the “Drug Courts” are proving to
be very effective by a focus on treatments as well as incarceration.
We now have over 3,000 drug courts. We
also have “Mental Health Courts” using mental health
services as part of sentencing.
Dear Dr. Crime: What agencies can help me develop an
anti-bullying program at our local high school? I don’t
know where to turn. Politically Active Citizen.
Dear PAC: GOOD for you ! Encourage others to participate
in local government as you are doing. For help
with your planning go to the National Association of Forensic
Counselors. They have developed “tool kits” for
bullying and have an app for you. See that really great
association at nafc@forensiccounselor.org. See also
their upcoming meeting on the motivation of survivors of
human trafficking.
Dear Dr. Crime: What can we do to help our FireFighters?
I think they don’t get the support and attention they
deserve. HotPants
Dear HotPants: You are right on target. We must do
more for our first responders. How about a transfer
of all politicians and media personnel salaries to the
FireFighters? No, I guess that would not work, but
there is much we can do beyond what is now the typical
program. See the programs Dr. Jana Tran, a psychologist
with the Houston Fire Department, has going. Her
research shows that FireFighters can develop depression
and PTSD, leading to suicide. She has a video,
Operation Lifeline, that is an important part of preparing
them for the stress of their work. Go for it!! See the
June issue of Monitor on Psychology.
Dear Dr. Crime: Can we do anything to get girls out of
the sex business? I think the beginning of the Artificial
Intelligence Dolls is one way. Regretful Customer
Dear RC: The vast majority of working girls enter the
profession because they have few economic options.
Also, they generally do not live in a social system that
supports them. The NoVo Foundation is working on
this problem. Recently a number of news sources ran
stories about the development of robots that pass for
humans. The development of artificial intelligence in
multiple forms should be watched, as it has many implications
for science and humanity.
Dear Dr. Crime: Kids today cannot delay gratification of
any sort. That is the reason for the increased crime rate.
Old Fashioned Father.
Dear OFF : I disagree. A study in Developmental Psychology
and in Science News found that white, middle
class kids empirically tested for patience showed a powerful
increase since 2000. The researchers contributed
the increase in delaying gratification to increases in abilities
to think abstractly, pay attention, plan and prioritize.
We owe a massive debt to the pre-school teachers. This
is another example of the importance of early education.
“I don’t care if people hate my guts; I
assume most of them do. The important
question is whether they are in a
position to do anything about it.”
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
After the Chowanoke Reservation was gone, tribal members began
to disperse and establish smaller communities within the local
area. These “mini” communities were distinct and were recognized
as unique by those who lived outside of the community. The Indians
who lived in these communities could no longer consider themselves
a tribe in the same sense that we know today, but continued
to function as tribal communities had in the past with a semblance of
self-government, both politically and socially. Many of these communities
established a school and church within their own community or
attended one that was nearby in a similar community. In reality, these
“unique” communities were the norm and a continuance of that which
had always existed prior to colonization. This time however, they had
adapted to a modern lifestyle and society. Longhouses no longer existed
and communal living had ceased.
As Indian customs assimilated into the local culture, Europeans adopted
many survival practices they had learned from the Chowanoke.
Fishing technique, local farming, and food recipes were taught. In turn,
housing and a European clothing style were adopted by the Chowanoke.
However, the Indians who lived in these communities did not
dismantle their social culture and individuality. Even today, a semblance
of their past remains. While local society recognized Chowanoke
as different, overall they have had a difficult time accepting them
as Indian, without “teepees” and regalia. Within the northeastern North
Carolina environment, there are few exceptions where Indians were
racially designated as Indian in the early 1900’s. This was unfortunate
because it undermined the existence of a culture that provided a
foundation for the society that exists today. Yet, even in the aftermath
of a racially charged environment against American Indians, there still
exists core communities that have retained their Chowanoke identity.
Duvonya, a Chowanoke
descendant, is President of
Roanoke-Chowan Native
American Association, a
non-profit organization whose
mission is to help American
Indians in Northeastern NC
Chowanoke descendant, she
is currently developing the
Paddling Pleasures
by Claude Milot
The Albemarle Sound is a paradise for boaters. The
sails and masts of sloops, cutters, yawls, and ketches
can be seen throughout the year as sailors eagerly
explore the vast expanse of the Sound or compete in
weekly races and annual regattas. Powerboats of all
sizes and shapes also make their way to the towns
along the Sound to discover the many riches they have
to offer.
But these waters make another kind of discovery possible.
Not so much the open waters of the Sound, but the
rivers that feed it and the many creeks that can only be
explored with small boats.
One group of boaters dedicated to the exploration of
the area’s creeks and ponds are the kayakers of Albemarle
Plantation’s Osprey Yacht Club. When the green
of spring replaces nature’s winter coat, these intrepid
explorers can be seen piling their kayaks onto trailers
and truck roofs and heading for a new or sometimes
familiar destination.
Close to home, the OYC paddlers return again and
again to Yeopim Creek and its narrow tributaries. A
paddler exploring Frank’s Creek describes* the waters
as ranging from emerald green to jet-black pools under
the trees. The air cool, with very little wind. Birdcalls
heard overhead, the loud hoot of an owl, honking geese,
a crane passing silently overhead. A large group of
cormorants bobbing along, their long necks like sticks
above the surface, suddenly rise from the water, the
The Raymon’s Creek Property Owners’ Association
(RCPOA) is a fully functional neighborhood association,
governed by individuals who live in Raymon’s
Creek. Mike Claggett, Treasurer, reports the following:
The original annual dues payment of $120.00 is still in
effect. This has been possible due to the commitment
of our RCPOA members, which include the original
developers, to volunteer their time and services in order
to maintain and improve the community property and
facilities. Through conservative spending and saving, the
RCPOA has accumulated sufficient funding for three major
projects. We are awaiting permits for a Sill (rip/rap like
rock structure) to be placed under the community pier.
The Sill will allow us to connect to the existing rip/rap of
neighboring properties. With the Sill in place, shoreline
erosion of community property, which has occurred at a
rate of about 30 feet over the last 12 years, should be
greatly reduced. Another major improvement we are
anticipating is a covered pavilion near the entrance of our
community park. The pavilion will allow us a somewhat
protected eating area where the community can share
meals during meetings, work parties, or just have a family
pick-nic. Our final project is a play area for children
with age appropriate swings and slides.
All lots have deeded access to the Pasquotank River via
Homemade Pocosin Jam
By Jimmy Fleming mrflemz@embarqmail.com
Don’t let the title mislead you ... Homemade Pocosin Jam is
not some fruity dessert recipe!!! Homemade Pocosin Jam
is a music CD featuring local artists from Tyrrell and Hyde counties
performing folk or root music. The project was conceived by
Pocosin Arts to record local musicians performing either original
material or folk music live onstage. The recording resulted from
a two week artistic residency at Pocosin Arts funded by the NC
Arts Council, the NC Rural Center, and Tyrrell County Schools.
Twenty or so artists were invited to take part in the project and
Gary Mitchell of the group Molasses Creek was selected to
oversee the project and record/produce the live performance.
After several meeting sessions and rehearsals, the actual
performance took place at Madge Vanhorne Auditorium in 2000
to a packed house. Gary Mitchell recorded the entire show and
returned to his studio in Ocracoke to engineer, mix, and produce
the final product which was a 22 song CD with the apt name ~
Homemade Pocosin Jam – Finger Pickin’ Good. I would also
like to give credit to my wife Barbara for creating the CD cover
art. I am very proud to have been part of this project performing
three original songs that I wrote. Some of the others featured on
the CD are The Happy Followers, Jimmy Swain, Ty Fleming (my
son), Robbie Mackey, The Carawan Brothers, Marie Graham,
Bobby West, Brandan Brickhouse, Bryan Owens, Tessi Hollis,
David Furlough, Nikki Armstrong, Jack Donoghue, and Molasses
Creek. If interested you may be able to obtain a copy of
the CD from Pocosin Arts in Columbia and I have seen copies
available on Ebay. Check it out if you get chance!!
Orthodox Christianity by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
The End of the World
These days, there is a lot of anxiety about the end of the
world. It doesn’t seem to matter whether you’re a religious
person or not.
Many Christians think about “the End” as a horrific time of the
Rapture, Tribulation and the Battle of Armageddon. In an oddly
analogous way, non-Christians (or rather, non-religious folk)
have their own “end times” eschatology, marked by equally horrific
figures like over-population, the over-warming of the earth,
asteroids hitting the earth, catastrophic viral epidemics, even the
take-over of human civilization by artificial intelligence.
I am neither exaggerating here, nor am I poking fun at either of
these large groups of people. I think we are right to be concerned
about some of these issues.
But we are not right to be so afraid. And no one has a right to be
a fear-monger, whether they are religious or scientific. People
can learn to be better stewards of nature without browbeating
them with specters of environmental collapse. Just the same,
people can grow in belief in God, and a lifestyle of love and
virtue, without frightening them with images of eschatological
dread.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” St
John wrote this in his first epistle (4.18). And the early Biblical
Christian community knew this well. When they thought about
the end of the world, which they called “the Last Day,” their attitude
sharply differed from the modern one of panic and dread.
They knew, beyond any doubt, that the Last Day would be
the return of Jesus Christ to the world in glory. Unlike his first
coming in Bethlehem, this second coming would be obvious to
everyone. The entire world would recognize him at once as the
loving God, clearly beautiful as the powerful but merciful Prince
of Peace.
At that moment, the entire universe would be bathed in glory,
and in the fullness of divine love.
To be sure, they will be those whose entire life is built on violence
and hatred, and their experience of this Last Day glory
will be appalling. According to Orthodox doctrine, this reaction
against Divine Love is exactly what perdition is.
But to those who live for love, who breathe in peace, who give
their lives away in mercy and service, who wait upon beauty and
goodness -- then for these, the Last Day when Jesus comes
back to this earth will be a day of unbounded joy.
These early Christians looked upon the Last Day with hope.
They had a motto: “Marana Tha!” Which means, “Come quickly,
Lord!” They wanted to see, in their own lifetime, the Lord who
calls us all his “friends.” Not enemies or slaves of fate and objects
of deterministic manipulation, born only to sorrow.
But friends.
The end of the world is really all about the return of the Friend, https://stgeorgeedenton.org
the infinite Lover of humanity. It is something to be hoped for,
and lived for in breathless anticipation.
Historical American Space Initiatives in July
By: Kameron Iriarte Intern at MOA
Museum of the Albemarle
Since the month of July is here, we are celebrating our history. July is a
month with many historical moments in American history; specifically,
many notable space events. Many people are familiar with Neil Armstrong
being the first man to step on the moon on July 20th, 1969. However, July
20th was the day of another American space initiative: the Viking 1 landing.
The Viking 1 spacecraft was created by NASA and consisted of an orbiter
and a lander. The spacecraft launched to Mars on August 20th, 1975, and
successfully landed on July 20th, 1976. After the Viking 1 landed, it became
the first spacecraft to successfully land on Mars. After landing, the goal was
to find signs of life on Mars. The Viking 1 employed the use of an orbiter and
a lander to take high-resolution images detailing the surface and atmosphere
of the planet. The imaging system of the lander provided massive 300-degree
images that showed the surrounding environment. Interestingly, the imaging
system of the lander was not the only notable tool. Among the lander’s
arsenal of tools was a robotic arm. On July 28th, 1976, the Viking 1 lander
made history again by using its robotic arm to perform the first soil samples
on Mars. After the Viking 1 mission was completed, the orbiter and lander
continued to serve NASA until 1980 and 1982, respectively. By remaining
active long past the 90-day life expectancy, the Viking 1 spacecraft allowed
scientists to collect further data on Mars. If you are interested about space,
be sure to visit some of the space programs this July at the Museum of the
Albemarle!
Guitar Tech Talk
Fret Dressing (Do not try this at home)
As I mentioned before, just like cars need tune-ups
and tender loving care so does your guitar. Although
there are many things you can do yourself as far
as your car goes, there are many more things you need
a trained professional to fix on your guitar. One of those
many things is a fret dress.
An uneven fret or frets, can affect the way you play
whether it’s an acoustic or electric guitar. All frets
have to be even, to where they follow the contour of
the fret board, so as you move down the neck you
don’t get buzzing from the string or strings. In order to
remedy fret buzz, Frets all have to be planed evenly.
This makes the journey up the fret board sound better
without encountering that annoying dead note. The
process in which I do this is referred to as planing the
Frets. The purpose? It allows you to achieve a lower
playing action, meaning its more comfortable to play the
guitar and eliminates dead notes and buzzing strings.
So, having the Frets dressed, can dramatically change
the way a guitar plays, for the better. In order to perform
a Fret Dress, I will take a tool that’s designed for this
particular purpose and file the frets uniformly to take
down any high frets to the same level. But it’s not just
willy-nilly filing. We have to do what’s called fall off. This
means filing the 14th and beyond frets at a very slight
angle towards the body of the guitar. You get a “falling
off” look at the tongue of the fret board.
you would like for someone to care for you. If properly
maintained, your Grandchildren’s, grandchildren will get
to enjoy your instrument. So, until next time, play well,
play hard, and Play often!!!!!
“The first and most important thing an individual
can do is to become an individual again, decontrol
himself, train himself as to what is going on
and win back as much independent ground for
himself as possible”
― William S. Burroughs
First and foremost, I protect the guitar by putting a
protective cover over the body and then tape up the fret
board exposing only the frets. I then begin to mark each
fret with a sharpie for a reference point while sanding.
I need to know when enough sanding has been done.
There is a lot to it, and covering it in this article would
take up 3 full pages. My goal is to inform people that
there are ways to make a guitar play better. Sometimes
a basic setup will do the trick. Other times, it will not.
Feel free to stop by the shop for more info, or to just
say hello. Fret Dressing is one of many things, as a Luthier,
that I can perform. Your guitar is as unique as you
are, and it should be cared for in the same manner as
Summer Program at the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center
Many historians argue that the two most important developments
in human history were the ability to use fire as a
tool and the skill to shape tools from natural materials. Thousands
of years ago, early humans began to turn rocks into
tools by hitting them against each other to create sharp edges.
Though that may sound simple, “knapping” (the term used for
shaping stone) evolved from using stone chips as scrapers to
much more complex tools. The knapper had to find a rock that
was brittle yet uniform in structure and then control the way the
rock broke or flaked when struck. The process was incredibly
tedious and time consuming. With a fraction of pressure too
much, a nearly complete instrument could suddenly crack and
become two useless pieces of stone. But In the hands of a
skilled knapper, carefully edged rocks became arrowheads,
spear points, scrapers - effective working blades that changed
the course of history.
“Bushcraft” has become a popular term to describe the skills
necessary for survival in the natural world. Knapping falls into
that category, and knapped tools have evolved into works of
art that are prized not only for their usefulness but for their
beauty as well. The Frisco Native American Museum will host
a bushcrafter as one of the summer programs for 2019. Jason
Demon will demonstrate the ancient craft and display an array
of knapped tools. Visitors will also have an opportunity to see
an array of knapped artifacts on display at the museum. The
presentation is included in museum admission.
Marvelous Mahi
By Rosie Hawthorne
Wave
One of the perks of living where we do is our access to some
of the best seafood in the world. My son recently went
deep-sea fishing and came back with dolphinfish, AKA mahi
mahi, a beautiful fish and one of my favorite eating fishes. From
ocean to table in just a few hours, it doesn’t get any fresher than
this.
I’m preparing beer-battered and fried bites, served with a simple
side of coleslaw and a duo of dipping sauces – cocktail and remoulade.
My batter is light and crisp and perfectly complements
the sweet, succulent meat of the fish.
It's not just another wave,
it's an experience.
Beer-Battered Fried Mahi Mahi
Mahi mahi fillets, cut into bite-sized pieces, about 1 – 1
½ inch cubes
For the batter:
½ cup flour
½ cup corn starch
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp dried mustard
½ tsp cayenne
Pinch kosher salt
About a cup of beer
Whisk all dry ingredients together, then slowly stir in
beer. About a cup. You know – until it “looks right,”
like a thin pancake batter.
For the frying oil, I use peanut oil. It’s a neutral flavored
oil and it has a high smoke point. The smoke
point of an oil is the temperature at which the oil starts
to smoke, burn, and disintegrate. The higher the
smoke point, the more “refined” the oil, meaning fewer
impurities in the oil, which can break down and cause
the oil to smoke, imparting a burnt flavor to your fried
food.
Photo and fish courtesy of
Youngest Hawthorne.
absorb the oil, essentially steaming your food, resulting
in a greasy, not crisp, product. In other words, always
fry in batches, maintaining the high temperature, to get
a golden brown, crisp, and greaseless crust.
Drop the fish pieces into the batter to coat, then pick
up each piece individually and let the excess batter
drain off before gently easing into the hot oil. Fry in
small batches about 2 minutes, turning, until golden
brown. Drain on a rack.
For the dipping sauces, I have the ubiquitous cocktail sauce and a
remoulade sauce.
For the cocktail sauce:
½ cup ketchup
1-2 TB horseradish
1 TB lemon juice
1 TB Lea & Perrins Worcestershire.
Amounts are suggestions and a starting point. Adjust according to
your own tastes. And when I combine these ingredients, I don’t
make a homogeneous mixture. I swirl the ingredients, giving me
“pockets of flavors.”
For the remoulade sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
1 TB lemon juice
1 -2 tsp coarse grained mustard
1 tsp Tabasco or Texas Pete
½ tsp Lea & Perrins
¼ tsp paprika
¼ tsp cayenne
½ tsp chopped capers
2 tsp chopped parsley
1 TB thinly sliced scallions
Combine all ingredients.
Beaver Lake
Beaver Lake continues its legacy of memorable and unique water sports
events again this summer with back to back tournaments in June and July.
The Beaver Lake Pro-Am will be on June 15-16th followed by the North Carolina
State Water Ski Championships on July 13-14th. The club will also log its 30th
year of skiing in their little slice of heaven surrounded by the swamps and sand
ridges of western Gates County!
Beaver Lake Ski Club began as a spinoff from the River City Ski Club in Elizabeth
City back in 1990. Recognizing that competition water skiing was migrating
away from busy public waterways to calm private lakes led a few of its members
on a search that would ultimately land them in an old sand pit in Eure, NC. After
several years of working more than skiing, the borrow pit that had once been an
overgrown wasteland littered with everything from old tires to appliances was
now one of the premier water ski sites in the country!
The State Championships has been held at Beaver Lake many times since then,
along with pro jump and slalom tournaments, national collegiate and record
capability events. The organization is especially proud of the charity tournament
they hosted for many years, the Haley Mitchell Ski-a-thon, which raised over
$450,000.00 for research for a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. While continuing
with marquee competitions, the ski club has also been working more with
adaptive water sports for physically challenged skiers as well as hosting youth
ski clinics. The club is interested in partnering with other area organizations in
developing more opportunities for youth in surrounding towns to get on the water.
Beaver Lake is located on highway 13/158 about 2 miles north of the Chowan
River Bridge. Our family oriented events are free to spectators and swimming is
allowed. We appreciate folks in the area coming out and supporting our tournaments
and events. If you have never been to a Beaver Lake ski event, you really
should come out and enjoy a few hours by the lake for a unique experience with
great people!
Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center
Happy 30th Birthday
The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center opened
in the spring of 1989 and has offered travelers
and tourists a welcome stop between endless miles
of fields and open spaces along US Highway 17 in
Northeastern NC. Located in Camden County, just
three miles south of the Virginia and North Carolina
border, the center has expanded and evolved over
time. Originally, one compact building provided restrooms
and tourism information. Attendance exceeded
the projected visitation, and in a short time, plans
to add an additional building were developed, creating
a new tourism office and the original building was
converted into Rest Rooms.
Many travelers are pleasantly surprised to see
sailboats and trawlers tied up to the 150’ face dock,
located on the banks of the historic Dismal Swamp
Canal. This Visitor Center welcomes both highway
and waterway travelers entering or leaving our beautiful
state. Today’s travelers can also visit the Dismal
Swamp State Park, a North Carolina State Park, adjacent
to the Welcome Center property, to explore trails,
visit exhibits or learn more of the history of the Dismal
Swamp in their attractive Visitor Center. Camden
County Parks and Recreation manage a paved trail
which lies between the waterway and the highway,
beginning at the end of the State Park’s property. This
facility is owned by NC Department of Transportation
and tourism office is managed by Camden County.
Today our staff continues to provide updated tourism
information for all of North Carolina, and promoting
the attractions in Northeast North Carolina. To date,
over 16 million travelers have visited this complex.
In 2018, the Center was noted inUSA Todayas one of
the best Rest Areas in the nation, whileArchitectural
Digestdeclared it “One of the most beautiful Rest
Areas in America”. We invite you to share your own
opinion! Stop by to wish us a Happy Birthday and pick
5 Delicious Low-Carb Recipes Perfect for a Cookout
(StatePoint) Food on the grill, carb-loaded side dishes and
high-sugar desserts are at the center of most seasonal
cookouts. But this doesn’t mean you need to avoid those
countless neighborhood barbecues to ensure you stay on
track with your healthy lifestyle.
Courtney McCormick, manager of Clinical Research &
Nutrition for South Beach Diet, recommends these five lower-carb
recipes that are great to bring along to any cookout.
• Shredded Chicken Chili: Just toss some chicken, beans,
tomatoes and a combination of chili powder, ground cumin,
paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and
oregano in your slow cooker and let that magic machine do
all the work. Six hours later, you’ll have perfectly cooked
chicken and plenty of flavorful fixings for fewer calories than
a chicken prepared in a sugary or cheesy sauce.
• Avocado Tuna Sandwiches: Mix lemon juice, avocado,
Dijon mustard, salt and pepper in a small bowl and add
canned tuna fish. Scoop onto a slice of whole grain bread
with arugula, sliced cucumbers and red onions and you’ve
got yourself a delicious sandwich to eat in place of that
hamburger.
• Skinny Shrimp Fajitas: You won’t miss the tortilla with this
recipe! Combine shrimp, onion, bell pepper, olive oil and dry
fajita spices such as chili powder, garlic, onion, cumin and
paprika in a large bowl. Pour into a veggie basket or place
on skewers and let the grill do the work for you.
• Pesto Cilantro Dip: Bake walnuts at 275 degrees until golden
brown, then chop cilantro, garlic, and walnuts in a food
processor for about 25 seconds. With the machine running,
pour olive oil in a steady stream. Add sour cream, lemon
juice and salt. Pulse a few times to combine and you’re
done! Serve with fresh veggies.
“This recipe is quick and simple,” says McCormick. “It contains
minimal ingredients and it is packed with healthy fats.
Plus, it keeps five days in the refrigerator and freezes for up
to a month.”
• South Beach Coleslaw: Coleslaw is a BBQ staple and
this recipe for a lighter version of it is easy as 1-2-3! Whisk
together mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, celery seed and a
sugar substitute. Add cabbage and toss to combine. Season
to taste with salt and pepper and refrigerate until ready to
serve.
For more details on these recipes and other great tips and
tricks to lose weight and live healthier, visit South Beach
Diet’s website The Palm at palm.southbeachdiet.com/cookout-low-carb-recipes.
Remember, cookouts don’t need to wreak havoc on your
healthy diet. By making some simple swaps and choosing
healthier options, you’ll stay on track while still enjoying time
outdoors with family and friends.

A battle of heavyweights at the Virginia ratifying convention
by Tara Ross
In 1788, Virginia ratifies the United States Constitution.
At the time, many thought that Virginia had provided the
critical 9th vote to put the Constitution into effect. They were
wrong. New Hampshire provided that vote on June 21.
Virginia’s ratifying convention was a battle of heavyweights.
There may have been just a few strong opinions in the room.
On one side of the aisle, the “Father of the Constitution,”
James Madison, advocated for ratification. George Washington
was not present, but he wrote letters in favor of the
Constitution from home. Governor Edmund Randolph also
argued for ratification, despite the fact that he’d earlier
refused to sign the document as a delegate at the Constitutional
Convention.
On the other side sat Patrick Henry, future President James
Monroe, and the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights,
George Mason. You can imagine that, given his oratorical
skills and big personality, Henry’s opposition may have been
the biggest obstacle.
Prior to the convention, Madison wrote to Thomas Jefferson,
who was then in Paris: “Mr. Henry is the great adversary who
will render the event precarious. He is I find with his usual
address, working up every possible interest, into a spirit of
opposition.”
Oh, to be a fly on the wall! Can’t you just imagine Henry passionately
ranting a bit? Madison trying to counter his points in
a more stoic way?
Adding to the drama, the Convention had agreed to go
through the Constitution “clause by clause,” but Henry
seemed unable to stick with the plan. On the second day
of debate, he gave a very long speech. It covers more than
20 pages in Elliot’s debates! Henry concluded his tirade by
noting that “I have not said the one hundred thousandth part
of what I have on my mind, and wish to impart.” Yikes! No
wonder Governor Randolph concluded the day by noting:
“Mr. Chairman, if we go on in this irregular manner, contrary
to our resolution, instead of three or six weeks, it will take us
six months to decide this question.”
Well, I guess so!
Henry felt that the national government created by the Constitution
was too strong. It was a “consolidated” one, when it
should be a confederacy of states.
“That this is a consolidated government,” he opined, “is
demonstrably clear; and the danger of such a government is,
to my mind, very striking. . . . What right had they to say, We,
the people? . . . Who authorized them to speak the language
of, We, the people, instead of, We, the states? States are the
characteristics and the soul of a confederation. If the states
be not the agents of this compact, it must be one great,
consolidated, national government, of the people of all the
states.”
In short, Anti-Federalists did not believe that the national government
would remain limited. At a minimum, they wanted a
Bill of Rights to reserve certain powers to the states or to the
people.
Madison argued that such an enumeration of rights would be
actively dangerous to liberty. He asked the convention: “Can
the general government exercise any power not delegated?
If an enumeration be made of our rights, will it not be implied
that every thing omitted is given to the general government?”
It took the better part of a month, but Madison’s arguments
eventually won the day. On June 25, the Convention ratified
the Constitution, without requiring the addition of a Bill of
Rights first. It did, however, later approve a list of proposed
amendments to be recommended to the First Congress.
Bastiat on the Nature of Government (and Why America’s Was the Exception)
By: Gary M. Galles
Reprinted with permission from fee.org
Independence Day is an excellent time to carefully consider Frédéric Bastiat’s 1848 essay, “Government,”
one of the most insightful critiques ever given for understanding the problems that
beset governance.
America’s governance problems are a common topic among
Americans. But each Fourth of July brings that subject to
the fore. Unfortunately, however, much of the discussion and
many asserted “solutions” derive from a mistaken approach
to government. That is why Independence Day is an excellent
time to carefully consider Frédéric Bastiat’s 1848 essay, “Government,”
one of the most insightful critiques ever given for
understanding the problems that beset governance.
“I should be glad...if you had really discovered a beneficent
and inexhaustible being, calling itself the Government...which
can provide for all our wants...correct all our errors, repair all
our faults, and exempt us henceforth from the necessity for
foresight, prudence, judgment, sagacity, experience, order,
economy, temperance, and activity.”
“Nothing could be more convenient than that we should all…
have within our reach an inexhaustible source of wealth and
enlightenment—a universal physician, an unlimited treasure,
and an infallible counselor, such as you describe Government
to be.”
“Man...recoils from trouble...yet he is condemned by nature
to the suffering of privation, if he does not take the trouble to
work...What means can he adopt to avoid both?...to enjoy the
labor of others. [But]...our disposition to defend our property
prevents direct and open plunder from being easy.”
“The oppressor no longer acts directly and with his own powers
upon his victim... We all therefore, put in our claim, under
some pretext or other, and apply to Government. We say to
it ‘I should like...the possessions of others. But this would be
dangerous. Could you not facilitate the thing for me?...the law
will have acted for me, and I shall have all the advantages of
plunder, without its risk or its disgrace.’”
“[But] Government cannot satisfy one party without adding to
the labor of the others...Government is the great fiction through
which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody
else. Everyone is, more or less, for profiting by the labors of
others...Government is applied to, and every class...says, ‘You,
who can take justifiably and honestly, take from the public, and
we will partake.’”
“Alas, Government is only too much disposed to follow this
diabolical advice...to be the judge and the master of the destinies
of all...But the most remarkable part of it is the astonishing
blindness of the public...who never seem to suspect that reciprocal
plunder is no less plunder because it is reciprocal; that it
is no less criminal because it is executed legally.”
“But the thing that...never will be seen...is that Government can
restore more to the public than it has taken from it...to confer
a particular benefit upon any one... without inflicting a greater
injury upon the community as a whole...to do more harm than
good.”
“Thus the public has two hopes, and Government makes two
promises—many benefits and no taxes. Hopes and promises,
which, being contradictory, can never be realized.”
“In all times, two political systems have been in existence...
According to one of them, Government ought to do much, but
then it ought to take much. According to the other, this two-fold
activity ought to be little felt. We have to choose between these
two systems.”
“Government is and ought to be nothing but the united power
of the people, organized, not to be an instrument of oppression
and mutual plunder among citizens, but, on the contrary, to
secure to everyone his own, and to cause justice and security
to reign.”
When Bastiat, one of history’s most clear-eyed and ardent
defenders of liberty, wrote, he cited America as an exception to
his analysis of government. The reason was that here, “there is
no chimerical creation, no abstraction, from which the citizens
may demand everything. They expect nothing except from
themselves and their own energy.”
In other words, unlike most governments, ours still largely
followed its legitimate role of protecting our rights and liberties.
Unfortunately, that vision of American government has been
largely replaced by one of coercive intervention and redistribution
whenever those “in charge” see fit, combined with ever
more intense political competition to take control of ever more
such power. That loss of our one-time uniqueness is our central
governance problem.
Gary M. Galles is a professor of economics at Pepperdine
University. His recent books include Faulty Premises,
Faulty Policies (2014) and Apostle of Peace (2013). He is a
Worth a Pound of Cure
(SPM Wire) Summer is here, and nature beckons.
The benefits of spending time outside --
from an increase in vitamin D levels to the healing
powers of nature -- are common knowledge,
and outdoor activities are widely encouraged by
various health organizations. But while you’re
out and about enjoying fresh air, don’t forget to
take precautions against the possibility of being
bitten by a tick.
Ticks are tiny arthropods that live by feeding
on the blood of other animals and people. They
often transmit a variety of complicated infections
that, if untreated, can lead to dire consequences.
But you don’t have to let these tiny creatures
get in the way of your enjoyment of nature. Just
make sure to follow few simple rules before and
after your outing:
• Treat clothing and gear with products containing
permethrin, and your body with EPA-registered
insect repellent.
• Cover up if you will be spending time in bushy
or wooded areas or wandering through fields of
tall grass. Wear long sleeves and tuck your long
pants into your socks -- while this look would be
frowned upon by the fashion-conscious, it may,
literally, save your life!
• Once home, check your clothes and body for
ticks, and don’t forget some of the not-so-obvious
places, like your scalp, belly button and
underarms.
Northeast North Carolina Family History - history to visit in our backyards…
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
Some of us are familiar with the oldest brick house in North
Carolina just down the road in Perquimans county. The
Newbold-White House located at 151 Newbold-White Road in
Hertford is a brick home built by Abraham and Judith Sanders
and dates from 1730. It is furnished from the time period
between 1730 and 1750 when Abraham died and contains four
rooms. As summer finds many of us seeking a place to visit,
some historic homes where we can appreciate the lives of our
ancestors seems a good choice. The Newbold-White House
is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
between early April and October 31st. For more information
the website is: https://www.perquimansrestoration.org/index.
html
In June my husband and I drove to Surry County in Virginia
to see a location we have wanted to visit for a number of years.
We should have done it when we lived in Elizabeth City as it
would have been closer, but it was about a two hour drive from
southern Currituck. Bacon’s Castle was built by Arthur Allen.
It is the oldest brick house in North America and one of only
three Jacobean homes in our hemisphere! The other two are
in the Barbados so if you want to drive - it’s your only choice…
Four about four months in 1676, it was occupied by members
of Nathaniel Bacon’s insurrection. Our guide said they don’t
believe he was ever personally on the property. The members
of his group chased the family of Arthur Allen II out and pretty
much trashed the place before their rebellion ended. Bacon
himself died of dysentery before it was all over and 22 of his
group were hanged by the governor of Virginia. It is interesting
that the naming of the area relates to such a short termed
event, but roads, churches and many businesses in the area
carry Bacon’s Castle. The house is fully restored and has a
beautifully reconstructed formal English garden that was full of
butterflies when we visited.
It is owned and operated by Preservation Virginia and mostly
open on weekends. For more information and pricing visit
their website: https://preservationvirginia.org/historic-sites/bacons-castle/
Dr Bald
Since we were going to be in Surry County anyway, I
searched online to find other sites of interest and was surprised
that about twelve miles away from Bacon’s Castle, Preservation
Virginia had another historic home that at one time was
thought to be the oldest brick house in America. Smith’s Fort
Plantation is a part of the property originally given to John Rolfe
and Pocahontas by her father at the time of their marriage.
Dendrochronology which dates wood, changed the date of the
home from the mid 1600’s to the mid 1700’s and it is similar
to the White-Newbold home in that it contains four rooms on
two floors. Built by Jacob Faulcon, the house was purchased
and restored by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1932 and acquired
by what is now Preservation Virginia in 1933. The furnishings
are from the late 1600’s and early 1700’s and describing them
as impressive does not do them justice. A half mile walk down
a slightly overgrown farm road from the house brings you
to the site of Captain John Smith’s 1609 “New Fort” directly
across the James River from Jamestown. All that remains are
the earthworks similar to those on Roanoke Island. With the
vegetation including stately old trees, you would probably miss
the site if it weren’t for the markers. You can appreciate that
it would have been an easy site to defend as in Smith’s own
words the site is, “...upon high commanding hill, very hard to be
assaulted an easie to be defended.” If you buy tickets to both
sites you get a reduced price and for more information visit
the website at: https://preservationvirginia.org/historic-sites/
smiths-fort-plantation/
Take time to visit some interesting sites this summer. If not
sites historic to the country at least to your family and record
your visit and what your family did there for posterity. Enjoy the
pictures I’m including - hopefully...
Dr. Bald recently gave a presentation to the Elizabeth
City Morning Rotary Club on his volunteer
work in Uganda and Tanzania. He shared slides and
stories of multiple surgeries he performed in these
countries where there are about 30 oral surgeons to
serve over 50 million people.
In March Dr. Bald will again be visiting Tanzania. Now,
in Tanzania, any patient needing anesthesia must go to
the hospital. During this visit Dr. Bald will train Tanzanian
oral surgeons to administer anesthesia for minor
surgeries in medical offices and clinical settings. Dr.
Bald will present his workshops at the Dental School at
Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
In the Albemarle Region, Dr. Bald uses modern equipment
and anesthesia techniques. Our goal is to provide
excellent care for every patient. Even though Dr. Bald
has extracted over 350,000 teeth, each patient is an
individual and every case is unique.
Our patients have a positive experience! Recent
patients have commented, “ I would recommend every
person I know to go there.”; “As soon as I walked in
I felt very comfortable.”; “The experience was very
positive, easy, and fast!!!”; “My waiting time was very
short.”; “I was super afraid of getting my wisdom teeth
removed. He put my mind at ease.”; “I got in the week
I called.”; “I really liked Dr. Bald and his staff.”; “Best
dental appointment ever!”; “Dr. Bald was amazing. He
talked me through the whole procedure. He was very
pleasant and positive and funny.”
Our Elizabeth City location is at 1134 N. Road Street,
Building 7, near the hospital. We also have an office in
Nags Head where we do surgeries on Thursdays. We
offer Saturday appointments in Elizabeth City. At both
locations we pull teeth AND more.
Please call us for your oral surgery needs.
Work Toward Your Own Financial Independence Day
Once again, it’s time for fireworks, pic-nics
and parades as the nation celebrates Independence
Day. Collectively, we enjoy many liberties,
but some freedoms can be elusive – and
financial freedom is one of them. What actions
can you take to help yourself eventually declare
your own financial independence?
For starters, you’ll want to determine what financial
independence means to you. Is it the liberty
to meet all your cash flow needs? The freedom
to retire comfortably, at the age you choose? The
ability to set up the kind of legacy you’d like to
leave?
If any or all of these things are important to you,
consider the following suggestions:
• Liberate yourself from oppressive debts.
The cost of living is certainly not cheap, so it’s
hardly surprising that so many people incur significant
debt. Yet, the higher your debt load, the
less you’ll have available to invest for the future.
Debt might be one of the biggest barriers you
face on the road to your financial independence.
To avoid piling on too much debt, live within your
means. Take steps such as saving for a vacation,
rather than putting it all on your credit card,
and getting just one more year out of that old
car. Look for bargains everywhere – and find
out what you can live without. And if you have
sizable debts, see if you can consolidate them
and lower your interest payments.
• Free yourself from chaotic investing.
The financial markets can be unpredictable –
but that doesn’t mean your investment moves
have to be chaotic. So, for example, instead of
responding to a sudden plunge in stock prices
by selling stocks that still may be fundamentally
sound with strong growth potential, you might
be much better off by holding your ground. And
you’ll be in a better position to do nothing during
periods of market volatility when you’ve already
done something – namely, built an investment
portfolio that reflects your goals, time horizon
and risk tolerance. With this type of portfolio in
place, you’ll be in a good position to overlook the
day-to-day fluctuations in the market and keep
your focus on your long-term goals.
• Unleash the potential in your re-tirement plan.
Your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan
is a great way to save for retirement. You can
contribute pre-tax dollars, so the more you put
in, the lower your taxable income, and your earnings
can grow tax deferred. (With a Roth 401(k),
you put in after-tax dollars, but your withdrawals
are tax-free, pro-vided you meet certain conditions.)
But despite these tax advantages, your 401(k)’s
full potential won’t be realized unless you fund it
adequately. Try to contribute as much as you can
afford each year and increase your contributions
as your salary goes up. Another way to uncap
your 401(k)’s potential is by choosing appropriate
investments. Your 401(k) likely contains a
dozen or more investment options, so you’ll want
a mix that offers the greatest possibilities for
growth within the context of your personal risk
tolerance.
Gaining your financial independence requires
time and commitment. But once you’ve achieved
this freedom, you’ll know it was worth the effort.
And who knows? You might even want to wave a
sparkler or two to celebrate.
New Life of Currituck
Making memories
by Pastor Dan Bergey
Something that I have learned over the years is that memories
are a part of what shapes us, good and bad ones. Sometimes
those memories get locked away until something happens and
brings them back to the surface. Often it’s the little things in life that
end up meaning the most to us later in life. It’s not the stuff that we
had that is important but instead the things that we did. The times we
spent together as a family, the times we helped someone in need,
the times that we were there for someone when they needed us the
most. We try to lock away and forget the bad things. The bad things
are just as important in shaping us as the good. We need to learn
from the bad and not dwell on it. Give everything to God, the good
and the bad.
Don’t let situations control who and what you are. In a way it’s like
this with God. He remembers what we did too. He remembers when
we spend time with him, when we help people, when we do everything.
The best part is that when we turn our lives over to God and
ask for forgiveness, he forgets our bad stuff. Psalm 25:7 says “Do
not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; According
to Your lovingkindness remember me, For Your goodness’ sake, O
LORD.” It’s important to spend time with your family and make memories,
but it’s even more important to spend time with God and make
memories with him. As you are out this summer “making memories”
with your family, don’t forget to spend time with God too.
Psalm 98:3 He has remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness
to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the
salvation of our God.
Albemarle Eye Center
by: Kierstan Boyd
Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of
your eye’s cornea or lens. Normally, the cornea
and lens are smooth and curved equally in all directions.
This helps to focus light rays sharply onto
the retina at the back of your eye. If your cornea or
lens isn’t smooth and evenly curved, light rays aren’t
refracted (bent) properly. Doctors call this a refractive
error.
When your cornea has an irregular shape, you have
corneal astigmatism. When the shape of your lens is
distorted, you have lenticular astigmatism. In either
case, your vision for both near and far objects is blurry
or distorted. It’s almost like looking into a fun house
mirror in which you can appear too tall, too short, too
wide or too thin.
People may have astigmatism along with other refractive
errors. Those errors may include things like:
• nearsightedness (myopia) or
• farsightedness (hyperopia).
Adults with significant astigmatism may realize their
vision isn’t as good as it should be. Children with astigmatism
symptoms may not be aware they have this
condition. They are unlikely to complain about blurred
or distorted vision.
Uncorrected astigmatism can impact a child’s ability to
achieve in school and sports. It is crucial that children
have regular eye exams. Get these exams to detect
astigmatism and other vision problems as early as
possible.
Orange Carte- New area delivery service
Orange Crate has been in business since 2015 providing service
deliveries throughout the USA. Also, Now, operates as a locally
owned franchise in and around the Elizabeth City area. Currently,
Orange Crate delivers from any Elizabeth City area restaurant within
a 20-mile radius of the restaurant’s location. Using Orange Crate’s
service is as easy as talking on your cell phone: 1- download their
app or go to the website 2- input your address and service area
restaurants will populate a delivery radius on your screen 3- chose
your restaurant, select from the menu and go to checkout. An easy 3
step process and within minutes food from your favorite restaurant is
at your doorstep
Orange Crate led by a proven management team with plans to
expand into the Outer Banks by Memorial Day Weekend with drivers
covering Mile Post 1 to Mile Post 18 in a 15-mile radius into the
mainland. By the Holiday season of 2019, Orange Crate will begin
expanding into Currituck and Moyock. In early 2020, Hertford and
Edenton will be included as part of the final leg to cover our region.
In the opinion of the Tradewinds publisher, it is the small-business
like “ Orange Crate” who will create much needed future entry-level
jobs and allows an employee to earn” a living wage” which in turn
pulls families and communities out of poverty and government dependency.
Orange Crate is one of a few businesses locals can all support with
just the stroke of a few keys on our cell phones or laptops and keeps
our money turning -over in the local economy while assisting the
creation new entry-level jobs and a new middle-class. Your support is
very-much appreciated.
What Causes Astigmatism?
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the
eye’s cornea or lens. If your cornea or lens isn’t evenly
curved, light rays aren’t refracted properly. With astigmatism
you have blurred or distorted vision at near
and far distances.
Astigmatism is very common. Doctors don’t know why
corneal shape differs from person to person. They
do know that likelihood of developing astigmatism is
inherited.
Astigmatism can develop after an eye disease, eye
injury or surgery. It is a myth that astigmatism can develop
or worsen from reading in low light or sitting very
close to the television.
Astigmatism Symptoms
Astigmatism symptoms may include:
• blurry vision or areas of distorted vision
• eyestrain
• headaches
• squinting to try to see clearly, or
• eye discomfort
If you have these symptoms you may not necessarily
have astigmatism. You should visit to your ophthalmologist.
A complete eye exam will determine what is
causing your symptoms.
