How many are in your group and are
many women involved?
Our group class has about 30 people
and we have 2 regular women. Overall,
it’s about 93% men and 7% women.
You are ripped, there’s no denying it,
but does it come down to bodyweight
training or do you follow a special
diet?
More recently I’m more careful with my
diet, but I have trouble with that when
I travel. I’ve had a couple of crashes on
my diet. I’m better eating pretty clean
now. I’m a pescatarian, so I’ll eat fish
and eggs, but I won’t eat chicken or
beef, and I try to get a lot of veggies.
What are some of the moves that you
do best?
The planche push-ups. I was getting
really good at them back at a time
when it wasn’t really that popular.
I think I’m very skilled at plyometric
movements on the parallel bars, the
ones that are explosive and dynamic.
I’ve seen people at a really high level
struggle to do some of the stuff I do. I’m
bigger than the average guy you see
doing this sort of stuff, I’m weighing
in now at 200 pounds, and usually the
guys you see jumping around doing
this are around 160 or less.
Tell us a bit about competitions. Who
arranges them? What’s involved?
I’ve arranged some of the New York
ones. The international competitions
are hosted by the WSWCF or the
World Street Workout & Calisthenics
Federation. The team has done great
and me personally I’ve done pretty
good. I used to be really passionate
about freestyle but I don’t practice as
much freestyle as I used to. Freestyle
is when you make up your own moves,
patterns and combinations from the
skill set you’ve learned. You’re judged
on how well you present it. The cold
weather makes it too hard to practice it.
What are your plans for the future?
We plan on teaching online classes on
our website, Barstarzz.com. We are
planning to have an online membership
(for a fee) so people can sign up and
see (similar to the App) an exclusive
section where you can learn different
workouts for the day and see your
progress. This should be launching
within the month.
What’s your advice to beginners?
I suggest exploring a lot of the free
information on the internet. In addition
to Barstarzz sites, Google things and read
a lot of articles. Look at them all. Don’t
just rely on one article. After that you
might consider buying DVD’s or taking
lessons. Also, take it slow and be patient.
Everyone progresses at their own pace.
The planche
push-ups. I was
GETTING really
good AT them BACK
AT a time when
it wasn’t really
THAT popular.
