38 The Star Thursday September 12 2019 I have had the wonderful opportunity to be part of The Sydenham Red Dragon Whanau from their first season in 2008, (age 5), to an undefeated 2019 season and back to back Champions as Cashmere High U16. Cashmere High School were offered the opportunity to tour Japan. Organised by KJANZ and supported by the local government in Awate Prefecture. 20 Red Dragon students were selected to represent their school. This tour is to develop a future global youth programme between countries and to support people recovering from large natural disasters. We will be supporting the All Blacks on their quest to three peat at the Rugby World Cup. The lads will also have the opportunity to play rugby and be immersed into Japanese cultural, homestay and sightseeing adventures. in brief Cats and Cavaliers hockey campaigns The Canterbury Cavaliers and the Cats both begin their weeklong National Hockey League campaigns in Tauranga on Saturday. The Cavaliers will face North Harbour, Midlands and Southern in pool A of the men’s competition, while the Cats will face North Harbour, Auckland and Southern in their pool of the women’s tournament. The Cats last won in 2016. However, the Cavaliers will be hunting their first national crown since 2005. Uni shoot for another basketball title Canterbury University can claim back-to-back premier club basketball titles when they face Pioneer on Saturday. At the weekend UC’s 3x3 side finished seventh at the 3x3. EXE premier tournament in Tokyo. They defeated a side from Thailand before being knocked out by eventual champions Utsunomiya from Japan. Their final on Saturday tips off at Cowles Stadium at 5.20pm. It will follow the premier women’s final between Lincoln University and North Canterbury at 3.40pm. Beck plays 100th game for Bulldogs Jason Beck, who has been No 35 for the Christchurch Bulldogs since 2008, brought up his 100th cap for the side on Saturday. Beck is treasurer of the Canterbury Australian Football League and has received volunteer of the year and clubman of the year awards in the past. Amazingly Beck only took up the sport after moving to Christchurch from Southland aged 38. On Saturday he helped the Bulldogs go top of the table with a 66-48 win over Mid-Canterbury Eagles. • By Gordon Findlater CANTERBURY United Pride begin the defence of their National Women’s League title when they host Capital at English Park on Sunday. Pride coach Alana Gunn will have a tough task putting together a full strength team for the opening round with more than half a dozen of the 22 players recently named in the full Pride squad unavailable due to national team commitments or injury. She’s confident the defending champions will have a strong starting 11, but admits the bench will lack depth. Lara Wall, Gabi Rennie, Tahlia Herman-Watt, Marisa Van der Meer are all unavailable due to being away with the New Zealand under-19 team in Rarotonga. Macey Fraser and Britney- Lee Nicholson are expected to be PLAYMAKER: Tevin Arona will co-captain the Canterbury Bulls with Linwood prop Alex Todd. Earlier games for next Super Rugby season NEXT YEAR’S Super Rugby schedule has been announced and the competition will have its earliest ever start date on February 1. The Bulls squad assembled for the first time on August 14 and have been training on field for the past two weeks ahead of the fourteam premiership. The last time the Bulls met the Falcons it ended their season with a 14-34 loss. “They’re the benchmark in terms of the competition,” said Bulls coach Andrew Auimatagi. This year’s side will be cocaptained by Hornby half Tevin Arona and Linwood prop Alex Todd, taking over from James Baxendale who has chosen to concentrate on playing duties this season. Arona helped the Bulls make their last grand-final appearance in 2016, but has spent the last two years in Auckland before returning to Christchurch earlier this year. He will combine with fellow Hornby half Brad Campbell who impressed in his debut campaign 12 months ago. “He [Arona] adds a lot of leadership in the halves,” said Auimatagi. “With Brad [Campbell] now in his second year of the premiership I’m excited to see how they’ll shape.” Auimatagi is also aware of the importance of every minute of the three match round-robin. Last year the Bulls missed out to potentially miss the whole season due to injury. Last year the Pride won nine and lost three of their 12 roundrobin games to advance to the final where they defeated top qualifiers Northern Lights 3-2 after extra-time. The goal this year will be to once again make the grand final come December. “I think we’ve got a stronger squad than last year, so our first goal will be to get to the final,” said Gunn. After lingering at the bottom of the premiership a fortnight ago Canterbury are now looking like title contenders. Northland are second on a spot in the final due to a a points differential eight points worse than Counties Manukau. “There’s no time to take the foot off the pedal. In the past it’s come down to small periods in play that have let us down.” Saturday’s match at Auckland’s Pulman Park kicks-off at 3pm.
