Fewer dog
complaints
being made
• By Louis Day
ALMOST 9000 dog-related
complaints were made in the space
of a year by Christchurch residents.
From June 2018 to June this year,
8355 complaints were made to the
city council about dogs barking
and roaming. This was a decrease
on the 9633 complaints made between
June 2017 and June last year.
The city council also investigated
a further 575 “priority one complaints”
relating to dog attacks.
In this period, 1609 infringement
notices were also issued, ranging
from $100 to $750.
The owners of the dogs involved
in attacks can be prosecuted
and, depending on the offence,
may be fined up to $20,000 or imprisonment
for up to three months.
One dog owner was convicted
over the one-year period and
disqualified from owning dogs for
four years. Nine owners were put
on probation.
Four dogs were classified as
dangerous which brings the total
number of dogs on the dangerous
dog register to 55.
The number of registered dogs
in Christchurch has increased
from 38,500 in 2017/18 to 39,127 in
2018/19.
Eco-friendly transport use on the rise
PEOPLE ARE using their cars less
and walking, biking or scooting
more, a survey has found.
The life in Christchurch
transport survey findings show
while travel by car is still the
most popular mode of transport
in the city, there has been an
increase in the use of alternative
ways to get around.
The survey questioned about
3500 Christchurch residents
about their travel habits and the
city’s transport network.
Said city council monitoring
and research team leader Kath
Jamieson: “The proportion of
people who say they are using
their car less now compared to
12 months ago is 27 per cent –
up from 19 per cent in 2018.”
More than 40 per cent of
respondents said they cycle more
often now than they did a year
ago while 21 per cent say they
walk more often.
Ms Jamieson said the arrival
of electric scooters in Christchurch
has also impacted the way
people move around the city.
“Nineteen per cent of
survey participants reported
that they have used a rental e-
scooter more than once a month
in the past 12 months, while
two per cent of those surveyed
said they own their own e-scooter
so it has become a popular
alternative form of transport,’’
ECO-FRIENDLY: The life in Christchurch transport survey has found more people are opting to
cycle, walk and scooter around the city.
Ms Jamieson said.
The number of people using
public transport has risen from
29 per cent in 2018, to 32 per
cent this year.
Ms Jamieson said the survey
showed the condition of roads
and footpaths are continuing to
trouble people.
“Fifty-one per cent of the people
surveyed said they were dissatisfied
or very dissatisfied with
the condition of Christchurch’s
roads. Ongoing patch repairs to
road, potholes and uneven road
surfaces are the main reasons
people gave for their dissatisfaction,’’
Ms Jamieson said.
The city council recently
revealed an investment case that
PEGASUS POST
seeks $25-30 million funding to
improve the safety and condition
on more than 100 roads in
suburban areas of the city.
The areas proposed for
roading upgrades are New
Brighton, Richmond, Linwood,
Woolston, Spreydon, Somerfield,
Waltham, Beckenham and
Riccarton.
