SUICIDE AWARENESS & PREVENTION MODULE 2018<br />

LESSON THREE: DEVELOPING AN AWARENESS OF THE SIGNS OF SUICIDE:<br />

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE TEACHER:<br />

1. The teacher should prepare copies of Worksheet 4 (<strong>Awareness</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Prevention</strong>),<br />

H<strong>and</strong>out 3 (Some Situations precipitating youth suicide), <strong>and</strong> H<strong>and</strong>out 4 (<strong>Suicide</strong> Warning<br />

Signs).<br />

2. The teacher should distribute Worksheet 4 (<strong>Awareness</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Prevention</strong>) to students.<br />

3. The teacher should instruct each student to fill in the section of Worksheet 4 that is<br />

labelled "What's happening?" with some of the problems <strong>and</strong> situations that they think might<br />

cause someone to consider suicide.<br />

4. The teacher should then ask students to share <strong>and</strong> discuss their answers.<br />

5. Next the teacher should distribute H<strong>and</strong>out 3 (Some Situations Precipitating<br />

Adolescent <strong>Suicide</strong>) to each student <strong>and</strong> proceed with discussion of those precipitating<br />

situations not previously discussed.<br />

6. Next the teacher should ask the students to fill in the section of Worksheet 4 that is<br />

labelled "What might he be doing or saying?" with some of the behaviours that they feel<br />

might be warning signs of impending suicide.<br />

7. Have students share their responses <strong>and</strong> discuss them before distributing H<strong>and</strong>out 3<br />

(Causes of Teenage <strong>Suicide</strong>). Discuss any of the causes listed on H<strong>and</strong>-out 3 that were not<br />

previously discussed <strong>and</strong> reinforce key warning signs.<br />

8. Have students brainstorm <strong>and</strong> fill in the sections on coping <strong>and</strong> helping. These may<br />

be retained, discussed <strong>and</strong> added to when the lessons on Active Listening <strong>and</strong> coping are<br />

covered.<br />
