NEW CEO CONFIRMED
FOR DARWIN PORT
Gangways delivered to
Sydney cruise terminal
Specialist cargo vessel Helvetia delivered two
giant new gangways to Sydney’s Overseas
Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay.
Arriving fully assembled, the new
gangways were unloaded by crane and
installed at the Overseas Passenger
Terminal wharf.
The two huge gangways — seaport
passenger boarding bridges — have been
built to better support visits from cruise
ships including Quantum class vessels able
to carry more than 5000 passengers.
They are expected to improve the
terminal’s operational efficiency, increase
capacity and allow for quicker and
easier embarkation and debarkation for
passengers.
The Overseas Passenger Terminal reports
visits from more than 200 cruise ships a
year and is managed and operated by Port
Authority of New South Wales.
According to Port Authority of NSW,
1.6m cruise passengers transit through
Sydney’s two cruise terminals each year:
the Overseas Passenger Terminal and White
Bay Cruise Terminal.
A new chief executive has been
confirmed for Darwin Port, with
leaseholder Landbridge Australia
announcing the appointment of
Darren Lambourn.
He replaces Terry O’Connor who
announced his resignation earlier in
the year.
In a statement, Landbridge
noted Mr Lambourn had “a wealth
of experience” in supply chain
operations, most recently working
as general manager Bunbury for
Southern Ports Authority.
Mr Lambourn is to be responsible
for overall operations and
management of Darwin Port and
to report directly to Landbridge
Australia managing director Mike
Hughes.
Mr Hughes noted Mr Lambourn’s
extensive experience while also
paying tribute to his predecessor.
“On behalf of Landbridge, I would
like to thank Terry [O’Connor] for his
significant contribution to Landbridge
and to Darwin Port,” Mr Hughes said.
AMSA announces North-East Shipping Management Plan
A completed review of the North-East Shipping
Management Plan - covering the Great Barrier Reef, Torres
Strait and Coral Sea regions - was released by the Australian
Maritime Safety Authority.
Commonwealth and Queensland government agencies
developed the NESMP together with industry and key
interest groups in 2014 to reduce the effects of large
commercial ships in these waters.
AMSA chief executive Mick Kinley said the waters off
the north east coast of Australia were some of the most
environmentally sensitive sea areas in the world.
“To date, the NESMP has formed the basis of a national
strategy to minimise the effects that shipping has on our
unique marine environment,” Mr Kinley said.
“So far, we have focussed on implementing measures to
enhance ship and navigation safety, reduce the impacts on
marine mammals, address biosecurity risks, expand special
protection measures for our most sensitive sea areas and
establishing a pollution response fund.”
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the plan
would ensure vital international trade continued in the most
environmentally sustainable manner.
