El-Zakzaky was returned <strong>to</strong> the country after he refused <strong>to</strong> be treated by doc<strong>to</strong>rs provided by the government. In a statement issued yesterday, Ibrahim Musa, spokesman of the movement, said the Islamic cleric did not plan <strong>to</strong> seek asylum in India, contrary an allegation by the government. He said the allegation was a campaign of calumny against El-Zakzaky by the government <strong>to</strong> hide its ‘’gross misconduct in a foreign land”. ‘’The Islamic movement further accused the federal government of mischievously going beyond its role of supervision <strong>to</strong> the level of maliciously interfering in the medical process, :Vanguard News :@vanguardnews :@vanguardnews NEWS HOTLINES: 08052867023, 08052867058 No going back on RUGA — GOV SULE •Says it's best option <strong>to</strong> end farmers, herders' conflicts By David Odama LAbdullahi AFIA—GOVERNOR Sule of Death in attacks on Benue communities <strong>to</strong>ll rises <strong>to</strong> 9 MPolice AKURDI—THE Command in Benue, yesterday said the death <strong>to</strong>ll from Saturday’s gunmen attack on mourners in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of the state had risen <strong>to</strong> nine. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, said in Makurdi that the police were still investigating the circumstances instructing on which doc<strong>to</strong>rs the Sheikh and his wife must see, while refusing <strong>to</strong> allow them access <strong>to</strong> their own doc<strong>to</strong>rs, which confirms the allegation that the government had wanted <strong>to</strong> kill the Sheikh in the name of medical treatment, ‘’ he said. “Before efforts at resolving this impasse could be concluded, the Sheikh was brought back <strong>to</strong> <strong>Nigeria</strong>, since their evil schemes could not be executed. The government is now churning out contradic<strong>to</strong>ry explanations <strong>to</strong> blame the Sheikh for not allowing himself <strong>to</strong> be killed in the name of medical treatment. The <strong>Nigeria</strong>n government is also blackmailing the Sheikh that he sought for asylum in India just <strong>to</strong> cover their own gross misconduct in a foreign land.” Musa said El-Zakzaky was forced <strong>to</strong> either accept the choice of being treated by unknown doc<strong>to</strong>rs or <strong>to</strong> be returned home within two hours. surrounding the attack and its aftermath. Anene explained that four persons were killed at the burial of Tor Gbev Amaafu in Tongov while additional five were killed during reprisal attacks by Amaafu, Sati Agirigi and Ikurav Tiev communities. She said the killings were suspected <strong>to</strong> be the frequent clashes between Ikurav and Shitile people in the area in recent times. “The clash cut across three villages. There is no reason for these attacks. <strong>Nigeria</strong>n, who swallowed 67 wraps of cocaine jailed in UK THE Isleworth Crown court in the United Kingdom weekend sentenced Samuel Nwankwo, a 27-year-old <strong>Nigeria</strong>n man, <strong>to</strong> four years in prison over drug trafficking. According <strong>to</strong> the Crown Prosecution Service, the principal public agency for conducting criminal prosecutions in England and Wales, Nwankwo, who is a resident of Eastfield in Peterborough, ingested 67 wraps of cocaine worth £82,210 in Brazil before boarding a flight <strong>to</strong> London on February 11. He also alleged that he had been visiting his wife and was short on annual leave. Nwankwo is said <strong>to</strong> have boarded Latam Airlines flight from Sao Paulo <strong>to</strong> Heathrow airport where he was nabbed by security operatives at the terminal 3. The convict, who had been in the South American country for five days, had no checked baggage but a body scan showed suspicious images in his s<strong>to</strong>mach. “A body scan at the airport revealed suspicious shapes inside Nwankwo. He was then taken <strong>to</strong> a hospital for a CT scan where dozens of concealed packages were identified inside him,” the CPC reported. “He had previously pleaded guilty <strong>to</strong> one count of fraudulent evasion on the importation of a prohibited Class A drug.” The drug found in Nwankwo was said <strong>to</strong> have an average purity of 77.1 per cent. The judge, however, sentenced him <strong>to</strong> four years in prison and also ordered that the cocaine be destroyed. “Importing drugs by ingestion is illegal and could lead <strong>to</strong> lethal consequences. Nwankwo was lucky <strong>to</strong> be alive after taking such a high quantity of cocaine,” Cindy Fayefunmi, a crown prosecution service official, said. Several peace meetings with the communities have yielded no positive results,” Anene said. An eyewitness said the gunmen who numbered more than 10 opened fire on the mourners killing and injuring several persons in the process. The gunmen attacked the mourners in the early hours of Saturday as a result of which four persons lost their lives on the spot while several others sustained severe injuries. The area has witnessed serious criminal activities in the past four years. Nasarawa State has said there is no going back on RUGA programme of the federal government in Nasarawa state, insisting that it remains the surest way <strong>to</strong> end farmers and herders clashes. Governor Sule, who spoke on a radio programme moni<strong>to</strong>red in Lafia, did not only advocate for regular meetings among governments of various states, he also note that supporting security agencies with required <strong>to</strong>ols was the best option, saying “you know what, the only way <strong>to</strong> eliminate the problems of farmer/ headers is <strong>to</strong> separate them. You can’t say that farmers will live in the same place with the herders and have peace because they have no control over the cattle and the cattle need <strong>to</strong> go in<strong>to</strong> people’s farms. “The best thing is <strong>to</strong> have a separate place for them, so we embraced the idea of the Ruga project. We are aware it has been su<strong>spend</strong>ed at the moment and we respect the fact that government has su<strong>spend</strong>ed it until it is fully studied. But since we have already received the idea, there is a way we can talk <strong>to</strong> the people. Though it has been su<strong>spend</strong>ed at the federal level, let’s us at the state level find a way, even if we have <strong>to</strong> call it our own RUGA kind of arrangement, that is what we are trying <strong>to</strong> do. “My position in the case of RUGA project is that let us go in<strong>to</strong> the root causes of the problems, same thing with the Almajiri system. We are trying <strong>to</strong> encourage them in such a way that instead of Almajiris becoming beggars and lacking what <strong>to</strong> eat; we want <strong>to</strong> take them away from the streets. We are looking at the Almajiri system different from the way they look at it. We want <strong>to</strong> find something for them <strong>to</strong> do, educate them so they can be useful <strong>to</strong> themselves. When they are educated in the western education, they can go and acquire Islamic education which is meant for the Almajiri in the first place.” Regular meetings of various state governments, he said “The number one formula is <strong>to</strong> be on the same page with everybody, let us understand that lack of peace in Benue is the same lack of peace in Nasarawa, Taraba. Whatever affects Nasarawa State the same thing will affect all other places in Plateau, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kwara, Niger and the federal capital.
