TURNING 90 is a milestone
on its own.
Few people get to celebrate
the occasion with the love of
their life for 68 years.
John and Betty Kiddey, of
Aranui, are fortunate to have
done both.
The couple turned 90
just weeks apart, John on
July 5 and Betty on Friday
and they celebrated their
68th wedding anniversary in
March.
They met aged 18 when they
were both working at the
D.I.C department store on
Cashel St.
Said John: “It just happened.
You know the old story, love at
first sight.”
Said Betty: “When you’re
young and you admire
somebody, you think: ‘Oh, I
hope they ask me out’.”

on bid to
slow down
boy racers
in Avondale

A CITY councillor’s call for
action to slow down boy racers in
Avondale has not gained traction.
Last month Pegasus Post
reported Burwood Ward
councillor Glenn Livingstone had
spoken to residents concerned
about boy racers causing carnage
along Waratah St, Briarmont St
and Orrick Cres. But city council
transport operations manager
Steffan Thomas said boy racers are
not an issue for the area.
Cr Livingstone asked for speed
bumps on Orrick Cres but said his
request was turned down as there
is not enough statistical evidence
to suggest there is a problem with
boy racers.
Said city council head of
transport Richard Osborne:
“Council staff have not directly
received any specific complaints
from local residents relating
to boy racers in Waratah St,
Briarmont St or Orrick Cres in
the last 12 months . . . given this
and with no specific budget to do
the work, staff will continue to
monitor the situation.”

Extra classrooms to beat roll pressure

NEW CLASSROOMS should
improve the learning experience
for pupils at Marshland and
South New Brighton schools.
Marshland School will have
four teaching spaces built and
South New Brighton will have
three as part of the Government’s
plan to build a new
primary school and 16 new classrooms
in Canterbury for 1100
extra pupils.
Marshland School principal
Jacqui Pascoe said its roll had
increased from 200, when it first
opened in 2016, to 500.
The four new teaching spaces
will create space for a further 150
pupils at the school.
Mrs Pascoe said extra spaces to
teach and learn were necessary
given the growth in the number
of families moving close to the
school.
“We’re in the middle of
the Prestons subdivision and
across the road is the Prestons
Park subdivision and there’s
just a lot of new houses coming
up and people starting to move
in.”
She said each class at Marshland
School had about 25 pupils
and having more rooms to teach
in would make the school better
for teachers and pupils.
“At the moment, we’re getting
a bit overcrowded, so it’s going
to give them the effect of having
more space.
“There are lots of different
learning opportunities that will
occur as a result of that, that
possibly, if we were overcrowded,
wouldn’t happen.”
South New Brighton principal
Sue Walls said the school’s roll
dropped after the earthquakes,
but people had returned to the
area and pupil numbers were
now at more than 500.
She said more space was
needed.

School would create this and
mean pupils would spend less
time working out of some
“seriously old” classrooms, she
said.
The Government’s plan

involve the construction of a
new primary school in Rolleston
and new teaching spaces at

Chris Hipkins: “We don’t want
to see kids crammed in school
libraries and hallways – this
puts a strain on the teachers and
the students. When parents are
sending their kids to their local
schools, we want them to be
confident that they’re learning
in warm, dry and comfortable
spaces.”

COASTAL PATHWAY SAFETY
Safety concerns at the Tovey St
entrance to the Coastal Pathway
have been addressed. In June, the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board asked city council staff to
trim plants blocking the view on
the blind corner of Marine Pde
before the track entrance. This
has now been done and rails at
the entrance point have also been
modified to allow greater visibility
when crossing.
BROAD PARK FLYING FOX
The Broad Park flying fox is
expected to be operational
within two weeks. Wet weather
has delayed the soil compaction
around the mound. But city
council staff have been working
with a contractor to modify
the existing flying fox structure
to ensure the platform meets
playground safety standards.

MP settles into new
electorate office

LABOUR MP Poto Williams’
new electorate office in
Linwood will officially open
next week.
In spite of Ms Williams
moving from her old
headquarters in
New Brighton a few
weeks ago, she said
an opening event on
August 16 would mark
the completion of the
move.
The office on
level one of Eastgate
Mall sits outside the
Christchurch East
electorate, which Ms
Williams serves and is instead
in the Port Hills electorate.
But Ms Williams said
Christchurch East will continue
to be her main priority and
she hopes Eastgate Mall will
become part of this area when
the electorate boundaries are
reviewed next year.
To New Brighton and other
east Christchurch residents
who are concerned their communities
could suffer because
of her move, Ms Williams
said: “I can understand people
are concerned that not having
a physical presence there
means that my attention is not
there, but that’s not the case, I
mean that is my home patch,
so I’m very, very engaged in
what’s happening there.”
Ms Williams said the
reasons for moving
from her New
Brighton office were
that it was not as
accessible by bus as
it used to be and the
Eastgate office was
near a number of
social service providers,
such as the
Linwood Medical
Poto Williams Centre and Linwood
Library and Service
Centre. “Part of the thinking
was, really, when we get people
who come in who have got
concerns that we can’t necessarily
deal with, we’re able
to hand them over to other
people straight away.”
She said the new office was
also surrounded by much
more economic activity than
the New Brighton office was.
“We think that
Christchurch East deserves
to have some other economic
drivers within its boundaries.”

they haven’t got the data to support

also be admitted as data. It may
not be as measurable as staff would
like it, but it’s still data.”

Betty said the secret to a long
life and happy marriage is “all
in the mind – you’ve got to be
positive about these things.”
This mindset has seen them
rack up a long list of achievements
and overcome adversity.
The couple have lived in east
Christchurch for about 50 years.
They have raised two sons,
Martin and Grant, and have
residents’ information can be

there’s a real problem,” he said.

cancer 20 years ago and the couple
losing their home in Bexley after
the earthquakes.

But John said neither he nor
Betty had let these challenges get
the better of them.
“You can only be positive.
You’ve got to turn around and say
well, ‘this is not going to beat me’
. . . it’s determination,” he said.
“Life’s a thing that when
you’ve got to go, you’ve got to
go, and that’s going to happen
and nothing’s going to stop it, so
you’ve got to enjoy yourself before
it happens.”
John and Betty celebrated their
90th birthdays surrounded by
family.

Students get stuck into
community projects

THE STUDENT Volunteer
Army got to work in and around
New Brighton last Saturday.
About 100 students and 20
community members worked on
more than 10 projects ranging
from maintenance work at
schools and kindergartens to
conservation work at Rawhiti
Domain and South Brighton
Reserve.
The volunteering effort was
part of the SVA’s connect the
community project, which has
been part of its calendar since
2013 and become its secondlargest
event of the year.
Said SVA president Sati
Ravichandiren: “This event,
historically, has taken place a
lot in the eastern side of town,
so this year in New Brighton,
last year in Linwood, previously
we’ve been to Burwood as well.
We tend to go where there are
lots of community groups that
need support getting their
projects and their work done.
“As for the eastern side of
Christchurch, the SVA as a
movement just has a huge legacy
there because of the quakes . . .
for us to be able to go back there
over the years, it’s just about
maintaining that connection and

SUPER RUGBY Referee Mike
Fraser has offered up a few tips
to the New Brighton under-12
rugby team.
They won the experience
through the Specsavers Ultimate
Investec Super Rugby
Referee Training Experience.
They were chosen out of more
than 500 teams from across
New Zealand to meet Fraser
and hear him share his knowledge
and skills of the game.
The team also received $1000,
free eye health checks for each
team member and glasses for
those who require them from
Specsavers.
Said their nominator Kathryn
Woodrow: “The boys display
awesome sportsmanship
and they show their personal
best week after week. My husband
has coached this team for
six straight years from the time
they were five until now.”
The team recently returned
from the Methven Junior
Rugby Tournament, where they
were awarded the Sportsmanship
Cup for their dedication to
excellent conduct while playing
the game they love.
Speaking about the training
session, Ms Woodrow said:
“The boys had so much fun
and we now have some great
drills to keep in our arsenal for
upcoming training sessions.”

The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air we breathe affects our
health and ability to perform. We breathe
in and out approximately 20,000 litres of
air every day. It is therefore very important

process of air exchange to provide the
