Lucia leads the way for Cashmere

CASHMERE age-group tennis
players showed they can match
it with the best at the New
Zealand Masters tournament in
Wellington last week.
The top performer was
11-year-old Lucia Gale, who
finished second in the under-12
girls category.
Lucia, who was the top-seed,
was beaten in straight sets 5-7
2-6 6-2 by Samoa’s
Mahinarangi
Warren.

in the first set, but
unforced errors
against a taller,
bigger opponent eventually took
a toll.
“This was a good opportunity
for Lucia to test herself against
(Mahinarangi) before they’re
likely to meet at the nationals in
December,” Meredith said.
“Lucia is only 11 and did her
best to handle the extra height
and the windy conditions as well
as she could.”

lost her fifth to eighth play-off
encounter against Auckland’s

retire hurt with the score at 3-6

Lily McHarg finished 12th in
the under-12 girls category after
losing 2-6 1-6 to Maia Krzanic-
Sullivan.
Liam Barrett finished fourth
in the under-14 boys draw after
the fifth seed lost his third and
fourth play-off to Carlson Lim
1-6 3-6.
Eliana Roelofs finished 15th in
the under-16 girls draw.
The 13th-seed finished her
campaign with a 6-3 6-0 victory
over Nelson’s Ashley Welsh.
Elmwood’s Abby Mason, who
Meredith coaches privately, was
also in a dominant mood and
won her age-group.
Abby lost just 11 games
and did not drop a set in four
matches on her way to winning
the under-16 girls title.
The top-seed beat second-seed
Auckland’s Lucy Xu 6-1 6-0 in
the final.
Meredith said the tournament
was a good lead-in for nationals
and allowed players to match-up
against each other prior to the
big event.

TWO HILLMORTON High School
korfball players have been named in
the New Zealand under-19 team for
a tournament in the Netherlands in
June.
Lynnette Sakaria and Kate Rich
will be part of the squad that will
compete at the International Korfball
Federation open European under-19
tournament.
The duo are considered two of the
top sport success stories at the school
and with both just being in Year 11,
they have a chance to build on the
success.
Chair of Korfball New Zealand
Rob Smith said both had a bright
future.
“They both have a good work ethic
and good basic ball skills from involvement
in other sports,” he said.
“Hillmorton High School has been
really supportive of Korfball Canterbury’s
schools and youth development
programme, which I am sure
has helped to set the two of them on
course with korfball.”
Smith admitted the team would
compete as underdogs at the event
but it was a tag they enjoyed having.
“We have sent teams to this tournament
before. It serves the purpose
of introducing our young players
to korfball at a significantly higher
level than they experience at home.”
Smith said.
“We are starting to create some
interest around international
korfball.
“We received the International
Korfball Federation’s World Korfball
Award for best elite development in
August, so there is an expectation
that we are progressing.”
He said the squad would attend
regular training camps on weekends
in the lead-up to the event with
many also taking part in weekly club
competitions.
