in the design of the new $37.5
million Hornby mega-facility will
be prioritised today.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board will make
a recommendation to the city
council on what it wishes to see in
the new Hornby Library, Service
Reassurance for village residents
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
LONG-SUFFERING retirement
village residents putting up with
noisy vehicles driving past their
homes have been reassured they
have not been forgotten.
Lady Wigram Retirement
Village residents battling to have
heavy vehicle restrictions placed
on Lodestar
Ave were left
“disappointed”
when the
road was left
out of a major
speed limit
review for
Halswell and
Anne Galloway
Hornby.
The
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board recently recommended
a raft of changes to
speed limits, which will go to the
city council for final approval.
However, city councillor Anne
Galloway said residents should
not feel forgotten as the issue of
the lowering the speed limit on
the road is being dealt with.
Lodestar Ave will instead be
included in a review of the speed
limits around the Wigram Skies
area.
City council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas
said any proposed changes to
Lodestar Ave’s speed limit will
COMFORT: Lodestar Ave residents have been reassured they
have not been forgotten after their road was left out of a major
speed limit review for Halswell and Hornby.
be brought to the community
board in the next 12 months.
Said Cr Galloway: “It has not
been forgotten at all, it is just not
happening as quickly as I would
have liked and perhaps what I
have expected.”
She said she has been told by
city council staff the consultation
is likely to happen sooner
than 12 months.
For the past four years, noisy
trucks on Lodestar Ave has
been a long-standing issue for
residents living at the retirement
village.
The matter came to a head
in 2017 when prominent rest
home owner and businessman
John Tooby verbally abused his
tenants when they put up a sign
complaining about noisy trucks.
In spite of pleas from residents,
heavy vehicle restrictions
have not been placed on the
road.
This is after city council staff
discovered through an assessment
a significant decrease of
heavy vehicles between 2017-
2018, Mr Thomas said.
A Lady Wigram resident,
who did not wish to be named,
said while she was disappointed
Lodestar Ave wasn’t included in
the last review, she was pleased it
was still on the table.
Resident Chris Havill said it is
a good thing the speed limit will
be looked at but he thought it
was “strange” it wasn’t included
in the last review.
“The only one everyone has
been talking about and it is the
one that was left off . . . once the
hospital and the dementia unit
are built you don’t want cars
whizzing up and down there at a
fair rate of knots,” he said.
A hospital, dementia unit and
rest home are planned to be
built along the residential street
as part of the village’s ongoing
developments.
Bob Rush, who lives at the
village, said lowering the speed
limit would help, but not solve,
the issues with the road.
“The original problem is
basically the speed of vehicles
coming down here, plus the
trucks using the road as a bypass
– it was never designed to have
trucks down here,” he said.
TEMPLETON CEMETERY
A block of city council-owned
land in Templeton is likely be used
as a cemetery and sports park.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board is due to
decide today whether to retain 173
Maddisons Rd and recommend
the city council progress with a
draft development plan for the site.
In May, Western News reported
the city council was considering
using about two-thirds of the land
for a cemetery and zoning the
rest so it could be developed for a
sports hub.
NEW BUS SHELTERS
Three new bus passenger shelters
could be installed at stops in
Halswell and Riccarton. The
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board will look
at installing the shelters along
Richmond Ave, next to Knights
Stream School, and beside
Caulfield Reserve and at 139
Waimairi Rd. The shelters are
needed due to the average number
of daily weekday passenger
boardings meeting the demand
threshold of more than 20. A
decision on the shelters is due to
be made at the board meeting
today. A new bus shelter will also
be installed at the existing stop on
102 Straven Rd. It was approved
by the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board.
Playing for
promotion
•From page 1
CGHS head of sport Robin Brown
said the season has been “very good.”
“The team have taken the movement
from senior 1 and playing
outside, to premier 2 in their
stride,” she said.
Last week, the team faced off
against St Nicholas in the semifinal
of the premier 2 competition,
and scraped by with a one-goal
win, beating St Nicholas 41-40.
The girls will take on Technical
B in the final tonight at Pioneer
Stadium at 6.30pm, and it is set to
be a tough battle.
Technical B will go into the final
as firm favourites, after playing
the final round of the competition
unbeaten, with a dominant 25-goal
win against the school team the
last time they faced off.
The winner of the final will be
promoted to premier 1 next season,
and CGHS has not had a team play
in the top grade since about 2003.
The team has six year 13 players,
and Mrs Brown said losing their
experience will impact the team
next season, but there are promising
young players in the junior
teams.
The team is set to put on a
strong showing at the South Island
Secondary Schools netball competition
next month, sitting at third
place from last year’s tournament.
Pupil safety solution in progress
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
FLEXIBLE BARRIERS will
remain in place at a busy
intersection in Halswell until a
permanent solution is completed
to keep children safe.
The New
Zealand Transport
Agency
has gone out
for public
consultation
over a proposed
Stuart
Cameron
permanent
solution for the
intersection of
Larsens and
Halswell Rd, located next to
Halswell School.
The solution was sought after
a petition was signed by more
than 600 people calling for the
intersection to be made safer for
school pupils.
Since May, traffic separators
preventing vehicles from turning
right when travelling in and
out of Larsens Rd onto Halswell Rd
have been in place.
NZTA’s proposed permanent
solution has a number of objectives
including to install an electronic
no-right turn sign which
will only be active during school
patrol times.
A pedestrian refuge island will
be installed and no-stopping
lines will be extended.
A raised painted island at
Larsens Rd entrance will also
be put in place to assist with
safer pedestrian crossing and
guide right-turning traffic onto
Halswell Rd at off-peak times.
In the meantime, the flexible
barriers will remain until the
changes are made.
Halswell School principal Stuart
Cameron said the solution is
a good compromise between ensuring
there is access for vehicles
using the road and maintaining
safety for children crossing
Halswell Rd.
Previous feedback NZTA
received from the community
showed the while the barriers
increased safety, it also restricted
access to join onto Halswell Rd,
encouraged poor behaviours and
increased travel times.
“Obviously with the no turning
in school hours, that is really
important from our perspective
because that is the key time for
us and our children crossing the
road,” Mr Cameron said.
Mr Cameron agreed while
the current trial is working well
from a safety perspective, it has
created access issues for the
community.
inside the budget constraints
“that obviously everyone has.”
But he said “ultimately” he
would have liked to have seen
a lighter pedestrian crossing
installed.
“During the rest of the
time, the traffic flows unless
somebody wants to cross.
Thereby they push the button,
they cross the road and across
Quarry plan changes upset opponents
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
and Devon Bolger
RESIDENTS opposing the
planned Templeton quarry are
upset Fulton Hogan wants to
change its original application
for the controversial project.
Fulton Hogan sent the
Selwyn District Council and
Environment Canterbury a
series of revisions it wants to
make to its original
resource consent
application for
the 170ha Roydon
Quarry.
The changes
include:
Jolene
Eagar
Simon
Moore
•Decreasing the
total active open
area of the quarry
from 40ha to a
maximum of 26ha.
•Originally the
application sought
to provide for up to
1500 heavy vehicle
movements per day
with an average of
1050 movements
per day. But Fulton
Hogan now wishes to amend the
proposal to a daily limit of 800
heavy vehicles.
•Fulton Hogan initially
intended to develop a new
dedicated heavy vehicle access
from Jones Rd and use the
existing access off the road as
a dedicated light vehicle access
to the site. Instead, it wishes
to provide a “shared” heavy
and light vehicle access point
meaning there will only be one
access point.
Now residents who have been
fighting to stop the quarry
from getting the green light are
calling for all submitters to have
the opportunity to respond to
Fulton Hogan’s amendments.
Templeton Residents’
Association treasurer Jolene
Eagar said she is concerned
only one-third of those who
submitted against the original
application will have the
opportunity to respond to the
changes.
“If you did not tick you wanted
to be heard at the hearing, that is
REVISED.
Fulton Hogan
has come up
with a series
of revisions it
wants to make
to its original
resource
consent
application.
it. You don’t get an opportunity
to say anything about the
application again . . . we believe
this is unfair.”
The hearing on the resource
consent application is due to
start on November 18.
An ECan spokeswoman was
unable to comment at this stage
on whether the public could resubmit
as it is still reviewing the
new information received.
Outspoken quarry opponent
Simon Moore said the
application should go back
to “phase one” with this new
information and everyone
should have the chance to
resubmit.
“There should be no question
about it. The application has
changed so dramatically from
what it first looked like when
people submitted on it. If they
don’t allow people to resubmit
the whole hearing is a farce. It
makes no sense, it’s not fair, it’s
an absolute circus,” he said.
The changes to the original
proposal are part of the
additional information on the
resource consent application
Fulton Hogan provided as
requested by ECan and the
district council.
The additional information
sought by two authorities from
Fulton Hogan included the
volume of groundwater which
would be extracted from the
quarry, birdstrike mitigations,
and an update on draft
conditions. Fulton Hogan has
also provided more information
on how its mobile processing
plant will be used.
Busy street to get crossing
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A CROSSING will be installed
on a busy Halswell street in a
bid to improve pedestrian safety.
But while city council staff
have confirmed a crossing will
be constructed it will not be controlled
like a zebra crossing.
Its transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas said a
controlled crossing is not suitable
at this location due to the
low number of pedestrians that
cross.
THe Halswell Pharmacy has
been calling for the crossing
since March last year following
a boom in development in the
street over the past two years.
The city council is planning
to install a dropped kerb 4-5m
north of the car park driveway,
signage and a marked crossing
estimating to cost between
$2000-$3000.
It is planned to be installed in
the next financial year.
Halswell Pharmacy owner
Karen Frater said while she
while she would have preferred a
controlled crossing, “something
is better than nothing.”
“As long as we have got safe
signage so motorists know that,
is all I am worried about.”
The pharmacy’s concerns
stem from disabled, elderly
IT’S HAPPENING: Halswell Pharmacy owner Karen Frater’s
calls to have crossing installed on Ensign St to make the road
safer will be answered. A crossing is planned to be installed
over the next financial year.
and families having to cross
the road from medical centre
Halswellhealth to the pharmacy
following appointments.
But Mrs Frater said she wants
to make Ensign St safer for the
entire community.
An access ramp linking the
Halswell Pharmacy with the
footpath is also planned. In the
past people climbing the steps
into the pharmacy have occasionally
tripped.
“The access to the pharmacy
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
is via steps only, which doesn’t
appropriately allow for mobilityimpaired
pedestrians. This
forces mobility-impaired users
to access the pharmacy using
the busy vehicular entrance,”
Mr Thomas said.
Mrs Frater said while she has
owned the pharmacy for the
past 10 years, it is in the last
two years the road has become
busier.
“I think it is a bit of a racetrack
between Halswell Junction
Rd and getting into town,” Mrs
Frater said.
Most recent traffic counts
show 2688 vehicles travel on the
road each day.
Mrs Frater said there are
schools and kindergartens in the
area including Oaklands School,
The Lighthouse Pre-school and
BestStart Nottingham Avenue
adding to the busyness.
The Oaks Village, which the
pharmacy is part of has also
been completed.
The building complex holds
four mixed-used commercial
buildings for 10 tenancies,
which includes a convenience
store, Indian restaurant Roti
Chai, Curves Halswell, Elite
Physiotherapy Halswell and
Domino’s Pizza.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board member
Ross McFarlane said while it was
a good outcome the crossing
may not happen as quickly as it
could of if he had put in a notice
of motion.
It was refused due to the city
council already planning to take
action on the crossing.
Boy racer issues in Hornby
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
SPEEDING CARS are causing
more headaches – this time for
residents living on Neill St in
Hornby.
The boy racer issues were
highlighted in a letter to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board.
Residents are concerned
the street is being used as
a “raceway”, with speeding
vehicles at risk of not making the
bend at the Main South Rd end
of the street.
The letter was presented by
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association secretary Lyn
Hucklebridge.
“Residents feel that the police
are not doing enough patrols
around this area when reports
are made,” she said.
Mrs Hucklebridge said while
residents do not want speed
humps installed, they are
“extremely concerned” about the
speed of some vehicles.
A police spokeswoman told
Western News “officers on the
ground” were not aware of issues
with boy racers on the street.
However, a resident, who did
not wish to be named, said she
has made online submissions to
police and phoned them “about
a dozen times.”
She said she has made
police aware of the issue, but
appreciates they are busy.
Another resident said boy
racers have been using Neill St
for about 20 years.
“The wet weather is an
absolute drawcard for them
because they can get more of a
slide on.”
Said board chairman Mike
Mora: “It is a pretty hard thing
to control. You have to be there
at the time it happens.”
Mrs Hucklebridge raised
several traffic-related issues in
her letter. She said residents are
also concerned the intersection
of Neill St/Springs Rd has been
TROUBLE:
Boy racers
have been
leaving skid
marks on
Neill St in
Hornby.
narrowed by a planted plot,
restricting traffic trying to get
out onto Springs Rd.
Mrs Hucklebridge said if a
motorist is turning right onto
Springs Rd no one can turn
left.
She also raised issues with the
Halswell Junction Rd extension
being pushed back and says
there is no sealed footpath on
the west side of Main South
Rd from the traffic lights to
Countdown Hornby and from
Chappie Pl to Ravensdown.
Mr Mora said the matters have
been passed on to city council
staff, who will report back.
The schedule to be approved
also proposes the facility includes
a reception, espresso bar, creative
activity room and multipurpose
study/meeting/
break out rooms.
Board chairman
Mike Mora said the
“must-haves” are in the
component schedule,
but the community
consultation undertaken
last month are for extra
features if the existing
budget allows it.
The city council sent out a survey
last month asking residents to
choose their top additional four
features they would like to see in
the design on top of the guaranteed
facilities.
The consultation was previously
criticised by Hornby resident
Mark Peters, who said there was
an expectation many of the additional
features listed in the survey
should already be guaranteed in
the facility.
The city council told Western
News the cost of each option
varies greatly and the number
that can be accommodated will
depend on what is selected.
But Mr Peters said: “I don’t see
Mark Peters
WED
to SUN
why they are using the budget
as an excuse. They have been
pressed repeatedly to use some
imagination and find some other
(funding) sources.”
Feedback from the
community showed
there was a need for a
hydrotherapy pool to be
included in the design
to be used by elderly,
disabled and sporting
communities.
A hydroslide,
child-minding
services, an outdoor space which
can be lit, study/computer spaces,
automatic doors to make the
facility wheel-chair friendly
are some of the wishes the
community would like to have in
the facility.
If the component schedule
is approved by the board, city
council staff will commence the
concept design.
The facility is expected to open
2022.
Chu’s election signs
A neighbourhood for
the lucky few in the
heart of Halswell
Sections from $191,000
cloverden.nz | 08004AVANDA
start to disappear again in Riccarton
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
RICCARTON WARD city
council candidate Catherine
Chu’s election signs may have
once again become a target for
thieves.
In just two weeks, the 23-yearold
right-leaning Independent
Citizens candidate has had
five of her 20 campaign signs
removed from the Riccarton area
ahead of the October local body
elections.
Signs have been stolen from
Peverel St, Lyndon St and
Wharenui Rd.
Miss Chu said it is “really
odd”, as only her signs have been
stolen, even though they were
directly placed next to fellow
Independent Citizens candidate
Helen Broughton’s signs.
“It just seems to be mine
that are coming down. That is
unacceptable. I know five (stolen
signs) sounds minimal but a
quarter is quite a big amount
compared to the number of signs
I have,” Miss Chu said.
She said residents who had
called her to let her know a
sign had been stolen from
outside their property were
felling “unsettled”.
She believes this may be linked
to anxiety caused by the March
15 attacks.
“The fact someone has been
going to their property outside
and taking them down . . . even
I would be scared if I had a
billboard outside and I knew
someone was visiting my house
at nighttime. It is just creepy.”
Miss Chu says generally the
signs disappeared overnight and
she had reported the thefts to
police.
Senior Constable Ken Carter
said leading into the elections,
campaign signs from different
candidates will often go missing,
and Miss Chu was not alone on
the issue.
He said it is classified as theft
DISAPPEARED: Catherine Chu’s campaign signs have started
to go missing again.
and police have a number of
different ways of dealing with
the matter, depending on who is
responsible. Police could work
in conjunction with Canterbury
University on a disciplinary
process, a pre-charge warning
may be issued, or it could be
taken before the community
justice panel or court.
City councillor James Gough
was well-known for having his
signs taken by young admirers in
previous elections.
But Miss Chu said she did not
know why they were being taken
and didn’t want to speculate.
It is not the first time Miss Chu
has been targeted.
When she first ran for the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board in 2016, 80 of
her signs were stolen and two car
magnets were removed.
Miss Chu said she suspected
some of signs were stolen by
Canterbury University students
after she found one at the UCSA
Tea Party in 2016.
However, she said it was
unlikely students were the only
people responsible.
This year, Miss Chu’s
campaign signs cost $33 each.
making a difference in the city.
The Women’s Fund was
established last year, on the 125th
anniversary of women winning
the right to vote.
Said Christchurch Foundation
chief executive Amy Carter:
“Our city has a proud tradition
of women facilitating groundbreaking
societal change. In order
to recognise this, and to ensure
that this proud legacy continues,
we formed a fund to support
women and girls in our city who
Mrs Carter said women and
girls in Christchurch are a powerful
force. “Currently, women fill a
high percentage of key leadership
Hoodies highlight mental health
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
HOODIES HAVE been made
to help fight the stigma against
discussing mental health.
A “hug in a hoodie” design
has been created by Villa Maria
College students to encourage
young people to speak out about
their mental health and support
others.
The hoodies have been
designed by year 13 students
Anna Fox, Amelia Schiavuzzi,
Grace Cuff, Georgia Proudfoot
and Georgia Singleton as part of
their business studies group.
Of the hoodies sold, 70 per
cent of the profits will go to
the Sir John Kirwan Foundation
– which aims to reduce the
negative impact of unsupported
mental health issues youth face.
The project is part of the
Young Enterprise Scheme programme.
Amelia said the idea was
sparked because mental health
is a major issue in the country,
especially with young people.
“We all know someone who
has been impacted by mental
health and we want to make it
a bigger topic of conversation
as there is still a lot of stigma
around the issue,” she said.
Earlier this year it was reported
New Zealand has the highest
death rate for teenagers in the
HUGS AND HOODIES: Grace Cuff, Georgia Singleton, Anna Fox and Amelia Schiavuzzi are
selling hoodies to take away the stigma behind mental health.
developed world for people aged
10-24 – around 35 deaths per
100,000 people.
This is driven by high youth
suicide rates and youth road toll.
The comparisons with 18
other countries of similar economic
and cultural backgrounds
were made by British healthcare
think tank Nuffield Trust.
Amelia said it chose the foundation
because it gives young
people the skills to understand
their mental health so they can
talk about it and support others
to do the same.
The students are aiming to
sell 200 hoodies so it can donate
more than $1000 to charity.
•The hoodies cost $48 and
Opportunities
‘Schooling for the Whole Child’
The focus of a successful school is the pupil.
The growth of our children at Kirkwood
is supported by the many extension
opportunities we offer over and above our
classroom activities. We work on extending
learning opportunities in a number of areas.
Technology
Some of the highlights in our
technology area include:
• Robotics;
• 3D Printing;
• EPro8 Challenge;
• Fashion Design and Make.
Technology is a favourite area for
many students due to the ‘hands-on’
problem solving approach to learning.
Sports
Apart from the regular physical
education programmes within the
classrooms there are many other sports
offered at Kirkwood. Some the sports
played this year are Netball, Football,
Cross Country, Skiing, Swimming,
Rugby, Basketball, Water polo, Korfball,
Mountain Biking and Touch Rugby.
Music
Music is taught as part of the
performing arts curriculum in all
classrooms however, extra opportunities
are available for students to learn a wide
variety of music.
This year, our students have been
learning the Guitar, Piano, Violin, Drums,
Flute, Brass, singing in the Choir and
playing in the Orchestra.
Extension
Groups,
Competitions
and Events
Our students have many
opportunities to participate in various
competitions and events offered at
Kirkwood.
These include:
• University of Canterbury Academic
Competitions;
• Cantamath;
• Canterbury-Westland Science Fair;
• Science Badges;
• Blue Light PCT competition;
• Otago Problem Solving;
Awards
We value and encourage personal
excellence which is recognised with our
Title match decided by penalties
SPORT
• By Gordon Findlater
ST THOMAS of Canterbury
College claimed back-to-back
Canterbury first XI football
titles last week by defeating
Cashmere High School 5-4 in
a dramatic penalty shootout at
English Park.
Coming into the game St
Thomas were heavy favourites
after going undefeated in 11
league games which saw them
score 66 times while conceding
just twice. However, it took
Cashmere just 20 minutes to put
two goals on St Thomas, who
quickly found themselves on the
back foot.
“They were good. They came
out absolutely firing and we just
weren’t playing as we talked
about. We were overplaying at
the back and inviting their high
press,” said St Thomas coach
Jacob Allen.
In the second half St
Thomas got one back through
a Cashmere own goal before
Luke White levelled late in
the game to send the match
to a penalty shootout which
was decided when Aashish
Rai converted St Thomas’ fifth
successful penalty following an
SUCCESS: St Thomas’ won their second straight Canterbury secondary school football title at
English Park by defeating Cashmere High School on penalties.
earlier miss by Cashmere.
“There was certainly never a
loss of belief. At half-time the
boys were unreal. They got each
other up and made sure that
they weren’t going to be out
laying down . . . the year 13s
didn’t want to go out like that
in their final match in front of
their fans,” said Allen.
St Thomas will now turn
their attention to the premier
national secondary school
tournament in Napier next
month. After a poor result last
year the team are out to try and
replicate the run in 2017 which
saw them fourth.
“The final is a good bit
of momentum because
tournament footy can be one
of those things where you just
have to grind out a victory. It
doesn’t have to be pretty, it
just has to be won because you
don’t get a second chance,” said
Allen.
“It reassuring to know we can
grind out a hard game and not
just roll teams.”
St Thomas will play
Rutherford College from
Auckland, St Peter’s School
from Cambridge and Rathkeale
College from Masterton in the
pool at the national tournament
which runs from September 2-6.
Prior to St Thomas’ win,
Burnside High School claimed
the Canterbury premier girl’s
first XI title with a dominant 3-0
win over St Andrew’s College.
Middleton Grange
favourites against
Cashmere
• By Jacob Page
MIDDLETON Grange are
sticking to their motto of
respecting everyone but fearing
no one, ahead of the Thomson
Trophy basketball final against
Cashmere High School at Cowles
Stadium tonight.
Middleton Grange beat the twotime
defending champions in pool
play 102-90 to take the Dowson
Cup from them and inflict their
first loss in more than two years,
However, coach Jack Williamson
said they are expecting to
work harder.
“We’re expecting they’ll have
Tom Webley back, who was
injured last time we played them
and that will be another thing we
have to contend with.
“We will look to play a fast style
of game, shoot accurately and
move their big guys around as
much as we can.
“It’s been a while, 2015 I think
since we last won this title.”
“I’m not sure if everyone
would consider us favourites or
not just because of the long period
of success Cashmere has had but
we go into the game confident we
can produce a good result,” he
said.
Middleton Grange had a 109-
66 win over Shirley Boys’ High
School in their semi-final while
Cashmere beat Christ’s College
76-73.
Tip-off is at 7.30pm.
Good tyres essential
in wintry conditions
Winter’s often wet, icy and generally slippery conditions mean
that good tyres with plenty of tread are essential for safe driving.
Hornby Tyres, on the corner of Main
South Road and Shands Rd, offers a
wide selection of quality Goodride and
Kumho tyres for all types of vehicle,
with good deals always available. They
will check your tyres and advise if any
need replacing.
Established almost a year ago, Hornby
Tyres is owned and operated by local
Hornby couple, Neil and Wendy Frew.
Neil has a strong background in the
tyre industry and is able to advise on
the best tyres for your particular needs.
Hornby Tyres has free loan cars too, so
you can drop your car off there in the
morning to have tyres fitted and pick it
up on the way home.
Your car battery can also create
problems in winter, Neil says, with cold,
frosty mornings sometimes causing it to
go flat. Not what you need when you are
late for work!
To avoid that happening, call into
Hornby Tyres for a free battery check.
They can supply and fit a new Bosch
battery if yours needs replacing.
Hornby Tyres also provides full
mechanical repairs and servicing and can
arrange your WOF.
Hornby Tyres is located next to the
BP Wigram service station, corner
Springs and Main South Road. They are
open Monday to Friday 7am-5.30pm
and Saturday 8am-3pm. Phone 341
Volunteers show visitors
our city’s attractions
WALKING GUIDES
WANTED
Showing visitors to many of Christchurch’s
beauty spots, natural attractions, places
of historical interest, and the changing
cityscape as the city rebuilds, is the
task undertaken by the team of 20
knowledgeable and friendly guides at
Walk Christchurch.
All the volunteers thoroughly enjoy
revealing our city’s unique features, many
of which visitors may not discover on their
own, and answering questions on the city
and its people.
Walk Christchurch was established in
1982 as the Christchurch Personal Guiding
Service, and has undergone a number of
changes over the years to meet the needs
of increasing numbers of visitors to the city.
The primary walk is the Classic
Christchurch Walk, a five-kilometre walk
around the central city, which takes
about two and a half to three hours. From
October, a shorter Highlights Christchurch
Walk is also being introduced. This will be
2.5 kilometres, lasting about 90 minutes.
More walks are also planned to meet
different requirements.
The walks are ranked in the top 10 activities
for tourists in Christchurch by Trip Advisor,
and positive reviews are regularly posted
on the Trip Advisor website.
Here is one example:
“Highly recommend booking this walking
tour. My guide was incredibly informed
and passionate about Christchurch, and
it was a pleasure to listen to him speak
about the city he loves. The walk never felt
tiresome, and I got to see all the sights of
Christchurch. Highly recommended!”
The volunteer guides themselves get many
benefits from their guiding activities.
For example, Josie has, over the years
of guiding, developed an interest in our
city – its past, present and future as well
as improving her knowledge of the city
architecture and landscape.
Josie considers herself not just a walking
guide, but an ambassador for the city. She
is often one of the few people that visitors
can meet and talk with over the duration
of the walk.
Craig appreciates being part of an
active, sociable group of walking guides.
He has increased his appreciation of
Christchurch and the guided walks have
taken him to places he had never visited
or known about. Stories about those
places have strengthened his connection
to Christchurch and his knowledge about
what is happening in Christchurch.
Volunteers needed
To meet the growing demand for the
walks, Walk Christchurch is seeking more
volunteers to join the team. Details of
requirements can be seen to the right of
this page.
For more information visit the Walk
Christchurch website below.
Tasty Bites
Healthy chicken dish an instant hit
Scotch eggs are done with
a flavoursome chicken
mince wrapped around
a boiled egg and then
cooked in the air fryer.
It’s tasty, portable and a
wonderful breakfast dish
Chicken scotch eggs
Gluten, dairy and sugarfree/no
added fat
Ingredients
1 tsp baking soda
7 eggs
490g raw chicken breast, roughly
chopped
1 green apple, peeled, cored and
diced, optional
2 tsp chopped ginger
2 tsp chopped garlic
Small handful coriander leaves
Small handful parsley leaves
1 Tbsp and seven tsp sticky sauce
(see next recipe)
Himalayan salt and freshly
Ground black pepper
Equipment
Air fryer
Directions
Bring a medium-sized pot of
water to the boil along with the
baking soda and, using a large
spoon, carefully lower the eggs
into the boiling water. For soft
boiled eggs, boil for 4.5min. For
semi-hard, boil for 5.5min and
for hard-boiled, boil for 6.5min.
Remove the pot immediately
from the heat and run the pot
under cold water to stop the eggs
from cooking.
As soon as you can pick the
egg up, carefully roll the egg
on the bench to crack the shell
which will help the egg to cool
down more quickly.
Set the eggs aside to cool while
you prepare the chicken mixture.
Place the chicken breast, apple
(if you are using), ginger, garlic,
fresh herbs, and a tablespoon of
sticky sauce into the bowl of a
blender or food processor.
Season with a little salt and
pepper and blend on high until
very well-combined.
Using a set of scales, evenly
portion the chicken mince into
seven piles.
Very carefully continue to peel
the eggs, making sure not to split
the eggs as you do so. Take your
time.
Take a pile of the mince and
flatten it as much as possible
in the palm of your very clean
hand. Sit the egg on top of the
mince and bring the mince up
to cover the egg as evenly as
possible. This may take a little
practice to get right, so take your
time.
Once all the eggs are covered,
pre-heat your airfryer for two
minutes on 180 deg C. Add the
rest of the sticky sauce to a bowl
and roll the scotch eggs in the
sauce to fully cover the outside of
the eggs.
Place the eggs inside the air
fryer basket and cook for seven
to eight minutes until well
covered and the mince is fully
cooked. Cool the eggs before
storing in the fridge.
You can make these scotch
eggs in advance. They will last
four days in the fridge or you can
vacuum seal them and increase
their fridge shelf life up to two
weeks.
Sticky sauce
Ingredients
1 medium-sized green apple,
peeled, cored and diced
240ml low sodium tamari
120ml apple cider vinegar
120ml water
3 slices ginger
1 lime, zested and juiced
Directions
Place the apple in a small
pot and add enough water so
that it comes halfway up the
apple.
Bring to the boil and cook
for 10min or until the apple
is soft and the water has
evaporated. Blend the apple in
a small food processor until
smooth and place in a mediumsized
pot.
Add the tamari, apple cider
vinegar, water, ginger, lime zest
and lime juice to the apple and
whisk well to combine.
Bring the sauce to the boil and
then reduce to a rapid simmer
and cook for 10-15min or until
the sauce has reduced down
by half and has become a little
thicker and syrupy.
Cool the sauce and store in a
jar in the refrigerator for up to
two months.
