THREE basketballers will get the
chance to learn from Kiwi NBA
star Steven Adams this weekend
in Christchurch.
Cashmere High players Louis
Oskam, St Andrew’s College player
Mac Stodart and Christ’s College’s
Mason Whittaker will also
take part with Cashmere player
Tom Webley selected but unable to
attend through injury.
Oskam was determined to show
off his skills on the court this year.
Now the 18-year-old has been
rewarded for his patience after he
was selected to be part of the Steven
Adams Invitational training session
at Horncastle Arena on Sunday.
The event is a chance for some of
the best secondary school players
in New Zealand to learn from the
Oklahoma City Thunder NBA centre
and other skilled coaches.
Just 12 months ago, Oskam
was selected but missed out on
the camp due to injury. He also
missed Cashmere High’s national
secondary school championship
campaign as well.
Oskam tore the meniscus in his
knee last year and then tore his
MCL at the South Island championships,
which made him miss the
team’s premier tournament.
“In the back of my head I knew I
had next year so I wanted to work
hard to get back,” he said.
The year 13 student, who has
been part of the Cashmere High
senior team for the past four
seasons is determined to finish his
school career on his terms.
“My first reaction was that it
made me really excited and I was
glad to get an opportunity at it
again,” he said.
Oskam said he believes he has
learnt how to use his size to improve
all the areas of his game.
He also takes his leadership role
seriously.
“We have to maintain our
standards and push harder to
be better at nationals, the senior
guys feel a responsibility to keep
improving.”
Oskam hopes training and
learning with top coaches at
the camp will help him achieve
his dream of playing college
basketball in the United States
next year.
ON THE RISE: Cashmere
High’s Louis Oskam has been
selected to take part in the
Steven Adams Invitational
camp at Christchurch’s
Horncastle Arena on Sunday.
UN youth
trip for Villa’s
head girl
• By Georgia O’Connor-
ONE OF the biggest messages
Villa Maria College’s head girl
Eadaoin Roughan tries to pass
onto her fellow students is to “give
everything a try.”
“Giving it a go won’t hurt anyone,
you can only grow and learn
from it,” she said.
So while Eadaoin, 17, didn’t
know a lot about the United Nation
Youth New Zealand’s Global
Development Tour 2020, she
decided to take her own advice by
applying for the trip.
She is now one of 22 students
from across the country selected
for a month-long tour of Europe
and New York to learn about the
UN’s Sustainable Development
Goals in action.
Eadaoin has been chosen alongside
Lincoln High School’s Maria
Mendoza Nieto and Sujean In of
St Margaret’s College.
The tour, which begins in January,
will see the delegation travel
to London, Rome, Vienna, Berlin
and Paris.
The Sustainable Development
Goals are the UN’s blueprint
addressing global challenges
including poverty, inequality,
climate, environmental
degradation and justice.
