Elizabeth City Chamber News by: Holly Staples We had a record crowd at our 9th Annual Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon on June 19! Twenty very deserving nominees were honored, while five winners were named. Our winners are: Amber Davis, principal of Camden County High School and Camden Early College High School; Norma James, Broker-In -Charge at Taylor Mueller Realty; Rhonda James-Davis, Career and Technical Education Director and Interim Superintendent at Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools; Rachel Reddick, church and community volunteer; and Dena Richardson, Interim Fire Marshal for the City of Elizabeth City. These women were honored for going above and beyond in their careers and in their service to the community. A big thank you to event sponsor Piedmont Natural Gas, and to our hosts at The Carolina Center at Corporate Drive for providing a wonderful setting. Albemarle Floral supplied roses for the nominees, Margaret Twiford provided beautiful table centerpieces, and Shaklee-Gwen Bell provided goody bags. Thanks so much to the Women of Excellence Committee, nominators, honorees, and attendees! Also in June, we had a great time sampling the delicious offerings from The Mills Downtown Bistro at a Business After Hours on June 17, and we helped the City of Elizabeth City celebrate their expanded drive through on June 18. We’d love to see you at one of our July events! On July 16, we will host a ribbon cutting at Coldwell Banker Seaside Realty, and on July 25, Hearndon Construction has invited us to tour a model home at Stockbridge at Tanglewood. See you there! The Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Parks and Recreation Department is proud to bring you the Downtown Waterfront Market. This market is held every Saturday from June 1st-August 31st, 2019. The hours of the market are 9am-1pm and is held in the heart of the Elizabeth City waterfront, Mariners’ Wharf Park. Each week different vendors come to showcase their handmade talents and homemade/homegrown products. Be it the farmer with the fresh produce, eggs, or raw honey or the one selling microgreens and black garlic. We have beautiful, unique handmade jewelry pieces that you will not find anywhere else. Vendors make all natural, handmade soaps, body lotions, hair care products, and beauty masks. Also for sell are homemade doggie treats, fresh baked items, and sunscreen and bug spray made from nothing but all natural, pure ingredients. Stop by and grab a handmade whirligig or homemade barbeque and hot sauces. Besides these vendors, each week different nonprofit agencies are spotlighted at the market. These vendors provide information, raffles, food and drinks, crafts and so much more. Health and Nutrition Strategies For Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET? My life’s mission and passion is about mitigating cancer, and its effects. When I hear terms like, “I’m fighting cancer”, and I’m cancer-free, I’ve wondered what it means? A few years ago, when I facilitated a “Man to Man” prostate cancer support group we often discussed those subjects to develop strategy’s.. It was always inconclusive. Here’s my take. Fifteen years ago when I was diagnosed, my cancer mentor and brother Mel, helped me to understand that the best strategy to fight cancer was NOT to cede your control of your health. The group agreed and added that your medical advisers or team are your hirees..You’re buying their services, they’re providing you with their expertise and options, You are the decider. The support group also thought it imperative to have a Comprehensive Treatment Center’s opinion as part of your decision making process, either as your primary source of information, or for a second opinion. Comprehensive cancer treatment centers (there are 70 in the U.S.). They are the best providers to determine the most effective strategy for you. That might be radiation, chemical, hormonal, immune or watch and wait observation, their opinion will inform your local provider. I chose John’s Hopkins (Sidney Kimmel Clinic) for my cancer team, because of their propensity toward a dietary-link based strategy, and their easy commute. I tested their dietary assertion by participating in a phase one and two clinical trial testing muscadine grape skin capsules. It controlled my cancer for over two years. I’m convinced. Cancer cells are tricky, their strategy is to mutate and adjust. Your challenge is to counter that adjustment with your own adjustment. My strategy to defeat their adjustment is by using food.. To me that means strengthening your immune system. Strengthening your immune system means strengthening your diet. Warren Green can be reached at warreng9241@hotmail.com As far as ‘the term “cancer-free”, I’ve never been an advocate or understood how the term got into use. It’s a misnomer. A surgeon might say he removed a lesion or tumor and announce “I got it all”. Cancer cells are microscopic. So you got microscopic maverick cells in your bloodstream looking for weaknesses and ways to evade your immune system. In our toxic, carcinogen laden environment, everyone has cancer cells at some level. Nobody is cancer free,it’s just non-detectable. Next month I’ll be 80 years, and I’ll be developing strategies for the next 3 years. I’m beginning an adventure in a 62 and older community (Overture,VB) . My new neighborhood provides enough food options to optimize my diet, to levels I’ve never approached. I have access to products like impossible (vegan) burgers, and nondairy cheese. I’m thinking about alternating a modified Mediterranean with a vegetarian diet, and monitor my blood work which I do quarterly. Medicare and a supplement will cover the cost. Finally, I thought I should recognize “The Green Bronx Machine” as a top ten Health and Wellness program in the country. These are inner city kids growing food and exporting their expertise all over the world. Food, must be focused on to mitigate the effects of our increasingly polluted environment. Before we get into that, I wanted to give a shout out to my cancer mentor, and brother Mel who helped me formulate strategies and perspectives to manage my cancer. .
