Youth MP Te Rina has east in mind
• By Matt Slaughter
TE RINA Kotara (standing)
could be the future of politics
in the east.
The year 13 Haeata
Community Campus student
was one of 120 Youth MPs from
across New Zealand who
took part in Youth Parliament
at the Beehive earlier this
month.
Te Rina said before the
two-day event, politics was
an interest, but now wondered
if there was a way she could
make it part of her future
career.
Youth Parliamentarians
functioned the same as elected
members would, they had
opportunities to debate on a
mock Bill, conducted inquiries
in mock select committees and
grilled Ministers in question
time.
Te Rina was amazed at the
diversity of opinions other
Youth MPs voiced at the
event and the passion they
demonstrated.
Reducing
police
numbers
• By Matt Slaughter
A SUBSTANTIAL increase in
officer numbers at New Brighton
Police Station will aim to reduce
crime in the east and Canterbury.
Last Monday, 25 new front line
staff started at New Brighton Police
Station and this number will
grow to 40 soon.
The number of sergeants at the
station will increase from three to
eight and the number of staff in
total from 20 to 60.
Sergeant Jim Currie said the
new police would work alternating
shifts 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. He said they would
patrol all of the areas New Brighton
police had in the past, but
would also respond to emergency
callouts throughout Canterbury.
Said Sergeant Currie: “These
guys, they’re what we call our
emergency response. You phone
111, they’re the ones that come to
the jobs.”
“They’ll be serving the whole of
Canterbury, but they’ll be based
out of here, so you’ll see them
around more often because they’ll
be starting and finishing here, so
you’ll see them more and more
around New Brighton as well.”
Bus stops to ease schools’ traffic issues
• By Matt Slaughter
TRAFFIC congestion around
Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’
High Schools will soon be eased.
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board has approved
three new bus stops at Bridge St,
Breezes Rd and Avondale Rd.
They will be used at drop-off and
pick-up times
only.
Pegasus Post
reported in June
on the number
of students who
drive to school
and take up
John
Laurenson
parks along
nearby streets.
Residents say
they sometimes park badly and
drive dangerously around the
school.
Shirley Boys’ High School
principal John Laurenson
said the new bus stops would
hopefully reduce the number
of students and parents driving
to the school and make the
morning and afternoon
commute easier for others.
“For us, it’s simple enough,
we’re just moving children,
boys and girls to and from the
school more efficiently and in a
congested part of the city, that’s a
very positive thing.”
Said Avonside Girls’ High
School principal Sue Hume:
“If we’ve got good bus services
into school, absolutely we’re
encouraging our students to use
the transport that’s available.”
Just after the campus opened
in May, Pegasus Post reported
the schools were experiencing
teething problems related to
the demand for buses and
overcrowding in some places on
campus.
The schools had been working
with the city council to improve
access to buses for students and
Mr Laurenson said the situation
has improved.
“Between the pair of us, the
different groups, there’s an
acknowledgement there’s a
problem. (We’re) waiting to try
and derive the best solution and
we’re sort of on track as far as
that’s concerned now.”
Said city council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas: “Providing children/
students access to school
bus routes is part of a wider
transport package to support
mode shift and reduce the
number of children who get
dropped off by car. Having
access to a school bus decreases
the pressure on parents to
By increasing the number of
school bus service and actives
modes helps promote modeshift,
decreases traffic congestion
near schools, all of which helps
reduce greenhouse gas emissions
and make our roads safer.”
Mr Laurenson said he was
happy with how things were
settling in at the schools after the
growing pains they experienced
after first opening. “It’s falling
into place really well. We’ve got
a degree of order and efficiency
happening now, so we’re really
pleased with how things are.”
Guts & Grace: Christchurch City
Mission by Geoffrey .M.r. Haworth
The Christchurch City Mission is one of the city’s most respected and
active caring organisations. It was born during the start of the Great
Depression, the last of New Zealand’s Anglican founded city missions.
It took root during a time of social upheaval, as Christchurch came to
grips with the depression, and then with the outbreak of the Second
World War.
Countless Cantabrians have benefitted from the services it provides.
Many hundreds of people have contributed to its teams of volunteers,
or joined its paid staff. Many more give generously to supporting its
operations, sharing its vision, and planning its future.
As the Mission prepares to celebrates its ninetieth birthday, it will
finally tell its story. It is a remarkable story of vision, generosity, daring
experiment, and fruitful partnerships. The City Missioners have all been
people of rare talents and creative energy. They have been served by
many people of strong ability and practicality, united in their dedication
to the purposes of the City Mission.
The Great Successor: The Secret rise
and rule of Kim Jong Un. By Anna Fifield
The behind-the-scenes story of the rise and reign of the world’s strangest
and most elusive tyrant, Kim Jong Un, by the journalist with the best
connections and insights into the bizarrely dangerous world of North
Korea. An irreverent yet insightful quest to understand the life of Kim Jong
Un, one of the world’s most secretive dictators. Kim’s life is swathed in
myth and propaganda, from the plainly silly--he supposedly ate so much
Swiss cheese that his ankles gave way--to the grimly bloody stories
of the ways his enemies and rival family members have perished at
his command. One of the most knowledgeable journalists on modern
Korea, Anna Fifield has exclusive access to Kim’s aunt and uncle who
posed as his parents while he was growing up in Switzerland, members
of the entourage that accompanied Dennis Rodman on his quasiambassadorial
visits with Kim, and the Japanese sushi chef whom Kim
befriended and who was the first outsider to identify him as the inevitable
successor to his father as supreme ruler. She has been able to create a
captivating portrait of the oddest and most isolated political regime in the
world, one that is broken yet able to summon a US president for peace
talks, bankrupt yet in possession of nuclear weapons. Kim Jong Un;
Station opening hours to remain
•From page 1
In spite of the fact that more
police would be in and out of the
station 24 hours a day, Sergeant
Currie said New Brighton Police
Station’s opening hours would
not increase from five days a
week.
Asked why, Sergeant
Currie said:
“I can’t comment
on that
. . . that’s at a
higher level than
Soozie Bragg
my grade.”
However,
Sergeant Currie
said for eastern suburbs, greater
police numbers would hopefully
mean a reduction in some of the
most common crimes affecting
these areas including car thefts,
burglaries and tagging.
“It’ll have that deterrence effect
for some of the minor stuff that
we saw a little spike in . . . hopefully,
it’ll reduce that.”
“They’re just deploying them
into the places that they’re
needed, so that’s why we’re getting
them out here, to help boost
that trust and confidence and
make people feel safe in the community,”
he said.
Aranui resident Bevan
Allington, who Pegasus Post
reported in May, had his caravan
stolen from his driveway, said it
INCREASE: Twenty-five new front line staff started at New
Brighton Police Station last Monday, this number will grow to
40 soon.
had not been found. He hoped
experiences like his would now
be less common.
“The officer that attended my
callout was from Papanui, so
maybe all the Brighton ones were
busy, or there wasn’t enough of
them to get there quick enough,
so maybe in that sense, the numbers
could help.”
South New Brighton resident
Soozie Bragg, who organised the
Save Our Suburbs Community
Safety Expo in March, said
having more police would be “a
great thing.”
“If the little mongrels that steal
things know that there are more
police in the area and that they
are patrolling and that they are
more vigilant, then hopefully
they won’t be quite so keen to
come down this area.”
For the rest of Christchurch,
Sergeant Currie said: “It’s going
to be a boost for the whole city.”
DECISION-MAKERS are
conflicted about the best
solution to keep road-users
and pedestrians safe near the
entrance to KFC and the Z
service station on Shirley Rd.
The Papanui-Innes
Community Board is
concerned the right turn from
Shirley Rd into KFC is holding
up traffic and creating problems
for other road-users.
However, city council staff
say a possible solution raised by
the board to extend the traffic
island on Shirley Rd so it blocks
motorists from turning right
into KFC will encourage
more dangerous driving.
Said board member
Jo Byrne: “If you come
right from Marshland
Rd and swing around, if
someone’s waiting there
to go into KFC, that can
be a bit of an obstacle.”
Ms Byrne said the
board has asked city
council staff to consider
extending the traffic island.
But she said staff had analysed
traffic around the KFC and Z
and found some motorists are
already driving on the
wrong side of the road
for a short distance
after they exit KFC onto
Shirley Rd.
Extending the island
could exacerbate the
problem because
motorists who make
the illegal manoeuvre
would be forced to drive
further on the wrong
side of the road to reach the end
of the island.
“It should be a left turn,
but you know what driver
behaviour’s like, people just
decide they’re going to go the
other way and drive the wrong
way up the road,” Ms Byrne
said.
City council transport
planning and the delivery
manager Lynette Ellis said
many things had to be
considered before a decision is
made on the safest solution.
“This involves looking at past
statistics regarding crashes
gave me a different view on how
other people see things.”
Te Rina said she had east
Christchurch in mind when voting
on the mock bill relating to using
sustainable energy.
“I was thinking about it and I
After, school Te Rina said she
was planning to study engineering
at Canterbury University, but said
Youth Parliament had sparked her
inspiration for the job politicians do.
Te Rina was chosen as a Youth
MP by Christchurch East National
Party member Jo Hayes.
Te Rina said she had loved working
with Ms Hayes, who was now
one of the politicians she looked up
to most along with Jacinda Ardern.
Ms Hayes said the experience
had inspired Te Rina to start a
school debating team and spoke
highly of her passion for improving
low socio-economic areas.
• By Laura Hitchon
A NEW venture to help parents
of newborn babies save money
has opened in Christchurch.
The Canterbury Baby Clothing
Library in Spreydon operates
a clothing exchange system
where members can trade good
quality second-hand baby clothing
for other good quality second-hand
baby clothing items of
a similar nature. Library owner
Jacky Bakker said the library
system loosely worked on a likefor-like
exchange.
Ms Bakker said she came up
with the idea for the business after
buying some expensive baby
clothing for her grandson on an
overseas website and discovered
it was too small, but was unable
to exchange it.
“Babies are constantly growing,
so rather than people
throwing out their old baby
clothes and sending them to
landfill, why not exchange
them,” she said.
In addition to reducing
landfill, Ms Bakker hoped to
make shopping for baby clothes
more enjoyable, affordable and
less time-consuming for new
parents.
Customer and grandmotherto-be
Janice Belgrave said it
was easy to spend $35 on a new
outfit that only ended up being
worn once or twice. “It’s great if
parents are able to recycle and
reuse where possible,” she said.
Christchurch Parents Centre
president Yvette Cundy said a
lot of parents were surprised at
how quickly they went through
clothing and that selling them
online was a time-consuming
process. “The process of putting
items up on Trade Me, listing
everything and waiting for people
to collect the items, it’s just
too hard,” she said.
Ms Bakker said having a baby
was meant to be an enjoyable experience,
but people got caught
up with the image and expense
of it instead of savouring it.
“I get to make contact with
people at the happiest time of
their lives, which is just lovely,”
she said.
Rather than spending a heap
of money on baby clothing, Ms
Bakker believed people should
spend it on what matters, like
car seats, mattresses or good
shoes.
“You can still achieve a cool
look by shopping sensibly,” she
said. Ms Bakker said label clothing
and generic clothing were
treated exactly the same and
what mattered was the quality of
the garment.
“Clothing to be traded must
be free of holes and discolouration
and must have fully functioning
zips, domes and buttons.
“Hats, socks, singlets and
FOR LEASE: The city council is looking for someone to lease the new cafe being built at the New
Brighton hot pools site.
Operator sought for hot pools cafe
THE CAFE being built as part of
the New Brighton hot water pools
complex is up for grabs.
The city council is looking
for a private operator to lease
the space, which will have both
indoor and outdoor seating.
Said city council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel
Cox: “We are looking to lease the
cafe to an experienced operator
with a proven track record in the
hospitality industry and a passion
for providing great food and
customer service. We want the
café to become a real asset for the
area.’’
The hot pools are due to open
early in 2020.
There will be five pools in the
complex, ranging from 25 to 40
degrees in temperature, a cold
water plunge pool and steam and
sauna facilities.
Development Christchurch
Ltd is overseeing the construction
of the multimillion-dollar
facility, which, once completed,
is expected to draw about 75,000
people a year to New Brighton.
DCL chief executive Rob Hall
said contractors had been working
on site since February and
work on the pool complex was
progressing well.
“The hot pools will be a great
boost for New Brighton when
they open early next year.
Alongside our work on the
new playground, public realm
improvements and revitalisation
of the commercial centre, they
will be a catalyst for growth and
activity in the seaside suburb,’’
Medal haul for amateurs
• By Jacob Page
WOOLSTON BOXERS won five
gold medals at the central North
Island amateur championships
in Rotorua.
Coach Holly Sullivan sent her
biggest team ever, with 10 boxers
competing and each coming
home with a medal.
“I’ve been coaching 10 years
and each year I’ve sent a team
from Woolston just to get some
more experience,” she said.
“For me as a coach, it’s
a marker event for me to
assess where my boys and
girls are and whether they are
capable and in the mix for
Canterbury team selections later
in the year.”
Byron Antal won the 80kgplus
junior male class with a
unanimous points decision over
Tauranga’s Te Kehu Kerr.
“I was really impressed with
how (Antal) adapted,” Sullivan
said.
“He threw a few upper-cuts,
which isn’t a common punch for
some reason, and just kept jabbing
against a bigger opponent
and kept scoring points.”
Azury Ormsby won the under-
54kg junior male novice title by
beating Dan Larby, of Gisborne’s
Patu Tahi.
“I was really impressed with
Azury, he just out-skilled his
opponent and it showed in the
fight,” Sullivan said.
Eleven-year-old Bobby Brown
won the under-34kg male cadet
SPORT
title with victory over Rotorua’s
Kauri Hay.
“Bobby is quite strong for his
size and he never takes a backward
step,” Sullivan said.
“He fought a boy who really
wanted to win and you could see
it in the final round, so he did
well.”
Blake Henderson won the
under-75kg elite male title unopposed,
and Neve Enright won
the under-70kg junior novice
title in the same fashion, but
lost on points after stepping up
to fight an opponent with eight
more fights and a 2kg weight
advantage.
Sullivan said Ryley Sutherland
was unlucky to finish runner-up
in the under-50kg male cadet
class after leading his bout for
the first two of three rounds on
the judges’ scorecards.
PEGASUS POST
Tasty Bites
Vegan options can be delicious and easy
Vegan ingredients have flavours and textures that work really well in fritters and sausage
rolls, giving these dishes a real depth of taste
Vegan broccoli, black bean
fritters
Makes 12
Ingredients
1 Tbsp chia seeds
2 Tbsp water
2 cups broccoli florets, roughly
cut
1 400g can black beans, drained
and rinsed
¼ tsp ground fenugreek
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp freshly ground pepper
½ tsp dried oregano
¼ cup fine polenta
Oil for frying
Lemon wedges
Directions
Begin by soaking the chia
seeds in water and set aside so
they thicken. Put the broccoli in
the food processor and process
briefly. Add the beans, seasoning
and chia mixture and blitz to
form a thick paste. Transfer from
the food processor to a bowl and
taste. Adjust seasoning if needed.
Add a tablespoon of polenta
and mix well to combine. Roll
into 12 evenly-sized balls, flatten
slightly and coat in the polenta.
Heat a large, heavy-based fry
pan with enough oil to cover
the base of the pan. When hot,
add the broccoli fritters and fry
until golden (about 5min a side).
Remove and serve with a pinch of
sea salt and lemon wedges.
