The Star Thursday July 4 2019 30 SPORT Canterbury sign up young fast bowlers PACE BOWLERS Fraser Sheat and Jackson Latham have been named as Canterbury’s final two contracted players for the upcoming domestic cricket season. Latham, 25, earns a professional contract for the first time and is the only new face on the team for the 2019/20 season. The Burnside West quick has come up over the past three seasons through the Canterbury A Fraser Sheat system. He is excited about the prospect of playing cricket fulltime and has always looked up to Canterbury great Shane Bond for inspiration. “I’m absolutely blown away. The chance to represent Canterbury and to play cricket as my full-time commitment is a dream come true. I’m looking forward to being able to dedicate more time to my match preparation both in the gym and training with the rest of the team,” said Latham. “As a kid, I remember heading down to QE’s Village Green to watch Shane Bond bowl, so being able to don the red and black like Bond is pretty awesome.” Sheat, 21, debuted for Canterbury in October 2017. United lead the Canterbury Championship League, which is the second tier of Mainland Football. They upset the odds by defeating Mainland Premier League champions Cashmere Technical in the third round of the cup last month to set up the match between the final two Mainland teams in the competition. “We’ve put a team together this year just to get promoted from the CCL to the MPL, so any result that came in the cup was a bonus. It was a good buzz in the group prior to the game and we came away with the result,” said United captain Michael White. “That’s dead and buried now and we’re ready to go again against Nelson Suburbs.” United have won the Chatham Cup six times in the club’s history, but the last victory was back in 1991. Saturday’s fourth round clash will be the biggest match for the club in many years. Due to United playing in the CCL, White expects Suburbs will know little about what to expect from his side. However, United have a large number of former MPL players who have no shortage of playing experience against the recent MPL runnersup. “We know what they bring to the table and they probably don’t know too much about us . . . it’s going to be a good game. They play attacking football and so do we, so I’m sure there will be plenty of goals,” said White. The Star Thursday July 4 2019 • By Gordon Findlater CLARK MCLEOD has gone from peeling off the back of the Crusaders scrum to peeling for sale signs off residential, commercial and rural properties. The former No 8 appears to be doing a good job as a real estate agent in Ashburton. He even managed to take a 10min break during our interview to sell a property. McLeod made 21 appearances for the Crusaders between 1997 and 1999. He started out with Allenton in Ashburton and can remember scoring his first try in a game his father was refereeing. He played age group rep rugby for Mid-Canterbury before attending secondary school in Christchurch and then joining the Christchurch club. “I wasn’t successful in making their senior team, but there was an opportunity to trial for High School Old Boys because they were playing a 75th jubilee match,” McLeod said. “Steve Hansen got me to trial for his High School Old Boys team, which was in his early days of coaching, and from there I went through the club as a young loose forward at the same time as Reuben Thorne.” In 1996, he made his Canterbury debut and was part of a tour to Argentina which led to his selection in the Crusaders squad in 1997. During their maiden Super Rugby titlewinning season in 1998, McLeod made seven appearances, including five starts, before making six appearances from the bench. “The team had a work hard, play hard attitude. We had a lot of fun along the way and had a lot of old school values. It just so happened that rugby turned professional at that stage, so we all played for the enjoyment and fun, but still had expectation and levels of responsibility,” he said. One of McLeod’s most memorable moments came while sitting on the bench next to Aaron Flynn. With less than 5min to go in a game the Crusaders had all but won, a message was radioed down from Hansen to Darren Shand who was in his early days as Crusaders manager. The message was for the pair to go on as a late substitution. “Oggy [Flynn] turned to me and said ‘you don’t want to go on do you?’ I said ‘no’,” he said. So Flynn told Shand to relay a message to Hansen telling him to politely get stuffed. “The look on Shandy’s face was brilliant and he did relay the message, but it was all lighthearted,” said McLeod. The loose forward says Norm Maxwell’s habits made him one of the most undesired roommates on away trips. However, his most memorable rooming moment came with Andrew Mehrtens after he famously dissapointed Bulls fans in Pretoria after kicking a longrange match-winning drop goal in 1999. “We didn’t think much of SKILLED: Clark McLeod made 21 appearances as a loose forward for the Crusaders between 1997 and 1999. it at the time because it was a hostile crowd . . . it wasn’t until I happened to be rooming with him later on in Sydney on our way home and the phone was going mad because the media were in a storm,” said McLeod. His own most memorable moment on the field came in a match at Lancaster Park against the Sharks. Stu Loe was injured and a replacement prop sin-binned. The shortage meant McLeod made an appearance at hooker with Mark Hammett shifting to prop. “It was pretty much a South African international front row . . . I was all nice and relaxed because I thought it was going to be golden oldies scrums, but next thing it was all on and I’m popping out the top of the scrum not knowing what had just happened,” he said. Following his final season with the Crusaders in 1999, McLeod played two seasons in Japan with Suntory, which had Eddie Jones on their coaching staff. He returned to Ashburton following the death of his father and decided to buy into the family real estate business, Hastings McLeod Ltd. The business currently franchises under the name Property Brokers. SPORT 31 in brief Mixed formula 3 results for Armstrong Marcus Armstrong experienced highs and lows in the third round of the FIA Formula 3 Championship in Austria over the weekend. The 18-year-old Christchurch driver won pole at the Red Bull Ring before going on to finish third in the opening race of the weekend. In race two, he started sixth and moved his way up to second. However, on the final lap, Armstrong swooped around the outside of his teammate Robert Shwartzman and took the lead. Then heartbreak struck when Shwartzman clipped his rear tyre, and Armstrong was forced off the road with a puncture. A post-race penalty was assigned to Shwartzman. Armstrong limped over the line out of the points. He is currently fourth in the championship. Garvey to represent NZ at golf’s Astor Trophy United States college-based Canterbury golfer Amelia Garvey has been selected in the fourstrong New Zealand team to compete at the Astor Trophy in Canada next month. The women’s team tournament will feature amateur golfers from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. It has been played every four years since 1959. Garvey has been in form recently after finishing runner-up at the British women’s amateur championship in Northern Ireland. NZ under-23 call-up for Canty footballers Canterbury footballers Ellis Hare-Reid (Ayr), Jordan Spain (Cashmere Technical), Sean Liddicoat (Coastal Spirit), Jackson Brady (Christchurch United), Seth Clark (Cashmere Technical) and Byron Heath (Lower Hutt City) have been selected in the New Zealand under-23 squad. They will compete at the Pacific Games in Samoa, which starts on Monday. The players will be aiming to put their hands up for NZ’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualification campaign.
