over the lingering
conflict between the Tivs
disgrace and shame <strong>to</strong>
two neighbouring ethnic
groups.
President General of
MUT Chief Edward
Ujege and Secretary
General, Boniface
in Makurdi regretted
that “the conflict which
Government, LGA, <strong>to</strong>
Ukum LGA all of Benue
State has extended in<strong>to</strong>
is unnecessary, uncalled
for and a disgrace <strong>to</strong> the
longstanding cordial
relationship between the
two ethnic groups who
have lived peacefully
<strong>to</strong>gether in the past as
brothers and sisters.
These conflicts are
enemies of the progress
need in this hour of
numerous external
challenges in <strong>Nigeria</strong>.
“MUT hereby calls on
Kwara govt begs flood prone
ILORIN—THE Kwara
State Government has
appealed <strong>to</strong> residents of the
state <strong>to</strong> heed the recent
flood alerts which predicted
heavy flooding in parts of
<strong>Nigeria</strong>, following the
steady rise in water levels
in River Niger.
Permanent Secretary in
the Ministry of
Environment, Amosa
Isiaka Al-Amin, said at a
briefing, yesterday, in
Ilorin, that Governor
AbdulRahman
AbdulRazaq, had directed
that proper enlightenment
be done and other
preventive steps taken <strong>to</strong>
ensure Kwarans did not fall
victims of flooding.
He said, “Kwara State
falls within this axis and
this administration felt
compelled <strong>to</strong> officially alert
the people <strong>to</strong> this
natural phenomenon,
human activities and failure
<strong>to</strong> heed warnings. The
Kwara State Government
led by Governor
appeals <strong>to</strong> communities
Reps probe alleged employment
racketeering in Fed govt agencies
By Demola
Akinyemi
ILORIN—HOUSE of
Representatives has set
up an Ad-hoc committee <strong>to</strong>
investigate alleged
employment racketeering
by government officials in
federal parastatals,
ministries ,departments
and other agencies where
less privileged and
unemployed <strong>Nigeria</strong>ns are
allegedly denied
opportunities <strong>to</strong> secure
employments.
Among the affected
MDAs include Cus<strong>to</strong>ms,
Civil defence corps, Federal
Roads Safety Corps, FRSC,
Immigration and Prisons
service .
A member of the ad-hoc
committee , representing
Ilorin East/Ilorin South
Federal constituency
Abdulganiyu Olododo,
gave the hint in Ilorin,
and Benue State, we
want <strong>to</strong> appeal that the
governors mobilize
sufficient security <strong>to</strong>
control the crisis and
find a lasting solution <strong>to</strong>
it.
“In addition, for long
lasting peace <strong>to</strong> prevail,
it is our candid advice
that the Tiv community
whose ances<strong>to</strong>rs had
lived in Taraba State time
immemorial be
recognised and
integrated in<strong>to</strong> the
traditional ruling
authority of the state and
they should also be
accorded all rights as
enshrined in the <strong>Nigeria</strong>
constitution.”
Kwara State, after donating
N200,000 <strong>to</strong>wards the
completion of the
installation of transformer
Idigba/Idi-Ogede
Akerebiata community in
Ilorin East local
government area of the
state.
The people of the
community have been in
darkness for the past few
months due <strong>to</strong> a faulty
transformer in the area
donated <strong>to</strong> them by last
administration.
Olododo said: “The
members of House of
Representatives are
disturbed by the trends of
alleged malpractices and,
therefore, set up an ad-hoc
committee <strong>to</strong> investigate
the allegation <strong>to</strong> correct the
trend in the overall benefits
of unemployed <strong>Nigeria</strong>ns.
We have already started
working and the
revelations are mind
boggling. Anyone found
guilty would be made <strong>to</strong>
face the full wrath of the law.
The essence of governance
is <strong>to</strong> make life bearable <strong>to</strong>
the youths and not <strong>to</strong>
compound their problems.
The administration of
President Muhammadu
Buhari believes in good
governance and would not
be part of any move <strong>to</strong> add
problems <strong>to</strong> the people of
the country, especially the
teeming unemployed
youths.”
On the financial support
<strong>to</strong> the installation of
transformer <strong>to</strong> the Were/
Idigba/Idi-Ogede
community, the lawmaker
said the support was his
promise made during his
electioneering campaign <strong>to</strong>
the community during the
last general elections in the
state.
a while. Communities in
Jebba and Bacita are also
urged <strong>to</strong> take this very
seriously for safety reasons.
Farming along riverine
areas should be
discouraged for now.
Resettlement centres
located at Godiwaji in
Patigi constructed by the
Federal Government could
be a safer place during this
period.
“Residents of
communities in Kwara
Central like Isale Koko,
Dumon, and Abata
Sunkere, among others, are
advised <strong>to</strong> heed this
warning. Government
urges residents of the state
<strong>to</strong> avoid dumping of wastes
in<strong>to</strong> river channels or
drains <strong>to</strong> allow for easy flow
of water, while illegal
structures along water
ways should be
demolished.”
The government
explained that flood
incidents were often due <strong>to</strong>
intensity of rainfall and
rains<strong>to</strong>rm, blockage of
drainage system, poor
urban planning resulting in
erection of structures within
the flood plains and water
ways, river flooding, as well
as coastal flooding.
He said while nobody
could be blamed for the
natural phenomena that
might cause flooding,
people had a responsibility
<strong>to</strong> avoid actions such as
blockage of water ways and
indiscriminate dumping of
wastes which often worsens
flooding and leads <strong>to</strong> loss
of lives and property and
humanitarian crisis.
Al-Amin, informed that
the ministry would <strong>to</strong>day
flag -off some corrective
measures <strong>to</strong> clear Ilorin of
indiscriminate dumping of
waste and blockage of
drains as part of the efforts
<strong>to</strong> ward off flooding.
He added that the health
officials of old had been
returned <strong>to</strong> the state and
would be going from house
<strong>to</strong> house <strong>to</strong> ascertain
residents' level of
compliance.
