FORMER MAYOR Garry
Moore has been accused of
attempting to derail Darryll
Park’s campaign for the
mayoralty.
Mr Moore wrote an article
in his weekly Tuesday Club
e-newsletter claiming a group
of business people looking for a
challenger to incumbent Mayor
Lianne Dalziel were turned
down a number of times before
approaching Darryll Park.
Mr Moore described Mr Park
in the e-newsletter as “welldown-the-list
Darryll” and
criticised his campaign promise
of zero rates.
Mr Park would not discuss the
COMMUNITY BOARDS have
taken little notice of Darryll
Park’s idea to cut funding to
neighbourhood barbecues in
order to decrease rates.
At a major mayoral debate last
week, Mr Park said he would
need to cut $100 million over
three years from the city council
budget in order to achieve his
fundamental campaign promise
of zero rates.
When asked how he would
matter with The Star yesterday,
leaving that to his campaign
manager David Lynch.
Mr Lynch said there was “a
lot of misrepresentation in the
article.”
do this he said he would look
at cutting community funding,
such as neighbourhood
barbecues. This sparked a public
backlash and was ridiculed
by incumbent mayor Lianne
Dalziel during the debate.
Since Mr Park made his
comments, 79 barbecues have
been approved by community
boards.
The Papanui-Innes Community
Board approved $4000 for
barbecues.
“I think it is an attempt to
dissuade people from voting for
Darryll, end of story. Whether
there was a list or not the fact is
at least Darryll is brave enough
to put his life on hold and put
member of the board to vote
against the applications.
Mr Stringer said he favoured
Mr Park’s proposal.
“Providing people with a piece
of bread and a cold sausage is
not core council knitting,” he
said.
The Coastal Burwood Community
Board approved $2500
of barbecues.
City councillor and board
member Glenn Livingstone
dismissed Mr Park’s comments
as “panicked’’ and said the
up with this nonsense,” said Mr
Lynch.
“Garry can go and play in his
electoral campaign sandpit for as
long as he likes, we are not going
to go there,” he said.
Asked if the he thought the article
was aimed at benefiting Ms
Dalziel’s campaign, Mr Lynch
said: “We know they are both
very good friends.”
Mr Moore said he stood by the
article.
He refuted suggestions that
he was attempting to derail Mr
Park’s campaign to benefit Ms
Dalziel.
“My issue is policy and if
Lianne had a policy wrong I
would tell her.”
Neighbourhood barbecues on the menu
barbecues were good value for
money and a great way of bringing
communities together.
The Banks Peninsula
Community Board also
approved $1250 funding towards
barbecues.
Community Board deputy
chairman Tyrone Fields
labelled Mr Park’s comments as
“moronic.”
“The barbecues cost very little
and the social outcomes from
them massively outweigh the
costs,” he said.
City voters
slower
to enrol
• By Louis Day
SO FAR, a lower percentage of
Christchurch residents have
enrolled for October’s local body
elections than in 2016.
Latest figures released
yesterday show by the end of last
month, 83.2 per cent of residents
had enrolled, a slight decrease
from the 84.4 per cent that
enrolled by the end of August,
2016, and down from 85.9 per
cent who enrolled at the same
time in 2013.
Voting for the local body elections
opens tomorrow.
Lincoln University senior
lecturer Dr Jean Drage did not
think this was a trend restricted
to Christchurch.
“I think this is a case of what we
are seeing worldwide, with voter
turnout and interest falling and
we see this in local government
elections and national government
elections,” she said.
“This is part of a bigger thing
that is happening here with the
value of democracy falling, I
think people really don’t understand
how valuable democracy is
any more.”
Dr Drage thought lowering
the voter age to 16 would help
increase enrolment and voter turn
