The dam is the second of three built by BC Hydro under 

the terms of the Columbia River Treaty. At the peak of the 

project in the winter of 1966-67, over 1,600 people were 

working to build the dam. 

The dam is about 52 metres high, with a crest length of 

853.4 metres. Of this, 366 metres of the crest length is concrete 

dam and the rest is earth fill dam. The completed 

dam structure required a total of 583,000 cubic yards of 

concrete, 2.3 million bags of cement, 5,250 tons of concrete 

aggregate and 7,500 tons of structural steel.

Canada’s best rock climber Sonnie Trotter has hailed 

the annual Kootenay Climbing Festival as the “best little 

fest in the west.” Organized by The Association of West 

Kootenay Rock Climbers (TAWKROC) for the past eight 

years, the Climbing Festival takes place the third weekend 

of every September and this year saw the greatest number 

of participants ever: hundreds of children and adults 

attended the daytime and evening activities.

and beside the natural rock climbing wall behind the 

Lion’s Head Pub in Robson including a zipline for the 

kids, ropes on the 11 rock climbing routes and the always 

popular Tower of Power competition, which sees competitors 

try to stack the most milk crates while standing on 

them. This year the record was 23 stacked crates! 

Trotter and his family were in attendance and he gave 

the keynote presentation in the pub that evening. He 

talked about his humble beginnings in Ontario and how 

he came to climb with the likes of American Alex Honnold, 

who stars in the Oscar-winning documentary Free 

Solo. He also commended the grassroots nature of the festival 

and the fact TAWKROC has been saving climbing 

areas around the West Kootenay. 

In 2016 the association purchased Kinnaird Bluffs in 

Castlegar to save it from becoming a quarry and are currently 

in the process of raising funds to purchase the 10 

acre Waterline Walls lot, also in Castlegar, to save it from 

development. All proceeds from this year’s Climbing 

Festival have been put towards that effort. To learn more
