Rangi Ruru Girls’ School is preparing for the regional Barbershop competition on July 29 at The Piano in Christchurch. Barbershop is a style of a cappella singing in four-part close harmony. Director of music at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, Janet Kingsbury, said there’s a camaraderie in barbershop that is unique to the genre. “The girls, who are all heavily involved in a wide range of music genres and groups, have been working together just this year and have really bloomed through exploring the challenges and delights of a cappella singing in the barbershop style.” “There’s a playfulness with the style which is wonderful to watch develop as the girls grow in confidence,” she said. The girls in the quartet – coached by Helen Charlton – are all current or former members of Rangi’s senior choir, Resolutions. Working as a quartet is really exposing and it’s a great way to learn about your voice and see your strengths and weaknesses,” she said. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER New mural to brighten pre-school • By Claire Booker IT’S A CASE of out with the old and in with the new for a mural at Aratupu Preschool and Nursery. The Papanui pre-school’s previous mural, which faced Harewood Rd, was part of the community for 18 years but had to be removed as it had faded and its anti-graffiti coating started to peel off. The new mural has not been designed yet, but it is hoped it will brighten up the currently single-shade wall and help deter graffiti and tagging. Said Christchurch Methodist Mission executive director Jill Hawkey: “Although we’ve not yet decided on a design, it will represent our commitment to the tamariki and whānau that Aratupu works for.” The pre-school has been granted $500 from the Papanui- Innes Community Board to go towards the mural. Board member John Stringer wanted the project to get $1000. “I argued this has been a community asset for almost two decades, paid for by the childcare centre. This $1000 grant was towards something that could last 20 years or more,” he said. Aratupu also plans to develop a new logo, which will be incorporated in the mural. Work on the mural should start later this year. Aratupu is run by the Christchurch Methodist Mission and celebrated its 40th anniversary in March. School’s not studywithus.co.nz for everyone! Workingmen’s club rebuild continues • By Claire Booker WORK ON the final stage of the $12.9 million rebuild of the earthquake-damaged Richmond Working Men’s Club has started. Club president Chris Taylor broke the ground with a ceremonial spade last week before construction workers moved in to start the project. Work will be finished in July next year. The final stage of the construction will be a new function venue that will accommodate weddings, corporate dinners, show events and other functions. The completed complex will have three high-grade squash courts, a new restaurant and bistro, a TAB terminal and game room, and plenty of parking. The first part of the rebuild is finished, so the club is open for meetings and events. Mr Taylor has been the president of the club for the last three years and has been a member of the committee for 17 years. “It’s been a long road, but we’re finally under way,” he said. Cook Brothers Construction won the bid for the construction of the project after going through the robust tender process which was run by the club. The design of the new clubroom was decided by way of input and discussions which involved all club members as well as the committee. The Richmond club, which has been around for more than 100 years, is one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand and it is hoped that the new design will blow its members away. The plan for the club is to secure its future with strong strategies around its food and beverage offerings, with a focus on the local community and perhaps targeting a wider demographic. Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk Stream transformed A QUAKE-damaged stormwater drain in Shirley which runs into Horseshoe Lake has been given a dramatic makeover. The concrete drain, known as Number 1 Drain, has been transformed into a naturalised stream complete with ponds and floating wetlands. The floating wetlands are densely bedded with plants, which will send their roots into the water and take up nitrogen, phosphates and heavy metals, improving the water quality in Horseshoe Lake and the Avon River. City council land drainage manager Keith Davison said the extensive work done on Number 1 Drain, which was one of the concrete-lined waterways worst affected by the earthquakes, has reduced the flood risk for properties upstream in Shirley and improved the habitat for aquatic life. “We did a fish survey prior to the works, and found four fish through the drain system. When we surveyed again recently, we counted 76 fish in just a small portion of the drain so naturalising the drain has clearly improved the aquatic habitat,’’ Mr Davison said.
