“Serve and Volley”
One of the big things that came out of this 2019 US Open Tennis Championship,
was the beauty and the destructive power of the Serve and Volley game.
Spectators and players alike were “wowed“ by how Taylor Townsend was able
to dismantle Simona Halep playing the Serve snd Volley game.
Player after player in the US Open were incorporating the Serve and Volley
style into their baseline game, and were being rewarded handsomely.
For many people, it was the first time they’d seen the Serve and Volley game
in action, and they loved it. Let’s hope that this inspire others to know that it’s
possible to learn and play the Serve and Volley game.
big names doesn’t mean big game
Aces and
6 Serveitup August 2019
Big Names, Disappointment
Many players and parents have
been duped, into running to the
big name coaches and tennis
academies, thinking that they
are going to get the best quality
coaching, and their child will
become a world class player in
no time.
But many of them have been
sadly disappointed. That is because
there are only a handful of
coaches who actually know how
to teach and develop players to
a world class level, from scratch.
These coaches have an eye to
quickly recognize and correct
flawed techniques in players.
These are not big name coaches,
and are hard to find, because
they work in the trenches, developing
the talent, that all the
big name academies and coaches
chase after to work with, as if
they’re the ones who developed
the player.
It’s been quite a while since the
big names developed any world
class player. Go figure.

How’s
your game?
How’s your game? Are you frustrated with
it? Is it enjoyable, or no fun at all. So what’s
wrong with your game? In order to move
forward, to become a better player, this
question needs to to answered honestly.
When you do it will be the begining of
you becoming a better player.

This is how you
step
UP
To unleash all your power on a ball in the
court, don’t step forward into the shot
and swing, this is how you do it. You move
forward, step up your back foot forward
past your front foot, load your core, and
watch how your core will explode your
racket through the shot.
to become a better
Tennis Player
you’ve got to become
An Athlete
An athlete is a person who is skilled and
proficient in competetive track and field
events.
That discipline embodies a ton of footwork
and the explosiveness that accompanies
such activitity.
Athletes are therefore quick, fast, flexible,
responsive, nimble, agile, durable,
focused, and mentally and physically
strong.
These are the qualities you want to add
to your strokes, to become a world class
tennis player.

finish
your strokes
Because junior tennis players know
that they have poor footwork, they
pull their rackethead off their strokes
quickly to make up for this. It would
be better for them to stay longer with
the strokes and finish them. You will
have more control, placement, spin
and power. So finish those strokes.

play a point
one stroke
at a time
That’s why it’s important to finish
your strokes: so when you’re
playing a point, play one proper
stroke at a time, until the point
is over. Sometimes players play
“the point“. Don’t. Always play
one stroke at at time.

From United Kingdom with love
SOPHIE HOBSON

My name is Sophie Hobson. I am 15 years
old and I am a junior tennis player from the
United Kingdom. I live in Leeds, England and
I am in year 10 at high school.
I have been playing tennis since I was 3 years
old. My parents bought me a plastic tennis
set for the garden and I really enjoyed hitting
the ball. My parents noticed that I had really
good hand eye coordination. We would go
to the local park to play.
The local leisure centre, JCCS near us had a
large indoor tennis centre. We went down to
have a look and there was a mini red session
going on. I had a go! I really enjoyed it. So
my parents enrolled me on to the mini red
programme. I have trained there ever since!
I started having private lessons as well as my
group sessions and my game really started
to improve.

I was runner up in the 10u doubles event
at the Yorkshire County Championships. In
2016, I took part in the 12u Leeds Tennis
League. This was a mixed team event playing
both singles and doubles matches with
other clubs in and around the Leeds area.
We played against some great competitors.
We won the league! We were really pleased
as was our coach. The following year, I played
in the 14u team and we managed to get to
the semi final, losing out to Chapel Allerton
Tennis Club. Last year was the first time
I played in the LTA Team Tennis event with
my teamate Kyla.
We played against some really strong girls
from around the region and we came top of
division 2 league. I was really pleased with
my performance. This year we will be playing
in the 16u Team Tennis event. I am really
looking forward to it. I hope we can be successful
again!

I continue to train and play hard and have
been lucky enough to attend the Barcelona
Tennis Academy 3 times in the last year.
This has enabled me to improve my game,
fitness level and technique.
The coaches are very supportive and push
us to become better players.I recently completed
the Tennis Leaders Course and since
September I have supported the coaches
with their mini red and orange sessions. Plus
I have helped at tournaments and events at
my club.
I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and
experience with the younger children and I
hope to start the level 1 coaching assistant
course when I am 16.
This year I am going to focus on working
and improving my rating/ranking by playing
more tournaments. In the future, I would
like to have a career in the sports sector and
hopefully become a tennis coach.

e sure your opponents
Remember
You
Whether you win or you lose, make sure that
your opponents always remember you, and for
the right reasons. Let them have to talk to their
friends and family about you.
If they are doing that, it means that your game
spoke volumes on the court, and left a lasting
impression, that gained you respect. They may
even want to exchange numbers so you guys
can hook up again.
If they’re not doing that, they may remember
you, but it won’t be in a positive manner.

NEVERstop
improving
Junior tennis players get to a point
where they think they “know everything“
and they don’t have to listen
anymore. That’s the worse thing you
can do. Even the pros at the top of
the game, are constantly in a state
of learning. Whenever you think you
know it all, your game will begin to
deteriorate.
