TESHUVA
A Message from Our Rabbis
Mario Rojzman & Ed Farber
“ ...returning to the right path – returning to our real
selves – returning to what it was that made for successful
religious institutions; successful and caring communities
and peace and prosperity for our nation.”
There is a story about a monastery that had fallen
on hard times. There were only five monks left in the
decaying mother house: the Abbot and four others,
all over seventy in age. Clearly it was a dying order.
In the deep woods surrounding the monastery there
was a little hut that a Rabbi from a nearby town
occasionally used for a retreat. The Abbot was very
much aware of the Rabbi’s presence in the forest
and he decided one time to visit him and ask the
Rabbi if by some possible chance he could offer any
advice that might save the monastery.
The Rabbi welcomed the Abbot at his hut. But when
the Abbot explained the purpose of his visit, the
Rabbi could only commiserate with him. “I know
how it is,” he exclaimed. “The spirit has gone out
of the people. It is the same in my town. Almost no
one comes to the synagogue anymore.” So the old
Abbot and the old Rabbi wept together. Then they
read parts of the Torah and quietly spoke of deep
things. The time came when the Abbot had to leave.
They embraced each other. “It has been a wonderful
thing that we should meet after all these years, “the
Abbot said, “but I have still failed in my purpose for
coming here. Is there nothing you can tell me, no piece
of advice you can give me that would help me save my
dying order?”
“No, I am sorry,” the Rabbi responded. “I have no
advice to give. The only thing I can tell you is that the
Messiah is one of you.”
When the Abbot returned to the monastery his
fellow monks gathered around him to ask, “Well what
did the Rabbi say?” “He couldn’t help,” the Abbot
answered. “We just wept and read the Torah together.
The only thing he did say, just as I was leaving --it was
6 BETH TORAH TIMES

something cryptic-- was that the Messiah is one of
us. I don’t know what he meant.”
In the days and weeks and months that followed,
the old monks pondered this and wondered
whether there was any possible significance to the
Rabbi’s words. The Messiah is one of us? Could he
possibly have meant one of us monks here at the
monastery? If that’s the case, which one? Do you
suppose he meant the Abbot? Yes, if he meant
anyone, he probably meant Father Abbot. He has
been our leader for more than a generation. On the
other hand, he might have meant Brother Thomas.
Certainly Brother Thomas is a holy man. Everyone
knows that Thomas is a man of light. Certainly he
could not have meant Brother Elred! Elred gets
crotchety at times. But come to think of it, even
though he is a thorn in people’s sides, when you look
back on it, Elred is virtually always right. Often very
right. Maybe the Rabbi did mean Brother Elred. But
surely not Brother Phillip. Phillip is so passive, a real
nobody. But then, almost mysteriously, he has a gift
for somehow always being there when you need
him. He just magically appears by your side. Maybe
Phillip is the Messiah. Of course, the Rabbi didn’t
mean me. He couldn’t possibly have meant me.
I’m just an ordinary person. Yet supposing he did?
Suppose I am the Messiah? O God, not me. I couldn’t
be that much for You, could I?
As they contemplated in this manner, the old monks
began to treat each other with extraordinary respect
on the off chance that one among them might be
the Messiah. And on the off chance that each monk
himself might be the Messiah, they began to treat
themselves with extraordinary respect.
Because the forest in which it was situated
was beautiful, it so happened that people still
occasionally came to visit the monastery to picnic
on its tiny lawn, to wander along some of its paths,
even now and then to go into the dilapidated chapel
to meditate. As they did so, without even being
conscious of it, they sensed the aura of extraordinary
respect that now began to surround the five old
monks and seemed to radiate out from them and
permeate the atmosphere of the place. There was
something strangely attractive, even compelling, about
it. Hardly knowing why, they began to come back to
the monastery more frequently to picnic, to play, to
pray. They began to bring their friends to show them
this special place. And their friends brought their
friends.
Then it happened that some of the younger men who
came to visit the monastery started to talk more and
more with the old monks. After a while one asked if he
could join them. Then another. And another. So within
a few years the monastery had once again become a
thriving order and, thanks to the Rabbi’s gift, a vibrant
center of light and spirituality in the realm.
It’s a beautiful story – no? Its lesson is simple but
profound. People will come to a synagogue because
it’s a place where people are good, kind and helpful to
each other. People come to places that make them feel
good about the place, about themselves, about others.
Kids come home from college to visit because they
want to be home. It’s comforting – it’s reassuring. We
think Beth Torah is a place people feel good being at,
being part of or just visiting. It’s because of the people
here – the way they welcome strangers and new
people and care for each other. We need that in our
country as well. We’re losing that ‘small town’ feeling
– that ‘safe place’ feeling. We need leaders up and
down and across the board – local and national who
give out an aura of caring and respect. That’s how they
saved their monastery – treating each other as people
created in the image of God. That’s the theme of the
High Holy Days: Teshuvah – returning to the right
path – returning to our real selves – returning to what
it was that made for successful religious institutions;
successful and caring communities and peace and
prosperity for our nation.
Happy, healthy and sweet New Year.
BERESHIT-
RETURN TO THE GENESIS
A Message from Our Cantor
Gastón Bogomolni
I ask you and I would like you to answer yourself with
your own thoughts, with your own heart:
If you had the opportunity to be that special soul in
the celestial chamber of souls and have the possibility
of being reborn, choose your parents, your brothers,
your environment, the country in which you were
born, what would you choose? What would you
change?
Suppose that instead of going back so far you have an
opportunity to return to a point in your life and once
there, start all over again from that same place. What
would that episode be? That moment?
What makes you feel the idea of going back? What
makes you feel the idea of the those opportunities to
remake, be reborn, to choose, to change, to remove,
to redirect, to modify?
There is something in this idea of being able to go back
to the past and change things and to be able to return
to a point in our lives and reset and start over again
that gives us some pleasure. Apple computers provide
a backup system called a “time capsule” that allows
you to go to any of the points where the machine
made a copy of the system and the files. Countless
were the times I was able to use the time capsule
which allowed me to go back to that specific point I
needed. The relief is indescribable!
What is it about having the chance to start over
that makes us feel good? It reminds me of all these
films based on the idea of Deja Vu, where the main
character has the chance to start again the same day
as if nothing had happened. The only way to stop with
that day is to repeat yourself by realizing what is that
you have to learn about that day, about some person,
about humanity, about yourself, learn to be better
every time that day presents to you until the lesson is
really learned. But again, what a relief when you can
realize what that specific mission is, that Tikun that you
have to repair, to solve.
Da capo is the term that musicians use to say: “back
to the beginning” literally means “from the head
(above).” I love this expression because it gives you the
opportunity to play the musical piece again and again
and clean up any mistakes that you could have made
during the first time. Sometimes it just gives you a new
angle to the texture, dynamics, or the sound of the
song. Maybe the piece was played perfectly the first
time and back to the beginning doesn’t add any new
perspective to the game and that is fine too, however,
there is something about going back to the beginning
that makes us feel good, we get some pleasure and it
feels like a second chance.
Back in Argentina I loved listening to a quartet called
Les Luthier and it was not until the second time
through that I understood the joke, or that it was by
the fourth time through that I got yet another very
subtle joke. Listening to things for a second or more
times also gives you the opportunity to pay attention
to details and bits that we probably didn’t hear the
first time. I have the habit of recording my singing and
rabbinical studies classes so that I can hear during the
week what my ear lost the first time. How many times
8 BETH TORAH TIMES

do we watch the same movie several times, at different
times in our lives and the messages and the power
of analysis and understanding we receive are diverse,
deeper or more ephemeral but at the same time
different.
Starting over as if nothing happened when you already
messed up it is a blessing, but let’s face it, we don’t
always have that blessing. When you think you made
the wrong decision and failed, then you ask yourself:
where did I fail? When did all this happen? I wish I had
never made that decision... and you want to hide from
the world.
Then you repeat to yourself: If I only could start over...
Starting over helps us grow. At least having the mental
and spiritual idea that you are starting over is already
a great opportunity for growth. Going back to the
genesis of a situation helps you understand many
things, recreating the scene of an entire episode forces
us to think, to remember, to witness our achievements
and our mistakes, being an observer allows us to pause
the movie, feel, reflect, rewind, look again and be able
to understand, learn and move on.
Going back to the genesis of our history, of our lives,
helps us to investigate, find out who we really are and
see what we are made of. Rummaging until finding
yourself gives you the most precious and divine
opportunity on the planet to stand in front of your own
soul, to your purest essence that God (Hashem) gave
us when we came to this world.
I left Argentina 22 years ago and 90% of my visits begin
the same way: from the airport to the cemetery to visit
my ancestors and my beloved ones. They constantly
remind me, not only where I come from, but that when
one day I will leave this physical world there will no
money or valuable belongings that go with us to the
Olam Haba (the world to come). They only take their
essence and return to the grave as they arrived in the
world during childbirth, without clothes and without
material goods, only your essence accompanies you.
These visits to the cemetery reminds me of two coins
that were given to me 4 years ago by Steven Scheck:
one of them I occasionally carry in my right pocket
and the second in my left pocket. When I feel that my
arrogance and pride is taking over me, that is, when I
live it, like it and believe that I am the greatest, I take
out the one on the right that tells me: “I AM NOT
MORE THAN DUST AND ASHES” REMEMBER WHERE
YOU COME FROM”......
But when I feel defeated and frustrated and tired of
trying, the coin on the left tells me: “BY MY MERITS
AND MY WELFARE THE WORLD WAS CREATED” “AND
YOU WILL BE JOYED!”
In fact when I feel that I am not being a good educator
with my Bar Mitzvah students, I go back to my
genesis, to that Hazzan that nourished me with peace,
patience, passion and fervor and because of him I am a
better professional. When I don’t like how my voice is
sounding or I think it sounds too operatic, I go back to
my genesis and remember the sweet and simple voice
of when I was 13 years old.
Very soon we will be returning to the genesis of
genesis, the creation of the world, and after Simchat
Torah we will be restarting the Torah again. The Torah
is untouchable and as our sages have said there is no
extra word in it, so the text is the same every year
and we read it again. The ones that change are us. It
is like the book, the movie, or the joke we repeat over
and over again, the content is the same, but how we
perceive it and the values we rescue from it depend
only on our intellectual, spiritual growth and maturity.
Despite my failures, my crises, the mistakes made,
or my life decisions I still wonder daily: If I had the
opportunity to be that soul in the celestial chamber
of souls and have the possibility of being reborn, of
re-choosing my parents, my brothers, my environment,
the country in which I was born, what would I choose?
What would I change?
And my answer would be: absolutely nothing.
May the Creator of the universe allow us all to
rediscover in this new year 5780 our genesis to
understand how valuable we are to not only to
make a better “I”, but to return to the main motive
of our existence, to raise our consciousness and to
realize how much we can contribute positively to this
beautiful creation that Hashem Yitbarach gave us.
Hashivenu Adonai Eleicha v’nashuba (return us to
you, Hashem, and we will return) Chadesh Yameinu
K’Kedem (restore our days as of old, our genesis, where
our soul was born for the first time).
THE 3 T’S
OF BTBRC
What’s Going On HERE?
A Message from Our President Rich Berger
It is an honor and privilege to be the President of our
Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus community. Thank you
for this opportunity.
Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) tells us that “the world
stands on three things – Teshuva, Tefilla and Tzedaka.”
These 3 T’s describe our Beth Torah and how we relate
to each other and to our community both locally and in
Israel as well.
Teshuva – repentance – reminds us that none of us are
perfect, and that when we make mistakes we need to
apologize to others. In this past year, we have tried to
reach out to the community, and if we have not been
able to be in touch with you, I apologize for that. We
have found that with a large community, it is not easy
to engage everyone. Therefore, we have hired a new
Director of Engagement and Programming, Dr. Andrea
Beck (abeck@btbrc.org), who will be helping us to
be sure that your voices are heard and your thoughts
on improvements for BTBRC are taken into account.
Look for the expanded Program Guide (to be mailed in
September) which will show you all of the events for
2019/2020 that are already scheduled to take place at
Beth Torah…you may be surprised at the opportunities
for making new friends by coming to any of them.
Tefilla – prayer – means that we are open for praying
all year – we are here every day from daily Minyan, to
Shabbat services, to baby namings, B’nai Mitzvot and
being here for Shiva as well. Our clergy, Rabbi Rojzman,
Rabbi Farber and Cantor Bogomolni, are superb
and listening to them gives new insights on life. The
diversity of our membership and friends is amazing…
just come and participate in our Friday night B’Yachad
service to see not only “what” we pray, “to whom” we
pray, but also “with whom” we pray. It is very spiritual
and moving. Sometimes we can’t make it in person
to synagogue, yet the need to be connected to our
services remains. Our livestream (http://www.btbrc.
org/livestreaming/) of both the Friday night and Shabbat
morning services allows you to participate real-time, or
10 BETH TORAH TIMES

to go back to a previous service or sermon and listen to
it at your convenience. Every holiday we have special
programming. This past Purim was great in that we
had various “stations” that allowed families to create
Purim items and learn about the holiday…and then all
participated in a Megillah reading. On Simchat Torah,
we dance with the Torahs and unroll one to be able to
see all of the words of the Torah from the first “B’reishit”
to the last word “Israel”. These are ways to pray
together with the community and enjoy our traditions.
Tzedaka – charity – is also called Tikkun Olam – repairing
the world through deeds of lovingkindness. It is
here that Beth Torah shines. Most noticeable is our
Social Action Team who visits the sick, collects for the
homeless, helps to feed those without food and brings
together people from all parts of our community to
participate. Our Sisterhood supports the synagogue
and the community not only through donations of
money and all their great programs, but also a focus on
key health and wellness topics such as Breast Cancer
research education and support. Men’s Club provides
daily minyan breakfasts and does community service by
bringing Thanksgiving baskets to shut-ins. Our clergy
helps out people in need. This past year we hosted an
amazing program during Passover – a Special Mitzvah
Seder for people with physical and cognitive disabilities.
We had a tremendous outpouring of talent helping at
the event, which was an idea that came from a member
– Rabbi Geoff Botnick, and that we helped bring to
fruition and it now will be on our calendar annually.
Your ideas for programs can also expand our outreach.
This year we will continue to focus on the next
generation’s foundations of Judaism, engaging you all
in the programming, and much more. We are investing
in our Suzy Fischer Early Childhood Academy with a
new Director, Sandra Kopp (skopp@btbrc.org) and
expanded programs. Furthermore, our free Religious
School, under the leadership of Dr. Gaby Raskovsky
(graskovsky@btbrc.org) continues to grow as a home for
our families with school-age children. Our youth and
camp programs under the direction of Jeni Buchholz
(jbuchholz@btbrc.org) include our successful summer
program Camp Simcha which builds on the foundation
of our ECA to continue their learning in a camp setting.
Our award-winning USY (United Synagogue Youth)
program engages our high school aged students on a
weekly basis and in the Kadima program we are in the
process of expanding experiences for middle-school
students. We stay in touch with our BT students who
go off to college through our BT College Connection
(btcollegeconnection@btbrc.org). These all represent
fun opportunities for our children to make new friends
and stay connected with Beth Torah.
A synagogue is a complex business as well as being
our spiritual home. Under the leadership of our Chief
Operating Officer, Wayne Keil (wkeil@btbrc.org),
we have strengthened our security in these days of
heightened worry, and have worked to beautify the
property. Many times these are items you don’t see,
yet they contribute to the overall strength of Beth
Torah. Our Director of Development, Marshall Baltuch
(mbaltuch@btbrc.org), interacts with all our congregants
as he coordinates our annual High Holy Day appeal and
other major fund raisers. Your financial support enables
us to be sure that we can pay all of the bills to keep the
synagogue running. All of the members of our support
staff truly help Beth Torah run and provide an up-beat
attitude to all who interact with Beth Torah.
Our synagogue thrives due to the efforts of volunteers.
Thanks go to our Executive Committee, Board of
Directors and leaders of major committees such as
Comité Latino, Culture Club, Adult Education, Ways
& Means and ECA parents (Kool’Am) who put in their
time and effort on behalf of us all. I could not do this
job without the partnership with our Executive Vice
President, Jill Koch and her innovative ideas.
Finally, because our thematic focus for this year is
“engagement”, we are working to ensure that all our
members, from the youngest to the oldest and in all of
our diverse membership, find opportunities for BTBRC to
be part of their lives as a community gathering place.
On behalf of my wife Judy and
myself, we wish you Shana Tova – a
year of health, happiness and a year
of fun at Beth Torah.
THE POWER
OF A SMILE
A Message from Our Chief Operating Officer
Wayne Keil
What’s with a smile? What does it mean? Why
do we do it? How is it so contagious? We long for
a smile, don’t we? The first thing we get excited
about as parents is when our child smiles for the
first time. It’s always the first sign of happiness.
When we get that first smile we always ask our
spouse, “Are you sure it was a smile?” And then you
know what happens? To decide if it was a smile, we
do something to elicit the same reaction. We smile
at our child.
The smile is a simple, yet very powerful tool. In
fact, the smile is even spoken of in Pirkei Avot.
Shammai says, “Make your Torah study regular; say
little and do much; and greet every person with a
smile.” Ethics of the Fathers, 1:15
The great 20th century Rabbi Avraham Karelitz, also
known as the Chazon Ish, explained why: our inner
feelings affect only us, but the countenance we
show to the world affects the mood and happiness
of those around us too. Rabbi Yisroel Salanter said
that our faces – and our expressions – are like
public property; they give us the power to help
or harm everyone we meet. This means that we
have the obligation to smile, even though we may
feel pained on the inside. We live in a world of
others and the very expression of our face can affect
the mood of another human being. Happiness is
contagious. You have an obligation to make others
feel happy; and certainly not to make them feel sad.
My job isn’t always easy and can be awfully hard at
times. Sometimes, I am ashamed to admit, it can
be hard to smile. Thankfully for me and the other
professionals on staff, we are in a building filled with
smiling kids, and we can just walk out our door and
into a hallway and we can get smiles. One of the
best parts of my day is when I have a meeting with
a member who needs help. Being able to help that
person and have them leave with a smile, well, it
makes it all worth it.
Life is short. Bad things happen. They happen when
we least expect it and there is nothing we can do
about it sometimes. But we can still smile. In fact,
it would seem the sages are telling us it is our
obligation to smile. Therefore, let’s all smile a little bit
more and make those around us smile.
I wish all of you a wonderful New
Year filled with lots of smiles!
Wayne Keil
BEGIN ANEW…
A Message from Our ECA Director
Sandra Kopp
We have opened the page of a brand new book, blank pages to be filled with moments of awe, times
of inquiry, discovery, and relationship building. A new school year has begun, and I am honored to
share this journey with our amazing ECA staff and Beth Torah’s diverse, vibrant, and thriving community.
The excitement that permeates our Early Childhood program, heightened by the sounds of happy
children is difficult to describe, but without a doubt, it is “in the air”. The Suzy Fischer Academy has
truly come alive with the energy of our students, the warmth of the families, and teachers who are
committed to nurture, teach, and actively engage the children to create meaningful experiences.
I would like to take this opportunity to share with you about a new initiative that our community will
be taking part of. Through CAJE, with generous funding from the Greater Miami Jewish Federation,
the Jewish Resource Specialist (JRS) Initiative brings together five congregations and JCC’s who are establishing
this new teacher-leader position, whose focus is to strengthen engagement of families with
young children and deepen the Jewish learning within our Early Childhood Education Academy. I am
thrilled to be working alongside Marissa Halle, our liaison in this endeavor. Through intentional work
and programming, we will be transforming our Jewish Early Childhood program into a center of engagement
and significant learning that will impact our children, parents and the community at large.
Our tradition teaches us that personal journeys should not take place alone; the most sacred moments
are those experienced with others. I am honored to be embraced by the Beth Torah family and
I look forward to this new beginning.
May you have a year filled with sweetness,
A Message from Our Lifelong Learning
Director Dr. Gabriela Rascovsky
Dear Families,
Shalom! Welcome back!
We hope you had a relaxing summer and we resume
our routines re- energized to begin a new cycle.
Judaism in the 21st century is a time for dynamic,
authentic and meaningful choices, and we strive
to fulfill this goal as we engage members in a
welcoming, engaging and warm environment at our
Beth Torah Family. In our shul we breathe a true
sense of community, through daily, weekly, and
life cycle Jewish experiences. Through educational
options delivered in formal and informal settings,
from the Early Childhood all the way to adulthood.
We roll up our sleeves to put Jewish values in action,
we feel and instill the love to Eretz Israel from near
and far; in sum we offer lots of choices for all tastes
and ages. We want to thank you for choosing and
renewing your vows with us year after year, and
even more for spreading out the word amongst
your relatives and friends to expand our family.
We are very fortunate to have you, committed and
dedicated families who want to promote our Jewish
identity, preserve the Jewish legacy and help us give
essence to Jewish souls.
We are approaching the time of the year in
which almost every Jew around the globe visits
a synagogue; each one may seek or find a different
meaning to this visit. Some just attend because
of a family tradition; while others may be looking
introspectively into a spiritual journey, or in seek of
renewed meanings / new understandings based on
a stage in life. All search for meanings are valid and
individual to every member and every family. And so are
to us!
One New Year evokes another. This holy days season
may remind us of last year experience or provide us an
inspiration for the coming year. We are in the constant
search of creating new memories, and new experiences.
As we bake, brake and taste the round challah, it is
our hope for this chaguim time, to continue providing
you with the ritual, spiritual, social and communal
opportunities to find authentic and meaningful
opportunities that will nurture the essence of your
Jewish soul.
As always, please feel free to contact me at grascovsky@
btbrc.org or 305. 932.2829 x 7821 at any time.
Wishing you a happy and healthy 5780 filled with love
and blessings. Shana Tova U’Metuka.
Sincerely,
SIT TOGETHER
A Message from Our Director of Engagement
& Programing Andrea Beck
For as long as we can remember, we have sung the
words to Psalm 133 in various settings:
Hineh ma tov uma na’im
Shevet achim gam yachad.
How good and pleasant it is
For brothers and sisters to sit together.
Each year, Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus offers
its members and our South Florida community an
incredibly diverse array of programming and event
options that invite us to ‘sit together’. This year, that
tradition is growing in new and exciting ways through
Beth Torah’s increased emphasis on engagement. To that
end, I’d like to introduce myself - Dr. Andrea Beck - as
your new Director of Engagement and Programming.
Throughout my career I have held various professional
leadership and lay leadership positions in schools, and
within our Beth Torah community as well. Together with
my four year old son, Mayer, who is in our Suzy Fischer
Early Childhood Academy, I am personally invested in
celebrating Beth Torah’s rich history while working on
behalf of an equally bright future.
The programming goals for this year rest in us placing an
even greater emphasis on fostering deep connections
and values-based engagement with our members. Our
Clergy and staff have collaborated on long-standing
annual programs you have come to know and love, and
we have brainstormed to create new ideas as well, all
with one primary goal in mind: meeting YOUR needs
and interests. We realize that our offerings need to
be as diverse and as vibrant as our membership is.
Adult Education, Comite Latino, Culture Club, J2M,
Kadima, Mens Club, Scheck Family Religious School,
Sisterhood, USY, diverse Shabbat experiences, and
special Shabbatot provide a backbone for serviceoriented
projects, entertaining opportunities to build
community, and more.
Now more than ever, we hope to capitalize on the
transformative role 21st century communication
tools play in establishing a strategic, memberinspired
communication culture within Beth Torah.
Shul Cloud provides our members with a place to
sign up for programs, see membership data, and
even stay current on financial obligations while social
media has allowed us to introduce transformational
initiatives like ‘Sermon Snapshots’ to a global
audience.
A constantly-evolving engagement effort of this
magnitude can only be successful if it includes the
continuous feedback of our members. When our
2nd annual Program Guide arrives in your homes
at the end of September, please make note of
the programs and events you’re interested in and
inspired by. After the High Holidays, a special survey
will be sent to you. Within that survey, you will
have an opportunity to tell us about the programs,
groups, and initiatives you are most excited about,
as well as what may be missing for you specifically.
I look forward to collaborating directly with you on
ensuring Beth Torah has what you are looking for in
terms of programming and more. Together, today’s
efforts will ensure we always have the occasion to
invite our, “brothers and sisters to sit together.”
5780 school year.
We are thrilled to welcome you and your
to tailoring your student’s experience to
meet all needs. We look forward to engaging
further with each of you throughout the year
and create pathways of Jewish Learning for
every learner and family.
Focus of our supplementary
Jewish Education Program
The major focus of our program is the
development of our students’ abilities
in Hebrew language, building their
understanding of Jewish Life cycle events,
holidays, culture, and traditions, while
connecting them with Israel and with Jewish
heritage.
Religious School is also about enjoying being
Jewish and building Jewish friendships. The
balance between the formal classroom
instruction and the informal educational
family programs allow us to break away
from traditional methods of learning and
transform the community of learners into a
learning community while creating everlasting
memories and friendships.
Exciting news!
Message from our Social Action
Volunteers
When we started 4 years ago, our aim was to
help those in need within our community; good
intentions.......but we didn’t really know how and
where to start. After many brainstorming sessions,
we came to the conclusion that we needed to
start from the beginning: to meet our community
members! Through random acts of loving kindness
we engaged the elderly, youngsters, families and
individuals; together we learned about abused
single mothers and their challenges to provide
for their children and visited the shelters where
they live; we listened to stories from holocaust
survivors and their will to claim back their lives;
we stood in solidarity with victims of hurricanes
and learned about devastation and desperation
and made every effort to provide basic needs
to alleviate trauma. We joined families in their
mourning for their loved ones; rejoiced listening
to the incredible technology to save premature
babies. We fed the hungry, helped and interacted
with kids with autism and other disabilities,
collected and delivered school supplies for schools
in less privileged areas. Planted small plants
and raised awareness on the important role in
preserving our planet. We are committed in an
ongoing program to visit a nursing home, to sing
and to bring pets for the elderly and sick.
“It is when we become engaged with real people
and communities on the other end of our giving of
time and resources that we realize the covenantal
aspect of chesed.”
The purpose of those events is to mingle with our
Beth Torah members, get to know each other and
create a synergy that will allow to help one another
and understand the meaning of a supporting and
caring community..Kol Israel arevim ze le ze. Let’s
be responsible and make sure we never ignore the
suffering of others.
As one of our goals for this coming year we will strive
to mentor, together with J2M and Religious School,
children and youngsters and plant the seeds for
future generations to understand the meaning of
chesed .
We will focus most of our efforts to create a fund to
assist immediate needs for extremely difficult cases.
We wish our community Shana Tova,
may your tables be filled with honey,
sweet challa, apples, pomegranate
seeds and delicious dishes as a symbol
for happy, prosperous days to come.
May we all be inscribed in the Book
of Life and may we all be able to have
opportunities to do good deeds. Please
be ready for the call to volunteer!
. On Yom Kippur we will close the Main Parking Lot to general parking until 11am to ensure our older congregants have a place to
park. After 11am there will be limited spaces that will be open for general parking.
. There are a limited number of spots on NE 26th Avenue. Please do not park on the sidewalk next to our wall for security
reasons. Cars will be towed.
ENTERING THE SYNAGOGUE...
Each year we make every effort to ensure the safety of our Congregants and we kindly request that you please have the
following items available at all times:
1) YOUR HIGH HOLY DAY TICKETS
2) PHOTO ID (can be one of the following):
- YOUR BETH TORAH ID BADGE (you may get a new ID badge in the office during business hours)
- A PHOTO ID THAT MATCHES THE NAME ON THE TICKETS.
There will be one entrance gate at our security fence. Please have your tickets and IDs available so that we can get you
through security as quickly as possible.
TICKETS AND ID ARE REQUIRED TO ENTER THE SECURITY GATE.
We encourage you and your family to arrive early to avoid the busiest periods and possible lines at our security gate.
Between 10:30am and 11:30am are the times that most congregants choose to arrive at the synagogue. We especially
encourage you to arrive early on Kol Nidre Night as everyone arrives at the same time.
INSIDE THE SYNAGOGE...
TICKETS
We have spent the past few months assigning seats in the Scheck Family Sanctuary, Deakter Hall, Perez Chapel and in the
tent for the Spanish Services. We ask that you sit in your assigned seats at all times as Congregants arrive and leave on
various schedules.
. Your ticket will list your section, row and seat number.
. All seats are marked with section, row and seat numbers.
. Tickets are necessary for each of the services. Only those with the specific tickets will be admitted for each service.
. TRADITIONAL SERVICE (Brick red tickets) will take place in the Scheck Family Sanctuary, Sections 1-4 (I-IV) and the
Deakter Ballroom, Sections 5-12 (V-XII).
FAMILY SERVICES (Tan tickets) will take place in the Perez Chapel with open seating.
. SPANISH SERVICE (Beige tickets) will take place on Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur in the tent on the Mars Family Field.
. FEDERATION TICKETS (Blue tickets)– those holding Federation tickets are to sit in Sections 8, 10 or 12 in Deakter Hall.
USHERS
We have many dedicated Board Members as well as our Sisterhood and Men’s Club that assist us in helping our services
run smoothly. Please seek their assistance in locating your seats and please respect them when entering the Sanctuary.
There are many times in the service that entering could cause distractions. There will be times when the Scheck Family
Sanctuary doors will be closed and you will be asked to use the doors to Deakter Hall. Please follow the usher’s directions
at all times.
28 BETH TORAH TIMES

LOITERING IN THE LOBBY
We ask our congregants to restrict their activities in the lobby area during services. This poses both a security risk and a
disturbance to those members that are seated near the entranceways.
EREV ROSH HASHANAH
Sunday, September 9, 6:45pm; Family Service/Tashlich, Monday, September 10, 6:30pm; and Neilah, Wednesday,
September 19, 6:30pm
If you are planning to attend these Services there is no assigned seating. For Security reasons, if you wish to bring family or
friends who do not have tickets, they must have a valid ID to show at the door to be admitted. The English service will take
place in the Perez Chapel and the Spanish service will take place in the Scheck Family Sanctuary on Sunday, September 9.
All congregants will be together for the service on Monday evening September 10 . All congregants will be together for the
Neilah Service on Wednesday, September 19 to conclude the Yom Kippur Day.
SECOND DAY ROSH HASHANAH
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
On this day we will have open seating in the Scheck Family Sanctuary. Deakter Hall will be closed. Permanent seat
holders must reserve in advance and occupy their seats by 11am. After 11am the Rabbis will ask those in attendance to
fill in the spaces. Permanent seat holders should email skrug@btbrc.org to let us know they will be attending.
SECURITY INFORMATION
Each year we assess our security needs and this year is no different. We do this by having numerous meetings with our
security company, Homeland Security Officials, Federation and the police department. We are always looking to improve
our security and we are grateful for the cooperation that we have received in the past and look forward to having that
same cooperation once again. What you see on sight is carefully planned out for the safety of our congregants.
Here are some tips to help you enter the premises:
No person will be allowed to enter without a ticket and matching ID.
. Once the Main Parking Lot is filled, the gates will be closed and the gate will be turned into a pedestrian entrance.
Have your ticket and ID ready.
When you approach the second pedestrian gate at the building, you will once again be asked for your ticket and ID.
Be prepared to have bags checked, including but not limited to purses and Tallit bags.
. If you have a CCF, please notify Wayne Keil in the office.
. We will try and move everyone as quickly as possible, but please try to arrive early.
. Always listen to and respect our security personnel and the local Police who will be on site.
. If You See Something, Say Something!
NOTHING WILL BE DONE TO COMPROMISE THE SECURITY OF THE ENTIRE CONGREGATION TO
SATISFY THE NEEDS OF ANY INDIVIDUAL, SO PLEASE COOPERATE WITH BOTH OUR SECURITY
PERSONNEL AND OUR USHERS.
Ask Dr. Keruv
Q: Dear Dr. Keruv,
My husband and I are moving to Tampa to be
closer to our son. We will be there before the
High Holidays. He is married to a Christian girl
and are raising their children without any formal
religion. My son doesn’t observe Judaism at all,
but we do. We want to continue observing the
Jewish Holidays and want to include our son and
his family even though they do not have a Jewish
home. How do we accomplish this?
Parents Moving to Tampa
A: Dear Parents Moving to Tampa
It is wonderful that you want to live near your
son and be a part of his family. To answer
your question, I think I would start by asking
your son and daughter-in-law if they would
like to come to your house for dinner on Rosh
Hashanah and if it goes well invite them for Yom
Kippur. Explain to them that even though they do
not observe the Jewish Holidays you would like
them to share the holidays with you. Prepare
traditional holiday foods. Maybe your daughterin-law
and grandchildren would like to help you.
It would be a good start in getting closer to your
son’s family by building a positive relationship
with your daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
Good luck and let me know the outcome.
