Readers respond to an
article about the white
supremacist posters
found at the Canterbury
University campus
Meren Iscariot – This is
what happens with unlimited
free speech, we tolerate those who
preach hate and division and this
is what happens when those ideas
have room to grow.
Julian Visch – Nutters
whom still live in their parents
basement.
Jo Kenji Tanouye – I’m
glad Canterbury University has
no place for racism and hate.
Wish the same could be said for
Auckland University.
Ben O’Connor – Free
speech?
Jo Hosking – At least we
know who to avoid and who the
police can keep an eye on.
Some people seem incapable
of changing their beliefs, so in
some ways, it’s better that they
are open about it, rather than
forced underground and fuelled
by others hate towards them to
inflict their own hate crimes.
Sometimes it’s better the devil
you know, than the devil you
don’t.
Emma MacDonald – Just
rip them down if you see them.
Or make awesome and witty
counter posters?
Conservative
Consideration NZ – Totally
unaffected. But I’m sure these
people are thanking the media
for every second in the spotlight
they’re given.
Readers respond to an
article about the home
detention sentence given
to a man who sexually
assaulted two women in
a cemetery
Katrina Criglington –
People wonder why Christchurch
has got a lot of crime, in my
opinion it is because if you get
caught all you get is a slap with a
wet bus ticket. I feel that if you do
the crime you should get punished.
Home detention is not punishment
for a lot of people.
Instead it is time to sit on the
couch and do sweet nothing all day.
These judges are doing no favours
to the Christchurch community by
handing out such weak sentences.
Jude Brown – That sentence
is a freaking disgrace. I’ve known
people to get the same sentence
for having a couple of tinnies.
Denis Lynn Gillison
– I really don’t know what is
happening to our justice system.
He will do it again and next
time it could be worse. Come on
judges, man-up and give a real
sentence.
Maria Green – And why
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
home detention, it’s not a
deterrent for anyone who wants
to commit these offences against
anyone. What is wrong with our
justice system?
Chris Knight – No justice to
see here. A judicial joke. Judges
are far too lenient.
This guy should be locked up
for five years.
Holly Bryce – These days it
seems like you can get away with
anything. What’s the point in
having ‘laws’, don’t need to have
prisons, courtrooms etc, because
these days you can get away with
anything.
Jilly Jackson – Home
detention. That is a joke and a
slap in the face to his victims.
Readers respond to a
starnews.co.nz article
about a group of irate
rugby fans who say they
will sue Spark Sport for
$250 million over its
issues with live streaming
the Rugby World Cup
Joan Debbie – I always
knew it wouldn’t go well. For
a start there’s not enough fibre
connections in NZ or fast
broadband.
Amelia Anne Carter – I
don’t think it is Spark’s fault, I
think it comes down to the type
of TV customers have. We use
Chromecast from my phone
to our TV and we have had no
problems.
Nic Davies – Not the end of
the world – more money than
sense, only a game.
Graeme Brown – Well most
of us that deal with Spark on a
regular basis knew it was never
going to work.
Rob Harrison – I got told
to do the same and offered
no discount after repeated
breakdowns while watching EPL.
I watched the (All Blacks) game
free to air as I didn’t want the
hassle – $120 down the drain so
far.
Isaac Murray – There is a lot
of misguided recommendations
or accusations going on here. A
few things to bear in mind. If
you are using the app on your
smart TV and you experience
disruptions, try loading a
YouTube video on another device
also on wireless. If that struggles
to buffer, try again on a wired
device, if that fails to buffer
then it’s likely your bandwidth.
If YouTube loads fine on wired
but not wireless, disconnect all
wireless devices (aside from your
OPINION 25
TV) and try moving your router
closer to your TV. If you are
using a range extender you are
creating an additional wireless
hop for an AV signal to travel
through. When streaming live
media it is a broadcast, meaning
any lost data packets are unlikely
to be caught in a back log and will
be lost for good (or will stream
rapidly to catch up to real time
footage). Try eliminating the
range extender, too. If your range
extender is wired to your router
then it shouldn’t be an issue. The
app was first released on Samsung
TVs and later on LGs, Panasonics
etc. It was a beta version app
for an alarmingly long time and
was only made available to late
model TVs, meaning the wi-fi
antennas on those TVs should be
good enough to ensure seamless
live AV streaming. There is a
chance that the TV, albeit late
model, has not got adequate
componentry, in which case you
may try streaming through your
phone to a Chromecast or Apple
TV etc. The fact of the matter
is it was a rushed production
by Spark, which also took little
responsibility for the fact that the
streaming service was dubious
even prior to release. However,
this should not detract from ISP
services (or any other ISP for that
matter). It is not an ISP issue, and
unless you’re on ADSL or 4g in a
congested location, it is unlikely
to be an incoming connection
issue.
Readers respond to
an article on starnews.
co.nz about how central
Christchurch residents
have been slower to
vote in the local body
elections than people in
other parts of the city
Scotty Ogilvie – Trying
to find a postbox is like finding
a hens tooth. Bring on online
voting.
Heather Wilkins – Maybe
some have forgotten there is
mail only three times a week and
forgot to post it early.
Frances S Harrison – No
surprise, there is no interesting
engagement with the public on
their issues.
