20 Wednesday October 30 2019 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz McMeeken for under-16 NZ team • By Jacob Page LINCOLN HIGH School and Selwyn United defender Zoe McMeeken has been named in the 18-strong New Zealand under-16 football team for World Cup qualifiers in Tahiti in December. McMeeken is one of five current Cantabrians in the squad with Marian College defender Kate Taylor and Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Freya Lodge-Whitham also joining her as defensive options. Rangi Ruru’s Samantha Senior and Riccarton High School’s Alyssa Whinham making the cut in the midfield. The team will compete in the OFC under-16 Women’s Championship, where they will fight it out with 10 other nations for a berth at India 2020. New Zealand will initially take on the Cook Islands, Fiji and Tahiti in the group stages and coach Leon Birnie is looking forward to seeing how his side performs on the international stage in an effort to try to qualifier for the World Cup in India in 2020. Sisters make Black Ferns development squad for Lincoln University have been named in the 28-strong group. The group includes 12 capped Black Ferns from the wider training squad and includes fellow Canterbury players Amy Rule, Grace Brooker, Martha Lolohea, Mel Puckett and Olivia McGoverne. The two sisters have been knocking on the door of the national team for more than 12 months, having been part of a wider squad that trained alongside the first contracted Black Ferns group last year, ADVERTORIAL Winery Trip at the End of the “Sustainability Trail” Lincoln Envirotown are planning a trip to a sustainable winery as the last event of their “Sustainability Trail”. This “trail” will see people enjoying various outings and workshops all aimed at making us aware of our environment and lessening our impact on it. Some of the workshops are already fully booked but fortunately there is still plenty of space on our trip to a Sustainable Winery where we will learn about their practices over a light lunch and a drink. Similarly people can bring their previously loved clothes and replenish their wardrobes at the Clothes Swap in the Lincoln Event Centre on the evening of Thursday 14th November. For those who prefer to get outdoors the “Adventure at the Mahoe” Native Reserve on the afternoon of Sunday 10th November might appeal, or the Veges 101 workshop at the Lincoln Community Gardens.
