TRAFFIC SIGNS and road
markings continue to confuse
people in the district.
The intersection of State
Highway 73, Dawsons and
Chattertons Rds in West Melton
is baffling motorists who say
there are too many different
signs.
Motorists also appear to be
confused about where they can
park outside The Famous Grouse
Hotel after the district council
removed two parks on Gerald St
last year to improve safety at the
pedestrian crossing.
The West Melton intersection
features four different speed limit
signs, a no entry and two stop
signs.
West Melton resident Cherryl
Davis called it a “mess of signs,”
which has been confusing her for
quite a while.
“Navigating that intersection is
extremely confusing, especially
if you’re from out of town,” she
said.
Mrs Davis took to Facebook
to share her frustrations on the
West Melton Community Page.
Within a day, there were more
than 30 comments on the post.
One comment said the stop
sign was difficult to see. “It gets
hidden by the lamp post with the
100 sign on it. If you don’t use it
often I could easily see why you
could miss the stop or only see it
at the last minute, especially as
there are so many other signs in
your view,” it said.

ROAD SIGNAGE continues to be a source
of confusion in the district.
We’ve reported on the issue before, and
we have more again today.
New concerns have been raised on
the West Melton Community Page on
Facebook (see page 1).
The district council says 68 traffic management plans are
submitted to the council each month, a reflection of the large
amount of development.
So mistakes can happen. But some things just don’t add up.
Take the two former car parks outside The Famous Grouse
in Gerald St, Lincoln. They are car parks no more for safety
reasons. But people still park there because the white car park
lines remain. A reasonable defence if the constabulary decide to
issue a ticket.

Former mayor to
stand again in elections

A CONTEST has begun with
former mayor Bill Woods
announcing he is running for
the top spot in October’s local
body elections.
Mr Woods and Mayor Sam
Broughton are the only two currently
running in the race with
nominations closing this Friday.
Mr Woods said he’s excited to
be running and looking forward
to campaigning again.
“It’s going to be a challenge for
the people of Selwyn to decide
whether to replace one of the
country’s youngest mayors to
one of the oldest.”
The 76-year-old was the second
ever mayor in the district
and served one term from 1992-
1995.
He unsuccessfully ran against
Mr Broughton in 2016 and
received 1352 votes.
Mr Woods said it was the
recent rate hikes that led to him
deciding to run again.
“The council is out of control
and it needs somebody to bring
it back into line, that person is
me,” he said.
The first thing he would
change is to put the elected
councillors back in control of
things, he said.
“Township committees, hall
committees and community
committees are taking away
people’s rights and I would like
to give that power back.”
Mr Woods said he will be
campaigning on splitting the
district in two for rates purposes.
“That means the major populous
area would be one and the
rural area would be another.”

CRASH PAIR HOSPITALISED
Leeston chief fire officer Lloyd
Clausen said the volunteer brigade
was called out to a Leeston Rd
crash at about 5pm on Friday. Two
people were in the vehicle which
had been driven into a ditch. Mr
Clausen said they were able to
rescue the pair without needing
to cut the vehicle open and they
were transported to hospital in a
moderate condition.
MOBILE LIBRARY
The district council’s Edge
Connector service is up and
running. It is designed to bring
library resources and services to
communities that aren’t within
easy reach of one of the district’s
libraries. The vehicle has Wi-Fi
and computers as well as a printer
and scanner. The service will begin
in the next few weeks.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS
The district council is offering six
$3000 scholarships to year 12 and
13 high school students to pursue
their passion and aspirations
beyond school. Those who have
overcome barriers or hardships
to achieve are also encouraged to
apply. Applications close at the end
of September.

Leeston dump
station ready
this week

THE LEESTON community is
celebrating the installation of a
long-awaited wastewater dump
station.
It was installed in Station St
and will be up and running this
week.
Leeston Community
Committee chairman Lloyd
Clausen said they first brought
up the idea 10 years ago.
“We’ve been trying for ages
to get one and the idea is that it
will, hopefully, be just another
point of call for motor caravans
to stop and have a look around
Leeston,’’ he said.
The station is part of the work
started from the $267,800 the
Government awarded the district
council last year in round
two of funding from the Tourism
Infrastructure Fund.
The other projects include new
dump stations in Tai Tapu, Lake
Coleridge and Glentunnel. In total,
the stations will cost $90,000.
The community committee
requested the dump station as
part of the district council’s
2017-2018 Annual Plan.
Glentunnel’s new dump
station should also be operating
this week.
Business success earns Chile trip

ALLI KENNEDY has
dreams of being the boss of a
mega-corporation one day.
“I remember, probably 10
years ago, I asked my dad how
to make the most money, how
to become rich and he said you
start a business. That really stuck
with me,” the 17-year-old Lincoln
High School student said.
Alli was eight-years-old when
she first thought of owning a
business when she grew up.
“It just went from there. I got
into high school and started
taking business studies and
realised it was the path I want to
go down.”
The year 13’s potential as a
budding entrepreneur has been
recognised by national business
leaders.
She has been selected as one of
eight students to travel to Chile
in October after competing in
the Entrepreneurs in Action
business competition last month.
She was chosen to compete at
the competition in Wellington
from the 4000 participants in
the young enterprise scheme
across the country.

both challenges at the event,
winning each member a total of
$7000 from Massey University
SKILLS: Alli Kennedy is going to Chile after a team she was
in successfully won the Entrepreneurs In Action business
competition last month.
and the trip to Chile.
On the trip, the students will
learn about local culture and
business and meet local entrepreneurs.
They will experience site visits
to established companies and
start-ups and they will work
with local students on business
challenges.
Going to Chile will really
help to build on her business
skills, Alli said.
“At the business competition,
I discovered the importance of
knowing the culture of a company
when working in business.
I think working with students in
chile and businesses there is really
going to improve my skills.”
Alli is also a part of the Lions
Foundation Young Enterprise
Scheme through Lincoln High
School.
Her team’s business Suck It
Straws created designer stainless
steel straws to reduce plastic.
They won the YES regional
marketing award last month.
Starting her own business and
seeing it succeed was a great moment,
Alli said.
“Being able to work with a real
business in school and seeing
what it’s like to work with people
and having success has been
really fun.”
Alli said all of this has led
to her deciding business is the
career for her.
“I’m going on to study entrepreneurship
and strategy at
Canterbury University next year
to get a Bachelor of Commerce.
“I’m excited to be going down
that path with my tertiary studies
and then, hopefully, after that
I’ll be getting experience and
eventually, I’ll own a business.”

district council to improve
confusing road
signs.
He said road
works in the

riddled with
mistakes, such
as the wrong
speed limit
signs.

recently had a 100km/h
sign in an 80km/h zone.
The sign was kept up for
three days before being
changed to the correct
80km/h.

Petition under way in a
bid to improve safety at intersection

WEST MELTON residents
are taking their fight for safety
improvements on a controversial
intersection to Parliament.
The West Melton Residents’
Association is collecting signatures
for a petition to urge the
Government to approve funding
for immediate action on the State
Highway 73 and Weedons Ross
Rd intersection.
So far the
petition has
more than 650
signatures.

Schurr said they

after proposed improvements
to the intersection were pushed
back.
“As a committee, we figured
that is not good enough and we
started looking at the options of
what we could do to cast a light
on the situation,’’ he said.
“Our only hope is to keep putting
a spotlight on this because
nobody else in Canterbury is
going to do it. It’s up to us and a
petition is one of the ways we can
do that.”
CAMPAIGN: The West Melton Residents’ Association is
collecting signatures for a petition wanting immediate action at
the intersection of State Highway 73 and Weedons Ross Rd. ​
Selwyn MP Amy Adams has
also been advocating for an upgrade
of the intersection and said
she supports the petition.
“A member of the residents’
association met with me a few
months ago and sought my advice
on how she and other West
Melton residents could continue
to raise the profile of this issue,”
she said.
Mrs Adams will personally
deliver the petition to Parliament
in November.
“I am very supportive of the
petition and have shared it on
my Facebook page in order to
encourage local residents and
concerned road users to sign it.”
The residents’ association has
been campaigning for more than
10 years for something to be
done about the intersection.
“That whole roading corridor
was due to be updated from
Yaldhurst right through to Aylesbury
and part of that upgrade
included the intersection,’’ Mr
Schurr said.
“That all changed last year,
budgets were adjusted and the

withdrew the project. We were
left without a plan.”
It was revealed last October
that safety improvements at
Weedons Ross Rd and SH73
weren’t included in the NZTA’s
National Land Transport Programme
for 2018-21.
The improvements had been
recommended for inclusion in
both the 2018/21 Regional and
Land Transport programmes.
NZTA figures show there have
been 11 crashes at the intersection
since 2006. One was serious
and 10 were minor or didn’t
cause injury.
NZTA director regional relationships
Jim Harland said the
intersection didn’t meet the new
threshold for funding under the
investment assessment framework.
“Using this framework, it was
assessed as a medium crash risk
and safety alignment, with a low
benefit cost ratio,’’ he said.
Mr Schurr said he hopes
the petition leads to traffic
lights being installed at the
intersection.

Delay over
quarry information
INFORMATION requested from
Fulton Hogan over its application
to open a quarry in Weedons has
been delayed.
The district council and
Environment Canterbury had
requested information on the
volume of groundwater which
would be extracted from the
quarry, bird strike mitigations,
and an update on draft
conditions.
Fulton Hogan has also
been asked to provide more
information on how its mobile
processing plant will be used.
The information was due back
on Friday but due to ECan and
the district council asking for
further information on traffic,
noise and landscape, Fulton
Hogan has more time.
The information will now be
released on August 16.
Weedons Residents’ Association
committee member Simon Moore
said it’s a continuation of the
process bending over backward
for the applicant.
“It’s just another example of
‘we’ll give you whatever time you
want to get yourself sorted out,
don’t worry it’s not a problem and
again no consultation with those
affected.”

international swimming
competitions as a

How did this all start for you?
Both my children were swimming
at Halswell and the club
asked me to help out.
When I joined the Swimming
Canterbury West Coast management
committee in 2005, I
joined because I felt I had skills
that were valuable and the other
members of that committee were
all qualified referees at the time.
They ran junior carnivals so I
started helping them and I felt
if they were going down to help
that I should go as well because I
was on the committee.
When did it start to become a
serious pursuit?
That was when I started refereeing
at national competitions
and that’s when the international
opportunities started. It’s really

grown on me.
I first qualified as an inspector
of turns in 2005 but when
I started refereeing nationally
that’s when I really started to
gain a passion for what I was
doing. We are there to make sure
the swimmers have a fair and
equal opportunity.

to the swimmer so if there is any
doubt you have to be 100 per cent
clear on what you saw before you
disqualify someone.
I’m one of six FINA registered
officials in New Zealand and I’m
incredibly proud of that achievement.
Each term is four years and
I just got another four year
term which started this year.
It’s a form of validation to get a
second term, like you’re doing
something right.
Reaction time is important
because the speed and touch at
which the swimmers are turning,
you do really need to be on
your game. The age of 65 is the
cut-off age and that makes sense,
you have to give younger people
an opportunity.

have to be at the top of your game
because there’s a lot going on but
to be that close to the best swimmers
in the world is a real thrill.

that when you started out 15
years ago?
Absolutely not, I came into
this relatively late in life, I wasn’t
a competitive swimmer, and I’ll
be the first to admit I’ve sort of
done things backward to get to
this point.

Do you have future goals that
you would like to achieve?
Obviously the Olympics next
year would be great, but since
I’ve just been to World Champs,
the chances that I’m selected for
that might not be high.
How come?
Speaking with other officials at
South Korea, the feeling was that
if you were picked to officiate at
the World Championships that
you wouldn’t be picked to go to
Japan next year.
That’s only the perception, we
haven’t been told anything official
but if that’s how it pans out then
I’m absolutely fine with that. I
have an idea of who may go from
the six of us (in New Zealand)
and if my feeling is correct then
that person deserves to go and I’ll
be very happy for them.
I’m absolutely fine with
how things have turned out,
it was just the talk of the people
in Korea that if you’ve done a
World Champs this year that
the Olympics may go to
someone else and that seems
logical and I’m comfortable with
that.
I would love to do something
every year but all six of us will
get an equal opportunity over
the next four years.

Yes, I’m there to observe what
the swimmers are doing and
report any infringements but
I’m certainly happy when there’s
nothing to report.

highlights?
Being honoured by
Swimming New Zealand as
Technical Official of the Year
in 2014 and then the Sport
Canterbury Sports Awards
in 2016 was a real highlight as
well.
Are your children still
involved in the sport?
Holly swam at Jasi Swim
Club when she was at high
school and university and
now she does open water
swimming while my son
Ashley does iron man
competitions so they’re still
involved in their own way.

business comes
to Darfield
Yard Supervisor Steve James will attend to

the establishment of a new company in Darfield,

company offers firewood and coal direct to the public.
Sales and Transport Manager and Darfield local
Mark Wisdom says the business is an energy
company supplying to the industrial and domestic
markets. The company has spent the last few months
developing the depot, complete with dry storage,
offices and a public weighbridge, on Creyke Road
just outside the township.
Mark says “We also plan to add a landscape
supplies service to the public and currently have
railway sleepers in 1200 mm lengths and Paparoa
Red Rock available in three grades - - 4 mm, 12.25
mm and 25 mm plus”.
The depot is open to the public and also offers a
delivery service around the Selwyn District for all coal,
firewood and landscaping orders.
Sourcing firewood that is split and dry is a yearly
concern for homeowners. Mark says Birchfield
Energy and Resources has 5000 cubic metres of
beech firewood available for immediate sale. Beech is
ideal for wood burners as it is a hardwood with a long
burn time and is clean with little spark.
“We have a years worth of wood ahead of us that
is clean, dry, split and ready to burn. Our truck can
deliver one bulk load or two four cubic metre loads
where customers in the same area could share
delivery costs.”
Birchfield Energy and Resources offers West Coast
sub-bituminous coal with low ash, low sulphur –
which provides clean burning. Coal is available from
the Creyke Road depot in 20 kg bags for the average
consumer or half ton bags for those that live out of
town or have larger storage capacity. Half ton bags
can be loaded as is or dumped loose onto a trailer.
The large public weighbridge, that is located within
the depot, caters for all sized vehicles from cars with
trailers to truck and trailer units.

Ellesmere show class in the wet

wet conditions helped Ellesmere
earn a 15-0 win over the
Cantabrians at Springston on
Saturday.
Their Tane Norton Cup
campaign will continue against
Canterbury Maori in Kirwee
on Saturday. Canterbury Maori
beat North Canterbury 21-14 in
the other competition game.
Tries to Ellesmere centre
Cameron Hay and wing James
Wilkins proved vital, while
Ashton Mulloy added a penalty
to help them ease past the
Cantabrians, which were made
up of Christchurch-based club
players.
It was a confidence boost
for the new-look team, which
are preparing for their annual
Southbridge Shield game against
North Canterbury in a fortnight.
Team manager Michael
Sheat said the wet and muddy
conditions made the game “a bit
of a dog fight at times,” but there
were plenty of positives to take
away.
“I thought our lineout was
much-improved on the first-up
performance and we got some
dominance at scrum time too,”
he said.
“When you’re faced with
conditions like that, it can be
easier to play without the ball at
times.
“I thought we adjusted well
and got our kicking game
going and really tried to control
territory as much as we could.”
Sheat said the performance
was a big improvement on
their loss to Mid-Canterbury
the previous week, and their
defensive energy was much
better.

especially when they were under
pressure at times, was very
pleasing.”
Sheat said he expected

forward pack, which will look to

“We’ll certainly look at some
film during the week to see
how (Canterbury Maori) went,
but I know they have a number
of players on the fringes of
Canterbury B, so they’ll be a

a 24-12 loss to the Ellesmere
Keas in the curtain-raiser to the
senior match at Springston on
Saturday.
The Keas were a composite
side of Ellesmere club players,
which aimed to give the colts
a test before their Southbridge
Shield game against North
Canterbury in a fortnight.
Team manager Dave Beatty
said the colts did well to race
out to a 12-0 lead, thanks to two
tries from halfback Tyler Power.
However, once the bigger Keas
forward pack started to get their
hands on the ball, they started to
dominate the game.
“They used a lot of one-off
runners and pick-and-goes and
the physicality was a big step up
for us.
“Overall, I thought we put in
a respectable performance in
conditions that did not suit us.”

THE SELWYN United Red
and White Stripes finished
11th in the under-13 age-group
at the Futsal Club World
Championships in Florida.
The team won their opening
pool game but were beaten in
their next three games before
finishing the tournament with
a confidence-boosting 6-0 win
over Ethiopian club side Jinka.
Coach Ben Lapslie said he felt
the team could have finished
higher but conceding goals at the
wrong time cost them when it
mattered most.
“I said to the boys before our
last game that we needed to
make a statement and prove that
we belong with the best teams
here,” he said.
“We played well in patches
up until then but we put it all
together against Jinka, which
was good to see.
“That’s tournament football, if
you don’t turn up one day, then
you put yourself behind and
that’s what happened to us after
our first win.
“I felt like we could compete
with any team there but we made
some errors, which cost us a
higher place finish.”
Lapslie said the team have
had a busy six months after they
won the Australasian qualifying
tournament on the Gold Coast
in January.
“The boys will now take a term
off futsal just to refresh and we’ll
see where they go from here.”
Lapslie, who is also a national
futsal player, said he enjoyed
coaching on the big stage.

“The newspaper was the
hardest part,” Charley said.

caught them off guard.

Extra! editor Tricia Rowe was
pleased the event went smoothly.
“The year 7 and 8 group were
really lively, which made the
quiz go fast,” she said.
“The lead-up to the event has
been stressful, with balancing
writing papers and writing the
quizzes, but I’ve got a really good
team.”

in Education publication for
primary, intermediate and
junior secondary school pupils.

AS I SAID in my last column,
we’ve travelled to Italy so Vittoria
can meet the family. And what a
journey it’s been.
Before we even left, Vittoria
caused her parents a heap of stress
with her first ambulance trip to
the emergency department, starting
on a course of antibiotics for
pneumonia, setting us back a day
on doctor’s orders.
It sounds bad, and it wasn’t
ideal, but it was all okay apart
from unsettling our sleep patterns.
So we were lucky, our pre-dawn
flight on Saturday went swimmingly.
Vittoria was happy to nap,
draw or watch cartoons all the
way to Brisbane where we stayed a
night with my sister-in-law Sarah.
The only niggle was that she
leaked on me because her nappy
was askew but, like for most parents
I think, that’s a non-event.
It looked like either the antibiotics
or time were working a treat
on Vittoria, so we were quietly
confident going into the 14-hour
leg to Dubai on Sunday night.
And again, it went pretty good.
Fourteen uneventful hours.
Arriving in Dubai we were all
tired, dishevelled, probably smelly
and definitely over trying to sleep
in an aircraft seat with a fidgety
toddler. Between us and relaxation,
were only four hours in an
airport and a six-hour flight. Easy
right? Spoiler alert – no.
Our luck ran out 20 minutes before
boarding started for our flight
to Venice when Vittoria vomited
all over the floor in the middle
of a packed terminal. And a little
on my shirt and shoes. Honestly,
what’s the protocol for that?
I just floundered in surprise for
a bit until Laura went into nurse
mode and sent me off to clean
Vittoria up while she “dealt with
it” in the splash zone.
Once we were as “fresh” as possible
and a suddenly exhausted
toddler crying in my arms, we
made our way to the gate where
we were told we could get Vittoria
checked up for free at the airport
clinic and wouldn’t miss our flight.
However, once the “ambulance”
arrives (literally a push trolley)
we were told that a full check at
the clinic might make us miss our
flight – great.
With all the vitals coming back
healthy, and Vittoria totally out to
it asleep, I was offered a difficult
choice; do further checks and
miss the flight or sign a waiver
saying “refused treatment” and
that if it gets worse it’s all on you.
Although I was confident to
sign away and just get to the flight
so we could be done with it, I felt
terrible anyway. So for three long
and stressful hours of the last flight
we thought of all the worst things
it could be – dehydration, gastro,
some sort of never-wake-up disease.

Feasting on kawakawa leaves

ANYONE WHO knows
kawakawa, or Piper excelsum,
will be familiar with the holey
nature of its leaves.
The main herbivore causing
damage on these peppery leaves
is the native kawakawa looper,
Cleora scriptaria. The moths
are found throughout the year,
but mostly in the hotter months
throughout the North and
South Island.
The moths are extremely
variable in size and colour, but
often have a 30-55mm wingspan
and are brown in colour. The
wings have scalloped edges and
have a distinctive spot in the
middle of the forewings.

The fully developed larvae
then descend to the leaf litter on
a silk thread and pupate close to
the soil.
Interestingly, herbalists like to
use the holey kawakawa leaves
rather than the undamaged
ones, as the damage caused

Selwyn Libraries Edge Connector
service hits the road
A new library service bringing popular programmes and resources to those who don’t have easy
access to a library had its first outing last week.
Residents of Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass were the first to try out the Council’s new Edge
Connector service in its specially kitted out vehicle.
The service is designed to bring targeted library resources, programmes and services to communities,
schools, pre-schools and community groups not within easy reach of one of the district’s four libraries.
Its main focus is on communities 15 kilometres from a library.
Community Services and Facilities group manager, Denise Kidd, says the service has been
designed to be cost effective, efficient and flexible so it can bring things the whole community
want, but would otherwise be difficult to access. “We want to make sure those communities
across the district without easy access to a physical library have similar opportunities to others,
whether that’s through education on our online resources or bringing a specific programme that
caters to a group of residents of the particular community.”
It is expected regular visits to communities such as Windwhistle, Springfield, Dunsandel,
Southbridge, Hororata, Greendale, Glentunnel and Sheffield will begin in the next few weeks.
Other visits are being planned as the service assesses the needs and interest levels in particular
communities, and continues to work on logistics and opportunities.
The Edge Connector is fitted with wifi, computers, a touch screen online catalogue, printer
and scanner. It will bring a selection of books, magazines and DVDs along with tech kits that
can include microscopes, telescopes, robotic kits and entry level VR equipment, which can be
browsed or borrowed.
It will also be able to carry resources such as a 3D printer and sewing machines to allow for
specific programmes.
The newly purchased vehicle has a focus on cost effectiveness and environmental sustainability
with the electronics powered by two auxiliary batteries that charge while the van drives, or by a
solar panel on the roof. It also has low energy LED lighting and furniture designed to maximise
space, with reading spots for children and adults.
Council supports Selwyn students to advance in life
Council is offering scholarships for up to six senior local high school students to pursue their passion
and aspirations beyond school.
Applications for the tertiary scholarships have opened for year 12 and 13 students who live and study
in Selwyn and are planning to undertake full-time post-secondary school education or training at a
recognised New Zealand university, polytechnic or training institution next year.
The scholarships of up to $3000 will be available for students from Darfield High School, Ellesmere
College and Lincoln High School who have achieved outstanding success in academic, sports, cultural,
arts, social responsibility or other areas. Those who have overcome barriers or hardships to achieve are
also encouraged to apply.
The scholarship provides payment towards fees and costs associated with the purchase of books and
equipment required for their study or training.
Council Community Services and Facilities Group Manager Denise Kidd says the scholarships are
intended to help local young people pursue their dreams.
“The Council recognises that it benefits all of us when we encourage the outstanding young people we
have. These scholarships are not limited to academic achievements, but are open to supporting local
senior students who have achieved success in sports, culture, arts pursuits or who have represented us
well despite the obstacles in their way.”
Applicants can include a statement of support from a teacher, school coach or other person who is
relevant to their application such as a regional or national coach.
Applications close at the end of September and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed as part of the
selection process. Council will liaise directly with schools before making its final decision. Successful
applicants are expected to be announced at the end of year school prize giving awards.

Community helps shape Kirwee
Reserve extension
A community-led project is helping to create an exciting new
recreation and sports hub for the Kirwee area.
Working alongside the Council, a community working party
has been gathering ideas and input from residents, sports clubs
and organisations to plan a major extension to the Kirwee
Recreation Reserve.
The project will add 6.5 hectares to the reserve, and provide space
for additional sports fields, recreation areas and community facilities.
Proposals include realigning one of the rugby fields, adding a
second junior field and providing a second dedicated cricket oval.
A new open space area will be set aside for off-leash dog exercise,
along with walkways and fitness trails, a BMX/Pump track and
informal play areas.
A central community area will be developed with seating, picnic and
barbeque areas, playground, a basketball half-court and amenities
including public toilets. Additional car parking will be included.
Council property and open space planner Derek Hayes says the
proposed extension, guided by community input, aims to provide
for both active and passive recreation, and will help meet growing
demand for sports and community space.
“The extension will be a huge asset to Kirwee, with additional
sports capacity, recreation areas and facilities that will serve the
community as a central hub now and into the future.”
Residents are invited to view the plans and provide feedback
throughout this month. A drop-in session will be held on Saturday
24 August, at the Kirwee Reserve Pavilion. Residents can view the
master plan and provide feedback at selwyn.govt.nz/kirweereserve.

A round of employment speed dating has helped Selwyn teens with
opportunities for work.
The Council organised event at the end of June saw 29 year 12 and
13 school leavers meet with 12 employers in a speed-dating style
event, with Council staff matching up those who indicated interest
in talking further.
A month on its already opening doors for students and their parents.
McClenaghan Contracting owner Hamish McClenaghan says the
company was impressed by the calibre and motivation of the young
people and had already given one teen a week’s work experience
over the school holidays in their landscaping team.
“The team really enjoyed working with him and said he had good
aptitude. He sent us an email afterwards thanking us and he will
probably be back next holidays for us.”
They are hoping to take on two other students from the day for
experience and had made an unexpected connection with a parent
through the day, he says.
“The mother of one of the students we interviewed now works with us
two days a week. She came to talk to us and said from her daughter’s
conversation we sounded like a great place to work. Her daughter is
one we will probably try and get in over the holidays or summer, along
with another student from out Darfield way.”
Sicon Ltd has also been in touch with two students aiming to
provide them with work experience over the summer.

A new playground has been installed at
Weedons Reserve and will be open for use

The $72,000 upgrade includes a new fort,

The Kugels play Klezmer
Malvern residents have a unique
opportunity to enjoy the unique sound of
Klezmer music on Thursday, 29 August,
when a Wellington band named The
Kugels will perform at Trinity Church
Darfield.
‘If you have experienced “Fiddler on
the Roof”, you have already had an
introduction to the culture around
Klezmer, the celebratory folk-music idiom
of the Jewish people’, explains Philip
Baldwin, Chair of the Malvern Community
Arts Council. ‘Four prominent NZ soloists
have a love for this music and play
traditional Klezmer, along with original
compositions by accordionist/NZ Arts
Laureate Ross Harris.’
The band features the highly expressive
sounds of violin, clarinet, accordion and
bass, supplemented by the multi-talented
performance of Debbie Rawson who
sometimes trades her clarinet for soprano
sax, bass clarinet, or the Maui Xaphoon.
Rounding out the band are fiddler
Robin Perkins and bass player Jaqueline
Norden.
Klezmer originally grew out of music
for Jewish celebrations, dances, and
weddings. Samples of the Klezmer
repertoire abound on Youtube.
Sponsored by NZ Arts on Tour, The
Kugels toured NZ to widespread acclaim
in 2016, and are travelling again this year,
demonstrating the huge appeal that
Klezmer has for a variety of audiences. As
part of the concert, the musicians provide
commentary which is informative,
entertaining, and engaging.

skill for this music at Trinity Church

Senior A
Netball
The Ellesmere College Senior A team are attending
South Island Secondary Schools netball tournament
which is being held in Nelson, 2-5 September. The
tournament involves over 80 school teams and more
than 1200 players, coaches, managers and umpires.
Ellesmere College has competed in this event for
many years now in B grade which is the middle pool
of the competition. Previous teams have placed as
high as 4th in B grade but to be able to move up
you need to place in the top 3 of your grade. Last
year was where the magic happened, we placed
3rd overall in B grade which gained us the spot in
A grade for the 2019 SISS tournament. This is the first
time any Ellesmere team has been in A grade which
is a huge achievement on its own.
This year our team consists of young exciting
talent as well as older more experienced players
which we believe is a perfect make up of a team.
Our Captain Janaya Clark, Vice-captain Emily
Skilling, Emily Carter and Ione Dennis make up our
leadership team. These girls are about to compete
in their third SISS tournament which is something
special in itself and for Janaya and Emily this is going
to be their last. The experience and talent these
players bring to court will be so important this year
especially because we are leading such a young
team. These four are fortunate to be joined by
the exciting new talents of year 12 Merryn Wellby,
year 11's Amber lemon, Lana McCartin and Emma
Johnson and finally our year 10's Ella Gibson and
Mikayla Lemon. The inclusion of these players into
our team brings a whole new skill level and vibe to it
which we all love being a part of.
Playing in super reserve on a Wednesday allows
our team to build together and make a connects
on court weekly in the build up to the tournament.
Week to week we see the improvements in our team
as we are really starting to work together and form a
unit which has actually resulted in us beating top of
the table two weeks in a row.
This year we are also so lucky to have the return of
our amazing, knowledgeable, fun loving coach Jan
Roberts. The knowledge, passion and determination
Jan has for netball is amazing. The team are very
fortunate to have Jan as their coach again this year.
Joining Jan is Assistant coach, Anna McCormick.
Anna was a member of the Ellesmere college senior
A team for many years, captaining it in 2016 and
being involved in the SISS tournament herself. Having
someone who is experienced with the tournament
as well as being extremely knowledgeable about
netball will be a huge asset to the team. We are also
fortunate to have the return of our super manager
Susan Stewart who has been involved with this team
for numerous years. Susan does an amazing job
whether it is making sure we always have handy
towels to wipe away the sweat, continuing to fill up
the lolly bag, making sure we get to places on time,
being our tournament mum and just being there to
support us all. Maree Lemon will be accompanying
the team as their umpire. The continuous support she
shows towards our team is truly outstanding and we
are so grateful. The amount of times she has helped
us out by driving the van to and from our game as
well as being the amazing umpire she is doesn't go
unnoticed. Rounding off the support team is Sarah
Anderson; our staff rep. Sarah has a love of netball
and our team are very excited about her being able
to come with us.
Lastly, we need to say a massive thanks to our
amazing sponsors. Travelling to tournament is a huge
expense so your support is great appreciated.

30g spinach
Juice of ½ lemon

3 low-calorie tortilla wraps, cut
in half

Serves 4
Prep time 5min
Cooking time 30min
Ingredients
Low-calorie cooking spray
1 large onion, sliced
450g chicken breast (skin and
visible fat removed), diced
3 garlic cloves, crushed
400ml water
3 Tbsp curry powder
1 Tbsp ground turmeric
1 Tbsp tomato puree
Sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
To serve (optional)
Samosas (see previous recipe)
Cooked rice
Ingredients
Spray a large frying pan with
low-calorie cooking spray and
place over a medium heat.
Add the onion and cook for
2min until softened slightly,
then add the diced chicken to
the pan and cook for 5min until
browned.
Add the garlic to the pan and
cook for 1min, then add all the
other ingredients. The water
should just about cover the
chicken – you may need a little
more or less depending on the
size of your pan.
Leave to simmer gently for
20min.
Turn the heat up and boil the
curry for another 5min, stirring
frequently to ensure it doesn’t
catch on the bottom of the pan,
this will reduce and thicken the
sauce slightly.
Serve the curry with your
choice of accompaniment.
Tip: This curry recipe works
well with lean diced lamb (all
visible fat removed) too.

High build quality for Toyota RAV4

IT HAS TO be said – Toyota has
really upped the ante with its new
RAV4.
I remember writing about the
interior of the previous generation
model, referencing the hard plastic
trim and low grade materials
which formed the cockpit.
That has all changed, the new
RAV4 is a quantum leap, premium
linings have been used,
soft-touch surfaces have been
included, and the layout of the
controls is comprehensive but
simplistic to understand.
All this from a model which
isn’t graded as high-specification.
This evaluation surrounds the
GXL model which still gets cloth
seat trim – yet I believe these are
the seats for Christchurch. Every
morning the RAV4 was in my
care the temperature was below
0 deg C and freezing. It was nice
to get into the relative warmth of
cloth as opposed to leather.
The 2019 RAV4 lands in eight
variants. I evaluated the rangetopping
hybrid in July, and
reported that it was the most
sensible model in the series. However,
there are petrol-only models
for those who don’t want to go
down the hybrid road. There are
three models with 2-litre engines
driving through the front wheels
only, and two 2.5-litre all-wheeldrive
variants – the GXL and
Adventure.
The GXL 4WD lands at $41,990
($48,990 Adventure), which to
me represents good buying and,
as my introduction suggested, it
is now a car which borders on the
luxury car class such is its build
quality and drive comfort.
A lot of the latter has to do with
a brand new platform, the RAV4
is totally fresh from the ground
up, and it’s something Toyota has
put a big effort into. Well, when
the car you are marketing sits
in the one of the busiest market
segments, then it has to be good
to compete.
Yes, the mid-size sport utility
market is crowded, but the RAV4
has a healthy reputation and solid
grounding.
Under the bonnet sits a revised
version of the four-cylinder

and, I guess, that’s what Toyota
was thinking of when it included
an Adventure model into the
range. It has body kits and an
interior colour contrasts which
are vivid and striking.
I’m due to evaluate it soon and
from what I’m hearing it is the
go-to model. Just as well, then,
Toyota has a RAV4 for all tastes.

West Melton Country Fete
In April the West Melton Country Fete was attended by over 5000 people from across the district.
The Fete hosted two international food courts, over 100 stalls, a large kids entertainment area
and all of the great fun you’d expect at a local fete like ‘dunk the teacher’ and a petting zoo.
Run by the Friends of West Melton
School (FoWMS) the Fete was generously
supported by a number of local companies,
of note were Gold Sponsors McLenaghan
Contracting, Ray White West Melton
and Your Section / Wilfield. Through this
amazing support and a lot of hard work
FoWMS were able to raise a massive $40,000
they could use towards school upgrades not
funded by the Ministry of Education.
During the July school holidays two
outdoor areas were upgraded, the first
project created an outdoor classroom space
with decking and seating outside the Ti
Kouka Block. The work was undertaken by
Chris Fifield Building Ltd – a local builder
whose three children attend the school.
The second project was an extension of
the playground area previously built using
funds from the 2017 Fete. This extension
includes a slide, tussock garden and wooden
amphitheatre that can be used as an outdoor
learning space.
This project was undertaken by local
company McLenaghan Contracting who
have supported the school in numerous
ways for over 30 years. Andy and Carol
who founded the company in 1989, sent
all four of their children Jeremy, Hamish,
Simon, and Kylie to West Melton School.
Now Kylie’s daughter Amelia has joined the
school – her first day at the start of Term 3
this year.
Both contractors went above and beyond
expectations, using their skills and resources
to make the outcomes more incredible than
imagined. FoWMS wish to thank everyone
who attended or sponsored the Fete and
look forward to seeing the community use
these new spaces for years to come.

Seeing stars at West
Melton’s observatory
Stargazing has been a fascination for
humans since time began. For centuries,
stars guided sailors to their destination,
and they were also used to create early
calendars. But it wasn’t until the early 17th
century, with the invention of the telescope
by Dutchman Hans Lippershey, that stars
could be observed more closely than just
with the naked eye.
As telescopes improved, astronomers
were able to explore further into the
depths of space, until today, when highly
sophisticated telescopes allow us to see
not just the Milky Way, but many more of
the billions of galaxies that make up the
Universe.
For local stargazers, the Canterbury
Astronomical Society’s RF Joyce
Observatory in West Melton offers the
opportunity to observe the wonders of
the night sky every Friday night from the
end of April through to mid-September.
The observatory is equipped with five
fixed telescopes and a number of portable
telescopes, and the dark site has the benefit
of minimal light pollution, which is
supported by the Selwyn District Council’s
light pollution control policy.
Doors open at 7.30pm and the
evening starts with a brief talk about the
observatory and its history, followed by a
description of what people are likely to see
that night, and a health and safety briefing.
“We usually get 80 to 90 people coming
each time,” says CAS membership
secretary Simon Lewis. “Tickets can
be purchased through the Eventbrite
website.”
The Canterbury Astronomical Society
(CAS) is a charitable organisation and
funds raised through these evenings are
used to run the observatory.
CAS has a strong relationship with
Canterbury University and organises
lectures on the third Tuesday of the month
at the university.
“These are free and open to the public
and cover a range of academic and
scientific topics,” Simon says.
The society also has a relationship with
NASA, which brings its Stratospheric
Observatory for Infrared Astronomy,
SOFIA, a Boeing 747 aircraft, to
Christchurch every year to observe celestial
bodies in the Southern hemisphere. During
its stay, the public have the opportunity to
go on board and see the infrared camera
and other equipment.
CAS welcomes new members and

an education programme, monthly
members’nights and social events. For

Start cultivating soil in preparation
for early spring plantings
by ‘chopping up’ and digging in
green manure crops you sowed
in early autumn such as lupins, to
improve the organic matter.
Raise the level of new vegetable
gardens 100-120mm above the
existing ground level as drainage
will be improved and soil temperatures
will rise quicker in early
spring.
Flowering annuals
Winter flowering annuals
should still be blooming beautifully,
especially cineraria’s that
are at their best in late winter/
early spring. Where new plantings
are required, plant ‘potted’
colour. Try alyssum, calendulas,
cornflowers, larkspur, lobelia,
pansies, snapdragons, stock and
wallflowers.
Fruit trees
It’s cropping time for many
citrus, mandarins, lemons, limes,
navel oranges and grapefruit.
Seminole tangelos that appear
ripe on trees are not sweet
enough to eat until October/November.
Pip and stone fruit trees benefit
from a final copper oxychloride
spray so they are in a healthy state
for the new growing season. Remove
all pruning’s and old leaves
from the home orchard.
Feijoas can now be pruned
as they often flower early in
spring, and thin out thick tangelo
growth to allow light to penetrate
through the plant, increasing fruit
production.
Strawberries
Have already commenced
actual growth, remove all old and
diseased leaves. In warmer areas,
flowers will appear very early. Ideally,
remove all flowers at least for

Roses
While the plants are dormant

Lawns
In most parts of New Zealand,
there is little significant grass
growth in August, however, it is
just around the corner. Use this
time to deal with problem areas
in the lawn where it is not too
wet. Installing drainage coil in
wet parts of a lawn can make a
significant difference for next
winter.
Ornamental trees and
shrubs
Site preparation is critical
before planting. Do not plant in
areas that are extremely wet unless
you are planting specimens
that specifically grow in wet soils
e.g. swamp cypress, kahikatea.
Add compost to all planting sites
and cultivate thoroughly prior to
planting. Allow sufficient space
between new trees and shrubs for
their full development.
Container gardens
With careful planting and planning,
containers should continue
to provide colour and interest
throughout August. Replant
where necessary with ‘potted
colour’. Before planting new flowering
annuals in spring, empty
the containers, thoroughly check
that drainage holes are adequate,
clean carefully and fill with new
container mix.

Identifying the square metre rate

The square metre rate (sqm) is the
average cost of building each square metre
of a house; calculated by dividing the total
build price by the home’s total square
metres.
Sqm rates are not standard across
all parts of a house with building costs
varying between rooms. Garages cost
considerably less than utility rooms like
kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries so
choosing high quality appliances and more
features can ratchet up the build price.
The cladding chosen is also relevant. A
quoted sqm figure is likely based on brick
veneer, the cheapest form of cladding,
followed by plaster finish then cedar.
Building a smaller house does not
necessarily translate to a lower sqm rate.
Certain costs are incurred regardless of the
size of home. You still need an electrical
switchboard and the same number of
building inspections. The cost of drainage,
hot water cylinder, garage door, and
telephone and electricity connections will
not differ significantly between larger and
smaller houses. Building consent fees do
vary with the size of house.
Sqm figures are therefore guides,
influenced by the features specified and
type of build. The standard sqm figure
quoted by a building company is generally
based on construction of a standard
house on a fully serviced section, on good
ground.
Ground conditions determine the
type and cost of foundations. If building
on TC1 land the foundations are more
affordable than on TC3 land. Ease of
connection of services like electricity and
the internet are also a factor. For example,
the distance from house to roadside is
usually further on a lifestyle property.
When a housing company quotes a
square metre rate, it will likely refer to
building the actual house, not external
landscaping or other features.
Some building companies offer turnkey
packages where the build price
incorporates an allowance for fences,
driveways, paths, letterbox, some soft
landscaping, and maybe a clothesline. You
will want to ascertain what you will get for
your money.
A building company’s lowest sqm
rate is likely (though not always) based
on a standard stud and internal door
height, and flat ceilings. Deviations like
opting for over height doors or higher
ceilings are usually extras with the build
price increasing. Be aware of sales patter
encouraging adding non-essential features
you may not really want, and which might
exceed your budget.
The features incorporated into a new
home impact on the sqm build price, a
figure which can range from $1,600 per
sqm for a standard house to over $3,000
per sqm for an architecturally designed
home.
When visiting show homes, determine
each company’s sqm rate and add-on
features incorporated, for the home on
view. Ask what is standard for each level
within their range of builds. The figures
will vary substantially between homes and
companies. Gather plenty of information
to gain an appreciation of what a quoted
sqm figures represents.

can spot a healthy home
Purchasing a house that’s warm and dry is a
priority for many property hunters, but how
can buyers identify a ‘healthy’ home?
Real Estate Authority (REA) chief executive
Kevin Lampen-Smith says there are a
handful of key traits to watch out for.
“A house that’s hard to heat can make you
sick and miserable. In many cases, the key is
good insulation,” Lampen-Smith says.
The World Health Organisation recommends
a minimum of 18 degrees in our
homes. Insulation is
often the most practical
and cost-effective way
to make a house more
energy efficient. An insulated
home is warmer
in winter and cooler
in summer, which can
provide health benefits
like reducing mould and
damp.
“Ask the agent or seller
if the property is insulated,
the type of insulation
used and when it was installed. Ask your
building inspector to check the state of the
insulation,” Lampen-Smith suggests.
Lampen-Smith explains insulation should
be replaced or topped up if it’s less than
12cm thick, doesn’t cover the whole ceiling,
has become wet or damp, or been damaged
by rodents or birds.
“If a property you’re looking at isn’t insulated,
it’s a good idea to budget for the cost
of doing the work, as your health (and your
wallet) will thank you in the long term.”
There’s support available for some buyers,
such as a Warmer Kiwi Homes insulation
grant. Some local councils also allow property
owner to add the cost of insulation to their
rates and pay this back over time.
When working to identify a healthy home,
Lampen-Smith says it’s important to watch
out for dampness. Signs of dampness include
musty smells, damp or mouldy wardrobe
contents, mould forming behind paintings
or furniture, or mould or watermarks on
ceilings or walls.
“Condensation on windows, especially in
bedrooms, isn’t necessarily a sign of excessive
dampness if it only happens occasionally
during winter,” Lampen-Smith explains.

have extractor fans in
the bathroom, kitchen
and laundry that are
vented outside. Fans
should not be vented
into the roof space.
Good curtains can
also help a house retain
warmth.
“It’s important to
note that curtains aren’t
necessarily included in
the sale of the house, so
ask about this and if the answer is yes, ensure
they’re included in the list of chattels in
the sale and purchase agreement,” Lampen-Smith
says.
According to EECA, good curtains should
be floor-length and fit tightly against the wall
or window frame. Sill-length curtains are
ineffective. Curtains should be wider than
the window frame and preferably be double
layered with a thick lining. If the property
has ineffective curtains, or does not come
with curtains, buyers should factor this cost
into their budget.
