“We need ethnic faces in
council to tell the council what
these communities need, as well
as telling them what council can
do for them,” he said.
He will also run under The
Clive Antony, whose parents
migrated to New Zealand from
south India, announced last
month he will run for the Central
Ward city council seat under
centre-right political organisation
Independent Citizens.
He said he was encouraged to
run after March 15.
“I think Indian friends and
family pushed me to go for it,
and I think March 15 has made
everyone think a lot more about
representation
in politics. It
has definitely
got the
community
thinking a lot
more for sure,”
he said.
In May,
imam of the Al
Noor Mosque
Gamal Fouda
announced
he will be
running to represent Riccarton
on the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
with The People’s Choice.
Born in Egypt, he moved to
New Zealand in 2003.
“After March 15, I wanted
to give back to the community
after all the love and care that
Christchurch, New Zealand and
the world had shown,” he said.
Mr Fouda said he wants to be a
bridge between the Muslim and
wider community.
Muslim community advocate
TWO FORMER mayoral
candidates have not ruled out
running again in October’s local
John
Minto
Lonsdale,
who both
lost to Mayor
Lianne
John Minto
Paul Lonsdale
say they are
considering
running
for the
again.
In the 2016
Mr Minto,
Minto and Lonsdale
running again this year as he
believes it is time for change.
“I think for Lianne, this is a
retirement job for her and she is
very much a 1980s politician and
I think we need to move into the
new century,” he said.
Mr Lonsdale lost the 2013
mayoral election, receiving
22,855 votes, while Ms Dalziel
got 72,600.
“I have
stood against
Lianne
before but it
would not
be unheard
of for me
to give it
another
crack. It is
something I
had not really Lianne Dalziel
thought of
but there are people actually
asking if I would run, so it will
form part of my consideration,”
he said.
The former Hagley-
Ferrymead and Heathcote
wards city councillor said he is
also considering running for a
seat on the council.
