PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday July 30 2019 3 News Bus stops to ease schools’ traffic issues • By Matt Slaughter TRAFFIC congestion around Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ High Schools will soon be eased. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has approved three new bus stops at Bridge St, Breezes Rd and Avondale Rd. They will be used at drop-off and pick-up times only. Pegasus Post reported in June on the number of students who drive to school and take up John Laurenson parks along nearby streets. Residents say they sometimes park badly and drive dangerously around the school. Shirley Boys’ High School principal John Laurenson said the new bus stops would hopefully reduce the number of students and parents driving to the school and make the morning and afternoon commute easier for others. “For us, it’s simple enough, we’re just moving children, boys and girls to and from the school more efficiently and in a congested part of the city, that’s a very positive thing.” Said Avonside Girls’ High School principal Sue Hume: “If we’ve got good bus services into school, absolutely we’re encouraging our students to use the transport that’s available.” Just after the campus opened in May, Pegasus Post reported the schools were experiencing teething problems related to the demand for buses and overcrowding in some places on campus. The schools had been working with the city council to improve access to buses for students and Mr Laurenson said the situation has improved. GODWITS SCULPTURE South New Brighton’s long-awaited $89,100 godwits sculpture has had the final sign-off from city council. The sculpture was approved earlier this month by the social, community development and housing committee. It will be installed in a city council reserve near the South Brighton Bridge.
