The Halswell Menz Shed provides a
nurturing, supportive and active environment

been around for decades and are a globally
renowned member organisation where they
build friendships and explore ways to be
creative for themselves and others.
HELPING OTHERS
We all need help sometimes. Learning new
skills for the first time can be daunting.
It’s even more daunting when what able
-bodied people take for granted is taken away
suddenly. Helping others out at the Shed is
what it’s all about at the Halswell Menz Shed.
A FLOOR CHAIR for a disabled primary
school child is our latest effort. Integrating
into the main-stream means they will be
able to sit up on the mat with the rest of the
kids. OR Try painting a chair without sight
sometime or use a screw-driver with one
hand! (Luke 4 v18-19).
SHARING THEIR SKILLS
There is quite a bit going on at the Halswell
Shed and its all getting done well and quickly
because all members are helping each other
out.

The thread of a community interconnects with the
people who need assistance and the people who
give assistance. Glenda Martin of Volunteering
Canterbury is a mainstay in helping to organise
individuals and groups from the volunteer
perspective. Glenda shares her insight into the
value of volunteering.
VOLUNTEERING IS MY
PERSONAL MISSION
Taking up a part-time outreach role with
Volunteering Canterbury in 2012 provided the
opportunity to really get to know the community
sector first-hand, speaking to volunteer engaging
organisations as well as groups interested
in finding out how they could get involved.
Putting together projects for groups to explore
the community from a service angle has been
an enriching aspect as the original part-time
role developed, with highlights being a large
group of Year 1s who planted at a central
‘Tranquillity Garden’ and more recently a group
of Australasian holiday camp operators in
Christchurch for their national conference who
wanted an opportunity to get involved in and
around the Red Zone.
BACKGROUND
Soup kitchens in London and New York are where
Glenda Martin recalls her volunteering started
and then, on return to New Zealand, it was the
roles that often sit hand in hand with parenting –
managing sports teams, fundraising for the local
toy library and lots of sizzling sausages! These
days Glenda is a mentor with the 2019 Mitre
10 Community of the Year charity, Pillars, runs
a book club at Christchurch Men’s Prison, and
sits on two not-for-profit organisation Boards.
Recently she has chosen to spend annual leave in
Laos and Bangladesh teaching English. Glenda
says she have been privileged to live and work in
many parts of the world over the years and so to
have an opportunity to give back in some of those
areas seems a great way to retain connections and
make new ones! “I’m also very mindful that if we
were to look down from space on this planet, we
call Earth, there are no borders! I’m satisfied that
there is no conflict between being a kiwi and a
global citizen!”
THE IMPACT ON THE
COMMUNITY
Volunteers in Canterbury make a difference on
the lives of 36,000 people each year – while at the
same time enjoying benefits in their own lives
particularly around making new connections
and picking up or sharing skills. This equates to
a dollar value of around $4.7m – a good chunk
of the estimated $3.6b contributed by volunteers
nationally across New Zealand.

Volunteering Canterbury believes that anyone
can volunteer and that the experience should
be worthwhile and satisfying. With over 200
roles ‘on their books’ waiting for a volunteer,
they are well placed to assist people to find

assistance with volunteer recruitment, training
and resources for managers of volunteers and
advocating for volunteering. These are all key
roles of the 18 Volunteer Centres in New Zealand,
including the one located in Christchurch.

BOTTLE LAKE FOREST
(BLUE TRACK)
Duration of walk: The Blue Track is 11,4 km in
length and is fairly flat so should take around
1,5 - 2 hours.
Start location: The main entrance and car park
for Bottle Lake Forest is from Waitikiri Drive,
off Burwood Road, via either Marshlands or
Burwood. There is also access from Spencer
Park and from North Shore along the Southern
Pegasus Bay track.
The Blue Track start is clearly marked and begins
about 200 metres from the main car park.
Key Highlights:
• Bottle Lake is an exotic pine forest of
approximately 800 hectares.
• Tracks include long and short options to suit
all ages and levels of fitness
• Forest walks can be cool and shady on a hot
day

STYX MILL
Duration of walk: A number of walks in the reserve
with Panako Walkway being popular. It is a 40
minute walk within the reserve.

joins Christchurch’s iconic Woolston Brass
under the direction of Music Director Tyme
Marsters and compere Tim Beveridge to
perform tenor classics and raise funds for the
band’s future home.
New Zealand born, Simon O’Neill has
established himself as one of the finest
helden-tenors on the international stage.
He has frequently performed with the
Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House,
Covent Garden, Berlin, Hamburg and
Bayerische Staatsopern, Teatro alla Scala and
the Bayreuth, Salzburg, Edinburgh and BBC
Proms Festivals, appearing with a number of
illustrious conductors.
The Woolston Brass Band has been in
existence for 128 years having been the
most successful and recognised band in
New Zealand which consists of over thirty
musicians of all ages.
The band’s existing hall was damaged in the
earthquakes and after a five-year search, the
award-winning brass band has decided to
rebuild on their existing historic Dampier
Street site. Significant fundraising is now
sought to rebuild this rehearsal facility that
will host Woolston Brass and their pioneering
education programme – the Woolston Brass
Academy consisting of a learners group and
two training bands; Woolston Junior Band
and Woolston Concert Brass.
Simon O’Neill is proudly donating his
voice to help Woolston Brass raise funds
for the new band hall. The fundraising
concerts being held Friday 8 November at
the Christchurch James Hay Theatre and
Sunday 10 November at the Ashburton
Trust Event Centre will feature tenor classics
such as traditional Irish ballad Danny Boy
(Londonderry Air), Caruso written by Italian
composer Dalla, the famous Swedish Folk
Song (How Great Thou Art) and the iconic
aria Largo Al Factotum from Rossini’s opera
The Barber of Seville. Woolston Brass will
also perform contemporary brass band works
such as Tom Davoren’s Phoenix Rising and
the movement Phoenix from Peter Graham’s
War of the Worlds Suite, both of these works
emulate the rise of a Phoenix from the ashes
of destruction.
“I’m excited to perform with the
distinguished Woolston Brass in November.
I’ve always admired their musical excellence
and reputation and am honoured to be part
of their fundraising campaign to secure their
future home” said Simon O’Neill.

People may know that they are entitled to
have funds set aside for a pre-paid funeral.
What many people may not be aware of
are the different options that exist and the
amount that each person is allowed to set
aside for their funeral which will not be
included in an assessment of their assets
under the present Work and Income rules.
Many people choose to enter into a pre-paid
funeral arrangement with a funeral director of
their choice. Generally speaking, this will be
for a set amount which is sufficient to cover
the costs of a funeral at today’s rates. Those
funds are then invested in a funeral trust by
the funeral director. If there is a shortfall at
the time of your death, your estate will need
to make up the difference. You should seek
advice before signing any contract.
Another option is to establish a Funeral
Trust to hold funds specifically for your
funeral costs. Everyone is entitled to have
a maximum of up to $10,000 set aside in a
Funeral Trust which is not included as part
of your assets under current
Work and Income policy. A
Funeral Trust is established by
the signing of a declaration and
appointment of (usually) two
people as trustees (normally
the same people as you have
nominated as the executors in
your Will). Then, the sum of
money you decide to deposit in the name
of the Trust is held for the express purpose
of paying for your funeral. In deciding the
amount it is important to keep in mind that
the funds are locked into the Trust and will
not be available to you in your lifetime. These
funds may be invested in an investment of
your trustees’ choice.
At the time of your death, the trustees are free
to decide which funeral director to engage
and the funds are immediately available to
pay towards your funeral costs. If there is a
balance left, this will form part of your estate,
and is distributed according to the terms of
your Will.
Setting aside surplus funds in a Funeral Trust
provides peace of mind that your loved ones
will have one less thing to worry about at the
difficult time after your death and is also a
good asset protection measure.

THE FORD
ENDURA

If my memory serves me well, prior to evaluating
an Endura, the last Canadian-made Ford I drove
was the 1957 Customline my family owned and the
car that I used to get my driver licence.
Research suggests that it was built in the Oakville,
Ontario, manufacturing plant, the same facility that
today’s Endura comes from.
The old Customline sedan was very special, it was
V8-powered and amidst a plethora of English cars
in the Kiwi market it was bigger, more powerful
and for that reason had much appeal with me.
Today’s Endura is a sport utility vehicle which is
also a little different, while it arrives here in four
specification levels there is only one engine variant
and that is diesel-fed.
That is not a totally unique concept, Mazda’s CX-8
is also diesel only, and the Endura competes headto-head
with that car.
The Endura starts in the market at $53,490 (add
$3000 for all-wheel-drive), an ST-Line variant lists
at $64,990, while the Titanium, as evaluated, is
priced at $69,990. The latter wants for nothing, it
has all the trick electronics that Ford is building
into its models these days and it has luxury written
all over it.
In-cabin comfort is high while the specification
level is such that it could well be described as valuepacked
and if you are in Living Lifedemographic
with grandchildren in tow, they will simply love the
entertainment system, there are rear screens which
they can use for several different formats.
There is also a feel about the Endura that is quite
different, I describe it as the North American way
of manufacture, and it is just a little special.
The Endura isn’t large, at 4.8m it sits neatly
between Escape and Everest in Ford’s SUV line-up,
and although it is just a five-seater it has space to
burn on the inside.
Under the bonnet sits a four-cylinder turbocharged
engine of 1999cc. Immediately, I was drawn to its
subdued operation and quiet operating manner,
it’s really hard to pick that a diesel is lurking under
the bonnet, that is until you ask for performance.
It is an absolute stunner through the mid-range in
terms of output and acceleration.
Ford claims a healthy 400Nm torque figure, and
that is available all of the way from 2000rpm to
3000rpm, it will hunt up and down the rev band
willingly, almost like a petrol engine, such is its
free-revving nature and response. There’s also
140kW at the top end, and combined there is never
a point where power wilts.
In Titanium form drive is directed to all four
wheels through an eight-speed automatic
transmission. It, too, is responsible for the lively
flow of energy, there’s a gear for all moments, and
the gears shift without notice, they are eased in but
are quick nonetheless.
In terms of performance, the Endura will make
a standstill to 100km/h time of 8.8sec for the
1.8-tonne SUV, which is quite impressive. Ford also
lists a 6.7-litre per 100km (42mpg) combined cycle
average fuel usage rating which, by my reckoning,
is achievable and acceptable.
The Endura is classic SUV material, if you don’t
need the extra grip from four-wheel-drive there
is the front-drive only model, and it would be the
pick for me. However, I can report that the all-drive
model has stunning on-road handling behaviour.
It steers directly into a corner and there is much
feedback through the steering tiller.
When presented with a quick corner the Endura
leans ever so slightly, there is just enough firming
in the suspension to counteract gravitational forces,
while balance remains unaffected.
My wife and I were in Canada just a year or two
back sightseeing and visiting her cousins who
reside there, one of whom owns a Ford Edge,
which is the Endura badged for the Canadian
market. We travelled in it for only a short distance,
and it was fitted with a V6 petrol engine, but it was
enough for it to capture my attention.
The Endura is one of Ford’s global cars that will
constantly reward with performance, comfort and
economy.
