Burglars strike pensioner again
82-year-old’s
house hit
three times
• By Matt Slaughter
COLIN IS 82 and lives in
Somerfield.
He doesn’t ask for much but
today all he wants is for the
burglars who keep breaking into
his house to just leave him alone.
His home has been broken into
twice in the past month and three
times since 2014.
Colin was on holiday in
Australia when the two recent
burglaries happened.
His TV, his brother’s motor
scooter and some of his late wife’s
perfume were stolen.
In 2014, the burglar took his
wife’s jewellery.
“It’s a violation of your space,
isn’t it? You don’t like people
rifling through your stuff and it
doesn’t give you a very good security
feeling,” said Colin, who does
not want his surname published.
“I’m putting in an alarm now.
Since I’ve lived here [2006], it’s the
third time I’ve been robbed.”
The second break-in happened
early last month, just after he had
left for Australia.
A neighbour reported it to the
police.
Focus on
well-being
in city’s south
• By Matt Slaughter
A NEW PLAN is being
developed to look after elderly
residents in south Christchurch.
A committee has been
working on the Age-Friendly
Spreydon-Cashmere Action
Plan for more
than a year.
Member Helene
Mautner said the
plan will go to
the Spreydon-
Cashmere
Community
Helene
Mautner
Board for sign-off
once it is finished.
“We want to
make sure that older residents
are connected and that they
feel safe and they have healthy
homes because a lot of them
are very isolated. We wanted to
reach out to people and look into
things that would have a very
direct and immediate impact on
people’s lives,” said Dr Maunter.
If approved, the plan
will focus on improving
News
Plan to take care of elderly
In Brief
HELP: The Age-Friendly Spreydon-Cashmere Action Plan is
being developed to take care of elderly residents in the area.
outdoor spaces, buildings,
transportation, housing, social
participation, civic participation,
employment, respect and social
inclusion, communication,
information and health services.
Dr Mautner said the plan will
be an age-friendly initiative
aimed at promoting the wellbeing
of older people throughout
Spreydon and Cashmere wards.
She said the area has one
of the highest populations of
elderly residents in the city and
the plan will aim to cater for this
group.
“It was because the
demographics when you look
at them for the city, we have
one of the oldest
populations in
the city, but it’s
also I think the
fact that it’s the
right thing to do.”
Dr Mautner
said the
World Health
Organisation
guidelines for
Peter
Tuffley
ageing cities have influenced the
plan.
Committee members have
addressed the community board
with the final introductory
paper for the plan.
Dr Mautner said discussions
about the plan will continue
with the newly-elected
board. She hopes it will be
finished and made official as
soon as possible.
Committee member Peter
Tuffley hopes the plan will
“promote changes that would
make life easier for the elderly in
Spreydon-Cashmere.”
PARK REPAIRS
Work is under way to upgrade
Woolston Park. The city
council is improving the
drainage network which
services the park and some
surrounding properties.
Contractors will also renew the
sports field irrigation, cricket
wicket block and re-level the
playing surface. Significant
drainage issues have previoulsy
affected the ability to use
park’s playing surface over
winter. The work is expected to
be finished by April.
LEAKING WATER PIPES
The city council is working
to repair leaking water pipes
in Spreydon and Cashmere
after a spike in the number of
leaks reported. The Spreydon-
Cashmere Community Board
has previously raised the leaks
as a concern.
BIKETOBER HALLOWEEN
The final Biketober event
will be a Halloween ride
through the Beckenham
Loop on October 31. As part
of the month-long cycling
celebration, a number of
cycling events are happening
throughout Christchurch. To
Calls for more investment in
An Addington community
leader says the area is not
getting enough attention
from the city council
compared to the central
city. Matt Slaughter took to
the streets to find out what
others think
MANUKA COTTAGE manager
Cherylan Davies thinks the city
council should be investing more
in Addington and paying greater
attention to what residents want.
Mrs Davies and other residents
she has spoken to are concerned
with “the
amount of
money that’s
being spent
in the central
city.”
She said it is
“understandable
to a point”
Cherylan
Davies
– but it is
coming “at the
cost of the little
suburbs.”
“There’s nothing for youth in
Addington. There’s no basketball
court, there’s no skateboard
park, and because we are in such
close proximity to the central
city, council would say, well,
you could walk to Washington
Way skate park. There’s not a
lot of things for youth and for
children to do and this is just
parents and kids saying it when
you’re talking to them,” said Mrs
Davies.
On the streets of Addington,
business owners and residents
approached by Southern View
were split on whether the area
needs more investment.
Said Lincoln Rd’s Pramukh
Convenience Store manager
Bipin Parmar: “Most of the
Mr Parmar said the area
needs the city council to invest
and “make it
it also needs some “kids fun
nothing much to do for kids.”
The Miller Bar & Cafe owner
Michelle Cattell said the suburb
has been neglected.
“I think they [city council] are
just too busy focusing on the
central city.”
She said the city council’s plan
to build new bus lanes, which
will operate at peak times on
Lincoln Rd and reduce the speed
limit to 30km/h for a 900m
stretch, will do more harm than
good.
“The 30km/h zone and the bus
lanes – that’s going to ruin the
dairies.
“This redevelopment is not
going to benefit Addington.
They’re looking at Addington
but they’re doing it for the wrong
reasons,” she said.
Ms Cattell feels there is a
“double standard” when it comes
to the regulations imposed on
Addington bars, compared to
those in the central city.
“We went into town and some
of the people trying to get in
could hardly walk.
“It’s like there’s a double
standard from the outer bars
compared to the inner-city
bars.”
However, Addington
resident Matt Kamstra is
pleased the council’s priority is
the central city and says enough
attention is being given to
Addington.
“Post-earthquake,
Village residents got behind their
Lady Wigram’s Got Talent was
About 15 people performed
as part of the evening, which
included a group of residents
who acted out rugby moves
to the Crusaders theme song
Conquest of Paradise.
Mrs Tucker said the
performance had “hilarious”
of “magnificent” kicks which
sent the ball straight into their
theatre production manager
Judith McCleary’s hands in the
audience.
on Woolston
playground plan
• By Jess Gibson
A HISTORIC Woolston
playground is getting a refresh.
The city council is seeking feedback
on a proposal for the Radley
Park playground until November
6. It was built at the park on
Woolston Cres in the mid-1980s.
The area used to be part of
Troutdale Farm, where Andrew
Mensal Johnson bred the first
brown trout in New Zealand.
The farm was a popular picnic
area until it closed in the early
1930s and a number of the original
trees remain at the park.
There is a plaque beside the
Heathcote River commemorating
Mr Johnson. The city council is
proposing to put in new swings, a
slide, carousel, see-saw and fishrocker.
Once the consultation period
has closed, the project team will
analyse the feedback and prepare
a report and recommendation for
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board.
A decision from the board is
expected in April and, if the plan
is approved, construction is likely
to start in May or June.
Cancer scare got Lorelei painting
• By Claire Booker
WHEN LORELEI Burdett
was waiting for the results
of a biopsy after a routine
mammogram, the possibility
of having breast cancer sent her
into emotional turmoil.
So she channelled her feelings
into creating art for a calendar
to raise money for the Breast
Cancer Foundation NZ.
“When I was waiting for my
results, I thought I can’t be sick,
I’m about to have a grandchild,”
Ms Burdett said. “So I decided I
would just paint and help people
get to know how I was feeling.”
The results came back clear,
much to Ms Burdett’s relief,
but she continued painting
and compiling artwork for the
calendar.
She developed a passion for art
when she was at high school in
Whakatane, and says painting
is not hard for her – she just
lets her feelings flow onto the
canvas.
Ms Burdett’s feature piece for
the calendar La Femme portrays
femininity and hope.
“It had to be beautiful and
feminine,” she said.
Family is an important part
of Ms Burdett’s life and the
inspiration behind her art,
which is mostly done using oil
paint.
“Every painting has a story,
people may not get it, but
they just have to use their
imagination,” she said.
Each painting generally takes
Ms Burdett about two days to
complete, depending on how
“hyped-up” she is about it.
Many of the pieces in the
calendar are colourful and
dedicated to members of her
family, including her late
husband Peter, who died in 2009
from pancreatic cancer.
‘This is not perfect, I’m
not perfect, but this is
through my eyes’
After Peter died, she dedicated
a calendar to him and painted
Historic homestead gets award
THE RESTORATION of
Risingholme Homestead in
Opawa and the new Woolston
Community Library have been
recognised at the Christchurch
Civic Trust awards.
Two other major city council
projects – Tūranga the and the
Nurses’ Memorial Chapel have
also been recognised.
Along with praising the work
on Risingholme, the trust has
acknowledged the quality of the
chapel repairs and the design
and reinstatement of the community
library.
City council capital delivery
community manager Darren
Moses said the public recognition
of several of the city’s
rebuild and restoration projects
reinforces their importance to
Christchurch.
“These awards further recognise
the council’s commitment
to a city that weaves the old with
the new, restoring special places
and delivering innovative new
spaces,” he said.
“The 155-year-old Risingholme
Homestead reopened in
June after suffering damage in
an arson attack in 2016, just as
the Council was preparing for
earthquake-related repairs.
“The council-led repair and
restoration project has saved
Risingholme, fully returning the
historic homestead to its former
glory and strengthening the
building.”
The Nurses’ Memorial Chapel
is the only chapel in the world
to honour nurses killed during
20th century wars reopened last
year after complex restoration
work while the 1871 library was
lost during the 2010-11 earthquakes.
The “design and functionality”
of Tūranga, along with the city
council’s role in the reinstatement
of a major facility in the
city, have been recognised, while
the “excellent restoration and
refurbishment” of a special community
house, Risingholme, has
also been praised.
City council central library
manager Chris Hay said it is an
Watch out
for burglars
at the door
– police
•From page 1
A man has been charged in
connection with the break-in and
is before the courts.
The motor scooter has been
recovered, but none of the other
stolen items have been found.
Police said south Christchurch
is an area targeted by burglars, but
there has been no recent spike in
break-ins in the Somerfield area.
Colin said the builder who
repaired his window, which was
damaged when the burglar broke
in, said there has been other burglaries
in the area.
“He’s done about three (repair
jobs) down around Cashmere Rd,
just that particular building firm.
It was the same type of break-in
and entry and everything.”
Meanwhile, police are warning
residents to be wary of people
knocking on their front door,
distracting them with a reason
to leave their homes and then
entering the house to steal items.
The warning comes after two
incidents in Opawa and St Martins.
When the residents returned
they found items stolen and the
offender gone. Police said it is too
early to say if the incidents are
connected.
says it is rare
to have two of the highly sought
after scholarships awarded to
students from the same school.
“In 2018, PwC gave out
sixteen full scholarships around
the country, so Rangi is well
represented this year,” she said.
The scholarship supports
university study and includes
financial aid, a paid summer
internship, a graduate job
opportunity and a mentor.
Tulsi, who lives in Cashmere,
has also been awarded a
Canterbury University business
and law enterprise scholarship
for next year.
She is currently considering
studying a Bachelor of
Commerce and double majoring
in economics and finance.
“I am incredibly excited to
Ruby was thrilled to receive
the scholarship, which she sees
as an opportunity to achieve her
career goals.
“I want to transform the
way New Zealand businesses
compete in the global business
environment,” she said.
“I have been lucky enough to
have been working for Bolstur,
this has given me a leg up into
the business world and helped
me discover my passion for
Two years since Clare’s last Little River gallery show,
and much has changed in her life; she has moved south
to Blueskin Bay and fashioned a new existence after the
death of her life partner and fellow artist, Max Podstolski.
Last September Clare travelled to Spain to walk part of
the Camino, raising money for Leukaemia and Blood
Cancer New Zealand, as a way of giving something to
help others coping with a terminally ill loved one and a
way of self-healing.
It was an Main outward Rd, and Little inward River journey | 03 325 for Clare. 1944This time
could find a sense of joy again in her work and her life,
and she was able to choose to keep on painting. The
resilience of the human spirit to endure parting and grief,
for Clare, came from the power and beauty of the natural
The cycle of returning to old places, empty now without you,
gives me a knowing that each movement forward,
when facing the storm of solitude,
is a healing.
The call of the light reveals an illuminating path.
Where have all the cats gone
• By Matt Slaughter
CAT-LOVING Somerfield
residents are concerned about
the number of furry friends
going missing.
Cat owner Philip Sheehan said
several of his neighbours posted
on the Somerfield Residents
Association Facebook page to
say their cats had gone missing
recently.
He says he
has seen about
20 missing cat
reports on the
page over the
last six months.
Mr Sheehan
said one resident
Philip
Sheehan
had found some
cats in a bag on
the banks of the
Heathcote River,
and luckily they were still alive.
Said Mr Sheehan: “A story like
that worries people with cats
and animals as well.”
Mr Sheehan admits it is
normal for cats to go missing,
but the number in Somerfield
recently has some wondering if
it is more than a coincidence.
“Cats go missing, but when
there seems to be three or four
in a two-week period, and
people say now my cat’s missing
and now my cat’s gone, it’s a
bit odd and it seems to come
in waves of maybe every six
months or something.”
WORRYING: Somerfield resident Philip Sheehan is concerned
with the number of cats going missing in the area and doesn’t
want his cat George to be next.
Mr Sheehan is one of the
lucky ones – his cat George (also
known as Fluffy Cat) has never
gone missing. But he is still
worried about the well-being of
cats in the neighbourhood and
the owners they leave behind.
“They’re part of the family,
aren’t they. I would hate that if I
knew my cat had died in pain or
was scared, that would make me
incredibly angry.”
Said SPCA communications
manager Jessie Gilchrist: “SPCA
doesn’t keep a national register
of all lost animals as such.
However, we work closely with
www.lostpet.co.nz, which is run
by the New Zealand Companion
Animal Council.”
Webley eyes Rams,
college scholarship
• By Jacob Page
CASHMERE HIGH School
basketballer Tom Webley is
eager to push his claims at the
Canterbury Rams while looking
for college scholarship offers for
next year.
The 18-year-old will look at life
after secondary secondary school
and that will include being a
wider squad member with the
Canterbury NBL franchise while
also taking his time looking for
opportunities in America.
He was a major contributor to
Cashmere earning fourth at the
event at Palmerston North - their
best ever finish, a fortnight ago as
he ended his four-year stint with
the school’s senior team.
The centre averaged more
than 30 points a game and was a
major force in the paint.
He also scored 51 points in the
quarter-final against Tauranga
Boys’ College where he added 17
rebounds and seven assists which
helped him make the tournament
team.
Webley said he was hopeful
of training with the Rams and
pursuing an American college
scholarship for the middle of
next year.
He said it was satisfying to end
his high school playing days on
a high.
“We all knew what we wanted
to achieve and for me especially, I
really wanted to prove that there
is talent here in the South Island.
“Things went really well for me
and the guys kept getting me the
ball and I got in there and was
happy to show my physicality.
“Once we stopped having more
turnovers, we clicked and I don’t
think we wanted it to end.”
Cashmere coach Paul Conner
said the team always felt they were
good enough to make the final
four at the nationals and had nothing
but praise for his big centre.
“Tom is an amazing talent,” he
said.
“He’s the kind of guy I’ve never
had to talk to to get him in the zone.
“Every game he plays, he gives
it everything he has and guys like
that are so important.
The team loses nine year 13
players this year and Conner
said while there are some very
talented players coming through
there will be a “rebuild element
to the senior team next year.
“It’s like a drug in the sense
New Zealand champion,
Hamuera Tainui.
The 14-year-old won back-toback
national titles at Hastings in
the junior under-63kg class.
“He’s a bit of a golden boy, he
fought very well and deserved it,”
Sullivan said.
“He’s still young for a junior so
it would be great to get him some
more opportunities, particularly
internationally.
“That’s what I’m doing now,
just see what opportunities may
be out there just so he gets used
to travelling and competing in a
new environment.”
Sullivan said while trips to
Australia for junior camps
were always beneficial, she said
competitions further away like
Ireland were in her sights.
“It’s important to try to keep
these guys in the sport and show
others coming through what is
possible.
Hamuera’s gold medal was a
highlight, but the Woolston team
also managed three silver medals
and a bronze.
Trevor Swainson was second in
the under-81kg elite class but received
the best runner-up award
at the tournament.
“I thought Trev fought really
well, he had three fights and
earned that silver medal,” Sullivan
said.
Byron Antal also won silver in
the junior 80kg plus category,
“I think nerves got the better of
Byron but he has the skills he just
needs more fights,” she said.
Ryley Sutherland was runnerup
in the under-50kg cadet class.
“He fought well but didn’t land
the big, flashy blows probably he
needed to win the fight,” Sullivan
said.
Tegan Burdett-Clark earned a
bronze medal in the under-57kg
elite class.
Sullivan said it was a good
return for the club at a pinnacle
event of the year, but the hard
work continues into the new year.
Tasty Bites
Moving veges to centre stage
No longer the side dishes, the back-up dancers or the understudies, vegetables
have earned their place front and centre on the plate as this pizza shows
Broccoli margherita pizzas
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 x quantity broccoli dough (see
following basic recipe)
⅔ cup (50g) finely grated
parmesan
300g cherry tomatoes, torn in
half and squeezed to remove the
seeds
¼ cup (4g) oregano leaves
Extra virgin olive oil, for
drizzling
2 x 125g fresh mozzarella balls,
torn
Basil leaves, to serve
Finely grated parmesan, plus
extra to serve (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 200 deg C.
Line 2cm x 30cm round oven
trays with non-stick baking
paper.
Divide the dough in half and
press on to each tray to make
2cm x 28cm round pizza bases.
Bake for 20min or until firm and
slightly golden.
Sprinkle the bases with
parmesan and top with the
tomatoes and oregano.
Drizzle with a little oil.
Return the pizzas to the oven
and bake for a further 20min or
until golden.
Top warm pizzas with the
mozzarella and sprinkle with
basil and extra parmesan to
serve.
Cook’s notes: You can add
your favourite toppings to this
pizza.
Just avoid anything that might
make the broccoli base turn soft
(such as tomato puree).
It’s best to stick to fresh
tomatoes with the seeds and
some of the juice squeezed out.
Try sprinkling over preroasted
pumpkin, eggplant
(aubergine) or zucchini
(courgette).
To have these pizza bases on
standby for busy days, bake
them for the first 20min, then
cool, wrap and freeze for later
use.
Broccoli dough
Ingredients
600g broccoli florets (about two
heads), roughly chopped (see
cooks notes)
¾ cup (90g) almond meal
(ground almonds)
½ cup (25g) finely grated
Parmesan
3 eggs
Sea salt and cracked black
pepper
Directions
In small batches, place
the broccoli in a food
processor and process until
finely chopped. Transfer to a
large bowl.
Add the almond meal,
parmesan, eggs, salt and pepper
to the broccoli and mix well to
combine.
Makes one quantity.
Cook’s notes: It’s best if you
don’t add too much of the
broccoli stem to this dough.
A floret with roughly 6-8cm of
stem is great.
Adding extra can make the
dough watery.
You can swap half, or all, of
the broccoli for cauliflower if
you prefer.
Again, just don’t use too much
of the stem.
One bedroom
serviced Apartment
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
SOUTHERN VIEW
Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
Daniel Jay
I’ve had all sorts of work done here from
basic servicing and warrants through to
major work like clutches, replacement
coilovers and bushings. Kevin is a very
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Lewis
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
12pm. So give Kevin a call on 982
4268, or pop in and he will be happy
to help with all your vehicle servicing
needs.
