• Light Party
• In Touch
• New Staff
• Mission
and more ...

I am not sure how many days there are to
Christmas (!) but one of the triggers for me
that the Season is coming is when we start
promoting our Childrens and Families Light
Party. (See the article that follows)
I know Christmas can’t be far away not
just when the clocks go back and the days
are darker sooner, but when at the end of
the October half term holiday we hold our
alternative Halloween. Let’s pray that this
positive event may attract many.
But of course there’s so much else that
will happen between now and Advent.
And keeping up with it all is an increasing
challenge!
I have certainly found that to be true
since resuming the full routines and
responsibilities of pastoral ministry here. I
have spent the last few weeks playing catch
up with the different aspects of our Church
life. I have been asking the who’s who…?
And the what’s what …? questions. So it has
been encouraging to learn about all the good
things that have been going on among us,
the ideas, developments, changes that are
being planned.
The life cycle of a Community like ours
means that this term feels like the
beginning of a new year. So the fresh
initiatives among our Kids, Youth and
Families programme, the arrival on Staff of
Ngaira Smith and Emily Muwowo are just a
few of the aspects in which I have rejoiced.
Each of us has to play catch up with what
the Lord is doing, all the time. For God is
always on the move. Sometimes that can be
unnerving. But absorbed into our journey of
faith, it can be inspiring.
Light
Party
fun for families with children
Exciting news
about something that will definitely
be happening on October the 31 st !
Our annual Light Party will be
held at Woodbury Avenue between
5pm and 7pm. Light Parties are a
Christian alternative for Halloween,
and a great way of reaching out
to our community with the good
news of Jesus. This year’s party is
perfectly placed in half term, a free
event, and on the day itself; so we
are expecting a great turn out!
This event is aimed at families
with children to attend togetherwe
cannot allow unaccompanied
children. So please children bring a
grown-up to enjoy the fun with!
We will be having inflatables for
younger and older children, face
painting, crafts, crazy party dances,
sensory room and a gunge game!
Someone is going to get gunged, will
it be you? The event will finish with
a talk, food, goody bags and sweets.
Please sign up via the church
website:
lansdownechurch.uk/light
to help us with numbers for catering
and come dressed in your brightest
sparkliest outfits.
If you would like to help in this
important outreach, please see
a member of the families team
or contact (family.events@
In Touch
Helping the homeless
and those in need
In Touch is grateful to be receiving this
year’s harvest produce - stock levels are
low. Please use this leaflet which lists the
most useful items.
In Touch is so much more than the provision
of food.
During the past year we have witnessed
many answers to prayers:
The provision of stock just when we need it,
Bookers and Citygate church sharing fresh
produce with us.
5/6 long term rough sleepers settled into
housing.
Employment for some guests.
Twice a week, 52 weeks of the year In Touch
serves hot food, provides friendship and
comfort to the homeless and disadvantaged
in Bournemouth, operating at St Augustin’s.
In Touch is a large team of volunteers -
they are a wonderful bunch, a hardworking
dedicated team. Among them are mental
health professionals, experts in the benefit
system and a paramedic. As volunteers they
prepare food, sort clothes and lay tables.
The hall is filled with laughter, chat and
maybe the odd chicken impression!
On opening tea and coffee is served...
never underestimate the power of a hot
cuppa. Guests are served with dignity and
respect, building relationships. The food
is appreciated but so too is the friendship,
company and support that the volunteers
provide.
Two people each week supply home baked
cakes and biscuits for the guests.
An elderly couple who every month buy huge
quantities of underwear and socks.
While we assist with housing advice and
supply food, clothing and toiletries, it is
the hope of Our Lord Jesus that is most
important. Time spent talking to a guest
who is in mental health crisis or struggling
with addiction or who is lonely is beyond
value.
Volunteers often look exhausted as we
close, however I’m sure that they have been
blessed and heartened to see the Lord’s
provision and love for our guests, who are
on the margins of society, but who are much
loved and valued by him.
Mission at Lansdowne
“Go and make disciples of all nations” Matt 28:20
As we seek to apply Jesus’ command, our vision for
mission at Lansdowne is to..
make disciples, from our networks to the nations as we
tell the gospel and love the lost.
make disciples
There are many different avenues through which we
engage together in mission. In every one, our aim is the
same – to make disciples of Christ. Giving all our effort
and resources in calling people to lay down their lives,
follow Jesus, and urge others to do the same.
networks to the nations
This mission begins on our doorstep, the people we know
most closely, but it never stops at these networks. God’s
heart is for a worshipping people from every tribe, tongue
and nation. As a church we are committed to reaching the
unreached.
telling the gospel and loving the lost
People need to hear the gospel and experience it in our
lives. This means doing everything we can to love people
in practical ways without ever failing to love them, most
of all, by telling them the good news that Jesus Christ is
Lord.
We aspire to see…
Every Member and Every Ministry, Participating,
Partnering and Praying
Participation
Partnership
Prayer
Every follower of Jesus has a part to
play in God’s work of mission
We never do this alone – joining hands
locally and globally
This is God’s work, making prayer our
priority
The Mission Board has strategic responsibility to oversee
the whole church’s engagement in this great work both
locally and globally. The Mission Council is the operating
arm of the Mission Board for global mission. If you would
like to be more involved or would like to investigate how
your area of ministry might engage more fully in mission
please do speak to one of those on these teams.
Welcome to our new staff members
Over the last month,
we’ve been delighted to welcome Emily
Muwowo and Ngaira Smith onto our staff
team.
Emily is our new Student Ministry
Coordinator.
She brings with
her a wealth
of experience
working with
students,
both here in
Bournemouth
and across
the UK and
Europe. Emily
has previously
served in student evangelism alongside
Michael Ots, and most recently with UCCF
as the staff worker for Bournemouth
and Winchester Christian Unions. With
the ongoing expansion of Bournemouth
University and the Arts University, the
student community is a crucial context for
us to be making and maturing disciples and
we’re thrilled that Emily has agreed to lead
this work.
Ngaira joins the staff team as our new
International Ministry Coordinator, with
a deep passion for sharing the gospel with
international people. She trained for crosscultural
work
at Bible college
in Sydney
and has since
been involved
in trips to
Vietnam, Laos,
Zimbabwe,
Niger and
Benin.
Alongside her
work as an occupational therapist, Ngaira
will be leading our growing work among
those who’ve come to Bournemouth from
around the world. Recently we’ve seen how
fruitful this area of ministry can be and
we’re so excited to see what God will do in
the lives of international people that we
encounter in the years to come.
With the arrival of so many new students,
studying in Bournemouth’s universities,
colleges and language schools, this is an
extremely busy time for both Emily and
Ngaira. Please do pray for them as they
settle into their new roles, that God would
give them the energy, wisdom and grace to
serve him well.
