Double the reason to celebrate
LONGEVITY: John and Betty Kiddey turned 90 less than a month apart and have been married for 68 years.
• By Matt Slaughter
TURNING 90 is a milestone
on its own.
Few people get to celebrate
the occasion with the love of
their life for 68 years.
John and Betty Kiddey, of
Aranui, are fortunate to have
done both.
The couple turned 90
just weeks apart, John on
July 5 and Betty on Friday
and they celebrated their
68th wedding anniversary in
March.
They met aged 18 when they
were both working at the
D.I.C department store on
Cashel St.
Said John: “It just happened.
You know the old story, love at
first sight.”
Said Betty: “When you’re
young and you admire
somebody, you think: ‘Oh, I
hope they ask me out’.”
City council
puts brakes
on bid to
slow down
boy racers
in Avondale
• By Matt Slaughter
A CITY councillor’s call for
action to slow down boy racers in
Avondale has not gained traction.
Last month Pegasus Post
reported Burwood Ward
councillor Glenn Livingstone had
spoken to residents concerned
about boy racers causing carnage
along Waratah St, Briarmont St
and Orrick Cres. But city council
transport operations manager
Steffan Thomas said boy racers are
not an issue for the area.
Cr Livingstone asked for speed
bumps on Orrick Cres but said his
request was turned down as there
is not enough statistical evidence
to suggest there is a problem with
boy racers.
Said city council head of
transport Richard Osborne:
“Council staff have not directly
received any specific complaints
from local residents relating
to boy racers in Waratah St,
Briarmont St or Orrick Cres in
the last 12 months . . . given this
and with no specific budget to do
the work, staff will continue to
monitor the situation.”
Extra classrooms to beat roll pressure
• By Matt Slaughter
NEW CLASSROOMS should
improve the learning experience
for pupils at Marshland and
South New Brighton schools.
Marshland School will have
four teaching spaces built and
South New Brighton will have
three as part of the Government’s
plan to build a new
primary school and 16 new classrooms
in Canterbury for 1100
extra pupils.
Marshland School principal
Jacqui Pascoe said its roll had
increased from 200, when it first
opened in 2016, to 500.
The four new teaching spaces
will create space for a further 150
pupils at the school.
Mrs Pascoe said extra spaces to
teach and learn were necessary
given the growth in the number
of families moving close to the
school.
“We’re in the middle of
the Prestons subdivision and
across the road is the Prestons
Park subdivision and there’s
just a lot of new houses coming
up and people starting to move
in.”
She said each class at Marshland
School had about 25 pupils
and having more rooms to teach
in would make the school better
for teachers and pupils.
“At the moment, we’re getting
a bit overcrowded, so it’s going
to give them the effect of having
more space.
“There are lots of different
learning opportunities that will
occur as a result of that, that
possibly, if we were overcrowded,
wouldn’t happen.”
South New Brighton principal
Sue Walls said the school’s roll
dropped after the earthquakes,
but people had returned to the
area and pupil numbers were
now at more than 500.
She said more space was
needed.
Three new learning
spaces at South New Brighton
School would create this and
mean pupils would spend less
time working out of some
“seriously old” classrooms, she
said.
The Government’s plan
to improve school facilities
across Canterbury will also
involve the construction of a
new primary school in Rolleston
and new teaching spaces at
Said education minister
Chris Hipkins: “We don’t want
to see kids crammed in school
libraries and hallways – this
puts a strain on the teachers and
the students. When parents are
sending their kids to their local
schools, we want them to be
confident that they’re learning
in warm, dry and comfortable
spaces.”
AWARDS FOR QE II
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board has been
presented with two awards for
the QE II Recreation and Sport
Centre project. One award went to
Apollo Projects Ltd in recognition
of excellence in workmanship,
construction practices and
innovation. RDT Pacific, the city
council and Apollo Projects also
won a Property Council New
Zealand Rider Levett Bucknall
Property Industry Award.
COASTAL PATHWAY SAFETY
Safety concerns at the Tovey St
entrance to the Coastal Pathway
have been addressed. In June, the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board asked city council staff to
trim plants blocking the view on
the blind corner of Marine Pde
before the track entrance. This
has now been done and rails at
the entrance point have also been
modified to allow greater visibility
when crossing.
BROAD PARK FLYING FOX
The Broad Park flying fox is
expected to be operational
within two weeks. Wet weather
has delayed the soil compaction
around the mound. But city
council staff have been working
with a contractor to modify
the existing flying fox structure
to ensure the platform meets
playground safety standards.
MP settles into new
electorate office
• By Matt Slaughter
LABOUR MP Poto Williams’
new electorate office in
Linwood will officially open
next week.
In spite of Ms Williams
moving from her old
headquarters in
New Brighton a few
weeks ago, she said
an opening event on
August 16 would mark
the completion of the
move.
The office on
level one of Eastgate
Mall sits outside the
Christchurch East
electorate, which Ms
Williams serves and is instead
in the Port Hills electorate.
But Ms Williams said
Christchurch East will continue
to be her main priority and
she hopes Eastgate Mall will
become part of this area when
the electorate boundaries are
reviewed next year.
To New Brighton and other
east Christchurch residents
who are concerned their communities
could suffer because
of her move, Ms Williams
said: “I can understand people
are concerned that not having
a physical presence there
means that my attention is not
there, but that’s not the case, I
mean that is my home patch,
so I’m very, very engaged in
what’s happening there.”
Ms Williams said the
reasons for moving
from her New
Brighton office were
that it was not as
accessible by bus as
it used to be and the
Eastgate office was
near a number of
social service providers,
such as the
Linwood Medical
Poto Williams Centre and Linwood
Library and Service
Centre. “Part of the thinking
was, really, when we get people
who come in who have got
concerns that we can’t necessarily
deal with, we’re able
to hand them over to other
people straight away.”
She said the new office was
also surrounded by much
more economic activity than
the New Brighton office was.
“We think that
Christchurch East deserves
to have some other economic
drivers within its boundaries.”
Bid to stop boy racers hits a wall
•From page 1
Cr Livingstone was disappointed
with the decision, saying residents
opinions should be given more
weight.
“They [city council staff] do
admit that there’s an issue, they do
take what we say at face value, but
they haven’t got the data to support
it. I’ve gone to the board and said,
well, we need a way to capture
residents’ information, which can
also be admitted as data. It may
not be as measurable as staff would
like it, but it’s still data.”
Cr Livingstone said city
council staff will come back to
the board with a response on how
Couple have long list of achievements
•From page 1
They were married three years
later at St Andrew’s Presbyterian
Church, which was then located
beside Christchurch Hospital.
Betty said the secret to a long
life and happy marriage is “all
in the mind – you’ve got to be
positive about these things.”
This mindset has seen them
rack up a long list of achievements
and overcome adversity.
The couple have lived in east
Christchurch for about 50 years.
They have raised two sons,
Martin and Grant, and have
residents’ information can be
included in the decision-making
process more often.
Said Mr Osborne: “Staff
will continue to consider all
available information, including
the personal experiences and
wishes of the community, when
investigating and reporting on
requests for service.”
Cr Livingstone said this had
not happened with his request for
speed bumps, even though boy
racers continue to be a concern for
Avondale residents. He said things
need to change. “In the meantime,
residents feel frustrated because
there’s a real problem,” he said.
six grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.
When you add to the mix
John’s sporting exploits as a
New Zealand hockey player,
Canterbury cricketer and
talented golfer, and Betty’s as a
representative netballer, it’s clear
the couple have had a lot to be
thankful for.
However, among the highs,
there have also been lows, with
John going through bone marrow
cancer 20 years ago and the couple
losing their home in Bexley after
the earthquakes.
BURNOUTS: Speed bumps
will not be installed in
Avondale at this stage.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
But John said neither he nor
Betty had let these challenges get
the better of them.
“You can only be positive.
You’ve got to turn around and say
well, ‘this is not going to beat me’
. . . it’s determination,” he said.
“Life’s a thing that when
you’ve got to go, you’ve got to
go, and that’s going to happen
and nothing’s going to stop it, so
you’ve got to enjoy yourself before
it happens.”
John and Betty celebrated their
90th birthdays surrounded by
family.
WHAT’S ‘HOT’ AT HOUSE OF TRAVEL SHIRLEY
LUXURY or UNIQUE??
These two words become a bit blurred in the world of travel and sometimes luxury destinations can be either unique or more
mainstream. It can be hard to determine what luxury means to you or what unique looks like.
After a bit of research and our own day by day experience with our House of Travel clients we’ve
come up with some words that may resonate with you or suit your travel needs…
Luxury is appreciating the “insider” access to castles, cathedrals, galleries, kitchens or homes in a
way that becomes personally meaningful.
Luxury is about exclusivity - having an experience to yourself or with some like- minded travellers.
Luxury is having a seamless, personal service giving an authentic, memorable experience.
Luxury is a great travel experience enjoyed in comfort and style.
Unique can mean distinctive, eccentric, quirky, unusual. All words that can also describe luxury travel.
Many of you reading this today may have travelled around our globe (many times!) and now looking
for something new and different and perhaps a bit luxurious. In our article today we’ve highlighted
a few destinations and products that really offer an experience that will offer you luxury but also a
sense of uniqueness as well.
We hope some of these may inspire you to pop in for a chat about your next adventure abroad.
The team at House of Travel Shirley
Omega-3-PC Fish Oil
It is well known how important omega-3 fatty
acids are to good health. It is estimated most
people don’t even get a third of the recommended
omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis.
Countries with a higher amounts of
omega-3 in the diet are known to have
lower cardiovascular disease and in
many cases better overall health. Recent
research has shown inflammation to
be a big part of disease and the ageing
process. Fish oil can help reduce
inflammation by providing essential
fatty acids required by the body to heal
itself and maintain good health. Fish
oil supplements have become hugely
popular for this reason. Until now
most fish oil only contained omega-3
fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish
however naturally contain omega-3 in
triglyceride and phospholipid form but
until recently the phospholipid form was
lost due to the manufacturing process.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-3-PC sets
new standards in fish oil as it contains
omega-3 attached to both triglycerides
and phospholipids. Studies have shown
NOT all FISH OIl IS CreaTed eQUal!
ONLY GO OMEGA-PC retains the natural Phospholipids that have been shown to be so beneficial for Good
Health BUT are lost in other brands of fish oil due to the less natural manufacturing processes used!
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL!
Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally
contain Omega-3 in a triglyceride & phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process. GO OMEGA-PC is produced using a new more natural cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. Studies show GO OMEGA-PC offers superior absorption with
increased omega-3 fatty acids in organs giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC OFFERS:
• Superior absorption of vital Omega-3, as
shown in research
• Advanced new cold extraction better
preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish
• Naturally contains phospholipids to
support cellular health
• Contains vitamin D3 to support immune,
bone & cardiovascular health
• Supports cardiovascular health - Countries with
a higher Omega-3 intake have much lower rates
of heart disease
• Supports blood circulation, healthy cholesterol &
healthy blood pressure
• Supports joint health, joint mobility & repair
• Supports overall health & wellbeing
• Natural anti-inflammatory - can help reduce pain
Students get stuck into
community projects
• By Matt Slaughter
THE STUDENT Volunteer
Army got to work in and around
New Brighton last Saturday.
About 100 students and 20
community members worked on
more than 10 projects ranging
from maintenance work at
schools and kindergartens to
conservation work at Rawhiti
Domain and South Brighton
Reserve.
The volunteering effort was
part of the SVA’s connect the
community project, which has
been part of its calendar since
2013 and become its secondlargest
event of the year.
Said SVA president Sati
Ravichandiren: “This event,
historically, has taken place a
lot in the eastern side of town,
so this year in New Brighton,
last year in Linwood, previously
we’ve been to Burwood as well.
We tend to go where there are
lots of community groups that
need support getting their
projects and their work done.
“As for the eastern side of
Christchurch, the SVA as a
movement just has a huge legacy
there because of the quakes . . .
for us to be able to go back there
over the years, it’s just about
maintaining that connection and
SENIOR LIVING
GIVING BACK: The Student
Volunteer Army helped
complete more than 10
projects in the eastern suburbs
last Saturday.
continuing to connect there, give
back.”
Mr Ravichandiren said
students and community
members benefited from the
volunteering work.
“They’re really appreciative
of getting those student hands
helping out and providing that
labour. But, more than that as
well, when you meet with the
families who came along and
talking to people who joined
us in the hub afterwards, it’s
great for the students to feel that
appreciation.”
Junior players special visitor
SUPER RUGBY Referee Mike
Fraser has offered up a few tips
to the New Brighton under-12
rugby team.
They won the experience
through the Specsavers Ultimate
Investec Super Rugby
Referee Training Experience.
They were chosen out of more
than 500 teams from across
New Zealand to meet Fraser
and hear him share his knowledge
and skills of the game.
The team also received $1000,
free eye health checks for each
team member and glasses for
those who require them from
Specsavers.
Said their nominator Kathryn
Woodrow: “The boys display
awesome sportsmanship
and they show their personal
best week after week. My husband
has coached this team for
six straight years from the time
they were five until now.”
The team recently returned
from the Methven Junior
Rugby Tournament, where they
were awarded the Sportsmanship
Cup for their dedication to
excellent conduct while playing
the game they love.
Speaking about the training
session, Ms Woodrow said:
“The boys had so much fun
and we now have some great
drills to keep in our arsenal for
upcoming training sessions.”
SENIOR LIVING
Kidney, bladder and
urinary support
A healthy urinary system is needed to
filter and remove waste and excess fluid
from the body. Each part of the urinary
system (kidneys, bladder, ureters and
urethra) works in harmony to drain urine
from the kidneys and escort it out of the
body. If the kidneys’ ability to filter the
blood is seriously damaged by disease,
wastes and excess fluid may build up in the
body. The critical regulation of the body’s
sodium, potassium and acid content is
performed by the kidneys. The kidneys
also produce hormones that affect the
function of other organs. For example,
a hormone produced by the kidneys
stimulates red blood cell production.
Other hormones produced by the kidneys
help regulate blood pressure and control
calcium metabolism. Urinary tract
infections occur when germs enter the
urinary tract and cause symptoms such
as pain and/or burning during urination
and more frequent need to urinate. These
infections most often affect the bladder,
but they sometimes spread to the kidneys,
and they may cause fever and pain in your
back. Not all kidney disease produces
symptoms although some signs there may
be a kidney problem are: puffiness around
eyes, swelling of hands and feet, more
frequent urination - particularly at night,
difficult or painful urination, high blood
pressure and blood in the urine.
Nature’s Sunshine JP-X is a powerful
all natural herbal formula that has been
formulated to support the bladder, kidneys
and provide relief from urinary infections.
The herbs naturally support: improved
digestion, liver function, increase
circulation to promote healing, stimulate
urine flow to flush out toxins, shrink
swollen tissues and reduce inflammation,
neutralise acidity, relieve pain and support
sexual function. JP-X is recommended to
help arthritis, cystitis, diabetes, diarrhea,
dyspepsia, dysuria, edema, gallstones,
gastritis, gout, incontinence, kidney
infection/inflammation, kidney stones,
liver problems, nephritis, prostatitis,
rheumatism, urinary dysfunction, and
urinary tract infection/inflammation and
high blood pressure.
Collagen
the body’s youth protein
Collagen is the primary protein in the
body. It is a major component of skin,
hair, nails, muscles, tendons, ligaments,
joint cartilage, bones, gums, teeth, eyes,
and blood vessels.
In fact collagen is the primary
structural component for all tissue
in the body, providing the strength
and resilience associated with youth,
beauty and wellness. The body’s natural
collagen production decreases with
age resulting in many signs of aging,
such as flaccid skin, wrinkles, ligament
and tendon injuries and aching joints.
Collagen supplementation is one of
the most fundamental things a person
can do to prevent premature aging and
promote youthful vitality.
NEOCELL are the industry leaders
in research on collagen supplementation.
Through advanced research they have
perfected a way to hydrolyse collagen and
effectively reduce its molecular weight this
improving the absorption of collagen into
the blood stream by over 90%.
A clinical study on NEOCELL
COLLAGEN has shown skin hydration to
increase an average of 21% and up to 50%,
with 92% of test subjects experiencing
firmer, softer skin. Most people taking
NEOCELL COLLAGEN reported seeing
visible improvements within two weeks.
Collagen supplementation provides
the nutrients necessary to support the
body’s collagen supply. It can help reduce
fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin
elasticity, support building of strong bones
and teeth, strengthen the nails and hair,
and is vital for muscle growth, It also
assists weight loss by helping burn fat
for energy, promotes wound healing by
supporting the regeneration of healthy
tissue as well as help support overall
health.
NEOCELL COLLAGEN and further
Educating locally for lifelong connection
Do you remember the days of knowing your
neighbours? In this digital age, building
local connections creates lifelong anchors
for our children. Whether it’s bringing the
community into the classroom, or making
classroom learning relevant for the real
world, Shirley Intermediate has - since
1934 - been a core part of the wider Shirley,
Richmond and Dallington communities.
With a major building programme
coming, and the move (to next door) of
Growing global citizens at St Joseph’s
youth ambassadors from China visiting the
school. Principal Aaron Richards explains
that the strength of the programme lies
in immersing students in a culture that
is different than their own. This enables
students to develop an understanding
that cultural diversity is not limited to just
doing things differently, it is more about
thinking differently. Learning this concept
PEGASUS POST
early enhances attitudes such as tolerance,
open-mindedness and inclusion. It also
strengthens students abilities to engage
with and communicate with people from
different cultural backgrounds. It is my
hope that this experience will be a catalyst
for the students who in the future could
be leaders in New Zealand's international
trade Industry.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2020
A world-class education and
supportive learning environment
Every parent wants to ensure their child
is receiving the best foundation for their
academic future. Selwyn House School
offers this through small class sizes, deep
core learning, talented teaching staff all set
within a nurturing environment and an
extensive range of opportunities.
Selwyn House offers the International
Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Programme (PYP) and is proud to be a
leading STEAM focused school. We not only
encourage our girls to work in advanced
STEAM fields, we want our girls to lead
them. Our STEAM Hub provides every
student from Year 1 to 8 access to stateof-the-art
equipment. In Mechatronics,
girls learn the foundations of mechanical
and electrical knowledge. Robotics is
introduced as an interdisciplinary, inquiry
based learning programme drawing mostly
on mathematics, science and technology.
Learning is also enhanced by additional
opportunities including Future Problem
Solving and the 2020 Space Camp trip
where 24 girls will travel to the United States
to attend a week long Space Camp.
A supportive all-girl learning environment
encourages girls to take risks without fear
of failure. As the girls progress they are
confident in their abilities, understanding
that perseverance helps them grow. A
school-wide buddy programme provides
each girl with support and mentoring.
Learning is personalised
and each teacher has the
time to foster authentic and
meaningful relationships.
Strong relationships
between the class teacher
and family ensure each girl’s
learning journey is nurtured
by a partnership of support.
Teachers construct learning
activities to help each girl
identify their personal
strengths.
Selwyn House believes
these strengths can be
applied to academic tasks
and become more powerful
with the acquisition of skills
and knowledge, aiding
intellectual development
and academic achievement.
For this reason core
learning in reading, writing
and mathematics is a
priority. Specialist teachers
in Spanish, Mechatronics,
Art, Science, Physical
Education, Swimming, Performing Arts and
Music work with classroom teachers to help
identify the strengths of every girl.
The environment at Selwyn House
empowers each girl to embrace their future
and develop a love of learning. A Selwyn
House girl will learn to define herself,
accept responsibility, form opinions,
and have compassion for the world.
This combination of achievement,
confidence, and character makes
a Selwyn House education a powerful
and transformative experience.
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Are you struggling with the heat of
Summer or wanting to get organised for
Winter? With the ever changing weather
patterns, heat pumps have the flexibility
of being able to heat and cool which is an
advantage no other appliance can offer. This
represents great value for your investment
as you can use it all year round. The team
at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you
cool this Summer either at home or work.
Enviro Master supplies, installs and services
all the leading brands including Panasonic,
Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means
our team can show you which system and
brand will best suit your needs.
With new regulations coming in for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
now is a great time to beat the 1st of
July deadline. Inadequate heating and
ventilation can lead to mould growth and
dampness in your property, leading to
costlier maintenance and an unhealthy
living environment. Providing a fixed
heater with a higher heat output and lower
running costs, like a heat pump, will enable
your tenants to heat the area effectively.
It will also discourage them from using
unflued gas heaters which can make a
house damp and mouldy.
It is important to remember, when
selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s
warranty does not cover the installation
and consumers could be responsible for
any repair or damage caused to the system
due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s
five-star installation guarantee ensures
correct installation, and a demonstration
so customers have an understanding on
how it will best meet their needs.
For a free in home consultation, call
Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our
showroom at 41A Shakespeare Rd,
Waltham, Christchurch.
The importance
of air quality
The quality of the air we breathe affects our
health and ability to perform. We breathe
in and out approximately 20,000 litres of
air every day. It is therefore very important
to ensure good air quality indoors through
adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the
process of air exchange to provide the
necessary air quality that meets the needs
of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low
oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes
stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel
drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like
a high content of dust and tobacco smoke
are harmful and can cause various diseases.
Even bad smells can cause discomfort or
irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s
easy to open windows for cross ventilation,
however as winter approaches, we start to
shut up out houses to trap in the heat and
as a result, air quality can decline.
Ventilation includes both the exchange
of air to the outside as well as circulation
of air within the building. It is one of the
most important factors for maintaining
acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.
Filtered air supply for summer and filtered
and warmed air in winter creates a healthy
environment in which to live and work. In
case of poor or insufficient air intake from
outside, the oxygen content decreases,
humidity and dustiness levels increase. If
exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is
not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity
and harmful substances are not removed.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required air exchange for your
building requirement. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
can also provide innovative solutions
tailored to differing requirements.
