INCREASE: There has been an increase in the theft of vehicles
at Westfield Riccarton.
Thieves target mall car park
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
THIEVES ARE targeting
vehicles parked at Westfield
Riccarton.
Police will be beefing
up monitoring of the
area in a bid to “put
a dampener” on the
number of vehicles being
stolen.
Senior Constable Ken
Carter is reminding
shoppers to ensure their
vehicles are locked and
they are parked in well-lit areas
of the mall.
He said there has also been an
increase it vehicles being broken
into and items being stolen.
The thefts are commonly
occurring during weekdays.
Senior Constable
Carter said there was no
“rhyme or reason” as to
why there has been an
increase.
“But it is happening
and we are tasked to
spend more time in
the area to try put a
Ken Carter dampener on it,” he
said.
Westfield Riccarton would not
comment on the thefts, saying it
was a matter for the police.
Concerns over cycleway impact
•From page 1
They are concerned the
cycleway will cause a loss of
residential parking and impact
trees and landscaping.
Mr Greaves said the impact
of the cycleway will be severe
because of the narrowness of the
road. It will be 3.1m wide.
Originally, city council staff
proposed removing about 12 of
the 37 car parks on the street to
make way for the cycleway – but
this was opposed.
Since then, a revised design,
removing 21 car parks to avoid
culling any of the trees, was
approved.
City councillor and
infrastructure, transport
and environment committee
chairwoman Pauline Cotter said
often residents don’t feel listened
to when things don’t go their
way.
“I do feel apologetic to those
people who feel their lifestyle is
being compromised. But there
were absolutely no other options
that were available than to go
down Lochee Rd,” Cr Cotter
said.
She said the issues raised by
the residents are challenging but
the cycleway will be a great asset
to the city.
“We can’t have a cycleway and
Pauline Cotter
a piece missing (on Lochee Rd),
it doesn’t work . . . there was no
other viable option,” she said.
Before giving the cycleway
the green-light, the committee
resolved to make several final
changes to the proposed design
before approving it.
These changes included
placing an alternative route
down Taggart Pl, instead of the
cycleway going from Middlepark
Rd to the Epsom Rd intersection.
But Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
deputy chairwoman Helen
Broughton said she came away
Helen Broughton
from the committee meeting
“really disappointed.”
“I believe they should have
put Lochee Rd to one side and
had further discussion with
residents. They probably could
have come up with something
better.”
A submission from the Greater
Hornby Residents’ Association
described the cycleway as an “illconceived
plan” with no input
from the community taken into
account. Association treasurer
Ross Houliston agreed residents
weren’t listened to throughout
the process.
