The South West Zones Basketball Tournament was held at Wharenui Stadium on Tuesday 18 June. Nine Senior Students represented Oaklands at this tournament. We played a total of four games, wining one of them and losing the other three by small margins. The team can be very proud of their efforts which resulted in them finishing third overall. It was great to see the team working well together with lots of passing and working together for the common good of the team. Thanks to Marie, Eddie and Amanda for helping out with transport. Without our fantastic parent helpers we could not do what we do. While we have not progressed on to the next round of competition, we will take our learnings from the tournament and transfer these into our weekly Friday games. We look forward to more exciting Basketball as the season progresses. Oaklands School Rebuild Our rebuild is underway watch our website for updates Hub 5 Park Detectives All three Hub 5 classes have visited the Botanic Gardens and were involved in some learning called ‘Park Detectives’, this was run by educators from the Christchurch City Council. The Park Detectives Programme was an informative and interactive lesson and the children learnt about.....birds, bugs and trees. They discovered how birds communicate and pollinate our flowers and trees. Students also got a chance to do some bird watching. They had some great encounters with some fantail. After that, the children learnt about bugs and how they are so important to the decomposition of the trees and vegetation. Finally, the students looked at the New Zealand native trees and how they help our environment. Thanks to all of our parent helpers! Josie Leoni’s recap: On Thursday the 23rd of May 5DH went on a wonderful trip! It took 10 - 15 minutes, once we got to the gardens we got straight into the 1st activity. We got given a card and got told, “Don’t show ANYONE”. We played a fun game where we had to find our other bird family by using the voice of the bird. I was a “Piwakawaka” also known as a “Fantail” after we found our brothers and sisters we had to find our parent, the fantail’s parent was Jenna’s grandpa. When we had finished we then had another activity we listened, to the wonderful chirping of birds. We had a notepad where we recorded the birds. Hub 3 and 4 at Orana Park! Hub 3 and 4 were fortunate enough to be able to go to Orana Park. We had been looking forward to this trip for a long time, and it did not disappoint! The weather was kind to us which made for an easy walk around the zoo. We learnt so much about all the different animals and sustainability. We split into our classes and went with different tour guides. The guides captivated the student’s attention – and indeed our and the parents – for the entire day, as their knowledge was taken in by us and the students as we explored each of the species the Park had to offer. We saw and learnt more about animals such as the Gorillas, Cheetahs, Rhinos, Giraffes, Tigers, Birds, and Spider Monkeys! The children added to their knowledge of sustainability – to help protect the Gorillas, you can recycle your old mobile phone! This is so that manufacturers can reuse a certain material in phones that is found in Gorillas’ habitats! This way, people don’t have to keep destroying their homes! Also palm oil products were recommended that we do not buy these products, as Tigers are facing a similar problem! We all really enjoyed our time at Orana Park and can not wait to learn more about animals and sustainability in the classroom! Hub 6 @ Travis Wetlands Hub 6 visited Travis Wetlands as part of their Science Unit on Sustainability. See below for some students writing about the Travis Wetlands. Travis Wetlands - The bus ride was 40 minutes long and quite bumpy, when we got to the wetlands we had a quick snack and an introduction. After that, we went to the information centre and found out that 200 years ago, 95% of New Zealand was wetlands before the Europeans came along. We also found out that a wetland is like a bed and breakfast, a sieve, an airport, a sponge and a home. Then we split off into our two groups, my group headed off with Pete to look at water creatures. We used the retrieval device (a sieve on a stick) to catch the water creatures. Keisha got super lucky and got about fifteen water creatures on her first go, they include the water boatman, the backswimmer and the mite. Not long after that, I found a damselfly nymph and it was going crazy. We also found a water snail, but we let it go because it wasn’t moving. Then Pete took ours to show it to everyone because we had caught the most. We let them go to finish, which was sad because I had gotten attached to those guys. - Written by Scarlett. Travis Wetlands - As we hopped off the bus 6RF and half of 6SL put their bags down. Pete (the instructor) gave us an introduction about what we were going to do. We split into two groups and had two activities. Pete also said how the Wetlands is a home, a sieve, a bed and breakfast, a sponge and an airport. He also explained how 200 years ago 95% of the land was covered in wetlands, but now only 4% is left. My first activity was bird watching. Peter was the name of the instructor helping us as we got to the place, it was in a little hut. He told us to grab binoculars and watch for birds. I saw paradise ducks, black swans and shuffler. I enjoyed going to Travis Wetlands!
WESTERN NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday July 9 2019 7 News Dangerous intersection upgrade plan • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A PLAN to turn the city’s fourth most dangerous junction into a T-intersection to reduce crashes has received mixed feedback. The city council has received 137 submissions on its proposal for a $1 million safety upgrade at the Middleton, Ilam and Riccarton Rd intersection. A seminar on the intersection was held between city council staff and the Halswell- Hornby- Helen Broughton Riccarton Community Board last week. Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said she couldn’t comment on the meeting due to it being publicly excluded. She said there had been mixed feedback on banning right turns from Ilam Rd onto Riccarton Rd, but did not appear to be “overwhelming opposition” to the plan. The plan would involve restricting Riccarton Rd from Middleton Rd to left turns in SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS: Safety improvements are planned for the intersection of Ilam, Middleton and Riccarton Rds. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER and out only, as well as narrowing the road to allow more footpath space for pedestrians. The left turn slip lanes from Ilam Rd into Riccarton Rd would also be removed. Mrs Broughton said she would prefer to have the intersection realigned so that Ilam Rd connected through to Middleton Rd. The intersection is ranked the city’s fourth most dangerous with 40 crashes with varying degree of injury since 2011. “It is a very dangerous intersection. We have always wanted it done but we have never been able to get it done, the reason now is it is part of the cycleway programme,” Mrs Broughton said. The intersection will be upgraded as part of the Nor’West Arc Major Cycle Route, which was approved in March last year.
