CELEBRATE
CONNECTION
By Brian Cushing ’84
Family connections have been part of the O’Dowd experience
from the earliest days of the school’s existence.
Literally thousands of alumni can make connections to a
sibling, cousin, parent, or grandparent who also walked the
“hallowed halls” sung about in our alma mater (the 1963
version, not the original 1955 version).
Brian Cushing ’94, Sheila Moyles Cushing ’57 and Colleen Cushing ’19.
rousing game of Bishop O’Dowd High School Trivia. Do
you know which principal had the longest tenure of office?
(see answer below)
Sheila Moyles Cushing ’57 was the elder stateswoman at
the event, sharing stories with her grandchildren,
Colleen ’19 and Bob ’20. Jess Brown ’98 and his daughter,
Jasaiya ’21, were the youngest Legacy connection in
attendance. Five different decades of Dragon experiences
were shared and some recorded as current students interviewed
their parent/grandparent as part of the Dragon
Stories Oral History Project launched in anticipation of
the school’s 75th Anniversary. Plans are in the making for a
Legacy Luncheon in 2018-19, so if you are part of a current
Legacy family, keep your eye out for news of this fun event.
Answer: Fr. Richard Ranalleti, CSB, was O’Dowd’s longest
serving principal (1991-2000).
On April 26, 2018, more than 50 members of Legacy families
came together for a special reception sponsored by
the Alumni Relations Office. Legacy families are unique
members of the O’Dowd community who have second or
third generations of students following in a direct line the
footsteps of their parents or grandparents.
Guests gathered in the Center for Environmental Studies
on a evening that was blessed with a beautiful sunset on
the Bay. After mingling with and getting to know other
families from the decades (helped along with an O’Dowdbased
game of People Bingo), the families competed in a
Diego ’22 and Connor ’20 Whitehill.
