Their home is the subject of quite a few of Kolb’s paintings. The couple’s rooms, with their views of sunlit gardens, fields and hills, are depicted on canvas after canvas. In the painting “Home” (a 30-by-30-inch oil on canvas), a scene of cozy domestic life is set forth in the details: a table with a vase of flowers, a wall painting of an interior and a packed bookcase. The open door in the painting is one of Kolb’s trademarks. Her windows and doors let the light in and set the mood. In “Home,” red flowers and sunlit greens show through the open door. In other paintings, the light is more suggestive of dusk, when a touch of longing is concentrated in the window to the outside world. Kolb grew up in the countryside of Surrey County, England. When she was 10 or 11, her mother took her to a Van Gogh exhibition. “It was this exhibit,” she said, “that inspired me to become an artist.” In 1971, she moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne and the École des Beaux- Arts. In 1978, she moved to the United States, where she studied art at the University of Notre Dame, then Indiana University. She has lived in Saint Meinrad since 2006. One memory from her childhood stands out. “I had a pet sheep and took him out with me for a walk,” she said. “I can remember seeing a fern that seemed very ordinary until the sun came out.
