The event aims to promote gardening in its many forms and showcase the diverse and interesting range of garden-related businesses and speciality foods in the Selwyn and nearby areas. There will be plants galore, sculptures, garden tools, winetasting, saffron, Italian cheeses, nuts, pottery, landscapers and much more. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch a variety of demonstrations, chat with experienced stall holders, purchase treasures and foods to take home, do some Christmas shopping, listen to music and enjoy delicious food on a happy and entertaining Sunday afternoon. Keynote speaker, Lynda Hallinan, is scheduled for 3pm. A passionate gardener, author and former editor of NZ Gardener, and with broadcasting experience, Lynda is sure to provide an informative and entertaining presentation. Tickets for the expo cost $15 and must be pre-purchased by emailing selwyngardenexpo@gmail.com. This is a great opportunity to get new ideas for your garden, and see what is available locally. Competition was fierce, with many competitors showing remarkable dance and musical skills. There were plenty of laughs and ‘aww’ moments too, and the judges had a difficult job making their final decisions. The winners were: Juniors (Years 1-4) – Alex, singing, Seniors (Years 5-8) – Katie, contortionist/floor music Recently the school organised a ‘Mufti for Nora’ day. This was a Student Exec initiative to raise funds for Nora, a Clearview Primary School learner who has been fighting hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer. To get into the World Cup spirit, the day had a sporting theme, with $830 being raised for Nora. West Melton School’s top athletes recently competed in the Years 5-8 school athletics competition. The winners were: Junior Girls Athletics Cup Champ - Skye Junior Boys Athletics Cup Champ - Ollie Senior Girls Athletics Cup Champ - Nikita Senior Boys Athletics Cup Champ - Brooklyn These top four athletes also broke several school records. They joined the rest of the athletics team to compete in the Selwyn Zones at Nga Puna Wai. Athletics champs Skye, Nikita, Brooklyn and Ollie display their cups. Students create T-shirts to raise rural mental health awareness • By Devon Bolger A GROUP of Lincoln High School students have teamed up with Swanndri to raise awareness for rural male mental health. Year 13 students Danielle McKendry, Daniel Blaikie, Matthew Bowen, James Shi, and Codie Taylor started the business Convalescence as part of the young enterprise scheme. The group is selling T- shirts, designed to support and raise awareness about mental health in the rural sector. Communications director Codie Taylor said the group came up with the idea while brainstorming at the start of the year. “After some time we had the idea of creating a product that can help the rural community in some way as they are such a huge part of our economy and identity as New Zealanders. “So our goals quickly shifted from making a profit for ourselves to making a profit that we can donate and use to benefit the community. The team had the idea of a T-shirt sharing a supportive message with a stylish design. “This is something we thought we could achieve on our own, but could be greatly improved and much more popular with the help of an iconic kiwi brand like Swanndri” They sent a proposal to Swanndri in March and received a response saying it was happy to help. Profits from the T-shirts will be donated to the Will to Live Foundation. Codie said the team is happy with how the T- shirts came out. “We feel as though the final product we achieved is one to be proud of. It represents and portrays such a strong and powerful meaning for the issue of male mental health, and we feel as though it gains the awareness that is needed in a fashionable and unforgettable way. •The T-shirts are available at www. swanndri.co.nz.
