LOOKING BACK, LOOKING AHEAD
We hit the ground running in 2018, with renewed strength and clarity of purpose driven by our
expanded mission as the go-to gender equity solution provider for the Food Industry. Our focus is on
accelerating women’s advancement and helping our Partners reap the rewards of a gender-diverse
workplace to drive business growth.
One of the most critical ways we do that is by convening the Food Industry in extensive collaboration
within and across sectors. We have expanded our circle of influence by connecting with new partners
in hospitality, wine and spirits and automated merchandising, as well as support industries such as
banking and finance. At the same time, we continue to nurture our deep ties to our industry’s most
active and visible trade organizations.
We are especially proud of the insights and innovation alliances we bring to the industry that empower
all of us with industry-specific research on women’s progress. The most visible of these is our
ongoing partnership with McKinsey & Company that gives WFF Partners access to the Women in the
Workplace Study for the Food Industry.
All of these connections work together to make us stronger and position us to be among the first
industries to close the gender gap and win the war for talent.
There’s no question, we feel a certain degree of pride in helping to move gender equity to the top of
the agenda throughout the Food Industry. As well, we are humbled by the opportunity to play a unique
role in opening greater opportunities to women and helping our Partner Companies to unlock their
full potential.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We are pleased to share these highlights from the year.
FOUNDED CEO ADVISORY COUNCIL
A particularly significant and rewarding point of progress is the strong participation of senior industry executives in our
new CEO Advisory Council.
The data make it clear that CEO engagement is a critical first step to accelerating women’s advancement. On the heels
of our successful launch at the 2018 Annual Leadership Development Conference of our Lead the Way gender equity
initiative, it was clear Food Industry CEOs and senior leaders got it. They were all in and ready to lead on gender equity.
WFF’s CEO Advisory Council engages some of the most influential senior executives across the industry to provide
critical input, share their public commitment and leverage their influence to accelerate women’s advancement. The
Council serves as a “think tank” to guide our consideration of new products and services to support Partner companies
on their gender equity journeys.
The Council is co-chaired by Sysco Corporation CEO Tom Bené and McLane Foodservice Inc.’s SVP for Sales & Strategic
Relationships and 2018 WFF Board Chair, Susan Adzick. They meet throughout the year to identify the most pressing
issues facing the Food Industry around gender equity and to collaborate with WFF to address them.
LAUNCHED BOLD
STRATEGY
We launched 2018 with an exceptional strategic plan
that included, for the first time, a three-year operating
plan and budget. The 2018-2020 Aspirational Strategy
calls on WFF to act more boldly to expand our impact
on the industry, building on nearly three decades
primarily focused on developing women leaders to
Lead the Way to women’s workplace advancement
and gender equity across the Food Industry.
A critical first step in this process has been deep
engagement of CEOs around gender equity and
gaining their commitment to close the gender gap
in the Food Industry.
GREW WOMEN IN THE
WORKPLACE STUDY
PARTICIPATION
A fundamental resource in our initiative to close
the gender gap is information. Every company
needs to understand where the greatest
barriers exist to women’s progress within their
organization and how their results compare to
peers facing similar challenges.
WFF’s access to the Women in the Workplace
Study for the Food Industry provides robust data
to Partner companies with organization-specific
results about their talent pipeline, advancement
and human resource opportunities with data
segmented by food operators, manufacturers
and distributors.
EXPANDED EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM
To meet the goals of our expanded mission, WFF broadened and deepened its executive leadership team this year with
some of the industry’s most accomplished professionals.
These senior executives support the CEO by providing the talent, focus and bandwidth to support the mission as the
organization prepares to expand membership and develop an innovative virtual learning initiative that reaches food
companies and women leaders across the nation, regardless of where they are.
THE NEW WFF EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM
In 2018, we nearly doubled industry
participation in the Study to 62 companies,
further strengthening insights on our
industry’s progress.
Libby Saylor Wright, Chief
Operating Officer brings
20 years of experience,
most recently serving
in a variety of strategy
and marketing roles with
The Coca-Cola Company.
Krista Gibson, Chief
Marketing Officer brings
25 years of experience
shaping strategy and driving
growth, most recently as
CMO for Chili’s Grill & Bar.
Kathryn Lyons, Chief
Growth Officer brings
20 years in fundraising
and corporate partnership
development, most
INTRODUCED WFF
EXCHANGES
Networking events are now taking place in cities
across the country hosted by Partner companies with
WFF support. WFF Exchanges offer opportunities for
those engaged with the organization to build strategic
connections locally and support the WFF mission in
advancing women leaders in the Food Industry.
Events are planned and executed by local WFF
members and include a variety of networking activities
and speakers. WFF provides support through emails,
promotion via Linked In, event templates and learnings
from prior hosts. Because WFF Exchanges are
member-led, each area and even each event within
an area is unique.
FORGED AND STRENGTHENED STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
WFF is the industry’s “chief convener” around gender
equity, bringing diverse elements together to strengthen
the whole. This includes important relationships across
diverse areas.
HELPED WOMEN BREAK THROUGH AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The 2018 Annual Leadership Development Conference in Dallas brought thousands of Food Industry leaders together
to learn, grow and network.
The Conference stood out as the launching pad where we introduced our bold Lead the Way initiative to drive gender
equity. We recognized the 32 forward-thinking companies that were the first to participate in the Women in the
Workplace Study with the unique Pioneers Award.
Three days of outstanding speakers and deep-dive classes culminated in a history-making closing session with Former
First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, and Emmy-winning journalist, Maria Shriver.
HELPED WOMEN AMPLIFY THEIR IMPACT AT LDWS
Our 2018 Leadership Development Workshops (LDWs) brought one-day, immersive professional development
to more than 1,600+ women in 11 cities across the country. The hands-on experience enabled participants to build
a personalized roadmap to career success with strategies targeted at breaking through mental barriers, building
confidence through competence and cultivating meaningful connections.
ENGAGED INDUSTRY LEADERS AT EXECUTIVE SUMMIT
Industry CEOs and their senior teams invested a day with WFF and their peers to Lead the Way to Gender Equity at
the 2018 Executive Summit. With many of the industry’s most influential senior executives sharing their personal
experience and organization best practices, peer-to-peer learning focused on:
• Creating a Culture of Inclusion
• Building CEO Commitment and Engagement
• Achieving Pay Equity
• Developing Flexible Work Environments
Executive Summit also played host to our first Male
Ally Session where male senior leaders packed the
room to explore how they can most effectively add
to the conversation and drive gender equity in their
organizations.
The candid discussion led to creation of our first Male
Champions Community of Interest which will be offered
during the 2019 Conference. Research shows that
mentorship and sponsorship from senior males can
increase compensation and career progress satisfaction for
women.
IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY
TO SERVE PARTNERS
Building on an external technology assessment
conducted in 2017, we implemented more robust
technologies at WFF including our investment in
and transition to SalesForce as our “source of truth”
for processing and tracking all member activity and
Partner data. With stronger platform support and
improved analytics, we can better serve members and
Partners, gauge the effectiveness of outreach efforts
and track the impact of engagement on member
career progress.
LAUNCHED NEW WEBSITE
In response to member feedback, we relaunched a fresh new website highlighting
features and member benefits used most often and easily accessed from one spot at
log in. The revised site also tells the story of WFF’s expanded mission and pivot to
become the industry’s gender equity thought leader with the research, insights and
best practice solutions to drive business growth.
