Russley Village cleans up garden awards
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
JUDITH AND Keith McFarlane
love adding a “spot of colour”
to their lives by getting out and
gardening.
But little did the couple, living
at Russley Village, know their
flair for cultivating beautiful
gardens would be recognised in
a city-wide gardening competition.
The couple were entered
without their knowledge by
the retirement village in the
Christchurch Beautifying
Association Spring Garden
Competition.
They have now won two top
gardening awards – the Clark
Everett Cup and certificate of
merit.
Mrs McFarlane, 85, said while
they weren’t expecting any
awards it was a nice surprise to
be recognised.
While she relies more on Mr
McFarlane, 87, to maintain their
garden, Mrs McFarlane still gets
out there most days.
She describes her garden as a
“profusion of colour” filled with
polyanthus.
Mrs McFarlane said many of
the residents in the village have
told her their garden brings
cheer to their day.
Mr and Mrs McFarlane, who
SPRINGTIME: Russley Village has won an accolade of
awards in the Christchurch Beautifying Association spring
garden competition.
moved to Russley Village three
years ago, have been married for
63 years.
It is not the first time the
couple has been recognised for
their gardens, having won many
awards since entering competitions
in 1996.
The couple were not the only
ones at the village to be recognised.
