California Pistachio Salt Tolerance Update by: Blake Sanden, Louise Ferguson and Beau Antongiovanni The classic concept of crop salt tolerance is over simplified. Focusing only on rootzone salinity this calculation consists of a single soil saturation extract salinity threshold (ECe) with a “% relative yield” decline function (Figure 1). Research This approach minimizes the real world variability in actual tree growth and yield due to additional specific ion toxicities, nutritional problems often associated with high pH soils and soil textural problems causing water logging/anoxia and possible disease. The current salinity tolerance function for California pistachios is essentially the same as cotton. It was developed from a small plot study during the eight to 13th leaf years in a commercial orchard in northwestern Kern County from 1997-2002 to give a final threshold of 9.4 dS/m ECe and an 8.4 perent relative yield decline above that level. These values were confirmed for seedling growth in saline sand-tank studies at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Salinity Lab in Riverside, California. Figure 1.
