The 40th anniversary of Arts in the
Alley will feature a different form of art
not featured at the event before - singing.
Inspired by national singing competitions
like “The Voice” and “American Idol,”
“The Voice of Grove City” will give local
artists the opportunity to display their
vocal talents in front of a live audience
during Arts in the Alley, said Trent Soles,

“The idea was inspired by how the Arts in the Alley
has encouraged so many artists and crafters for over
40 years, and the one art form we hadn’t awarded yet
is music, which is a unifying art form loved by everyone,”
he said.
To enter the competition created by the Grove City
Area Chamber of Commerce, contestants must fill out
an online form found at voiceofgrovecity.com and submit
a video featuring the contestant’s vocal abilities.
There are no restrictions on residency; however,
contestants must be 13 and older.
A panel of judges will review the submitted videos
and select 25 contestants to advance to the first of
three live rounds.
The first live round will be held Sept. 20 at the First
Baptist Church of Grove City, 3301 Orders Road,
Grove City. The first round will be open to the public,
with a cost of $5 per individual to attend.
From the first round, judges will select a minimum
of 10 performers who will move on to compete during
the second round on Sept. 21 at Arts in the Alley. A
minimum of five contestants will then move on to compete
for a $2,500 prize in the final round of live judging
Sept. 22 at Arts in the Alley.
Both the second and final rounds are open to the
public and free to attend.
Organizers are still determining times for each of
the rounds and will update the event website once
finalized.

excitement in our community,” said Marilyn Reiner,
events manager for Grove City Area Chamber of
Commerce. “This is our first attempt, so we’ll grow
from this and it will be something that will be great for
Arts in the Alley.”
The competition also will provide a valuable experience
for those pursuing a music career or who have an
interest in entering other future competitions, she
said.
“It will be a great learning experience for those who
want to get a taste of what competing is like so they
can be a little bit more prepared and confident,” Reiner
said.
For Soles, who presented the idea to the chamber
board, it is an opportunity to share some of what he
and his family has learned with others looking for the
same experiences.
Trent’s son, Blake Soles, who is serving as emcee
and co-producer, has entered several contests on a
national level, including “America’s Got Talent,” “X-
Factor,” “The Voice” and “American Idol.”
In fact, Blake’s original song audition aired on
national television in 2014 on “American Idol,” and in
a span of two years, he won local Ohio competitions
such as “The Voice of Ohio.” He later served as a mentor
and traveled the state performing at festivals with
the top 10 finalists from “Ohio Idol.”
Those experiences gave Soles and his son an insider’s
perspective on the positive outcomes a vocal competition
like “The Voice of Grove City” can provide, he
said.
“Blake and I loved being able to encourage other
singers through these often rigorous competitions that
could easily become a bad experience for them,” Soles
said. “With a little encouragement and instruction,
they could learn something to empower them to use
their gift for encouraging others, too.”
This year’s Arts in the Alley event will take place

Fine arts competition
As a feature of the 40th annual Arts In the Alley event held
Sept. 21-22, a fine arts competition will take place in City Hall in
the Town Center. In addition to cash awards for top three places
in professional and amateur divisions, cash awards will be made
for people’s choice and best of show. A special award, the easel
award, will be made for the best depiction of life in Grove City,
past, present and/or future. The city will purchase the winner for
its permanent collection. Artists may enter the competition on
Wednesday, Sept. 18 and Thursday Sept. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. in
City Hall. There is an entry fee for each artwork. For more information

The 100 percent, 30-year tax increment
financing agreement would address some
of the area’s infrastructure needs, according
to city officials. Tax increment financing
agreements subsidize companies by
refunding or diverting a portion of their
taxes to help finance development or pay
for infrastructure improvements near the
development area. The public infrastructure
improvements may include improvements
to public roads and water and sewer
lines.
The measures were approved despite
opposition from some area residents.
“Not one resident has testified in favor
of this development,” said David Hellard.
The Orders Road resident said the roads
are unsafe and the added traffic generated
by the development would not help matters.
According to the development plan,
there will be three access points to the
homes — one from Haughn Road, one from
Orders Road and one from Discovery Drive
near the Grove City YMCA and Fryer
Park. The access point near the YMCA was
a point of concern.
Doug Stickel, director of the Grove City
YMCA, said this would bring more congestion
to Discovery Drive.
“This is concerning for our members and

said that access point was chosen because
it is an intersection with a traffic signal. He
also said there will be improvements made
to Discovery Drive.
“We want it to become a street, especially
if the YMCA were to expand,” said Stage.
The mayor also said there is developable
land to the south so that street would be
needed as a connection for future growth.
Overall, Stage said, infrastructure needs
will be addressed.
“We are going to upgrade Orders Road
as part of the TIF package,” said Stage.
“We will have a better Haughn Road, a better
Orders Road and a better path to the
YMCA. There are winners in this.”
According to City Administrator Chuck
Boso, the TIF agreement is expected to
generate approximately $43 million in
seven years. He said the city would receive
about $12 million for Orders Road improvements.
Construction on the development is
expected to begin in the fall of 2019. Once
the TIF funding starts to come in, the
infrastructure improvements would begin
though that may be a few years down the
road.

Scott and Cam McComb, the children of the late banker and civic leader Tiney M.
McComb, unveil the placard placed outside of City Hall in his honor during the
Homecoming Celebration on July 26. McComb, a native of West Virginia, was named
the recipient of the 2019 Service Above Self Award by the Grove City Rotary, joining
past recipients Leslie Bostic and Sherol Saxton Mulligan. Rotary President Scott
Molino said Tiney and his wife, Helena were renowned throughout the community
for their giving spirit and the love they had for their adopted hometown. He added
that McComb was recognized for the award for his support of organizations such
as the Ohio 4-H, Sertoma International, Osteopathic Heritage Foundation and his
involvement as director emeritus of the American Red Cross of Greater Columbus.
McComb and his wife were also heavily involved with the founding of the Grove City
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Arts in the Alley Festival.

With the start of the new school year
approaching, officials with the South-
Western City Schools District welcomed
incoming kindergarteners to
Harmon Elementary for the third annual
Kindergarten Kick-Off. According to
Melvina Tobert, the district’s coordinator
of state and federal programs, the
mission of kick-off is to help the new
students familiarize themselves with
the layout of the elementary schools,
learn lunch line protocols, and get a
glimpse of what they will be learning in
the classroom. Here, incoming Richard

kick-off were allowed to choose
between five to ten new books to read.

Future educators travel to
learn from top educators
During summer break, Dr. Valerie Jones, Teacher Education Chair and
Dr. Jeanne Bruce, Associate Professor, traveled with five pre-service educators
to Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden to study the top-two
school systems in the world. The group was able to tour a Finnish grade
school to observe their curriculum and instruction and speak with students
and teachers. In Sweden, they visited a university and learned about
Swedish high schools and transitioning to higher education.
The pre-service educators were significantly impacted by what they saw
and learned. Makayla Harr (’20), Adolescence to Young Adult Math
Education major, remarked, “I loved that the schools not only promoted academic
success but encouraged creativity and prioritized life skills and the
arts as much as academics. Their education system focuses well on the individual.
Their students had choices in electives starting at a young age, and
some were accelerated in their strongest subjects, and I loved that.”
Dr. Jones added, “This learning experience was the first of many for our
department. We learned much and plan to spread what we’ve learned to
other educators through conference presentations and workshops.” Next
spring, students will be able to have another learning experience in England,
Ireland, and Scotland.

Patricia McBride-Demetriou, a Columbus, Ohio native, will be opening
a studio in Grove City that offers acting and modeling classes and caters to
youth who are interested in a career in the entertainment industry. Patricia
began a 30-year career in film and television with a national commercial for
Diet Dr. Pepper, along with roles in the hit TV show Martin and King of
Queens. Patricia taught acting to kids when she lived in Los Angeles and
started a drama acting camp at a Beverly Hills Country Club.
Patricia wants to welcome students ages 7 - 16 years to her new acting
program called Acting/Modeling City Kids, which will begin September 5,
2019.
Classes are fun and affordable. Students will learn improvisational
skills, character development, self-confidence, stage-confidence and more.
Modeling classes consist of etiquette, walking/posture, how to work the
camera and more. Classes are between 4-6 weeks in length and include a
class showcase on the last day of class for family and friends to come and
enjoy. AM City Kids programs help to support the nonprofit organization,
LifeSmart Education, which provides life skills education to underserved
youth.

Experience teamwork while building athletic skills
Grove City Parks and Recreation is registering participants
for fall indoor youth volleyball leagues
through Aug. 30. Kids will experience teamwork, learn
the skills and fundamentals of youth volleyball.
Registration must be completed in person 8 a.m. to 5
p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Kingston Center,
3226 Kingston Ave. Each participant is registered as
an individual and assigned to a team.
Leagues are available for grades three through 12
in the following divisions: junior (grades 3-4), intermediate
(grades 5-6), middle (grades 7-8) and senior
(grades 9-12). Girls and boys compete together.
Practice starts the third week of September for the
Warrior Spirit Karate first opened in October 2011 with a
handful of students and the vision to become the essence of
what the martial arts was historically.
Sensei Don Mathews, with nearly 35 years of experience
competing and teaching, has the passion to pass on his extensive
knowledge and expertise to his students. He is accomplished
in a variety of the martial art techniques, having trained
with some of the most accomplished and recognized in the
martial arts. With an eye toward maintaining the true traditional
history and teachings, Sensei Mathews immerses his students
with not only the technical teachings, but the rich history
junior division, early October for all others. Games
begin in late October with an eight-match season followed
by a tournament. The cost is $60 per player, $65
for non-residents, and includes a team T-shirt.
Registration forms must be signed by a parent or legal
guardian.
Volunteer coaches are needed; submit an application
to the parks and recreation office. Player and
coach application forms are available online.

Classes bring police and community together

Have you ever wondered what it takes
to be a police officer? Do you question decisions
officers make? If the answer is yes,
maybe the Grove City Police Academy is
for you.
“This is a way to let community members
understand what the police do and
why,” said Tom Durflinger, the police community
relations supervisor for the Grove
City Division of Police. “It’s a chance to
interact with us in a non-enforcement
way.”
The citizens police academy started in
2011. The division of police is currently
enrolling for the 12th session of the academy
that will begin Sept. 17.
Durflinger said there was a lot of community
interest and participation when the
academy was first introduced but since
then involvement has fluctuated.
According to the police department, the
purpose of the citizens police academy is to
provide educational information regarding
the division of police, its mission and activities.
Residents of the city of Grove City or
Jackson Township can sign up to gain a
better understanding of police work while
officers can gather input about community
concerns.
“It gives them a different perception,”
said Durflinger. “It’s eye opening.”
Durflinger said participants get to tour
the police station as well as the radio room.
They see and handle some police equipment
and get to drive in a drunk driving
simulator. Participants also get an
overview in laws, crime prevention and the
criminal justice system.
Grove City resident and former educator
in the South-Western City Schools
District Jeri Kerns participated in a Grove
City Citizens Police Academy and enjoyed
it so much, she decided to become a member
of the police academy alumni association,
where she has been president for the
last three terms.
“I felt an appreciation for what they go
through,” said Kerns.
Once someone graduates from the academy,
they can become a member of the
alumni association if they choose to do so.
According to Kerns, the alumni group has
41 active members.
“We are looking for viable volunteers,”
she said.
Kerns said the primary goal of the alumni
association is to support the Grove City
Division of Police. They also participate in
community watch programs.
“We provide an extra trained eye,” said
Kerns.
The alumni association meets once a
month at various locations throughout the
city, like the Grove City Welcome Center
and Museum, Scioto Grove Metro Park and
Mount Carmel Grove City.
“We like to show everyone what our
community has to offer,” said Kerns.
As president of the alumni association,
Kerns will speak to participants in the
academy about membership opportunities.
According to the police department,
enrollment in the citizens police academy
is not designed to further employment
opportunities within the criminal justice
profession. It is designed to improve community
and police partnerships.
The Grove City Citizens Police Academy
will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and
Thursdays at the Grove City Safety
Complex, 3360 Park St. Classes begin Sept.
17 and the academy will run for about six
weeks.
There is no cost. Applicants must be a
Grove City or Jackson Township resident
and be at least 18 years old. Applications

numerous bicycles, tools, electronic equipment, clothing
and monies over the course of several months.
The bicycles are of various types and models, as are
the tools and electronic equipment. All properties are
held in a secured police facility at all times. If you
believe you have claim to any of the property and have
proof of ownership for the property, you may call the
Grove City Police Department Property Room at
614-277-1757. A review and release of any and all
property is by appointment only. All items not claimed
will be sold at public auction, turned over to the Law
Enforcement Fund, or destroyed according to Ohio
