SPORT 33
Razor a cut above ABs coaching contenders
IF SCOTT Robertson can
become the first head coach
to guide a side to a Super
Rugby three-peat, he has to be
the front-runner for the All
Blacks top job when it becomes
available in November.
Yes, Robertson has
no experience coaching
internationally overseas.
However, why let his talents be
used against us when he’s proven
at arguably the highest level
below test match rugby and is
there for the taking?
His record in provincial and
Super Rugby alone more than
fits the bill.
Wayne Smith was made All
Blacks coach in 2000 following
back-to-back Super Rugby titles
at the helm of the Crusaders in
1998 and 1999.
Meanwhile, John Mitchell’s
appointment to the All Blacks
job came on the back of just one
sixth-placed campaign with the
Chiefs in 2001.
Many have Ian Foster tipped
to be Steve Hansen’s successor.
He has a wealth of experience
as an assistant coach with
the national team since 2012.
However, he was in charge of the
Chiefs for eight years, from 2004
until 2011, and in that time they
made the finals only twice and
never won a title.
One-eyed Cantab
Gordon Findlater
gordon.findlater@starmedia.kiwi
They were also on the
receiving end of the worst ever
loss suffered in a Super Rugby
final.
Early options outside of
Robertson and Foster included
Joe Schmidt, who has since
openly put himself out of
contention for the job.
Warren Gatland was likely
to be another favourite for
the position after boasting an
impressive record with Ireland,
Wales and the British and Irish
Lions.
However, Gatland’s
decision to take on the Chiefs
role seems to have signalled
he won’t be the man to replace
Hansen.
Staying with the chiefs, Dave
Rennie is another heavyweight
– he and Robertson are the only
first year Super Rugby coaches
to win titles. However, Rennie
looks like a favourite to end up
with the Wallabies job.
Vern Cotter and Jamie Joseph
are the other names being
thrown about, but a betting
man would find it hard to go
past it being a shootout between
Robertson and Foster.
In that case, it begs the
question, do we want to go for
the safe option in Foster or
choose the best coach in Super
Rugby history?
