A Message from Our Rabbi
Ed Farber
” When they learn to love their children more
than they hate us there will be peace.” GOLDA MEIR
Laurie and I will be in Israel to celebrate the Bar
Mitzvah of a grandson when you receive this.
Last year we were there about a month later for
the birth of a granddaughter. It was rather rainy
then and has been the last few weeks in Israel.
In fact Israel is breaking records for rain this
winter and the Sea of the Galilee is higher than
it’s been in a very long time. The Golan Heights
will be greener for longer into the spring and
summer than usual and in spite of the rain Israel
is setting records for tourism. Oh – and one of
her start-up companies has just been recognized
with a special award for figuring out how to
make water out of the air. I can’t even begin to
explain what that is or what it could mean but
think about getting water to places that don’t
have it either for drinking water (but they sure
have plenty of air) or for putting out fires. The
potential is amazing. They have also developed a
new treatment for breast cancer that is ground
breaking and may work on other cancers as
well. I mention all of this because if you listen to
the news you get the feeling that Armageddon
is coming. And it’s coming not only to Israel
but apparently to America as well. If you listen
a lot to the news you might begin to wonder
how any Israeli or American can function. This
past week the news tried to make me fearful of
Iran – what it might do to Americans around the
world and what it might do to Israelis through
her proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas. But life
goes on quite well in Israel and very nicely here
in America. That’s because Israelis know how
strong they are and Americans I hope realize
the power of our country both economically
and militarily. Israel and America are two very
capable countries and we are very blessed to
be part of both of them. Even more important
to remember is that neither country nor its
citizens are complacent. We are prepared. Both
countries have been forced to up their games in
security. Our synagogue is a microcosm of that.
None of us remember security guards 20 years
ago at synagogue and none of us remember
being searched before entering a game at
Dolphin stadium (I know it has a different name
4 BETH TORAH TIMES

now but by the time you get this it could have
another different name so I just call it Dolphin
stadium because – well – that’s what it is!!) But the
reason Israel and America are so strong is because
we live in the real world and we don’t deny or
ignore reality. We know who the good guys are
and who the bad guys are and we understand what
the bad guys want to do. So we prepare extremely
well and limit significantly the damage they could
do without allowing them to stop us in our tracks.
We go forward with our lives and with our work
and with our creativity. It frustrates them greatly
but they live in the past with old hatreds and it is
they who do not have any sense of normalcy in
their lives and it is they who are falling further and
further behind as societies and cultures (look at
the sad condition of Iran and N. Korea and Cuba
and Venezuela and on and on and on.) There is
nothing coming out of their worlds that will benefit
either humanity or even their own citizens. We live
in great times and there are people who hate that
and want to live in the past – and an evil dictatorial
past at that.
Last year when we were in Israel for Rimon’s birth
we ended up spending Purim in the Golan Heights.
In addition to the birth and the amazing greenery
of the Golan and the healthy Sea of Galilee we
were there when the Golan Heights was officially
recognized as a part of Israel. Google didn’t get the
memo because while I was driving to the Golan
and crossed a certain zone it said – ‘Welcome to
Syria’. As you can imagine I was a bit taken aback!
But I was pretty sure I was in Israel so I didn’t
panic. In fact I laughed. Google might be a modern
progressive company – in fact it is – but it too lives
partially in the past when it comes to realities
and justice. It toes a line that still sees Israel as
the problem in the Middle East. Kind of strange
considering how much Israeli inventions
have been critical to Google’s growth. But I
digress. I was talking about Purim. Purim is
an easy holiday to understand. Haman had
an irrational centuries old hatred of Jews and
tried to kill us all. He had some power in that
he could manipulate the King of Persia. But
he met his match in Esther and Mordechai
and we were triumphant. So now we can eat
Hamantachen and hoot and holler every time
that arch-enemy Haman’s name is mentioned.
It’s fun. But it’s more that fun. It’s a reminder
to the Haman’s of the world who still want
to destroy the Jews and America. They are
the past – they are the negative energy in the
world and they are the cause of most of the
suffering in the world. America, Israel and
other good countries are bringing blessing
to the world and to their own citizens. Just
like Esther and Haman we will prevail. The
sooner they understand our determination,
our power and the just nature of our cause
the sooner they can live lives similar to the
ones lived by the citizens of the free and
democratic world. And they know it. How do I
know that they know it? Because while calling
publicly for boycotts of Israel they still daily
use Israeli invented products and medicines
to enhance their lives and when the child of a
Hamas member in Gaza needs a complicated
surgery they secretly find their way to an
Israeli hospital to save their child’s life.
Ultimately they too are parents. But as Golda
Meir so perceptively said – “When they learn
to love their children more than they hate us
there will be peace.” She was right!
BATYA FONDA & JEWISH
FOLK SONGS: A HIDDEN
TREASURE ON THE CYBERSPACE
A Message from Our Cantor
Gastón Bogomolni
When I arrived to the United States in May of
2002, I was exposed to a variety of books that I
have never seen in my life. These books were all
in English, mostly on Jewish Music, the history
of liturgy and the history of Jewish Music. I was
fascinated by the amount of volumes written
about this subject, so dear to my heart. I had
to read them all in order for me to pass a
rigorous 10 hours test to become a member of
the largest union of cantors in the world, the
Cantors Assembly (AKA the CA). What I never
suspected is that these specific books would
influence me to the point to pursue an academic
career in World Music (Ethnomusicology), with a
specialization in Jewish Music which I completed
with a MA degree at the University of Sheffield, UK.
Since then I have been collecting Jewish Music
books, CDs, digital recordings, websites.
I co-edited and co-compiled the first Anthology
of Shabbat melodies from South America,
participated as a presenter at international
symposiums and conferences, I produced a
weekly radio segment on the Jewish radio show
“Chagiga” from Boston, I have given lectures
around the world and visited many synagogues
as a scholar in residence. However, what I enjoy
the most is to find new gems on the internet.
Back on Shavuot of 2010 while preparing for my
class for the Tikkun (the night of study during
this Festival) I encountered the amazing and
thorough website of Batya Fonda & Jewish
Folksongs. I thought I knew a lot about Jewish
world music and Jewish Folksongs, but Batya
added so much knowledge to my repertoire and
my collection. For that I am so grateful to her.
“ It is my pleasure to introduce to you to the website of a dear colleague, Batya
Fonda, who has put together a marvelous section about Purim Jewish Folksongs
on it. Enjoy, learn, sing, share and Chag Purim Sameach!”
THE POWER
OF A SMILE
A Message from Our Chief Operating Officer
Wayne Keil
What’s with a smile? What does it mean? Why
do we do it? How is it so contagious? We long for
a smile, don’t we? The first thing we get excited
about as parents is when our child smiles for the
first time. It’s always the first sign of happiness.
When we get that first smile we always ask our
spouse, “Are you sure it was a smile?” And then you
know what happens? To decide if it was a smile, we
do something to elicit the same reaction. We smile
at our child.
The smile is a simple, yet very powerful tool. In
fact, the smile is even spoken of in Pirkei Avot.
Shammai says, “Make your Torah study regular; say
little and do much; and greet every person with a
smile.” Ethics of the Fathers, 1:15
The great 20th century Rabbi Avraham Karelitz, also
known as the Chazon Ish, explained why: our inner
feelings affect only us, but the countenance we
show to the world affects the mood and happiness
of those around us too. Rabbi Yisroel Salanter
said that our faces – and our expressions – are
like public property; they give us the power to
help or harm everyone we meet. This means that
we have the obligation to smile, even though we
may feel pained on the inside. We live in a world
of others and the very expression of our face can
affect the mood of another human being. Happiness
is contagious. You have an obligation to make others
feel happy; and certainly not to make them feel sad.
My job isn’t always easy and can be awfully hard at
times. Sometimes, I am ashamed to admit, it can
be hard to smile. Thankfully for me and the other
professionals on staff, we are in a building filled with
smiling kids, and we can just walk out our door and
into a hallway and we can get smiles. One of the
best parts of my day is when I have a meeting with
a member who needs help. Being able to help that
person and have them leave with a smile, well, it
makes it all worth it.
Life is short. Bad things happen. They happen when
we least expect it and there is nothing we can do
about it sometimes. But we can still smile. In fact,
it would seem the sages are telling us it is our
obligation to smile. Therefore, let’s all smile a little bit
more and make those around us smile.
I wish all of you a wonderful New
Year filled with lots of smiles!
Wayne Keil

THIS IS US…
OUR BETH TORAH IS
IN YOUR HANDS
A Message from Our President
Rich Berger
As we look at the story of the Exodus from Egypt
and the Jewish people wandering in the desert, we
see how people can come together with a set of
laws and form a nation. The Torah is our guide and
as a congregation we use lessons from Exodus to
form a stronger community.
During the first part of this new decade of the 20’s
– where both the century and the year align – we
can be proud of the participation of congregants
in the constant growth of our Beth Torah. My
goal, as the President of the Board, is to find
ways to make BTBRC relevant to all our members.
Moses taught us to strive to make the best of
your situation and to constantly be open to new
learnings. Our Board is focused on “Relational
Judaism” – being a welcoming community. We are
blessed to have the most wonderful, hard-working
professional leaders and staff. Our clergy – Rabbi
Rojzman, Rabbi Farber and Cantor Bogomolni – are
the BEST, they ARE our Beth Torah!
So, let’s take a moment to look at our journey’s
“wanderings” and see who we are and what we
need to embrace the opportunities of the upcoming
decade.
THIS IS US:
• We are PROUD of Beth Torah’s accomplishments
and place in the community. Our 80- year history
will be celebrated in the upcoming year.
• We are a vibrant, multicultural, inclusive, growing,
egalitarian congregation of approximately 700
member families which means that over 2,200
individuals are impacted by their membership at
Beth Torah!
• We develop meaningful relationships and
experiences by committing to our core values
of spirituality, education, community, Israel and
repairing the world.
• We have inspirational prayer services – Friday
night’s Shabbat B’Yachad service is a spiritual
8 BETH TORAH TIMES

experience through the inclusion of music each
week. Shabbat morning, we not only pray, but we
find that we all learn something from our Rabbis
as they help us to grow. Every morning we have
Minyan which enables us to start our morning with
personal and communal prayers to G-d and provide
a community for those with Yahrzeit to help them
remember loved ones who have passed away.
• We plan for the future through outreach to our
ECA, Religious School and Youth/Camp families;
by looking at new community programs; through
performing mitzvot for those in our community
(Jewish and non-Jewish) who need help; and
by partnering with other Jewish agencies to
strengthen the entire Jewish community in South
Florida.
• We invest in our diverse congregation. Our
upcoming project to redesign the Scheck Family
Sanctuary to be more flexible, with multiple size
configurations, will allow us to have more Services
and events in the Sanctuary.
• We have a focus on our youth while at the same
time expanding programs for parents, emptynesters
and seniors…all are needed to keep Beth
Torah vibrant and relevant.
• We are here when you need us for B’nai Mitzvah,
funerals, Shiva, baby namings, hospital visits and
other life cycle events.
• We are a safe and secure place to attend. We
have expanded our security personnel and added
additional hours of coverage. Providing your ID
protects you and your family.
• PLUS, we are FUN!
THIS IS YOU:
• You care about being Jewish and a member of this
wonderful Conservative congregation.
• You bring your own history, background, skills and
your own level of commitment.
• You have many choices on how to spend your time.
• You count on us when you need us.
THIS IS HOW WE GROW:
• Together we need to ensure that Beth Torah meets
YOUR needs.
• We hope you can find time in your busy life to
attend programs or events.
• We create more opportunities for members to
become friends…this means that we hope each
service or activity allows you to meet other people
you would not have otherwise met.
• We incorporate your ideas on ways to have more
involvement. These are important to us, so we can
leverage them to create new areas of engagement.
• We need volunteers to commit time (you choose
the amount) to help on committees or at events.
Our congregation, Religious School, Youth Groups,
Early Childhood Academy, Sisterhood and Men’s
Club all need people like you to help out.
Please take a moment to write to me at
rberger@btbrc.org with your thoughts on how we can
improve Beth Torah and make this congregation more
meaningful to you and to your family.
This all takes time, effort, energy and commitment.
We need to have your support! Our growth is directly
related to your participation.
Just as the people of Israel wandered and were able
to form a strong community, so too can our Beth
Torah benefit from your skills and ideas as we go from
strength to strength together.
TOGETHER we are One; One BETH TORAH,
One Family – THIS IS US!!!
It is an honor and privilege to be the President of our
Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus community. Thank you
for this opportunity.
A Message from Our Director of Early
Childhood Education Sandra Kopp, M.S.
The first half of the school year is upon us and our ECA came together as one—parents, extended
families, teachers, our clergy, and every member of the Beth Torah leadership team. We were
illuminated by the joy of our children as they presented their Chanukkah show: “Or Ba’Neshamah.”
I am proud of our Early Childhood for being the gateway to a diverse and warm community, one
that nurtures the building of relationships while shaping future generations. During these first few
months of leading the ECA program, not only do I see growth and rebirth, but I am also energized
by the love, drive, and commitment of my staff and this community. Together, we have continued
to create a sacred space for all families, fostering a school environment that invites engagement,
exploration and that, at its core, is a place that builds kehillah; indeed, that is the neshamah of our
school.
Our work with the JRS (Jewish Resource Specialist) grant continues to propel us to seamlessly
integrate school and Synagogue life. To that end, last month we had a meaningful Family Shabbat
Experience. In order to build this program, we created a group that included our Clergy (Rabbi
Rojzman and Cantor), the school’s music teacher, our Cantorial Soloist, the Judaics and Hebrew
specialist and the JRS liaison, Marisa Halle, one of our ECA teachers. Our goal was to incorporate
what we do with the children on Friday mornings at school and enriching it with a family
component: the blessing of the children.
Moreover, we are mindfully instilling in our families the value of giving tzedakah as part of our daily
practices in partnership with Claudine Ackerman, Beth Torah’s JNF liaison and one of our teachers
to help an indoor playground in Sderot. The classrooms, hallways and the sounds of happy children
thriving in our school tell the story of the learning that is taking place, embedded in the Jewish
values by which we live.
The end of a cycle is the beginning of another exciting journey,
and as we prepare to bid farewell to 2019, I look forward to
continuing to lead our ECA into the next decade!
A Message from Our Lifelong Learning
Director Dr. Gabriela Rascovsky
Dear Families,
Shalom
Welcome back!
20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual
acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured
at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision,
you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally
be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision,
it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see
what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.
On the other hand, having 20/20 vision does not
necessarily mean you have perfect vision. 20/20
vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of
vision at a distance. Other important vision skills,
including peripheral awareness or side vision, eye
coordination, depth perception, focusing ability and
color vision, contribute to your overall visual ability.
Fortunately, Jews have several opportunities during
the given calendars (Jewish and secular) to practice
and exercise visual clarity and sharpness. Back in
August, we resumed our community life at the Beth
Torah family with refreshed visions from the last year,
committing to new envisioning for the present cycle.
Insanely, now half of the year is gone and the secular
calendar allows us to reflect and adapt or sharpen
those visions to the real scenario.
During the first half of the year, we opened new
experiential opportunities to our members, allowing
them to fulfill their own visions. Spiritually, the
High Holy Days provided superb moments to
reach higher spiritual spheres. Communally,
lots of programs were offered allowing different
segments of our members to connect with new
friends or simply meet with old friends. Many of
the programs provide high levels of intellectual
engagement that allow people to achieve new
learning experiences. As we ended the first half of
the year, we can proudly say that we had clarity of
vision that with your great support as members and
the invaluable actions of our lay leaders came to
reality.
But the cycle is not over yet, as we start the 2020
secular calendar we have the opportunity to revisit
our visions individually and collectively. As we
continue exercising sharpening our visions and
envisioning skills, we have a better opportunity
to make them happen. Visualizing the next steps
clearly helps us plan ahead proactively and
strategically. It is my hope that we take advantage
on personal and communal levels to use these
skills as both a life planning tool and a bring it to
reality tool to envision together. Undoubtedly, we
will accomplish a better level of visual acuity as a
community.
P.S
A Message from Our Director of Engagement
& Programing Dr. Andrea Beck
FROM PROGRAMING
FOR YOU
TO PROGRAMING
WITH YOU
The first half of our 2019-2020 year has been an
exciting one for engagement and programming
at Beth Torah. To give you a small sample… At
November’s members-only Home Hop Dinner, three
groups of guests simultaneously rotated through the
homes of Rabbi Rojzman, Rabbi Farber, and Cantor
Bogomolni, enjoying a different course of their
meal at each stop while engaging in small-group
conversations with our clergy and their spouses
as well as members of our Board of Directors and
Professional leadership teams. The following week,
Professional Networking took place at our Cocktails
& Conversation event at Soff’s Bar at JW Marriott
Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa in Aventura. Open
to the community, we enjoyed welcoming a diverse
group of guests to this new style of programming and
we look forward to coordinating the same event in
February.
Looking forward, there are too many programs
to list in their entirety here, but we are especially
excited about the following… our two Family Fun Day
mornings, 9:00 am – 11:00 am, are coming up on
January 20, 2020 and February 17, 2020. A healthy
Asian-style cooking class is being ‘dished up’ February
10, 2020. Mama Lushon, an evening celebrating
Yiddish theatre and music, and the contributions
of Rabbi Rojzman’s parents, Henri Gerro & Rosita
Londner, will take place March 16, 2020.
Beyond what Beth Torah offers independently,
Greater Miami Jewish Federation has generously
awarded three grants to us that will each
positively impact our community:
• By receiving Greater Miami Jewish Federation
& CAJE Teen Market’s Miami ARC Teen
Initiative Grant, we are able to offer ‘Shalom
Self: A 360 Teen Wellness Experience’ to
South Florida teens, starting January 25, 2020.
• Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s Women’s
Impact Initiative Grant gave us a platform for
dreaming up and organizing ‘Gesher L’nashim’,
Bridge to Women, a nine-month series of
diverse, intergenerational programming
designed to build bridges between, of, and for
women.
• As a recipient of Greater Miami Jewish
Federation’s Jewish Incubator Grant, we look
forward to seeing our 2nd annual Special
Mitzvah Seder grow as a Passover program
open to adults with physical or developmental
challenges on April 13, 2020.
In all of these past, present, and future successes,
the most important component is YOU! Please
accept this as a personal and eager invitation:
reach out to me about programming you would
like to see and/or ways you may wish to get
involved. It is your inspired ideas that lay the
groundwork for programming and it is your
presence that creates engagement. Together,
let us strive to move from programing for you to
programing with you.
Enthusiastically,
News from the
Scheck Family Religious School
Dear Families,
Shalom,
We hope the break brought you renewal, relaxation
and fun! Welcome back!
We can proudly share that our first semester in
Religious School was filled with new learning experiences
to all families, students and teachers as one.
In reflecting retroactively, we can recall, memories
from baking round Challah for Rosh Hashanah, sharing
the Shabbat table in shul and at homes, learning
about Sukkot on a Saturday morning with a breakfast
in the Sukkah, re-illuminating our lives for Chanukah
with our “Candles and Comedy” event, visiting the
Holocaust Museum, and the list could go on and on.
All of it happened, in addition to the weekly learning
experiences in the classrooms.
During the first half of the year we initiated our annual
collective Mitzvah projects that instill Jewish values
in our children while benefiting organizations such as
the Kosher Food Bank, or the Connections Israel for
the IDF soldiers. We are definitely thankful to all and
each one of you as parents, students, teachers, and
lay leaders for your continuing support in partnering
with us in your children Jewish education.
We have exciting plans for the second semester to
continue strengthening the Jewish identity of the
young generation for the next decade. More Shabbat
dinners to come, embarking in a Religious school JNF
campaign to towards Tu’ Bishvat, celebrating a Yom Israel,
fulfilling the Purim mitzvot while supporting the
local and Israel community, and later on preparing for
Passover with more educational and family engagement
opportunities to all.
It is our wish that in our journey for the second semester
we will continue walking hand in hand together
as one, to assure the continuity of our legacy in the
new decade that just begins!
As Kodak moments speak more that lots of words,
take the chance to see those “Kodak Moments” from
the first half of the year here http://www.btbrc.org/
Message from our Sisterhood
As we enter the new secular year of 2020,
Sisterhood has to look back at two programs
that we had in November with our Paid up
Membership Brunch and our pre-Chanukah/
Shabbat dinner, which was graciously hosted by
Rabbi and Gisela Rojzman and family.
As you can see from the pictures, we had fun
at our Paid up Membership Brunch, where
there was a skit titled, Moses and the Mosettes.
Our members had a chance to socialize, meet
our newest members and to find out about
our various programs that will be taking place
throughout the year.
We have collected half of our goal for Torah Fund
and bills have been sent out to those who received
their pins during the High Holy Days, but need to
send in their donations.
On January 17 and 18th, we will be celebrating
Sisterhood Shabbat. This is a special Shabbat,
which is traditionally celebrated with other
Sisterhoods around the country during the
same weekend. We will be having our Kabbalat
Shabbat service at 6pm, followed by a Shabbat
Dinner. You are able to make reservations
through: BTBRC.shulcloud.com where you will
be able to find the information for paying for the
dinner. Reservations must be made by January
13th. Also, if you are a Sisterhood member and
would like to participate in the service on Friday
or Shabbat morning, please contact Judy Berger
at: judy.berger@comcast.net.
Looking ahead to February, Sisterhood will be
having it’s annual Game Day on February 16th.
Keep your eyes open for the flyer. You don’t want
to this this day of fun!
Happy New Year!
Ask Dr. Keruv
Q: Dear Dr. Keruv,
My son is going to be a Bar Mitzvah next year. My sister-in-law is not Jewish. I want her to
feel welcome and participate in the service. Can you give me some suggestions as to what is
appropriate for a relative who is not Jewish to be a part of the Bar Mitzvah service?
Judy from Plantation
A: Dear Judy from Plantation
Congratulations on your son becoming a Bar Mitzvah.
It is wonderful that you want your sister-in-law to feel welcome and be a part of the Bar Mitzvah
service. You could give her a speaking part in English (the prayer for our country), or call her
to the bima to open the ark. She can be called with other relatives if you think she would feel
uncomfortable being called alone. It would be a good idea if you ask her what she prefers so
she can be prepared. Again, congratulations on the upcoming simcha.
