We’ll reject Fayemi’s proposal on Minimum Wage
Labour Congress, NLC,
if… —Ekiti Labour
and Public Service Joint
By Rotimi
Ojomoyela
A DO-EKITI—
LABOUR leaders in
Ekiti State, yesterday,
threatened to reject
Governor Kayode Fayemi’s
plan to implement the
N30,000 minimum wage
for workers if it contravened
the template set by the
national leadership of the
labour unions.
The labour leaders, who
expressed appreciation to
the Governor for deeming
it fit to implement the
proposal, however, frowned
at the unilateral decision
taken on the matter, saying
that labour could have
been carried along as
earlier agreed on
September 30 at a meeting
with the Head of Service,
Mr. Ayodeji Ajayi.
They insisted that
whatever Fayemi will
implement must comply
with the National template
increment of 66.6 per cent
for Grade Levels 01-06, 29
per cent for GL 07-14 and
24 percent for 15-17.
Fayemi had last Friday
pronounced the readiness
of his administration to
effect the new minimum
wage commencing from
October during the 2019
edition of the Teachers’ Day
Celebration.
The labour position was
contained in a statement
jointly signed by the
secretaries of Trade Union
IHUNBO CUSTOMS KILLING: Ogun
govt to prosecute perpetrators
*As NCS absolves self from killing
By James
Ogunnaike
A GOVERNOR BEOKUTA—
Dapo
Abiodun of Ogun State,
yesterday, vowed to
investigate the
circumstances of the death
of three students allegedly
killed by the vehicle of the
Nigeria Customs Service,
NCS.
The governor, in a
statement by his Chief
Press Secretary, Kunle
Somorin, warned security
men, chasing suspected
smugglers or hoodlums to
be wary of the rights of
citizens in all
circumstances.
The students had just
closed from school, when
they were reportedly hit by
a vehicle being driven by
an official of NCS, who
were in hot chase of
suspected smugglers.
While the three students
were reportedly killed,
other students and market
women were also said to
have sustained varying
degrees of injuries, as the
Customs officials chased
suspected smugglers.
The statement reads: “We
respect the sanctity of
human lives in Ogun State
and government exists to
provide security and
welfare for the people. No
matter the circumstances,
we found this
condemnable. We would
not fold our arms and watch
our future leaders killed in
that manner.”
The statement added that
the governor was shocked
at the sad news of the death
of the three students of
Ojumo Community High
School, Ihunbo in Ipokia
Local Government Area of
the State,.
The Governor said it was
reprehensible that young
children with promising
futures could be killed in
such a manner.
He, however, advised
security personnel,
especially NCS officials, to
apply moderate
engagements with
suspected smugglers or
hoodlums along the border
towns to avoid such loss of
lives and property in the
future.
NCS absolves self
from killing
Meanwhile, the Area 1
State Command of the NCS
said the Ihunbo incident
was caused by an accident
and not a case of stray
bullets or pursue as
insinuated in some
quarters
The Command, however,
denied that only one
person died in the said
accident
In a statement by the
Public Relations Officer of
Nigeria Customs Area 1,
Abdullahi Maiwada, he
said: “At about 1330 Officers
of Nigeria Customs Service
Ogun Command on
routine patrol arrested a
vehicle (Mercedes Benz
Adeyemi Obalanlege and
the Association of Nigerian
Journalists and Writers of
Tourism, AJET, yesterday,
tasked government at all
levels in the country to focus
more on tourism to achieve
accelerated development of
the country as the oil wealth
is fast dwindling.
The call was made by
all, organised by ANJET.
In his remarks, Oba
Obalanlege urged the
government and Nigerians
to explore tourism potential
for job creation.
Obalanlege said: “With
the huge tourism potentials
we are blessed with in the
country, we should not be
Bashman, Akinyemi Taiwo
and Gbenga Olowoyo
respectively.
The statement reads: “In
line with the national
directive of the leadership
of the organised labour,
anything short of the above
percentage, the organised
labour won’t do anything
contrary to the Wednesday,
October 16, 2019 set for the
national strike in Nigeria
over the insincerity of
government to pay the new
minimum wage to workers
on GL 01-17.
“The organised labour is
constrained to refer to a
meeting of September 30 at
the office of the Head of
Service, the resolution then
was that the state
government must ensure
due process with the setting
up of negotiating team and
in fulfillment of
outstanding salaries and
other emoluments before
commencing N30, 000
minimum wage, although,
the pronouncement made
“Nigerians need not look
up to the government for
job creation, the
government is only meant
to create an enabling
environment for businesses
to thrive.
“The second tallest story
building in Nigeria is in Otta, it
should be better developed to
attract international tourists; a lot
more monumental buildings
across communities can also be
converted to tourist sites.”
Earlier, Managing Director,
Sabre Network, West Africa, Dr.
Gbenga Olowo, urged the
government to take the tourism
industry seriously by earmarking
sufficient budgetary allocation for
the sector.
Olowo, who was represented
by Deputy Zonal Director,
Western Zone, Sabre Travel
Network, Mr. Mayowa Badewa,
said that the tourism industry
must be prioritised as huge
employment opportunities could
be derived from the sector.
By Shina
the Vice President,
Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo,
yesterday, charged women
in the country to champion
the fight against drug
abuse among the youths.
She said the
consequences of the
menace affect women first
as mothers, hence, the
need to teleguide their
children to shun the vices
and focus their energy on
building a virile nation.
The labour leaders also
expressed hope that
Governor Fayemi will
being outstanding workers’
salaries, allowances and
pension before clocking
one year in office on October
“The liquidation of these
outstanding payments are
sacrosanct. They include
three months payment to
public servants, September
2017 and May 2018
deductions, six months
arrears of salaries to local
Women’s Conference with
the theme: Woman:
Pioneer of Change for
Inclusive Participation in
Development, in Osogbo,
Mrs. Osinbajo said the
development of women is
essential to the national
development.
She said: “Women must
take the lead in the war
against drug abuse among
the children, the
consequences hurt
mothers more than the
nation, we must strive to
tackle the menace
headlong.
“We must realise that a
nation cannot develop if
women are not adequately
taken care of, however, we
must also strive to develop
ourselves and prepare
ourselves for the challenges
waiting ahead.
“It is time for women to
acquire knowledge that
can move us to the next
level, we should be bosses
in our own right, and all
that is important is to
acquire the right
knowledge.
“I am sure all of you here
have a lot of potentials, all
that is needed is exposing
the talents to become a
source of revenue
generation. Those ideas in
your minds can become a
reality if you believe and
avoid negative energy
around you.”
The Chairperson of
OSUNWA and wife of the
state Governor, Kafayat
Oyetola, said the
association is aimed at
strengthening unity of the
people and foster regional
developmental agenda to
benefit the masses.
