8 Tuesday October 29 2019 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz School buildings renovated • By Kim Thomas JUNIOR PUPILS at Oaklands School in Halswell have moved into a renovated and expanded junior block – the first completed stage of the school’s campus redevelopment. A new $180,000 junior playground funded by the board of trustees and PTA has also just been installed. The school is in the middle of a $5 million-plus redevelopment which is part of the Ministry of Education rebuild programme following the earthquakes. Oaklands School principal Margaret Trotter said she is thrilled students in their first two years of school have a lovely new area to learn in. A new extension links two existing junior blocks to create a dedicated junior school area. The extension is light and airy and has exposed timber beams in the ceiling, she said. It has window seats and looks out over a native garden under development with students input. Mrs Trotter said the block also features covered private decks for the use of junior school pupils, and a wet area for experimental learning. Work is under way to build a new office and a new flexible learning block as well as the refurbishment of an existing building to create a state-of-theart hub for year 7 and 8 pupils. This work will be finished by the end of this year, Mrs Trotter said. Next year refurbishment of the two Canterbury blocks will take place, and the development of an outside courtyard where the whole school can gather. Playground opened • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A CELEBRATION has been held to mark the opening of Wigram Primary School’s junior playground. The opening was held recently to thank businesses in the area which supported the school in its fundraising efforts to construct the playground. The $40,000 playground includes a climbing frame, monkey bars and a slide. Board of trustees member and parent volunteer Helena Dinnissen said the school saved more than $20,000 after recycling from its previous playground at the former Sockburn School site. She said this included pulling apart the old playground, transporting it and upgrading it to meet New Zealand playground standards. The opening was attended by donators including South Island Foodstuffs Trust, Wigram Skies Area Lions Club, engineering consultant Eliot Sinclair, United Fisheries and a member from the school’s PTA. However, fundraising isn’t over yet, with the school planning to construct a senior playground costing more than $110,000 targeted for year 4 to 6 pupils. The new playground will include two-level towers, a slide, spider web and 11 climbing activities. Mrs Dinnissen said depending on how fundraising goes, it is hoped construction on the playground will begin in the summer. The school had a grant of $8000 from gaming trust CERT, which has already dug out land and installed the wooden surrounds for the new playground. Mrs Dinnissen said the school is hoping to build a scooter track around the perimeter of the senior playground and an obstacle course when completed. But little did the couple, living at Russley Village, know their flair for cultivating beautiful gardens would be recognised in a city-wide gardening competition. The couple were entered without their knowledge by the retirement village in the Christchurch Beautifying Association Spring Garden Competition. They have now won two top gardening awards – the Clark Everett Cup and certificate of merit. Mrs McFarlane, 85, said while they weren’t expecting any awards it was a nice surprise to be recognised. While she relies more on Mr McFarlane, 87, to maintain their garden, Mrs McFarlane still gets out there most days. She describes her garden as a “profusion of colour” filled with polyanthus. Mrs McFarlane said many of the residents in the village have told her their garden brings cheer to their day. It is not the first time the couple has been recognised for their gardens, having won many awards since entering competitions in 1996.
