September is Acceptance month in SPB.
With acceptance, we hope SPB students
realize that it is okay to be different and
it is okay for others to be different too.
With acceptance, we hope to cultivate
respect for the differences between
oneself, others, and the way people do
things.
At SPB, students have a great opportunity
to practice acceptance. Our students
learn, play and interact with children and
adults who come from different countries
or islands or tribes with different culture,
religion and preference. They also
witness how people might have different
ways of thinking, playing or doing
things which make the world becomes
interesting.
We hope our families will also continue
practice acceptance at home. Elayna
Fernandez in her article 5 Ways to Teach
Our Children Acceptance wrote “by
accepting your children and teaching
them the positive principle of acceptance,
you will help them live a happier, more
peaceful life, and to grow up to be
successful adults”.
I hope you will also enjoy other articles
In the spirit of Indonesian Independence
Day, SPB held various activities for our
students on August 16, 2019.
Primary students learned about how
other countries celebrate independence
day. After the short assembly in the
Pelita auditorium, they proceeded to play
team based games where they solidified
their team work through games such as
catch paper ball game, hula hoop relay,
moving ping pong ball, etc.
Kindergarten students also had their
own independence day celebration. They
had a circle time, sing along , dance,
video time, cooking class and obstacle
race. They made the Indonesia's Flag.
"Happy Independece Day ... Merdeka!"
they shouted
On the 17th of August, students from
Primary to JC gathered together in SPB
arena to conduct the flag raising
ceremony while other Secondary and
Junior College students had the flag
raising ceremony in Bumi Perkemahan
Trijaya, Kuningan. The ceremony went
smoothly and solemnly, commemorating
the sacrifices of the patriots who fought
for the country’s independence.
RESPECT
On August 29-30, 2019 Primary students
gathered up for their monthly character
assembly. August is Respect month here
at SPB. In every class, we discussed
about being a person who has respect for
self and others and why it is important.
In this character assembly, students of
Primary 6 Corytho showcased a short
story, read aloud, watched a video and
sing the value of Respect. At the end
of the assembly, Miss Regina gave
a concluding statement about this
character trait and challenged students
SPB PARENTING TIPS
6 Ways to Help Your Child Deal with Peer Pressure
By GreatSchools Staff
Don’t overreact
When your child talks with you about
what friends are doing, you may hear
things that upset you. But if you
overreact or lecture, your child won’t
want to bring these issues up again.
Stay as calm as you can, without yelling,
blaming, of lecturing. Instead, use these
moments to get your child thinking
about the consequences of risky
behavior: “I wonder if your friend realizes
she could be arrested for shoplifting?”
Talk about what makes a true friend
Help your child understand that a friend
who is pressuring him to do something
dangerous, hurtful, or illegal is not much
of a friend.
Get to know your child’s friends
Encourage your child to invite friends
home. Having his peers around will help
you decide whether they are good or bad
influences.
Talk about what independence really
means
At this age, your child wants more
independence. Point out that if this is a
goal of his, he shouldn’t let other kids
decide what she should be doing —
that’s not independence!
Role play peer pressure
Ask your child what he wishes he could
say to his friends if he didn’t have to
worry about what they’d say if he said
“No.” Then suggest ways he can say
it. Keep your advice short and to the
point. Remind him it’s easiest to stick
with simple things that he can say
comfortably. (Check out “Five steps to
resisting peer pressure” for ideas on
what your child can say to a friend who
is pressuring him.)
Model saying “No”
When your child hears you setting
limits clearly, firmly, and without a lot of
explanation, this helps him see that it’s
OK to do the same. When you say, “No,
that’s not okay with me,” you’re giving
your child the same language he can
say when someone tries to talk him into
doing something he shouldn’t.
CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH
CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH
5 Ways to teach our children Acceptance
By Elayna Fernandez
Teach them “The Work.”
Are you familiar with The Work of Byron
Katie? It is summarized on a rhyme ,
which my girls made into a little song:
“judge your neighbor, write it down, ask
four questions, turn it around.” This is
a very helpful tool to help us not only
accept, but change our perception with
regard to others’ behaviors:
We catch ourselves having a judgmental
thought about another person, which
causes us pain, separation and/or
suffering.
We write it down, then ask the questions:
a. Is it true?
b. Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
c. How do you react, what happens, when
d. you believe that thought?
e. Who would you be without the thought?
We turn the thought around, which helps
us ground and humble ourselves with the
real truth.
Create practicing opportunities
Make room for opportunities in which you
can observe your child interacting with
other kids, and observe his or her level of
acceptance and inclusion. See how your
child is accepted socially, as well, and talk
about what you observe, providing lovecentered
direction.
Teach them to love their bodies
Accepting others starts with accepting
ourselves. As our children grow, it is
necessary to teach them to love their
bodies and understand it is the body
they will have during their mortal
existence. Your child must learn to
embrace his/her body and develop a
great relationship with it and not make
it a target for self-defeat and criticism.
The fundamental principle is to make
clear that the way one looks is not and
should not be the yardstick with which
they measure their self-worth. While
it is healthy to want improvement and
growth; if we feel we must change in
order to be worthy of love or happiness,
we have gone too far.
Teach them to love variety
Many parents avoid the topic of
diversity because it is uncomfortable to
them or because they don’t feel qualified
enough to do so.
20
Open, direct communication helps a
child make smart decisions. You don’t
have to be a PhD to gain your child’s
trust. Honesty is all it takes. Be open
about the different flavors of humans
there are. We differ in appearance,
culture, religious beliefs, political views,
nationality, gender, marital status,
educational level, and in little things
like “favorite color.” Teach your child
to love and embrace others who are
different, and explain how they make the
world better and how it would be boring
without them.
Teach them to find common ground
Explaining how we are different is not
enough. Positive moms take the time
to teach kids, in word and by example,
that they must put an effort into finding
similarities that will help us connect with
others whose attributes weren’t instantly
attractive to us. Focusing on how we
are “the same” speeds up the process of
acceptance.
powerful tool, according to a commentary
The device that can control neural circuits using a
tiny brain implant controlled by a smartphone.
Creating devices that marry neural
stimulation with diagnostics could
someday enable the "fabrication and
operation of permanent 'cyborglike'
Smartphone-controlled Brains?
By Nina Lichtenberg
A team of scientists in Korea and the
United States has developed a tiny,
flexible, wireless device that can control
neurons and neural circuits in the mouse
brain - and employs smartphones as its
remote control.
According to an article published in the
journal Nature Biomedical Engineering,
researchers believe this device can
speed up efforts to understand
brain diseases such as Parkinson's,
Alzheimer's, drug addiction, depression,
and pain.
The invention couples an ultrathin probe
with LEDs, microfluidic channels, and
Lego-like replaceable drug cartridges
that can be easily swapped out. The goal
is to target specific neurons of interest
using drugs and light for prolonged time
periods.
"The wireless device enables chronic
chemical and optical neuromodulation
that has never been achieved before,"
said lead author Raza Qazi, a researcher
with the Korea Advanced Institute of
Science and Technology (KAIST) and
University of Colorado Boulder.
Qazi said the technology represents a
giant leap forward from conventional
methods used by neuroscientists,
which usually involve rigid metal tubes
and optical fibers to deliver drugs and
light into the brain. These devices limit
the subject's movement with bulky
equipment and often damage brain
tissue over time, making the implants
not suitable for long-term use. Even
better - the device is controlled by a
simple, elegant user interface on a
smartphone, making it possible to set up
For now, authors have only used the
device in mice. But researchers aim to
develop the technology for humans,
overcoming the existing limitations
of conventional drug delivery and
optogenetics. One day, the device could
be modified to extract liquids or samples
from the brain, which would make it a
